All right, it's Mojo in the Morning Show. We're broadcasting at Ford Field right now, and we're doing this broadcast here because today is the Great Lakes Broadcast and Sports Media Academy. There are a bunch of young broadcasters that are going to be coming to Ford Field here any minute now. As a matter of fact, you guys may be on your way down to see us. And here with us this morning is the president of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, Casey Jones, yes, is with us here. Thank you guys so much for having me. Thanks for being here today, too. Oh, I appreciate it. Casey, I know you're a broadcaster. Speak right into that microphone there for a second. You can't hear because you've got the headphones. I don't know if the – I can't hear in my headphones anyway. By the way, just to prove to these kids that broadcasting isn't as glitzy and glamorous as it used to be, I want them to come down here and try to work some of this equipment that we're working with right now. All right?

That's what today's all about.

Isn't it? Yeah, right. Well, the cool thing with broadcasting, Casey, you're a TV guy, right? You came up in television?

Yeah, I spent 15 years in Grand Rapids, worked at Wood TV. I was a sports anchor, news anchor, community affairs director. I cut my teeth on camera.

Yeah. Zach, can you hear his mic, or do we need to turn that up a little bit? Because I can't hear it in my headphones as well. If you could turn it up a little bit. Yeah, turn his microphone up a little bit, guys. Casey, the one beautiful thing about nowadays compared to even when I, because I'm older than you are, came up. Nowadays, anybody has an opportunity to broadcast through podcasting, through social media, TikTok videos. It's a wonderful world we live in, and I love that the Michigan Association of Broadcasters is smart enough to understand that we still need, though, to have professionals that mentor and are there for these young talent.

That's one of the key messages that we want kids to leave with today is that, yeah, you've got a microphone, you've got a camera, you want to be a broadcaster you want to be a journalist but you got to be trained to do it and so we're fortunate enough to have professionals in this industry from across the state of Michigan who've joined us here at Ford Field to help teach these kids the tools that they need in order to go out into the world and take a cell phone to become a broadcaster become a journalist to use those social media tools I mean technology is evolving at such a rapid rate and broadcasting goes hand and foot with the evolution of technology and so you know we're trying to make sure that our industry is at the cutting edge of it. And that starts with promoting it with young kids,

high school and college age kids. What a great event to be able to network and to meet different broadcasters that can then work alongside a lot of these young people and become mentors to them. I love that. I go back to when I was in college and wanting to do this so badly and trying to find those people to look up to and to kind of latch on to to follow in their footsteps and get advice from them and reach out to them and bounce ideas off of them so this is just these events are so important because of that so important and that's what we tell the kids today

is make that connection right i mean for sure don't be afraid to do that the people that are here from this industry we want to help they want to help you want to shake their head you want to look them in the eye and say hey what can i do to make this easier for you than it was for me And I wish, you know, 15, 20 years ago when I got into this business, I would have had that same opportunity. And how cool is it, too, to be coming to Ford Field where the Lions are playing so well right now, too?

So I want to ask you, today is, you said, high school, college age. And a lot of the kids have maybe a radio station possibly in their high school. I know we got in the Detroit area. And I don't know how much maybe you know more because you.

you live in grand rapids grand rapids a lot of high schools do they have uh radio stations

we we've got um we've got some of our uh high schools in the area that do have radio stations but the mab actually promotes the high school radio project so we we help set up radio stations in high schools we pay for the music licensing fees we teach them you know how how to uh cut the commercials how to cut the psas great we help with the music rotation we we want high schoolers to be active in radio. And we've had great success. East Kentwood is one of those high schools that has really bought into the high school radio project, and they're thriving with it.

I was mentioning to Shannon, Bloomfield Hills High School has probably one of the best high school radio stations in the country. And every year, you see awards given out to high schools for what they're doing. And to know that the MAB is there for them, I had no idea that was the case because licensing of music is probably one of the hardest things for us in broadcasting, why we can't play a lot of music on our podcast and, you know, it just costs so much money. But to know that you guys are willing to be there for them to help with some of the financial end. And honestly, I think our state government should be there more for these schools because it gives them an opportunity to learn a great career that honestly, I hate to say this, is almost a dying breed right now that we're not promoting enough. And they were talking about this last election was one of those ones where more people turned to broadcasting to learn what was going on and more people turned to podcasting to get to know what the candidates were all about. I think

this election cycle proved that broadcasting is more relevant than it has ever been and today Jay, if you're here when we have over a thousand kids packed Ford Field I think you're going to be excited about the future of broadcasting. These kids want to be a part of it they want to learn how they can have a future in this industry and that's what the MAD is doing with this Great Lakes Broadcast and Sports Media Academy.
