This is the Bishop Statement at Bishop State Community College. We want you to hear what our students, educators, and business leaders have to say.

00:01:06 - 00:01:51 | Speaker 1:

My name is Medterica, Terry LaMille, and my major is general education. Some of the obstacles I have overcame at Bishop State is proving that I can show up consistently, even when my life was heavy. There are moments where I still feel overwhelmed by balancing work, leadership, parenting, and school, but Bishop reminded me that I'm capable of growth and not perfection, that I'm supported as long as I'm committed to being a better person than I was yesterday. My peers can depend on me. I'm there being poured into, but some of those students don't know that the faculty and staff are really there for them. So when they don't know that, I'm their resource that explain and show them that they're here to help us.

00:01:51 - 00:01:58 | Speaker 5:

It's Mojo in the Morning Show. And Kev, with some crazy superstitions.

00:02:19 - 00:02:23 | Speaker 8:

No, I want to know the crazy superstitions. First off, are you all superstitious?

00:02:24 - 00:02:24 | Speaker 7:

Very.

00:02:24 - 00:02:26 | Speaker 8:

I'm pretty superstitious. You say very?

00:02:26 - 00:02:26 | Speaker 7:

Yeah.

00:02:26 - 00:02:27 | Speaker 8:

Okay.

00:02:27 - 00:02:46 | Speaker 7:

No. Yeah. I try not to because I try to let my faith say that I shouldn't be superstitious. Yeah. But I am superstitious. I do the same routines every single day. I one time was so superstitious, Shannon, remember this, when Haggerty Road was shut down, I would drive through the construction zone because I thought I was going to have a bad show.

00:02:46 - 00:02:50 | Speaker 6:

No, seriously. He thought it would affect our ratings if he took a different way into work.

00:02:50 - 00:02:53 | Speaker 8:

So you did something illegal as I drove through the barricades.

00:02:53 - 00:02:54 | Speaker 6:

Yeah, you're psychotic.

00:02:55 - 00:03:33 | Speaker 8:

Look, doc. So when I was younger, it made me so something happened recently with my mom. But it made me think about like the first time that I had a superstition that really hit me where I was like, OK, this means something. I'm going to pay attention to this. My grandma is crazy. She was on a couple of days ago, whatever the case was. she told me when i was younger when the sun is shining and it's raining at the same time that mean the devil beating his wife well this is listen she's and i was like so anytime anytime it's raining and the sun shouted over oh no miss satan wow but look so is that what

00:03:33 - 00:03:41 | Speaker 6:

miss satan i've never thought about a miss satan ever that's how i was when i was younger

00:03:41 - 00:03:42 | Speaker 8:

I was like, oh, my God.

00:03:42 - 00:03:45 | Speaker 1:

Or Lilith, depending on what we're talking about.

00:03:45 - 00:03:50 | Speaker 7:

Whenever I hear that, I think to myself, I think that there's going to be a rainbow. I never thought of it that way.

00:03:50 - 00:04:04 | Speaker 8:

I don't know. This is what she told me. I'll never forget it. But my mom was over at a place the other day, and she had like a bag with her and her purse on the couch. And I was like, why don't you just let me put it on the floor? She's like, no, you don't put purses on the floor. You don't ever put a woman's purse on the floor.

00:04:04 - 00:04:09 | Speaker 6:

Because I grabbed it. She was like, no, no, no, no. You don't put that on the floor. See, my purse is on the floor now. See, that's what I'm saying.

00:04:09 - 00:04:14 | Speaker 7:

Chelsea always yells at me if I try to put her purse on the floor. You don't put a woman's purse on the floor.

00:04:14 - 00:04:23 | Speaker 6:

But if I put my shoes on the kitchen counter or a table, my husband freaks out. That is bad luck forever and ever to him.

00:04:23 - 00:04:26 | Speaker 5:

Bad luck or dirty, yeah. Well, it's also dirty.

00:04:27 - 00:04:34 | Speaker 6:

If shoes go on the counter, I'm about to grab them, which I don't know why I do that, but I do it all the time. He freaks out.

00:04:34 - 00:04:44 | Speaker 7:

A purse on the floor, isn't it that you're going to go broke or something like that? That's what she said. Yep, there's some kind of like, yeah, we're... Yeah, I think that there's something to that.

00:04:45 - 00:04:46 | Speaker 1:

No, there's not.

00:04:46 - 00:04:47 | Speaker 7:

Yes, there is.

00:04:47 - 00:04:48 | Speaker 1:

There's nothing to that.

00:04:49 - 00:04:58 | Speaker 7:

I'm telling you. I agree. You put a woman's purse... First off, Megan, you said yesterday that you're broke. You put your purse on the floor. We got the answer. There's the answer right there.

00:04:58 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 1:

More blame being placed.

00:05:00 - 00:05:07 | Speaker 3:

on me got it absolutely asia what's up it's mojo in the morning hey uh okay like you were saying

00:05:07 - 00:05:12 | Speaker 5:

my grandma told me when it was thundering out that was saying like yelling out

00:05:12 - 00:05:19 | Speaker 7:

wait say that again can you take us off speaker yeah pick up pick up pick up the phone yeah okay

00:05:19 - 00:05:25 | Speaker 3:

yeah your mom your mom told you when it was thundering out what yeah so when i was thundering

00:05:25 - 00:05:34 | Speaker 5:

I went to Thundering House. That was Satan's life. Like, bring me out. It wasn't the, like, the Thunder Lake or the Sunshine. Like, I was bringing in my household at least.

00:05:34 - 00:05:35 | Unknown:

Okay.

00:05:35 - 00:05:42 | Speaker 5:

And then my grandma, she, you can't point with your pointer finger. You have to point with your thumb or else death is going to point back at you. Oh.

00:05:43 - 00:05:51 | Speaker 2:

That's wild. Because you got three fingers pointing at you? Is that what it is? Yeah. Yeah. Dude, I heard that one.

00:05:51 - 00:05:55 | Speaker 3:

Hey, thank you for the call. Christine, what's up? It's Mojo on the morning. Hi.

00:05:56 - 00:06:02 | Speaker 6:

Hi. I was always taught that yellow lighters are bad luck. That what?

00:06:02 - 00:06:04 | Speaker 3:

Yellow lighters are bad luck. Why?

00:06:05 - 00:06:37 | Speaker 6:

Yeah. I thought it was white. That's something I was always taught. There's been times when we've gone to our local party store, and they give us a free lighter here and there, and they'll hand us a yellow lighter, and we will literally just say no thank you. um we've gotten packs of party lighters too and we just throw those away why yellow though what is it with the yellow yeah i thought it was white it's bad luck it's bad luck if you look it up i've always been taught yellow lighters are bad luck okay hold on we're gonna look it up right

00:06:37 - 00:06:43 | Speaker 8:

now speaking of yellow did you know you're supposed to wear yellow underwear on new year's for good luck?

00:06:44 - 00:06:46 | Speaker 2:

I've never heard that. Wow. Yeah.

00:06:47 - 00:06:51 | Speaker 3:

Yellow underwear? Random. Is that because if you pee yourself, nobody knows?

00:06:52 - 00:06:53 | Unknown:

I know.

00:06:54 - 00:07:33 | Speaker 3:

Yellow lighters, bad luck. It says yellow lighters are considered bad luck. They say that the superstition has been held for such a long, since I guess the beginning of time. But then they also say white lighter myth began in the 1960s when white Bic lighters were commonly used by Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, and Janis Joplin. So there's things which I have no idea. They're all dead or something? Oh, is that what it is? Okay. The purse on the floor thing, you should see all these text messages. Absolutely, don't you ever put my purse on the floor that is 734.

00:07:33 - 00:07:41 | Speaker 7:

You know what I heard, though, then? Bananas, bad luck, because everybody who's ever died had a banana. That's how crazy y'all sound. I was like, wait.

00:07:42 - 00:07:55 | Speaker 3:

another three three one three says work at a restaurant and we have never put a purse on the floor we always bring chairs over for their purses um hannah what's your superstition that you have

00:07:55 - 00:08:02 | Speaker 4:

hannah i have to turn the lamp in my living room down to one percent brightness every night or else

00:08:02 - 00:08:06 | Speaker 3:

i believe my toddler won't sleep through the night interesting so it happened one night and you just

00:08:06 - 00:08:11 | Speaker 4:

kept going with it huh yeah i was like the first time she slept the night as a newborn and i was

00:08:11 - 00:08:25 | Speaker 9:

like that's it forever let me tell you something worked every as a mom those are like the critical that you just cling to please dear god let her sleep through the night i'll do anything i will turn this down to one percent every night for the rest of my life and they sound like it

00:08:25 - 00:08:43 | Speaker 3:

worked i'm not gonna lie to you though i'm a sports person right i played sports and stuff and you wear something that's the good luck thing you go on a winning streak you'll continue to wear it you know i mean i see it you see it probably with the pistons guys those guys are probably the most superstitious guys ever they go on a streak of scoring and cade cunningham you know probably

00:08:43 - 00:08:48 | Speaker 2:

has to have hit some of his little things the same meal before the games oh yes dan did you notice

00:08:48 - 00:09:06 | Speaker 3:

dan campbell one of the rumors was that dan campbell wore the same sideline shirt throughout the whole year while you'd see other coaches in the league wearing they would always tell them the nfl would tell them what shirts to wear and they said dan campbell would always wear that same Just very plain, black, like Nike sideline shirt.

00:09:06 - 00:09:07 | Speaker 2:

Did he wear it the last game?

00:09:08 - 00:09:13 | Speaker 3:

You know what? I think that he started switching it up the last couple of games. So maybe you know.

00:09:13 - 00:09:14 | Speaker 2:

That would be crazy.

00:09:14 - 00:09:19 | Speaker 3:

Maybe you know. Actually, Megan is right something with bananas. What's up, Lexi?

00:09:21 - 00:09:31 | Speaker 1:

Hi. So I have my daughter in the car, and we are avid voters. And we wanted to call in. It's really bad luck to have bananas on a boat.

00:09:31 - 00:09:33 | Speaker 3:

Really? Oh, no. Why? What does it do?

00:09:34 - 00:09:41 | Speaker 1:

No idea. I brought a banana on the boat one time when my husband and I were dating, and he instantly threw it off the boat and freaked out.

00:09:41 - 00:09:51 | Speaker 3:

My gosh. Yeah. You know what? If I'm on a boat, if somebody brings a banana now, I'm going to throw it overboard. Them. Misfit Nicole. What's going on, Nicole?

00:09:53 - 00:09:54 | Speaker 6:

Good morning, everybody.

00:09:54 - 00:09:56 | Speaker 3:

Good morning. Good morning. What's going on?

00:09:57 - 00:10:00 | Speaker 6:

So I was listening to the topic. I grew up with a black...

00:10:00 - 00:10:39 | Speaker 8:

southern grandmothers so i have so many superstitions that i still practice so one of them is like if you sweep my feet with a broom i have to spit on it oh okay i don't know why but it's bad luck if you don't okay who told you that grandma oh grandma okay and then in my house as a child if spiders were in the house never threw them away we would pick them up put them in a napkin, you put it in your purse, and it means you're going to get money. Absolutely not. I'd rather, I would rather die than putting a spider in my purse.

00:10:40 - 00:10:41 | Speaker 4:

If you're going to get money, you're going to get big.

00:10:41 - 00:10:58 | Speaker 8:

I always thought ladybugs were good luck if you phone them in your house. You get cash. If you've got a long-legged spider in your house. A daddy long-legged? That was your grandma just trying to get you to pick up the spiders everywhere. That's daddy long-legged money, baby. That's daddy long-legged money. Put that spider in a napkin to keep you pushing.

00:10:58 - 00:11:05 | Speaker 6:

So, Nicole, Well, Nicole, do you always hold on to these things because you were taught them? Like, do you actually follow everyone else?

00:11:05 - 00:11:18 | Speaker 8:

Absolutely. Like, my mother does too. Like, on New Year's Day, Ann had to walk in the house first. I couldn't walk in the house because a man has to cross the threshold. Oh, I don't like that one.

00:11:19 - 00:11:23 | Speaker 6:

And that is New Year's because it starts the New Year off right.

00:11:23 - 00:11:29 | Speaker 8:

New Year's Day, yeah, because it starts the New Year off right. That doesn't feel like New Year's Day. That just feels like...

00:11:29 - 00:11:41 | Speaker 6:

You know what you should do with Ed? You should say to him, and she also said, you have to walk in there and then clean it all up for me and then call me when it's all done. Get him to pick up some stuff around there.

00:11:42 - 00:11:45 | Speaker 8:

And you can't wash because you'll wash your relatives away.

00:11:46 - 00:11:50 | Speaker 6:

Oh, my gosh. So, wait a second. You haven't washed yourself? What are you talking about?

00:11:51 - 00:11:54 | Speaker 8:

No, on New Year's Day, you can't wash.

00:11:54 - 00:11:55 | Speaker 6:

You can't wash anything.

00:11:55 - 00:12:02 | Speaker 8:

Because you'll wash your loved ones. No, you can't wash. You wash your body, but you can't wash clothes because you'll wash your loved ones.

00:12:02 - 00:12:08 | Speaker 6:

By the way, that's because your grandma never wanted to do laundry on New Year's Day. She was celebrating it.

00:12:08 - 00:12:09 | Speaker 8:

No, call me in and support me.

00:12:09 - 00:12:16 | Speaker 6:

No, this is all craziness. Hold on, I like this one. Bianca, what was the superstition?

00:12:17 - 00:12:29 | Speaker 7:

So my grandma told us that red lipstick was for whores. It's not a superstition. It's just a prejudice. There's a difference.

00:12:29 - 00:12:33 | Speaker 6:

I think she may be right with that one. She's on to something.

00:12:33 - 00:12:41 | Speaker 7:

No, no, no. We all look really good in red lipstick, so I really hope not because we all wear red lipstick. Y'all got a beer here with red lipstick.

00:12:41 - 00:13:12 | Speaker 5:

This is the Bishop Statement at Bishop State Community College. We want you to hear what our students, educators, and business leaders have to say.

00:14:22 - 00:15:00 | Speaker 4:

My name is Patrick Pettway, and I am getting my Associates of Science and General Education with an emphasis in business administration. To me, it was a no-brainer. When you go out here and you're looking for funding to go back to college as a 40-year-old man, I got six people in my household. The extra money just doesn't just grow out of trees. For me to be able to be accepted through FAFSA and to have Bishop State pay for all of my tuition, Not only that, but the curriculums, you know, they make it so easy to understand on their website. Like I said, I'm a 40-year-old man, so I don't use technology too much, but it was very understandable where I needed to go. It was extremely fast these past two years.

00:15:00 - 00:15:06 | Speaker 2:

Things have just moved in a total different type of way. It's like its own moving entity to see things manifest the way that they do.
