all right it's mojo in the morning show uh shannon's getting called out for what she calls her kids and uh this is interesting that i always say it ain't nobody's business but that's kind of

00:02:12 - 00:03:44 | Speaker 4:

what i say too and i i don't know why this is bothering me as much as it is and i think it's because people are i feel like it's a knock on me and i think that's where it's it's like really just like digging at me. So I posted whenever I post on social media about my stepkids, Sam and Kieran, who are in high school. And it was Kieran's birthday last week. And so I did like a big birthday post for him. And any time I post and refer to them as my stepkids, every single time people will comment bonus kids, bonus kids, bonus kids. Don't call them your stepkids. It's so rude. And I'm like, we hate the phrase bonus kids. Like, we just don't use it. We don't care for it. And I for a bunch of different reasons. But every time it never fails, somebody is commenting that or DMing. And to me, it's like I love them so freaking much. It's not a knock. I grew up with a stepmom and a stepdad and step siblings. And that's just what we called them. and i feel like if you shift the perspective i'm like i don't tell your kids to call you mama instead of mom or i don't call jacob joey and i i don't tell them to call you pops instead of dad a-hole so why is it that people feel the need to be like

00:03:44 - 00:04:06 | Speaker 8:

it should be bonus kids i'm like we don't like that why because this world is full of a bunch of people who are angry at life and they just that everybody's got like to have to have a say you know what happened the problem was once we started putting stuff on social media everybody had their own say like back in the day you didn't have your say right you only had your say verbally

00:04:06 - 00:04:30 | Speaker 4:

and nobody would ever just run them randomly say don't call your kids special name i love them just the same even though i don't call them that it's just like i want to scream and one guy in particular laid into me every single post i finally was like be blocked and be blessed because you are driving me crazy with this i think obviously you gotta do what's best for you i think oftentimes

00:04:30 - 00:04:42 | Speaker 7:

people have their own relationship with certain words yeah and their relationship with the word step is different than your relationship is that is you know what i mean i had a really long

00:04:42 - 00:04:48 | Speaker 4:

conversation in the car about this yesterday and he said the same thing to me about that And I think that's what it is

00:04:48 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 7:

Like I've been in situations So Sherelle calls Josiah a bonus baby And I don't have an affinity either direction Like I don't care As long as the love is where it needs to be You can call him whatever you want Even a-hole like Mojo

00:05:00 - 00:05:27 | Speaker 5:

um but i was in a situation where i was very uncomfortable because not the word that was used but the way the father introduced all of his children and then he introduced all of his biological children first and then at the end he was like oh and this is my stepdaughter and the way that that happened it wasn't even the word but the energy behind it the separation is maybe what I think maybe people are

00:05:27 - 00:05:47 | Speaker 3:

feeling when they hear stuff. And if you're with me, and all of you guys have met them, like when I'm introducing them to people, I'm like, this is our senior, Kieran. This is our sophomore, Samantha. This is Lucy. She's now in fifth grade. This is our first grader. It's just, I don't know. I don't know why it has become such a thing lately.

00:05:47 - 00:06:05 | Speaker 2:

And I think people aren't realizing you're very new to blending your family, and these are older kids. Like, to call them to include them in a way that maybe makes them uncomfortable too like is so rude yeah to call them like my bonus children they're like that sounds so stupid so overbearing too which

00:06:05 - 00:06:10 | Speaker 3:

for sherelle that's like a thing with her and josiah love that i would never say oh why do you

00:06:10 - 00:06:18 | Speaker 4:

do that can i say this why not just call them your kids but i think there's a different can you just call them your kids would your kids be offended if you said these are my kids so this

00:06:18 - 00:06:48 | Speaker 3:

was part of the discussion yesterday they like i have four kids um in the post i guess i could have just written like happy birthday to my son i if i'm being super super honest and love them to pieces this is still very new to me yeah um and i'm not there yet i'm not there when people ask me how ask me how many kids i have i say i have four kids that's great um but it it is a process And this is no disrespect to them, no disrespect to Wes, but it is a process.

00:06:48 - 00:06:53 | Speaker 4:

Do you think it's also that you want to be respectful, too, of their mom so that she doesn't feel like...

00:06:53 - 00:06:53 | Speaker 3:

Yes, very much so.

00:06:53 - 00:06:55 | Speaker 4:

You guys have a great relationship, I know.

00:06:55 - 00:06:57 | Speaker 3:

Yes, I truly, truly love their mom.

00:06:58 - 00:06:59 | Speaker 4:

I do want to...

00:06:59 - 00:07:01 | Speaker 5:

Because you said that you have a stepmom.

00:07:01 - 00:07:01 | Speaker 3:

I do.

00:07:01 - 00:07:02 | Speaker 5:

Did you...

00:07:02 - 00:07:10 | Speaker 3:

I've never called her mom. What did she call you, though? And did you have a preference? That's a really interesting question. I don't know that I've ever heard her refer to me.

00:07:10 - 00:07:12 | Speaker 2:

I mean, how old were you when they got together?

00:07:12 - 00:07:13 | Speaker 3:

Elementary school.

00:07:13 - 00:07:14 | Speaker 2:

Okay.

00:07:14 - 00:07:21 | Speaker 3:

Yeah. But I've never referred to her as mom and I love her so damn much, but I like, I have a mom.

00:07:21 - 00:07:40 | Speaker 4:

Yeah. You know, that's how I was with my dad's wife. I always called her my, this is my dad's wife. And she actually said to me initially, she goes, I'm never going to be your mom. Cause you had a great mom, similar to what you say. You have, you have a mom. And so she took the reins on that. But when we had kids, she was grandma Sue. So it's funny because that's what we started to say.

00:07:40 - 00:07:48 | Speaker 3:

So all of the grandmas, like when I am referring to them and the kids are around, are Nama Joanne and Nama Chris. Like everybody's just Nama.

00:07:48 - 00:07:48 | Unknown:

Yeah.

00:07:49 - 00:07:57 | Speaker 4:

That's what we call grandma. Carlos. Shannon wants you to not call her also stepmother. That doesn't sound. Step monster, no?

00:07:57 - 00:08:01 | Speaker 3:

Yes. Well, my kids call me momster. Momster. So it would go.

00:08:01 - 00:08:02 | Speaker 4:

What's up, Carlos?

00:08:03 - 00:08:31 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, I wanted to say, you know, but Shannon, you can never please 100% of the people. a hundred percent of the time but what matters is in your household as long as you guys agree what you want that's all that matters everyone always going to have an opinion and you can't move your life based on what what the public is going to say yeah someone's always going to be unhappy someone's always going to have an opinion i bet you if she went back and looked at the

00:08:31 - 00:09:29 | Speaker 4:

person that wrote that post i would bet you a million dollars that person has also written a negative post on some other pictures and stuff because i feel i feel like the people the same people that post that are the same people that because i i can see people text me all the time here 95500 and we can see their text messages if somebody will write like a negative post on there i can click on sometimes and see what previous posts were and it's typically a string of negative stuff which honestly i i i find i find to be loved like i know you say uh be blocked and be blessed I will only block anybody from anything on social media if they are, you know, racially or anti-Semitic or, you know, anti-whatever it is. You know, if they're a hater. But if they're hating on me personally or something, I just like go, you know what? I'm giving them their joy in life because I feel like these people are just negative human beings. I feel bad for them.

00:09:30 - 00:09:45 | Speaker 3:

No, and I agree with you. And I'm trying to, you know, have that perspective, too. i think though like i said at the beginning it feels like a knock on my relationship with them or my love for them and that's where i get like super protective and i'm like but that's not it

00:09:45 - 00:10:00 | Speaker 4:

like that's you posted you posted on friday right it was friday's birthday for uh um your step your stepchild bonus baby yes not friday it was thursday no thursday and i and i saw it i thought it was so it's such

00:10:00 - 00:10:16 | Speaker 1:

a sweet post and honestly it's it's wild because i there was no social media when i was a kid and my dad got married but i i looked at it i go that would you know that would have made me feel great if if there were you know you i did get many happy birthdays from my dad's uh wife uh but uh but that

00:10:16 - 00:11:02 | Speaker 3:

would have that was such a cool thing what's up jacqueline hi good morning i i just wanted to say that I think that it's respectful for you to call her or them your stepchildren. My ex-husband just got married last year, I think, and his new wife refers to me as Jacqueline when she's talking to my daughter. She'll be like, have you talked to Jacqueline today? And I only realized that because I went through her phone, my daughter's phone, and I noticed she's calling me by my first name, and I'm like, absolutely not. Like, that's so disrespectful. But she's done like that for a little bit. Once we got married, it got a little bit. It actually got way worse. But I think that it just proves how respectful you are. And I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

00:11:02 - 00:11:05 | Speaker 1:

Thank you for the call. What's going on, Samantha?

00:11:06 - 00:11:06 | Speaker 4:

Hi.

00:11:07 - 00:11:08 | Speaker 1:

What's up?

00:11:08 - 00:11:36 | Speaker 4:

I'm a stepmom, and I was a stepchild. I had a stepmom myself. And so I don't think that Shannon's doing anything wrong. I think she's being very respectful I do understand why people Don't like that word but at the end of the day That's their own personal problem I think Shannon's being very respectful Of her stepchildren and Their biological mother And I completely respect that And I think she's doing an awesome job

00:11:36 - 00:11:39 | Speaker 1:

Very nice of you Samantha Thank you Maureen

00:11:39 - 00:11:41 | Speaker 3:

Marnie

00:11:41 - 00:11:46 | Speaker 1:

Hello Marnie Sorry about that

00:11:46 - 00:11:50 | Speaker 3:

a few good marnie he does it to everybody don't worry i do it all the marnies for some reason

00:11:50 - 00:11:54 | Speaker 1:

i look up there and it looks like it says marine i don't know i don't know why you

00:11:54 - 00:13:03 | Speaker 5:

i wouldn't say marnie but go ahead so not only am i married in an interracial but it's also an interreligious family and i have three step kids five step grandchildren and when i introduce them i introduce them all of my children and when they introduce me they do introduce me as mom and When they first started that, I really did fight against it. But my husband had to explain to me, it's out of a sign of respect. How long have you been involved with this family? We've been together 21 years. How long did it take you to get to that point? When they first started doing it, we were probably dating about a year. And I was just like, and I talked to him about, he goes, it's a sign of respect. So I had to get comfortable with that. But, you know, I can tell you, they're all beautiful. When they introduce us, they even introduced my daughter. This is my little sister. That's beautiful. So hopefully that happens to your blended family. Yeah.

00:13:03 - 00:13:26 | Speaker 1:

That's great. A lot of people see that. I know there's not one person here saying bonus or any of that stuff. They're all saying, you know what, you call them what you want to call them. Except for a couple of things, because they are, some of them are, you know, they're teenagers and teenagers. By the way, can you call your kids a-holes, but not his kids a-holes? Because do you worry that if you say, God, he's being such an a-hole, like that Wes will be.

00:13:27 - 00:13:29 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, I don't, I wouldn't say that.

00:13:29 - 00:13:33 | Speaker 1:

No, no. Warm up to it. You'll warm up to it. What's up, Greg? How you doing?

00:13:34 - 00:13:35 | Speaker 6:

Hey, Mojo. How are y'all doing this morning?

00:13:36 - 00:13:38 | Speaker 1:

We're all doing great. What's going on?

00:13:38 - 00:14:01 | Speaker 6:

Good. You know what? It doesn't matter how you work your family. you know you're always somebody's going to complain i uh i have four kids and my oldest is technically my stepdaughter and when i introduce them i just introduce them to all my kids and then when people find out the age gap and how old i am they they try to figure out why and then have to explain it's my stepdaughter and they're like well why didn't you say it's your stepdaughter it's like well you know that's not how we roll in our family isn't that funny by

00:14:01 - 00:14:10 | Speaker 1:

the way by the way that's always when the age difference is kind of wild that is that is an interesting one and then when they don't look like each other that's the other one too where

00:14:10 - 00:14:28 | Speaker 6:

people are like the hell that's the funny thing is because my my non-biological daughter is the only one that kind of looks like me yeah like when i when i say you know she's you know only 10 years younger than her 12 i'm sorry i was 16 technically when i had her if she wasn't a biological people are like well how'd that work it's like well it didn't you should come up with

00:14:28 - 00:14:38 | Speaker 1:

a great story with with her as a accompaniment on that one so i used to go to social studies class with him or something like that like when he had me as a kid see that's the wild part

00:14:38 - 00:14:40 | Speaker 6:

I can't please everybody, Shannon. I know.

00:14:41 - 00:14:50 | Speaker 2:

I know. The wild part about it is people trying to do the math in their mind and trying to figure out your life and have all of these questions based on their curiosity when it's none of your damn business in the first place.

00:14:50 - 00:14:59 | Speaker 5:

I agree, but sometimes my brain just, like, wants to do the math and then I feel dumb because I can't do it quickly. And it's not judgment on you. It's judgment on how did I get to this point in life not knowing.

00:15:00 - 00:15:00 | Speaker 4:

Simple math.

00:15:02 - 00:16:02 | Speaker 3:
