happen right uh correct apartment fires too correct a lot of people like you said they slip they think okay well the weather's warming up i don't have to pay attention to my fireplace my furnace yes you do you always have to be mindful make sure you turn that stove off that oven off If you're cooking, don't leave the house. If you're cooking or you're baking, Hey, it's grilling season. It's, it's approaching. I saw some people grilling the other day and it was like 30 out. So just please be mindful. Don't grill under an awning overhang or near the house or the garage. Be very careful.

Can I tell you something? I have seen this happen numerous times and it's happened to a few friends of mine, their first grill of the season. And they light their fight, their grill, their gas grill. and it poofs and blows up right in their face because the gas gets stuck somehow or I don't know how that is.

No, make sure you get an inspected, especially with those gas grills. Make sure you get an inspected. Make sure you get a fresh tank. It's worth the money. It's worth a couple extra bucks just to be safe.

traffic it seems like we're seeing some of the worst weather with the roads being nuts you know you saw that story that happened out in west michigan right with the yes the whiteout snow we were stuck in that we were actually on our way to irish and ionia at the time and then the icy streets and stuff um you guys go on a ton of those calls we do uh first of all we want everybody to

remember this always pull over to the right always be cautious and be mindful of us a lot of people I know we got these fancy sound systems in our cars, and we got our music turned all the way up. You're listening to 95.5, Mojo in the Morning. Yeah. You got it on blast. But please, if you see those flashing red lights, those blue lights, and you hear us, just pull over to the right. A lot of people panic and stop, or they pull over to the left. Always move over to the right.

I've been lecturing my daughters about that. Like, I know you like your music loud, but you got to make sure you can hear a siren coming, because you're going to be at an intersection and not know there's an emergency vehicle coming.

Can I tell you this, Chief? Yes. I don't know if this is bad to do, but I always pull over to the right, and then as soon as you guys pass, I chase after you because I figure I've got myself. No, I can't do that.

I figure that I'll pretend like I'm like a volunteer or something like that. I don't know. I know you guys don't have volunteer firemen. Oh, speaking of firemen, you're actually looking for firemen, right? Oh, we are.

What's that process like to become a firefighter?

Well, you got to be smart.

You got to be the person that wants to help people, that cares about people. You got to be 18. You got to have a high school diploma or the equivalent, maybe a GED. You got to pass a drug test. You can't have any felonies. You have to have a valid driver's license.

And then you teach them everything else.

We'll train you on everything.

Actually, you know, there's a great number of female firefighters in your department. And it's gone up since you've actually been the chief. Correct.

We're trying to increase that. That's why we say firefighters. Back in the day, back in the 70s, it was firemen. Fireman. Yeah. Now it's firefighters. And some of the roughest, toughest, bravest firefighters we have are our ladies. I love that.

Can I ask you a really important question? Absolutely. How come all firefighters are hot? They're all good looking. It is. Not proportionate to the general public. You're right.

I'd have to do some research on that. He's like, why did I come in here? Why? Is it your

uniform? Is it because they can make chili? What is it? We do make some darn good chili.

We've got some heck of a recipes.

We're going to be moving to Eastern Market sometime in the next decade. It's going to happen. And when it does, we better be getting regular invites to go over What station number is that?

They have a truck, for the listeners to describe, they have a truck that goes into parking garages that's like a special truck that will fit into the parking garages and be able to, you know, if there's an issue that's happening, you know, we've got a lot of parking garages in downtown Detroit. That's correct.

It's called the TAC, and it's short. Like you said, our actual fire trucks and our rescue squads and our ladder trucks and our fire engines, they can't fit in the parking structures, but this one can. And Lord forbid there's ever a fire or anything in there, we can get in there and go to work and take care of business.

Pretty soon, in the month of June, We're going to be doing a fire safety fair again. We do it every October, which is Fire Safety, Fire Prevention Month. But we're going to do it again in June this month, teach you how to use a fire extinguisher, how to have a fire escape plan out of your home. We're going to have our medics there to check your blood pressure, teach everyone in the city how to do hands-only CPR. That's huge, huge, huge. I need a refresher on that.
