All right. It is the Emojo in the morning show. Oh, gosh, this is interesting because now she's going to have one up on us. Do you guys want to know the states that have the best tippers? According to the platform Toast, they examined tipping nationwide of people that use their app. and they found, ready for this? Here, I'll do a drum roll on this one here when it comes to tipping. They looked at the average tips across the U.S. and they found that Cleveland topped all American cities when it came to tipping. The average tip was 20.6%. In terms of the states with the highest tipping percentage, Well, that put Ohio into the top 10 at number six as far as tipping is concerned. Well done, Ohio. Michigan is way down on this list, guys.

I was going to ask that next.

The top states are Delaware, Indiana, Wyoming, Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.

And by the way, I don't have a direct correlation to the list. you can say those states again but i've read in articles before that it's usually the states with the lowest income and the towns with the lowest income that people are the most generous with their tips and it's it's you know wild when you think about that's not the people that have all the crazy extra money to throw around and maybe it's because people are more appreciative of servers and of wait staff because maybe they had that job themselves one time yeah i think that

that might be the case yeah the states again um delaware indiana wyoming kentucky this makes sense west virginia ohio new hampshire south carolina wisconsin pennsylvania yeah that's

interesting you don't see uh new york and california and connecticut and very expensive

yeah um okay so uh so you guys are are are tipping you guys just give the tip and that's it Lydia had an incident happen to her. Lydia is one of our producers here, and she screens your calls. Yeah, so I guess automatic tipping is a thing. This past weekend, I went out with some of my girlfriends to get some lunch. And the line for it, you have to go in the line first. You have to order, and then you pay, and you step back. and they come and they bring it to your table as you see it yourself well as i was getting up to leave i had already left a tip and one of my friends said well why are you leaving a tip and i was like well because you know like they waited on us they at least brought us waters and it was just like you know i was a server once before i think it's a nice thing to do and she's like no this place automatically puts a tip on your tab when you're ordering at the kiosk And I was like, no way.

Wait a second. So when you order up at the counter?

they put a tip on the tab yeah automatically wait but yet are does everybody tip when they're going and ordering at a counter and then picking it and going i'm assuming that's why they do it because

people don't maybe people weren't yeah i don't think people were tipping enough right or weren't tipping at all so they just assume they didn't have to what kind of place is this that you went to um can i say the name of it i mean yeah yeah commonwealth commonwealth in birmingham wait so

Oh, like a coffee and breakfast place?

Yeah, it's like a brunch spot.

So is that a place that they don't come and serve you at your table?

Yeah, they serve you. They just bring the water. They bring the water over and they bring the food over. And your food. And they bring the utensils and stuff.

And they're really nice. So it's kind of like a Panera?

Yeah, something like that.

Or it's a nice Panera, probably.

Because they charge 15%. They bring your stuff to the table, but it's not like they're taking your order at the table. You do that at the front.

Okay. Do you know what I mean? So you give them your order and then they bring it all to you and they charge 15%. I hate when they do that stuff. Like I, I always hate when they, they have to put the, and I guess they do it for a purpose because they're probably not getting tips. So one of the things that drives me absolutely crazy is when they don't make it enough known. Cause here's the thing. I may, they, they're charging you 15%. I may want to give them 20%. So now I got to figure out the math of five more percent.

Right. You know, right.

Which is annoying as hell doing that That's the part Trying to figure the math out Mike it does It drives me crazy I always hate it too when they give You know the waiter Or waitress will tip you If you have a party over a certain amount of people And won't say to you as they're giving you the bill Hey by the way we also just throw the tip right on there I don't mind if they throw the tip right on there But tell me that you threw the tip right on there Because in some places you get duped by that Right

Because I'll always add extra because i i like to be pretty generous with tips but the problem and i understand why they do it because sometimes big parties really screw the servers and they don't tip well but it's got to be printed on that check where you can see it so you know whether or not it's on there yeah and a lot of the restaurants are like going to get in tax trouble if they don't realize these automatic gratuities the irs considers them service charges they don't say they're tips so a lot of really yeah so the restaurant is supposed to just count that almost like uh service charger or wages that it that it's taken out of you know that they they're taxed differently than and because you know restaurants get specific breaks and different how they categorize how they pay server staff because they expect tips to be taken care of on the server's end not on their weight on this on the restaurant's end but if the restaurant's collecting those tips then it's not really handled the same way as yeah i did not know that that's interesting what's going on laura

Yeah, I ordered takeout this weekend from one of my favorite morning restaurants, and for the first time, they asked if I'd like to add a tip to my bill, and I was like, a tip? For what? I'm coming to pick it up. Well, we're bringing it out to your car. Well, if I'm coming to pick it up, I might as well walk in and get it. I mean, what am I paying for a tip for?

Well, Laura, a lot of times the person that's preparing those, that's handling all the takeout and carrying it out, they still have to put your whole order together from the kitchen, bag it up, staple it, put it together, run your charge and all that stuff. So then they're still doing that and they're still only getting paid a server's wage, but they're not on the floor of being able to get tips from customers in the restaurant.

I think a lot of people probably feel like the restaurant should pay them that. They have marijuana dispensaries. They have a tip.

Oh, I know.

I mean, we have gone tip crazy. And the fact of the matter is these businesses should be taking care of.

Now, do you guys, when you're tipping? When you guys tip on a carryout order, do you tip 20%? Or do you tip a little bit less because it's a carryout, like a pickup order?

hi my name is alex i'm a manager at a mcdonald's in sterling heights michigan and i just i had a call in because uh you know that one lady that uh called in and she mentioned how you know what's the reason for me tipping if i'm gonna come pick it up yeah there's people inside still working still getting your food together that don't get regular tips we're still service people we're still restaurant workers you know i'm i'm in a mcdonald's drive-thru but when people see me stressed out they they hand me five bucks i biggest tip i've got is 20 but like that's cool

this whole thing i like talking about uh the carry out i always will give a tip on the carry out if they ask me because i feel like if i do that they'll put a little loving into my food which is what like if i order like pizza or whatever at a pizza place and they'll say would you like to add a tip there i always end up throwing yeah 20 here you go but haven't they already made your food but make it with a kiss no no no when i order it so i always because because they know that it's not a cheapskate that's doing that well how about this yeah when

i worked at a restaurant the servers had to take to goes and they had to tip out the buser and the bar and uh everybody based on their total sales so if you're not tipping on to go your server is still paying for that money at the end of the night wow i never thought about that i've had

Oh, 100%. So that's why the turnover rate at the time was so low because you would make so much money in a week that you could never get that money anywhere else. But it's really just because we got paid a lower wage but made so much in tips. Interesting.
