This is Mojo in the Morning.

00:02:04 - 00:03:21 | Speaker 4:

Mojo in the Morning. So, when I tell you guys this story, I want to know what people's thoughts are about it, But I also want to know if this has ever happened because I think this was more common maybe when I was younger or even older than that. Like, you know, even like the next generation, it was common. So friends of ours, friends of Chelsea and I have a son that is an eighth grader. He is finishing his eighth grade. He's going to go on to high school next year. and they just recently found out that actually they didn't recently find out he was dating a girl they knew he was dating a girl but they never really met this girl they just knew that there was a girl at school that he was dating and they just recently found out that this girl was much older than this 14 year old or 13 year old eighth grader was when he came home and told his parents that he had to get a tuxedo to take her to senior prom. Shut up. Eighth grade senior. No, senior prom. Like 10th, 11th, 12th whatever it is. How old is it? 12th grade.

00:03:22 - 00:03:25 | Speaker 1:

I don't like that.

00:03:26 - 00:04:19 | Speaker 4:

So he is 13 years old and he has been dating a girl and I don't know if she's 17 or 18 now. Maybe she's a young senior but he's been dating this girl for like the last year or so and she's taking him to prom or wants to take him to prom now the thing that's interesting is and don't call them absentee parents because the kid goes to the middle school that's right next to the high school so they're all pretty much right there with each other and they'll share like they their gym uh that they you know the kid plays sports in and does all this stuff in is they go to the high schools you know for the sports because it's all like everybody's compacted in the same district area right you know um and i'm like as a dad i'm looking at that going way to go kid you know what i mean like i'm looking at the moms like usually the mom is like what yeah like what's going on here

00:04:19 - 00:04:29 | Speaker 3:

what high school senior is taking an eighth grader to her prom why are you talking to an eighth grader well that's the obvious question because he don't look like an eighth grader

00:04:29 - 00:04:31 | Speaker 1:

But that's weird.

00:04:31 - 00:04:55 | Speaker 4:

That's creepy. But even before that, you said they'd been dating for a year. So he was actually in seventh grade. Well, I don't know technically if it was beginning of this year or not. But I do know this. First off, it's crazy because you have to admit this. There are these kids that you're looking at the kid going, okay, I can't tell the difference if you're 13 years old or 19 years old. You know what I mean?

00:04:55 - 00:04:56 | Speaker 2:

Everybody looks more mature. You ask.

00:04:57 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 4:

Yeah. Right. But do you ask if you're a...

00:05:00 - 00:05:02 | Speaker 2:

and you're in high school? Yes. Really?

00:05:02 - 00:05:03 | Speaker 5:

Yes. Do you have to?

00:05:03 - 00:05:06 | Speaker 3:

Yes. What's the

00:05:06 - 00:05:11 | Speaker 5:

Michigan law on that? If you're 17 years old, can you date a 13-year-old? I think you can. Probably legally.

00:05:11 - 00:05:17 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, I don't care if it's legal. It's still weird. His question is legal. I don't care. We're only

00:05:17 - 00:05:52 | Speaker 1:

worried about the law. I mean, I'm trying to think, because I dated, when I was a freshman in high school, I dated a senior, and I think for a year or two, it probably wasn't kosher. That to me AKA legal. Oh, my, my mom was so up in arms about that. And we ended up dating for almost eight years. And now we're very, very close family friends. But at the time I can remember my mom equating it to a child. She's like, you are just learning how to crawl. He is already knows how to run. You are in two very different stages of your life. This is not going to work.

00:05:52 - 00:05:57 | Speaker 5:

I said to, uh, to our friends, I go, do you realize that this is the reverse Bill Belichick?

00:05:57 - 00:06:14 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, I mean, if it's the way that, you know, you're referencing it, where the child that's younger is a guy, I'm fully allowing my son to operate in this relationship. Yeah. But if the shoe is on the other foot, I'm not going to act like I would be the same way.

00:06:14 - 00:06:15 | Speaker 5:

If you were at a daughter.

00:06:15 - 00:06:18 | Speaker 4:

Hell no. So it's funny. The double standard is there, and I'm okay with it.

00:06:18 - 00:06:33 | Speaker 5:

I'm four years, excuse me, that's called, by the way, brought to you by Starbucks Egg Bites. i am four years older than chelsea so this would be like me taking her to my senior prom

00:06:33 - 00:06:52 | Speaker 1:

but it's just so different when you're talking about middle school and high school for starters and at that age i do also think like it's and it is a double standard like we said the girl guy thing like the fact that it's an older girl and a younger boy can't even say guy

00:06:52 - 00:07:16 | Speaker 5:

boy he just started puberty 13 years old no he's not you start puberty younger don't you not me i had hair on my pickle when i was like thinking of fifth grade i did get that image out of your actually it wasn't a pickle at that time it was a cucumber stop it i like pickles stop it it had to develop into a pickle what's going on how you doing lucy hi i'm good what's that what

00:07:16 - 00:07:41 | Speaker 2:

do you think of this whole thing i i was telling um it was at lydia or that actually i went to high school i don't know so much about it because i really wasn't involved but but one of the junior girls actually got pregnant by an eighth grader wow and it was like the talk of like the town i didn't really know too much info about it it was just one of those things where i was just like Oh, my God, that's kind of weird and crazy.

00:07:42 - 00:07:42 | Speaker 5:

Wow.

00:07:43 - 00:07:46 | Speaker 2:

Everybody always said something.

00:07:46 - 00:07:51 | Speaker 5:

Did he look older than, you know, he was?

00:07:53 - 00:07:53 | Speaker 2:

Yeah.

00:07:54 - 00:07:55 | Speaker 5:

Or did they both look younger?

00:07:55 - 00:08:05 | Speaker 2:

I mean, but I guess old. I mean, he kind of looked older, but I don't know. I mean, listen, I see some of these kids.

00:08:05 - 00:08:20 | Speaker 5:

i see some of these kids that they've got more facial hair than uh than kev i mean you see some of these kids can grow some amazing beards you know indeed what's up sarah hi hi so um i'm a

00:08:20 - 00:09:00 | Speaker 3:

mental health therapist for kids yeah and um this comes up very often with teenagers where the parents are like losing their mind because a kid is, you know, the age difference. So legally in Michigan, kids can date, um, for whatever, pretty much any age, um, as long as they're under 18. However, the legal age of consent for anything sexual is 16. So if one of them is 16 or older and the other one is under, then the parents can technically charge them with statutory rape.

00:09:00 - 00:09:04 | Speaker 5:

Can the parents sign off on it being an okay thing?

00:09:06 - 00:09:11 | Speaker 3:

No, honestly, it's just kind of one of those things that if the parents are okay with it, then they wouldn't press charges.

00:09:12 - 00:09:29 | Speaker 5:

I always wondered that, like when you'd see these stories where there would be the dating going on like this and the parents were okay with it. So eventually you better be a good boy or a good girl. Otherwise, mom and dad could one day come back and charge you with that.

00:09:29 - 00:09:29 | Speaker 3:

Yeah.

00:09:29 - 00:09:30 | Speaker 5:

Yeah.

00:09:30 - 00:09:38 | Speaker 3:

Oh, yeah. Or like if the boy is older and the girl is younger and the girl gets pregnant.

00:09:39 - 00:09:40 | Speaker 5:

Oh, then it comes out.

00:09:40 - 00:09:48 | Speaker 3:

And then it comes out bad all of a sudden. Yeah. Where the parents suddenly aren't okay with it. Yeah. Yeah.

00:09:48 - 00:09:51 | Speaker 5:

Crazy. Donna, what's happening? It's Mojo in the Morning.

00:09:52 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 2:

Good morning. Yeah, the whole scenario is just kind of crazy. Like, my daughter was just in the car, just dropped her off to school. And she.

00:10:00 - 00:10:10 | Speaker 4:

said absolutely not she just turned 18 on friday she's like taking an eighth grader to a senior prom she's like absolutely not i'm surprised the school even allows it well i don't know if they

00:10:10 - 00:10:19 | Speaker 3:

are going to because i think that that's going to be one of those things where they have to sign off on it i thought it was weird when the high school kids will bring like you did the older kid i did

00:10:19 - 00:10:34 | Speaker 6:

bring my boyfriend back for my junior prom and he was already in college and first off it was not that fun because he didn't know anybody i felt like i was babysitting him i felt like it was on me for him to have a good time and also yeah also um he was babysitting you yeah i don't know how

00:10:34 - 00:10:45 | Speaker 5:

that worked at your school but mine was they couldn't be 21 or older so you could bring somebody over you like that had graduated high school but they had to be 20 yeah which i don't

00:10:45 - 00:11:00 | Speaker 3:

think he was at that point donna thanks for the call thank you take care of yourself yeah that makes sense yeah listen to this one hold on samantha are you there yes hey samantha we're talking about an eighth grader going to a senior in high school's prom what's the story that you

00:11:00 - 00:11:23 | Speaker 4:

have for us um i was eight years old at the time my sisters my oldest sister's eight years older than me she was in eighth grade and she tried to go to her boyfriend's senior prom but they wouldn't allow her in um you have to have permission at our school you have to have permission from them in order to bring somebody that doesn't go to that school yeah even though she was in middle school and he was in high school it wasn't the same building so they

00:11:23 - 00:11:50 | Speaker 3:

wouldn't allow them what did your parents think about your sister dating an older guy like that an older boy they didn't care really and we're okay with it that's amazing it was dad because i was gonna say did dad own guns i mean that's all i would learn to think dad's gonna be right after you uh what's up joey hey how's it going good when you were in school you did this uh not

00:11:50 - 00:12:09 | Speaker 2:

this not a uh senior in an eighth grade but i um we started talking i was a sophomore and she was a seventh grader at the end of the year we ended up getting together when i was a junior and she was in eighth grade and we stayed together for two and a half years wait a second you were a

00:12:09 - 00:12:13 | Speaker 3:

sophomore with a seventh grader you don't think that that still seemed a little bit weird

00:12:13 - 00:12:36 | Speaker 2:

well okay so it does sound weird but you i mean like you're driving beginning of the year you're dropping her off at like middle school like that's crazy no so so we we weren't dating then but like we had started talking one of our mutual friends actually um encouraged us to talk and so it wasn't

00:12:36 - 00:12:45 | Speaker 3:

until later on that we actually ended up getting together quick question for you you guys weren't having sex at all when you were in high school, were you?

00:12:47 - 00:12:54 | Speaker 2:

No. Not, I mean, we did later on, but it was I was a senior, and she was a freshman. Okay, so

00:12:54 - 00:12:58 | Speaker 3:

you'd go to her parents' house and stuff, and they knew you were a high school kid?

00:13:00 - 00:13:00 | Speaker 2:

Yeah.

00:13:01 - 00:13:04 | Speaker 3:

That's amazing. These parents are unbelievable, huh? That's wild.

00:13:05 - 00:13:18 | Speaker 2:

But it, I mean, I was a good kid. I wasn't, uh... I don't give a damn how good you were. It wasn't all shady. You could have been Pope Francis. to death. You'd be right where he is. No, no. Her parents loved me.

00:13:18 - 00:13:42 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, that's the thing. I think the parents end up going, oh, I really like Joey. His name is Joey. You know what I mean? There's not a Joey ever that's a bad kid. I love this Joey. That's what they want you to think. Joey, I'll tell you, yeah. And then when you break that seventh grade girl's heart, that dad's going to kick your ass. That little Joey mother effer. You know what I mean? Where is that Joey?

00:13:42 - 00:13:43 | Speaker 2:

Her dad was a POS.

00:13:44 - 00:14:10 | Speaker 3:

He was, oh, well, there you go. That's the reason why she's a seventh grader dating a sophomore. The dad's a POS out of the business. We need dad in her life. All right. Well, thank you for the call, buddy. You guys aren't together still, are you? No. Okay. I always wondered about that. Like the people that met in middle school and continued on and stuff. Yeah. That's amazing. All right. That's nasty, bro. Yeah. It's nasty. Come on, dog. In a seventh grade.

00:14:10 - 00:14:11 | Speaker 1:

It's nasty.

00:14:11 - 00:14:12 | Speaker 3:

What's up, Stacey?

00:14:12 - 00:14:28 | Speaker 1:

hey good morning you guys I'm wondering I'm wondering if that girl even knows that he is an 8th grader because these kids lie so much over Snapchat she could think that he's a senior from another school

00:14:28 - 00:15:09 | Speaker 3:

she does know because they had to get permission or trying to get permission to go to prom but with that said you're right you know what I mean honestly I see this is no different than the older guy that's you know trying to hit on the younger girl i think this is still even though the ages are different it's still sexual predatory you know let's normalize asking for birth certificates honestly should you have to carry it around yeah they're too young to have driver's licenses yeah I feel like this is one of those things where we need to do that to catch a predator thing. Like, do you ever see the guy that's in the grocery store or that chases down the guys in the grocery store and screams,

00:15:09 - 00:15:15 | Speaker 1:

This guy tried to pick up! They're a teenager away! Start punching him.

00:15:15 - 00:15:27 | Speaker 3:

Well, yeah, and he starts beating the crap out of the guy. If I ever witnessed that one day, I would say, Hey, keep your voice down. I'm trying to grocery shop here right now.

This is the Bishop Statement at Bishop State Community College. We want you to hear what our students, educators, and business leaders have to say.

00:16:37 - 00:17:22 | Speaker 1:

I would say Bishop State's like a home for people. It may not be like a four-year where you have a dorm, you have a roommate, you have a rec center, but it's still a place you can go meet new people, classmates, put them in the hallway, make friends with advisors on all these teachers and everything like that. It's just a place you can feel like yourself and not try to be the thing you don't want to be. With this program, I learned networking a lot. We've had two dinners with heads of different companies dealing with shipping or even game design builds, dealing with AutoCAD or 3D modeling. So really being able to meet new people or meet heads of new people has been really helpful. I don't come from a wealthy family, so four years were kind of not out the picture, but less probable for me to go to. Bishop State, with my scholarship, it cut my price in half and made it way easier for me to go to school for the same 12 credits I would go for a four-year.

00:17:22 - 00:17:29 | Speaker 2:
