We're launching Podlandia AO Rewatch, our brand new podcast where we revisit every episode of Portlandia together, breaking down sketches, going deep on our iconic characters, and pulling back the curtain on how it all got made.

00:01:00 - 00:01:05 | Speaker 3:

Kyle is going for it here. You fully improvised, not just words, but a song.

00:01:05 - 00:01:06 | Speaker 5:

Well, I thought you were all going to write a song.

00:01:06 - 00:01:15 | Speaker 3:

I remember you thinking that. Listen to Podlandia, AAO Rewatch on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

00:01:18 - 00:01:51 | Speaker 4:

I'm Mange Shachikular, and I'm back with a new season of my podcast, Skyline Drive. This time I talk to scientists, biopunks, curmudgeons, blues owners, super seniors, and Goa's top cryotherapy lab to try to understand this obsession with living forever and what it means for all of us. And I get into a bit of trouble along the way.

00:02:12 - 00:02:17 | Speaker 10:

I'd say probably start bone smashing. That doesn't work. Make it look more defined. They say it works. I don't know.

00:02:17 - 00:02:23 | Speaker 8:

Listen to Skyline Drive, How to Live Forever on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

00:02:24 - 00:02:37 | Speaker 9:

It's always funny, Spike, isn't it? when you talk to people that are dating and you find out some stories from them of either the craziest first dates or some of the craziest things that people will bring up on their first

00:02:37 - 00:02:54 | Speaker 7:

dates? Well, and this just triggered a memory for me as we were just talking to Lydia about her bar experience and the guy sitting next to her and breaking that personal space barrier. It's one of my favorite things to do. Meg and I all go sit at a bar and we'll just talk to strangers and we'll just chill. She'll read a book.

00:02:54 - 00:02:55 | Speaker 9:

Meg, your girlfriend?

00:02:55 - 00:03:25 | Speaker 7:

Yeah. Not this Meg that's sitting right here. And so Friday night, our bartender told us that she matched with a guy on one of the apps who asked her on a date. And as they started chatting, he said, I want to take you on a date because I have a Cheesecake Factory gift card to use. Now, that should have been her first red flag. But it gets way worse. She was down. She was like, you know, she thought he was cute. She's like, I'm going to meet him. Well, on the first date, He talked about his job as a male stripper.

00:03:26 - 00:03:26 | Speaker 1:

Hell yeah.

00:03:26 - 00:03:33 | Speaker 7:

And told her the story about a girl who bit his wiener while he was on stage. So...

00:03:33 - 00:03:39 | Speaker 1:

I mean, didn't she do damage? Because that's important information to know before you get intimate with somebody.

00:03:39 - 00:03:54 | Speaker 7:

I don't think she even wanted to get that detailed on the first date. I just think that's a weird story to share on a first date. You look for interesting life stories to talk about, and maybe you talk about work more than often, But I think there's just certain stories you don't save for the first date.

00:03:54 - 00:04:02 | Speaker 9:

Maybe that's a way that they say, you know, like, hey, show me your scar type thing. He just wanted to get a scar looked at.

00:04:02 - 00:04:17 | Speaker 7:

Well, I said, you know, was that a deal breaker for you? And she said the whole occupation's a deal breaker. She wished she was mad he didn't put male stripper in his profile so she wouldn't have wasted her time because she does not want to date somebody who does that. And she's like that, you know.

00:04:17 - 00:04:19 | Speaker 9:

I wonder if that ever happens to other male strippers.

00:04:20 - 00:04:22 | Speaker 7:

I don't think that's common.

00:04:22 - 00:04:27 | Speaker 9:

Actually, this is what a guy with a small has, and then this is the bigger one.

00:04:29 - 00:04:35 | Speaker 7:

So I thought I'd bring up the story of what is the craziest story he told you on the first date that he really shouldn't have shared?

00:04:36 - 00:04:40 | Speaker 9:

Wait, do you say it's only guys, though, that will tell us super stuff?

00:04:40 - 00:04:52 | Speaker 7:

No, it could be women, too, but I just feel like guys are more prone to have word vomit because they just are nervous, and they start talking too much, and they don't understand the barriers of what makes a good conversation and what's inappropriate for a first date.

00:04:52 - 00:04:55 | Speaker 9:

Things not to bring up, probably things better left unsaid.

00:04:55 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 7:

Yeah, that's a story to tell on the fourth or fifth date. I mean, she was just finding out.

00:05:00 - 00:05:03 | Speaker 1:

that he was in the entertainment business, quote-unquote.

00:05:03 - 00:05:28 | Speaker 2:

844-MOJO-LIVE, 844-665-6548. I don't know why it is, though, that to me, Cheesecake Factory would be like, I would be fine with that. Like, I guess as a guy you'd want to impress, but I would sit there and look at him saying, I've got a Cheesecake Factory gift card as, oh, he's at least being honest with me that he's not going to pull that gift card out and use it.

00:05:28 - 00:05:33 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, some people might think that's cheap or too cheap for a date. I think it's fine.

00:05:33 - 00:05:39 | Speaker 2:

Is it bad to use a gift card if you're going out on a first date? Does that make you look cheap?

00:05:39 - 00:05:39 | Speaker 9:

No.

00:05:40 - 00:05:40 | Speaker 2:

If you do it?

00:05:41 - 00:05:55 | Speaker 9:

I think especially this time of year, I assume that you just got it for the holidays from your company. I don't think it makes you look cheap. I think if you pulled it out ahead of time and said, we have $50 stick to the budget, that makes you look cheap. If I can still order a dessert, I'm good.

00:05:56 - 00:05:59 | Speaker 2:

Megan, what's happening? A lot of Megans here. What's going on?

00:06:01 - 00:06:02 | Speaker 5:

Hey, Mojo.

00:06:02 - 00:06:03 | Speaker 2:

Hi. Good morning.

00:06:04 - 00:06:24 | Speaker 5:

Hey, I just wanted to tell you, when I was younger, I got in a car with a guy. I let him pick me up for a date, which this was the last time I ever did that. And as we're driving to where we're going, he says, oh, if you look me up or anything, I was charged with something really bad. But don't worry. I never did that to that girl.

00:06:25 - 00:06:26 | Speaker 3:

Oh, my God.

00:06:26 - 00:06:39 | Speaker 5:

And I was like, oh, my God. And I was like, how do I get out of this car? I don't have my own car. That was the very last time. I always met at dates from there on out. And I was like, I did make it home okay, thank the Lord.

00:06:39 - 00:06:42 | Speaker 2:

What did you find out? What was it about him, though, that he was charged with?

00:06:43 - 00:06:53 | Speaker 5:

Well, he had, I don't want to say the word, but he had done something to a girl that was very heinous. And spent some jail time and everything. He was actually convicted in the whole nine.

00:06:53 - 00:06:57 | Speaker 2:

But did he have to serve a lot of time, or did he get let out because they found out that it wasn't true?

00:06:58 - 00:06:59 | Speaker 8:

No, no.

00:06:59 - 00:07:00 | Speaker 2:

It was true.

00:07:00 - 00:07:01 | Speaker 8:

It was yours.

00:07:02 - 00:07:14 | Speaker 1:

Wow. I mean, you want to know that, but it's almost like I wish you would have just cut. And he probably is thinking, I'm going to cut to the chase on the first date so I'm not wasting too much time, but maybe just say it in the app.

00:07:14 - 00:07:19 | Speaker 2:

Or thinking that she already brought it up, although if she looked it up, she wouldn't be on the date with him probably. Bath?

00:07:21 - 00:07:21 | Speaker 7:

Yes.

00:07:21 - 00:07:24 | Speaker 2:

Good morning. Good morning. What did he bring up on the first date?

00:07:25 - 00:07:31 | Speaker 7:

He told me that he had an STD, but that there was medication I could take that would clear it up pretty quickly.

00:07:31 - 00:07:33 | Speaker 1:

Oh, my gosh.

00:07:33 - 00:07:35 | Speaker 7:

That was going to happen on the first date.

00:07:35 - 00:07:41 | Speaker 1:

I give him respects, though. No, no, no. You can't just make that statement is an assumption that I'm going to get some tonight.

00:07:41 - 00:07:43 | Speaker 2:

Really, though? Exactly.

00:07:44 - 00:07:51 | Speaker 9:

Clear boundaries. Maybe he saw it as a way of saying, I'm not sneaking this up on you in the heat of the moment. I'm giving you time to think about it.

00:07:52 - 00:07:52 | Speaker 3:

Yeah.

00:07:52 - 00:07:54 | Speaker 9:

I think you could have just left it at that

00:07:54 - 00:07:58 | Speaker 7:

But not told me I could take a medication Fair, you know what girl, fair

00:07:58 - 00:08:04 | Speaker 1:

I think in general, you just don't bring it up Until you're at that moment Because you shouldn't imply this date's going to end with some sex

00:08:04 - 00:08:07 | Speaker 7:

I mean, we haven't even gotten our salads yet

00:08:07 - 00:08:12 | Speaker 1:

Yes, I think STDs are a post-salad conversation

00:08:12 - 00:08:13 | Speaker 9:

A true appetizer

00:08:13 - 00:08:23 | Speaker 2:

Jordan? Yeah, how's it going? Hey, we're talking about the thing That you should not bring up on the first date But what was yours?

00:08:24 - 00:08:31 | Speaker 4:

Oh, yeah. I had a girl, this was about a month and a half ago, told me she studied witchcraft.

00:08:33 - 00:08:34 | Speaker 2:

And was her name Megan?

00:08:35 - 00:08:48 | Speaker 4:

No, her name was Robin, actually, yeah. Kind of threw me off guard on that one. Okay, but what's wrong with that? She had the tools. Well, she had the tools? Oh, yeah. She had witchcraft tools and everything.

00:08:49 - 00:08:52 | Speaker 2:

Were you intrigued and say, you know, cast a spell on me or something?

00:08:52 - 00:09:02 | Speaker 4:

Oh, no, it kind of scared me a little bit. She told me, yeah, you don't got to worry about me putting a curse on you or anything because it's bad karma.

00:09:04 - 00:09:12 | Speaker 1:

Wow. She was trying to explain to you modern witchcraft. It's not, you know, the ancient Greek mythology and movies that you might have thought about.

00:09:12 - 00:09:13 | Speaker 2:

Jennifer, hi.

00:09:14 - 00:09:15 | Speaker 6:

Hi, good morning, Mojo.

00:09:16 - 00:09:18 | Speaker 2:

Good morning. What did he bring up on the first date?

00:09:18 - 00:09:34 | Speaker 6:

Well, he said out of nowhere that he liked the way pregnant women looked, and he would love to get me pregnant. Oh, my God. Yeah. I literally just met him. That was scary. And I was young, so I just ghosted him after that.

00:09:34 - 00:09:34 | Speaker 2:

Yeah.

00:09:34 - 00:09:35 | Speaker 6:

Good for you.

00:09:35 - 00:09:40 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. What would you rather have, that one or Bree? What did you find out on the first date?

00:09:42 - 00:09:46 | Speaker 8:

That he had 10 felonies, and he was kind of proud of it, too.

00:09:46 - 00:09:48 | Speaker 9:

Okay, but, like, what kind of felony?

00:09:52 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 8:

That didn't matter, but they were drug felonies because he was selling all sorts of drugs.

00:10:00 - 00:10:03 | Speaker 6:

wasn't over that life if he was proud of it then you probably figure you're going to get wrapped up

00:10:03 - 00:10:09 | Speaker 5:

in that well some people would say he's an entrepreneur and a businessman he thought he was

00:10:09 - 00:10:17 | Speaker 7:

uh what's up august what's up how are you guys doing today good man we're talking about the

00:10:17 - 00:10:54 | Speaker 4:

things that you probably shouldn't bring up on the first date okay so basically what i was just telling her was i went on this date a few months back and i met up with this guy and he wanted me to drive my car so we're driving we go over to target for some reason and he's like out of nowhere he just brings up vr if you know what that is virtual reality yeah yeah and he's like i play vr and all this stuff like oh cool you know i played that a few times he was like he's like yeah i used to um get into vr chat i'm like oh okay he's like yeah but i did some stuff on there i'm like okay what kind of stuff did you do on there and basically he told me he was a male stripper on there and he was making money and making uh male content they have males they have

00:10:54 - 00:11:03 | Speaker 7:

Like, well, strippers in general on VR? Virtual reality stripping? Yeah. I wonder how popular that is. Well, somebody told me once.

00:11:03 - 00:11:12 | Speaker 6:

It's popular. They told me you can go to a VR strip club and you can get a VR lap dance. I just assumed it was like a computer. I didn't realize there's someone on the other end performing.

00:11:12 - 00:11:17 | Speaker 4:

No, it is. You get like a full body tracking on yourself, and you can go in there and you can dance.

00:11:18 - 00:11:20 | Speaker 7:

Oh, my God. I found out what I want for my birthday.

00:11:21 - 00:11:24 | Speaker 6:

Doesn't that just seem so unsatisfying? I don't know.

00:11:24 - 00:11:29 | Speaker 7:

We watch porn You're living in it

00:11:29 - 00:11:35 | Speaker 4:

They call it phantom sense So like when you're in there It feels like it's actually happening

00:11:35 - 00:11:40 | Speaker 7:

And honestly people do only fans And just send pictures and stuff This one's a little bit more

00:11:40 - 00:11:46 | Speaker 6:

You can see porn for free This is someone paying to have someone else Stick a bunch of little sensors all over the body

00:11:46 - 00:12:13 | Speaker 7:

Are you videotaping right now? Have you ever watched somebody that's doing VR? Okay So people that do VR With the goggles on. They're playing their car games and they're doing this thing and they're like, they look groovy. This is me doing VR stripper stuff. I know it's not audible. It's going to say it's in the video. Now pretend the stripper bit you.

00:12:14 - 00:12:23 | Speaker 5:

Okay, but you guys need to watch a show on Amazon Prime called Upload because they have these VR suits that they do this in. And it's very popular.

00:12:23 - 00:12:25 | Speaker 7:

And does the suit move, like, two motions?

00:12:26 - 00:12:26 | Speaker 5:

Yes.

00:12:26 - 00:12:28 | Speaker 7:

Megan, please.

00:12:28 - 00:12:28 | Speaker 5:

I know.

00:12:28 - 00:12:30 | Speaker 7:

Tell me that it's not, like, way too expensive.

00:12:30 - 00:12:33 | Speaker 5:

I think that Jeff Bezos is probably working on it.

00:12:34 - 00:12:38 | Speaker 7:

Somebody please tell me where I can get one. Do they have it at Best Buy?

00:12:38 - 00:12:42 | Speaker 5:

Are you telling me you truly wouldn't try it? Because I would try it. I would try it in a second.

00:12:42 - 00:12:46 | Speaker 6:

No, because I've got to pay that guy on the other side to have the suit on doing the dancing.

00:12:47 - 00:12:49 | Speaker 5:

Well, work is work. You've got to pay for labor.

00:12:49 - 00:12:58 | Speaker 6:

That guy, you're paying that guy? Well, I'm saying in this situation, I want to die. Well, the guy on the phone was experienced. I want to see what that guy can do.

00:13:01 - 00:13:09 | Speaker 7:

I've done VR golf before, and let me just say this to you. I'm a much better VR golfer than on a real course. I wonder if I'm better with that.

00:13:09 - 00:13:11 | Speaker 6:

You don't have to pay to go on the VR golf course, right?

00:13:12 - 00:13:15 | Speaker 7:

You pay for the machine? You just buy the goggles in the game.

00:13:15 - 00:13:26 | Speaker 6:

This is like you've got to pay extra for that stripper dude on the other side, and I'm like, I'm sorry. If you've got to pay, I'm going to feel dumb afterwards. I didn't even get to see a real human and I lost money.

00:13:26 - 00:13:28 | Speaker 5:

What are you really paying for? Company.

00:13:28 - 00:13:35 | Speaker 7:

Yeah. Actually, no, you know what you're paying for? You're paying for nobody else to watch you doing it. That's what you're paying for right there.

00:13:36 - 00:14:05 | Speaker 1:
