much of the morning we got a second date update coming up here in just a little bit beforehand And though I want to bring awareness to this because this is such a tragically sad story that is honestly happening way too often that we don't hear about. And yesterday, because of how immense this tragedy was, it has been brought to our forefront. And hopefully it's stories like this that will make people more aware. But unfortunately, I feel like people will just let it go away and it will just simply just never be talked about again. Did you guys all hear the story about the two-year-old and nine-year-old that died, that were living in their car with their mom, their mom's vehicle that was parked at the casino in Greektown?

Yeah, this story is just gutting. Terrific.

So story just to kind of bring you up to speed on this thing. Um, Tatiana Williams, oh, that's our alarm going off again.

What is going on here all day?

We're falling apart. Aren't we? Uh, Tatiana Williams, um, is now in the news and the city of Detroit and some of its services are definitely being scrutinized over the fact that this homeless mom who is living in her van that was parked in the casino parking lot at the hollywood casino um ran out of gas they were using the car's heater to keep them uh warm and the temperatures got so low that two of the kids had to get rushed to the hospital and actually they believe that the two children were rushed to the hospital and were probably dead on arrival getting to the hospital uh this woman now it turns out had reached out to city services uh months before to try to get help and everything kind of fell on deaf ears and not just once multiple times yeah on at least three

different occasions she reached out seeking help i'm going to play for you some audio first off

i'm going to play for you audio from the police chief and then audio from the uh the mayor speaking about this but first i want to play you from channel 7 wxyz they had the mom on and they let her just speak and i actually thought that the reporter who did this uh this story was uh great in the fact his name is darren cunningham he did the story and just let her speak and they just played her speaking it's a two and a half minute conversation with her explaining what happened to

her yesterday i woke them up to wake them up from school

my son wasn't moving and i kept saying said he please get up please please let me just get up don't do this to me

And I tried to give him CPR because I'm a senior in the medical assistant. I've been working there since I was 17. I tried to give him CPR, and I was just giving him CPR. I just kept saying, Fetty, don't leave me. Don't leave me, please. I saw the green and brown stuff come out of his mouth. I instantly rushed him to the hospital. I was yelling out the window, stop, stop, stop. We got to get through traffic. My baby, he's dying. We get to the hospital. I told Valet, can you go get some help? He took too long, so I got out to come and get help. They came to the car instantly, grabbed my baby on his head, get a stretch. He's not breathing. Help. Cold blue. Everybody tried. I didn't even know my two-year-old was dying. I was in it with my nine-year-old. And they brought her in right after they pronounced him dead. and my mama came to me she said yaya that's what we call her but her name is amelia we just call her yaya and they said she wasn't breathing and they pronounced her dad too i asked everybody for help i called out of state i called cities i didn't know I call, I see these people ask me to call I even ask Detroit I've been on Camelot for the longest Everybody now Wants to help After I lost two kids I've been asked for help I feel like it wasn't Daytime I did everything I was supposed to do They had everything Everything they wanted Only thing they didn't have was a house but from electronics to clothes anything they asked me for my kids didn't even get whooped i lost the one who made me a mother i lost a two-year-old it hurt losing two kids in one night you know i don't wish this on nobody and if you can get help please go get help because i don't want nobody else to go through what i'm feeling just wherever you can get help from if it's not from the city to state no other city or state just go like you don't have to you don't have to suffer

her kids froze to death she um she called she said on multiple occasions she says in that that clip that she told channel seven she says that uh she told them exactly what they were doing that they were living in their car and that they were were parked um and she was ignored and to be quite honest with you this is probably one of who knows how many that have done this exact same thing and how many more kids are going to have to die before something is done and i'm just blown away i i'm i always i i hear this stuff and i'm going this is the United States of America, for God's sakes. You know what I mean? I want to hear from the police chief. So Detroit has an interim police chief right now who came out and spoke about this and about an investigation. This is Todd Bettison, the interim police chief of the city of Detroit, speaking about these two babies that died.

Children were asleep in a car on the ninth floor of a casino parking structure, the Hollywood Casino, When the mother realized that her son wasn't breathing, she did make a 911 call, but the friend in a Buick immediately transported the 9-year-old while en route to Children's Hospital. They realized at some point that the 2-year-old wasn't breathing, and so a telephone call was made to the friend that was transporting the 9-year-old to return so that the 2-year-old could be picked up. The whole entire family get into the Buick, and they all were transported to Children's Hospital.

How is it that they were in the parking lot and the casino didn't know that there was people living in a car in a parking lot? I'm shocked by that. A question that needs to be answered. The mayor, Mayor Duggan, who's actually the outgoing mayor, he's going to run for governor of the state of Michigan. and this doesn't look good on his watch, talking about the city services that dropped the ball big time on this.

This family reached out to our homeless response team on November 25th. They had reached out earlier in the summer and even back into the previous year, but reached out on November 25th, essentially saying they had been living with a family.

family, they were no longer going to be able to keep living with that family, and needed a place to go. And in the course of that conversation, there was no resolution reached. I want a review of our call center and the housing specialists. I want to make sure that when people call, they get very clear options. We have to make sure that we do everything possible uh to make sure that this doesn't happen again absolutely facts and our city man we

shouldn't be judged on how many draft parties we can get or how many all-star bids we can acquire like if we can't take care of our citizens and provide basic needs for people who need assistance and need help then we're not doing what we're supposed to be doing the uh police chief uh said

i guess uh in during that interview the wasn't in the clip that i played but said that they are presenting the facts to the wayne county prosecutor kim worthy to decide whether or not the mom should be charged so i mean to me i'm wondering where why why well is that i think that they're saying that she should have she shouldn't have been staying in the van when the van ran out of gas

that was providing the heat i believe during people somebody said during the press conference yesterday and i don't know if it was i don't know who it was but had said that the mom that outreach workers were sent out to assess the situation and the the mom never called back yet the outreach workers also never checked back in so i'm wondering if that like i i can't wrap my brain around that piece that the mom could be criminally charged and i i don't know why we we don't have all the facts

obviously there's something but there's something but we do know we do know for one thing that they probably get a bajillion of these calls and they probably and they probably have five people working and if that working in that department and it's honest i hate to say this it's probably a department that's set up not for anything other than just to look good i know it sounds weird to say that it's not set up to actually fix things it's set up to just oh yeah yeah yeah we'll send

it down there you know i don't even think it's that i just think they're not funded enough for the need and the need is exponentially growing and quickly i mean if you look at the homelessness numbers from a year ago till today it's gone up i think what is it like 12 percent rise in

homelessness if not more like i they're not properly staffed or resourced for the need and i do love what mayor douggan said about everything needs to be made more concise the options need to be made clearer because i think that that's a huge part of the problem is that they're they're not very well organized or laid out and so it's just like these these poor men and women are going

where where do i turn to next and the focus shouldn't be how or why are we going to prosecute the mom like that doesn't need to be the resolution because there are we don't want to take a mother away from the children that she has left i guess the the focus needs to be where the holes how do

we plug them and how do we help this family now when chelsea was working uh at that homeless shelter one of the things they said was they said the state would take away took away a lot of the funding um for their shelters and so a lot of the salvation army got lost funding a lot of these shelters lost funding and the sad sad thing is without you know places like the detroit rescue mission you know that's out there which is a lot of times privately funded but should be getting money from state and federal they're not getting it because it's getting taken away from them and

we look at all of these arenas that get tax breaks to build these multi-million dollar properties and you got people out here who kids dying in cars because they don't got heat the sad thing is

with this too is it will build like i said it started off with this it will build awareness right now we'll all talk about this but then the next story comes and then the next story is not

about this it'll be about something else you know i mean but i'm but i mean we're in media we're in journalism like that's that's what we do yeah right but it's people who are in these government agencies that are supposed to be doing the actual work yeah so when they hear these stories that's their job is to go out there and solve these issues what the hell are they doing yeah and i

will say this listen i don't know the whole story you know mom you know sitting in the in the van and all the rest of that stuff why did she not as you know as an adult be able to say hey the van went off it's now too cold in here they said that the temperatures got down into the 20s inside of that that vehicle well get in go try to go into a see if she can go to the detroit rescue mission or go

to one of these homeless shelters like how is she gonna get there i think so many people look at it

but how did she get to the hospital though there's a lot of people they did yeah she's got a friend they can do it go to a friend's house and why do why

are people that know that they have family and friends that are living in vans not taking them in like why are we not doing that there's so many different questions there's security guard doing for the parking lot they ain't noticed somebody was up there sleeping i don't even know if that's

a negative or if it's uh i saw you sleeping in the van i'm not gonna call the cops on you you're

already on hard times but i hate to say it though you got it to because you got kids that are living

in that thing you got to protect them but then she gets her kids taken away and how does she to afford the lawyer's fees, to get her kids back.

What's better, her kids taken away or the kids dying in the van?

Well, I think we can say that from the perspective now, it would have been kids taken away, but we don't know what it was a week ago.

I don't know. Listen, there's a lot of things that are messed up here. The unfortunate thing is that there are two kids that will never be able to live a life that they should have been able to live. Angel, what's going on?

Yeah, I'm just going to, just had to say, Like, it's not just your side over there by Detroit. Over here in Grand Rapids, there's a small town just north of Grand Rapids, Florida. I applied for their townhomes while I was still pregnant with my kid who's 10 months today. And I went to go check on my application last week, and they lost it. Like, I have to reapply. And I'm like, I applied over a year ago because we're currently, we're lucky enough, we have family who is letting us stay with them. But that's only going to be so long. When we have two kids, we pretty much take up their whole house.

yeah yeah and so and again uh probably three people working in that place or five people working in that place and they got a mound of people and and and so the pro the the problem is the problem is that in a country like this that we give so much to so many others we got to take care of our people and we got to take we got to we have a here you are a mom with her kids and we're not doing anything for them, but we're sending bajillions of dollars to every other place in the world and not doing anything for the people that are here that are going to die. Susan, what's going on?

Hi, I'm just going into work. I just, that story made me cry and stop my car because I feel like the last administration was allowing illegal immigrants.

Oh, see, no, no, no, no. we're not going to go in there. We're not going to go there. Cause I'm not going to go there because this has been happening way before even Biden was in office. And listen, I wasn't the biggest fan, but I'm, but I'm, but no, what I'm saying is this has been going on for way too long in our country. This has been going on way too long. And the problem, and the problem is the only way that we can control this is by us all standing up and saying enough is enough. If we are as you know, in Kevin's right, we do have a voice as a radio show. And the problem is what we end up doing is we go and find the family, help them out and get them in a home like we do a break and entering Christmas wish that solves the problem for the few that we do help. It doesn't solve the problem to continue to try to get, you know, have more people get helped. And I do think that we as a show, but also we as people listening to the show, we need to sit there and say to ourselves, what is wrong with the fact that we as a city have people living in a parking lot of a casino while people are going into that casino to throw crazy amounts of money out? You know what I mean? To me, that's...

That oxymoron, it just doesn't...

It's just crazy. And nothing against, you know what, you got money, go gamble. And I'm sure the people that go in there and win money would love to help this woman out. They probably just didn't know that she was there. But I'm just saying, in general, that we got to have services that help these people. And if you are in government and you're taking money away from the Salvation Army that can have more beds for people to sleep in at night so that they're not out on the streets during a snowstorm, a goddamn snowstorm.

Or the warming shelters or any of these. Take away money.

Covenant house. Take away money from your trips to go to, you know, outside of the country to go sit there and lobby for your supposedly business to come here.
