I'm Mange Shachikadur and I'm back with a new season of my podcast, Skyline Drive. This time I talk to scientists, biopunks, curmudgeons, blues owners, super seniors, and Goa's top cryotherapy lab to try to understand this obsession with living forever and what it means for all of us. And I get into a bit of trouble along the way.

00:01:19 - 00:01:24 | Speaker 1:

I'd say probably start bone smashing. That doesn't work. Make it look more defined. They say it works. I don't know.

Mojo in the morning. Phone scam coming up here in just a little bit. We have War of the Roses on Thursdays. Stick around for that. Friday, throwback throwdown. So, Shannon, your dad is a little stubborn when it comes to taking care of himself.

00:02:18 - 00:02:31 | Speaker 3:

He is real stubborn. I think it's where I get my stubbornness from. But my dad needs a knee replacement. Actually, he needs a knee replacement in both of his knees really, really badly. And you know this because you had a knee replacement, Mojo.

00:02:31 - 00:02:35 | Speaker 7:

I had it like early in my life when they didn't want to do it.

00:02:35 - 00:02:36 | Speaker 3:

I did not know that. Yeah?

00:02:36 - 00:02:37 | Speaker 7:

Yeah.

00:02:37 - 00:02:42 | Speaker 3:

It totally changed. I mean, everything. It changed how you walk. You said that you-

00:02:42 - 00:02:57 | Speaker 7:

The pain was so bad. Yeah. I had so many injuries and so many knee problems and then I had flat feet and all this stuff. But it was so bad for such a long time. And it wasn't until Dr. Perry Green actually was the only doctor that said, I will do this for you because if I don't, you're not going to have ankles.

00:02:57 - 00:03:39 | Speaker 3:

Yeah. And my dad is to the point where, and I hope he doesn't mind me sharing, but his knees are real bad. Like he can barely, when he gets up like from the couch or a chair or whatever, he has to like physically move his legs to get himself to stand. And then once he's standing, I've noticed he's been shifting his weight from leg to leg because he's in so much pain. And so I'm like, enough is enough. I mean, I want him to, like, you know, be able to run around and hang out with all the grandkids and me. And selfishly, I've been dreaming about going to Vegas with him again for a long weekend. But there's no way that he can walk around Vegas right now. And I'll be damned if I'm pushing him in a wheelchair around the Vegas Strip. Or would he be caught dead with that?

00:03:39 - 00:03:42 | Speaker 7:

No, he could get one of those little rascal scooters and drive around.

00:03:42 - 00:04:43 | Speaker 3:

My dad would not do that. There's no way. But, like, I want him to feel better. And he's, I mean, he's not even 70 yet. So he's got a lot of good years left. So yesterday, Mojo, you know this. I asked you for the name of your knee doctor, Dr. Perry Green, that you had recommended. And so I sent him the recommendation and the phone number and everything. And I sent it with this text because I knew that if I just said, call this guy and make an appointment, it was not going to work. And he would not do it. I said, okay, this is Mojo's doctor. Call him so we can go to Vegas. I will go with you to the appointment. We can get drinks afterward. Yes, I am bribing you with beer. My dad loves beer, okay? His response was so great. He wrote me back and he texted, everyone has their price. You have found mine. I will go. Good. And I'm like, made me so happy, but I literally had to bribe the man with beer to go to his knee appointment.

00:04:44 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 7:

But it worked. I will tell you this, it's amazing, and I learned this after the hard thing, because of, you know, I love going to, Chelsea says I'm obsessed with doctors, and I think a lot has to do with the fact that, you know, Dr. Warner's been such a friend for such a long time, but I like.

00:05:00 - 00:05:22 | Speaker 1:

go to the doctors almost too much you know what i mean like i go as much as i possibly can to get checked out because you know having had you know stuff that it pains you and then having like both your parents pass away and die i'm like so fearful i don't want to leave my kids like that but uh it's amazing how stubborn some people are going to a doctor like why i don't you are going that's

00:05:22 - 00:05:32 | Speaker 3:

why i keep telling it you're gonna feel better you're gonna be able to like do things that you haven't been able to do for a couple of years now. Like, why would you not just go? The fact that I had to bribe my

00:05:32 - 00:05:50 | Speaker 1:

father. Can I, hold on a second. Let me reminisce a little bit here for a second. Oh, God. What are you calling me now? Let's hold on. Let's go back. Me? Do you remember the time when Shannon wasn't going to go and she wasn't going to go to the doctor to go get herself checked out, too? For what? For my mammogram? Remember? It was like, yeah. I went. I know, but you went. I went, finally.

00:05:50 - 00:05:52 | Speaker 3:

Nobody bribed me with you. No, no.

00:05:52 - 00:06:05 | Speaker 1:

But how long? You didn't go You didn't go until we had Mike on the phone, or Mike on the phone, and Mike on the air, and Mike not going on his appointment, and then all the listeners were getting on you.

00:06:05 - 00:06:06 | Speaker 3:

This is very true.

00:06:06 - 00:06:10 | Speaker 1:

The apple doesn't fall far from the frickin' Murphy tree.

00:06:10 - 00:06:16 | Speaker 3:

But, to defend Shannon, there is something about dads that just refuse to take care of themselves. Thank you, Megan. Yep.

00:06:16 - 00:06:19 | Speaker 1:

So you're staring it back to that? Girl power. Take it off.

00:06:19 - 00:06:58 | Speaker 2:

Listen, the body heals itself. I mean, you know, obviously heart and knee, there are things you need, you need to get taken care of. But Meg was nagging me last night because I've been getting dizzy spells and headaches since I hit my head last week really hard on my car. And she's like, you have a concussion. You need to go to the doctor. And I'm like, I Googled it. It'll work itself out. I read the what's what's a serious head injury and a mild head. Most of the things say for concussion, just stop physical and mental activity for a week or two. I've stopped mental activity in 1998, so I'm fine. I don't get a lot of physical activity either, so I'll be okay.

00:06:58 - 00:07:09 | Speaker 1:

That's actually a big deal because, you know, when you talked about that that day, the conversation, you know, came up later with a bunch of friends, and a friend was telling me that he had bleeding on his brain from banging his head against something.

00:07:09 - 00:07:26 | Speaker 2:

Well, I Googled that this morning in bed when I got dizzy when I went to reach for my alarm, and it said Blaine Breed, so I Googled it, and it was like, I'm not throwing up. I'm not having unconscious spells. Like it just to me, it just sounds like a mild concussion. It's just but if it continues for more than a week, then I'm going to go to the doctor and we'll see what happens.

00:07:27 - 00:07:43 | Speaker 1:

I like this. You guys call the texter about Shannon and the wedding thing. And because I feel bad, I don't want to read it unless you're calling him. But I like that person that used that say, Shannon, one of your things that you could do is tell him that he needs to fix his needs so he can walk you down an aisle for your wedding.

00:07:43 - 00:07:55 | Speaker 3:

His response to that was I already did that. what's up there's beer at the end of the mic now we're talking he would do it hey cam what's up

00:07:55 - 00:08:40 | Speaker 4:

your voice disguise cam hi what's going on hi hi so uh when it came down to we were done expanding our family me and my husband we were kind of toying with the idea of me getting my shoes tied or him getting a vasectomy and we went to my doctor and they flat out said it's easier for your husband go to the urologist and we were on our way to urologist for his like intake appointment and he was so nervous that i tried to make a joke and i said what do you think they do with it do you think they tape it to your stomach to keep it out of the way um and he about pulled over the truck and i had to bribe him with a six-pack and ice cream on the way home

00:08:40 - 00:08:49 | Speaker 2:

You thought it'd be funny to take the stress off But really it made him think too much about it

00:08:49 - 00:08:50 | Speaker 1:

What kind of ice cream?

00:08:51 - 00:08:53 | Speaker 4:

He's a Rocky Road fan

00:08:53 - 00:09:11 | Speaker 1:

Okay, alright That's funny, wow, that is wild I know a lot of women will bribe their husbands To get vasectomies when they don't want to have babies anymore By saying, we're offering up More baking cookies if you do it Never actually turns out to be the truth So guys don't fall for that Lisa, what's going on?

00:09:12 - 00:09:23 | Speaker 2:

Spike, go to the damn doctor. This is my second phone call. What are you doing? I'm working on it. If it doesn't, listen, I Googled a bunch of, I even screenshot a bunch of things.

00:09:23 - 00:09:32 | Speaker 3:

I'm like, Lisa, let me tell you something. Somebody just texted in. Spike, you just said bling, breed, and concussing. You better go get checked out right now.

00:09:33 - 00:09:47 | Speaker 2:

It says 80% of concussions resolve themselves over 7 to 14 days, an average of 10 days. So if it's – I still have these headaches in 10 days. Listen, they didn't put me back in the game. I've stopped sports until I see if it gets better.

00:09:49 - 00:09:50 | Speaker 4:

Bob Saget.

00:09:50 - 00:09:51 | Unknown:

00:09:51 - 00:09:56 | Speaker 2:

That's it. Oh, my God. I forgot about that. Oh, my God. Why would you have to say that now?

00:09:56 - 00:09:56 | Unknown:

Why would you have to say that now?

00:09:57 - 00:10:00 | Speaker 2:

Switching in her head. This is not to be messy.

00:10:00 - 00:10:06 | Speaker 5:

00:10:17 - 00:11:23 | Speaker 2:

lisa definitely think about making you're welcome guys take care of yourselves what's going on lisa what's going on carla i love you guys first off thank you so much for putting me on the air thank you so appreciate you love you too oh i got it um so i i woke up one morning with like stabbing pain i didn't know what was going on with me and uh i was texting my sister like i don't know i maybe have food poisoning i couldn't understand what happened and she's like no i think it's worse than that like you should go to the hospital i was like no no i'll just sleep it off tried to shower nothing was working for me and luckily she just called my dad and he cares more about my well-being than i do so he picked me up took me to the hospital well and behold i had appendicitis and i was about to burst oh my gosh yeah so i had to go into emergency surgery like within two hours it was awful but it was like such a tough recovery And anytime anyone has scatting pain, I'm like, you have to go to the hospital now. And don't be like me. Yeah.

00:11:23 - 00:11:33 | Speaker 5:

That is so important. Man, Scott, in your appendix burst in a situation like that, you know, I don't know how fatal it would be, but it would not be good.

00:11:33 - 00:11:43 | Speaker 2:

Right. You know, people do or can die from it if they really don't pay attention to it. The bacteria just spreads everywhere. But I was grateful that I finally went.

00:11:43 - 00:11:45 | Speaker 5:

Thank you for the call. I appreciate it.

00:11:45 - 00:11:46 | Speaker 2:

Thank you.

00:11:46 - 00:11:49 | Speaker 5:

Andrea is a nurse. What did you want to say, Andrea?

00:11:50 - 00:12:13 | Speaker 3:

So I'm a nurse, and I've been one for 15 years. I just wanted to say Dr. Google is not your friend. I know, I know. It's basic symptoms, and not everyone has the same one. So you have children at home. You have wife, girlfriend at home. Go get checked out. It'll take you a half an hour out of your life, and don't trust Dr. Google.

00:12:13 - 00:12:16 | Speaker 6:

Andrea, I'm holding out. Nobody's offered me beer yet.

00:12:18 - 00:13:57 | Speaker 5:

I got to tell you that a friend of mine was telling me a story about how their dad had a work appointment. And the appointment got canceled last minute. And he was really upset. And he wasn't feeling good that day. And his appointment was in Ann Arbor, which he had a long drive to go there. And it got canceled. So he's like, screw this. And then he thought to himself, well, since I'm out here, I'll go and I'll get, you know, some, uh, what's the deli out there that everybody, so he was on his way to go into Zingerman's and he still wasn't feeling good. And he was like, you know what? I'm not going to do Zingerman's. I'm going to eat healthy. And it was crazy saying he took a wrong turn and ended up in, this is crazy. The U of M hospital emergency room line. Craziest story ever. He then starts having these sweats where he started not feeling good and panicking. he decided i'm just going to pull up and go to the emergency room they told him that he had he had a quadruple bypass they told him when when when he came out of a surgery that he had an emergency surgery he had he asked the doctor this question he said how many people after this tell you that they wish they would have gone to the doctor and he said honestly you're the only one because nobody survives like what he had nobody survived from it but it was honestly it was like the fate of, if his appointment would have happened or if he would have gone to the right way to get to Zingerman's, which is not a bad option. Dying in Zingerman's wouldn't be bad. He'd be dead. Yeah, so it's crazy. So, there you go. Go to the hospital or go to the doctor. You got Dr. Warner rules.

00:13:58 - 00:13:58 | Speaker 6:

Take Shannon's dad.

00:14:00 - 00:14:04 | Speaker 5:

Take him and then ask the doctor. Hey, while I'm here, ask the knee doctor if he can help you out.

00:14:04 - 00:14:34 | Speaker 4:
