mojo in the morning show want to take this moment before we get to the second date update coming up here in just a little bit uh to tell you that it's uh that time of year again uh we have every single year here on this radio show for 25 years always tried to recognize the great people over at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in the metro Detroit area that every single year are taking care of those in our community and making this community better through the help of Buddy's Pizza, which is the Detroit style pizza, the Capuchin Food Kitchen getting together with Buddy's where Buddy's is doing their annual Slice for Life fundraiser. Last year was huge, right?

Every year, it seems like it gets bigger and bigger. And in studio with us this morning is one of the great brothers from the Capuchin Food Kitchen, Brother Gary, who I was told by my boss, Colleen, that I could not dress up like the Pope because it would be very sacrilegious to do it. I don't know why you would think that I would even think of putting on my pope costume for this one.

Because it's right there and ready to go.

I love you so much, Colleen. Listen, our Holy Father passed, and maybe get some thoughts from you on that, the passing of Pope Francis. Sure.

I was actually just talking to Colleen. It's besides the fact that he died on Easter Monday, which is incredible. He was the pope of creation, and yesterday was Earth Day. Wow. And his given name was Jorge George, and today would be the Feast of St. George. Oh, my goodness. His feast day. And he was very strong on anti-Semitism in tomorrow's Yom Hoshua in the Jewish tradition, the Holocaust Remembrance Day. So I just think those three moments in the midst of this week of remembering Pope Francis are so appropriate.

It's amazing. I was telling these guys here growing up Catholic, I've only remembered, I think it was whoever the Pope was before John Paul. And then I remember when John Paul got, that was the first one I remember that, you know, became the Pope. And then after Pope John Paul II died, then it was Benedict and then Benedict quit. But there is something to the, I don't want to call it pomp and circumstances, but there's something to this tradition of how they choose the next pope. Like I saw all the cardinals today in Rome for a prayer service this morning, early at like four o'clock in the morning when I was getting ready to come into the studios. And it caught me a little bit because everybody's dressed in their cardinal outfits and they're all there praying. and I know these next few days are going to be very interesting and they lay him to rest on Saturday and then they start the let's figure out who's going to be in the next vote.

Does a conclave start right away? Like right after?

A bunch of things. About 15 days or so after the funeral. Okay. Wow. Logistics, getting things ready. Getting everybody there. Getting everybody there.

Do you have a gut on who is, like a pick on who you think is going to be the next pope? Or do you have any idea of any of these people?

Well, you know, the Italians have an old saying, he who goes into a conclave, pope comes out a cardinal. So the Holy Spirit can surprise us. Yeah. I think it was a bit of a surprise with Pope Francis. Certainly when John Paul was elected, nobody was expecting a Polish pope. So who knows? Everybody maybe who cares about these things has a couple of cardinals that they like. There's a Capuchin, Cardinal Obango of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who has really done an amazing job in the midst of a very difficult situation. I think he's a possibility.

Has there ever been a Capuchin pope before? Because I know that Francis was the first Dominican pope.

First Jesuit.

Or Jesuit pope, I'm sorry.

No, he was, I always like to say, you know, Francis was the first Jesuit pope who took a name of a Franciscan, Francis, who wore the white robes, which was started by the first Dominican pope, and his motto was Benedictine. So he was very all religious within the Catholic Church. um but um yeah it's uh it's so hard to say the guy from the congo you just mentioned is he black he is has there ever been a black pope um there have been african popes but they were probably more berbers from north africa he would probably be he would be the first sub-saharan okay african would that be unbelievable that would be and he would be the first capuchin pope if he was uh elected. Wow. Well, I got

to tell you, this is interesting times, but there's also great things that are going on right here in Detroit. Buddy's Pizza, they've always been good to you guys, and how much money has been raised over the years through the sales of Buddy's Pizza? About

400, oh, about a million, I think we're, is it? Four million? Four million. Four million. Oh my gosh. So they're holding

up fingers and stuff in the background there, and you're like, $40. $40. We should have Brother Chin, the assistant director.

By the way, thank God you're doing the accounting here, because I'd screw that thing up, too. He's taxing, you've got to get right. Four million, that's amazing.

I want to mention this, too, because a lot of people are going, I've never even heard of Capuchin Soup Kitchen, which I don't know how you haven't, because I feel like, I mean...

Detroit, everybody knows.

Yeah, but it's more, you guys do more than just feed those who are experiencing some challenges, homelessness being a big one there there's so much more to what you're programming than that

there is we have well we have our rosa parks children and youth program uh our jefferson house for indigent men it's a nine-month residential program uh for those trying to battle and move away from narcotic or alcohol addiction uh and of course we pay for it so they don't pay anything because by definition if you're indigent you don't have much Our rope program that gives men training who have been sometimes in jail or certainly have battled addictions themselves, and now it's a job training program for a year. And they're employees of the soup kitchen while they are in that program. Earthworks Urban Farm, our services center that provides a choice food pantry and clothing pantry and then the two soup kitchens. Just incredible things. It's a lot. It's a lot.

And this is such an easy way for you to help that mission. And this is Monday. So next Monday, April 28th, 20% of everything that all the buddies' pizzas locations make goes to Capuchin.

But can I tell you that I went to Catholic school, and I went to a school, Marist High School, with Marist brothers. And I asked a brother one time. I got hit over the head. I said to him, I go, do you wear pants underneath that robe of yours?

because it was a hot day, and I was, like, sweating my butt off. It was a hot day. And I thought to myself, I'm like, I would never, and he hit me over the top of the head. But I just want to know, are you wearing pants? I am wearing pants. All right, Dan, I just want to know.

Don't hit me over the head for that. I am wearing pants.

Isn't it funny when you're little, though, that you think about stuff like that? I did. I used to always think about the robes and be like, what's going on?

To me, I would do it. It would be like waking up on a Saturday morning, and just, you know, you put your robe on and watch the cartoons. For the habits. I have so many questions about habits.

Yeah.

Yeah, that's true. Where?

Under the habits. All right. We're going to end this thing right now, Kevin. We're going to end it. Because I'm afraid that we're going to say something, and I don't want to say anything like that.

the Conclave? Are you a movie guy? I did. Is that how true to form? I haven't seen it yet, but they speak very highly of it.

I mean, I enjoyed the movie. I think some of it, you know, the ceremony and those kinds of things. But it's a movie, so I took it as exaggerated and certainly not to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it. You know, the outcome was a little out there but, you know, it was fun. It was acted well. I'd love to see Stanley Tucci as Pope. There you go.
