But I want to talk about it real quick, if we can, because Shannon's been reporting this story this morning that was broken by one of the local Detroit television stations. A story about Detroit Lions wide receiver Jamison Williams. This guy's had a little bit of issues since he's joined this team. He's gotten suspended a couple of times. Got suspended last year for gambling, which is against the rules of the NFL. This year he got suspended for a substance. He had a substance in him that's banned by the league.

See, I think it's very important because when you say these things and they use them as headlines, it sounds very bad at face value. But when you take into account and you put it in context that he was gambling in a hotel room, not on the team's facility, which is a very important factor, but when you're traveling with the team, they still consider that as a part of the team's facility, which is stupid. gambling in a hotel room on college football games and then the cream that he was using wasn't on the band list. So it's not like he's doing things that are like... Is that what it was?

It was ADD medication. Yeah. What was it? He tested positive for a chemical that you're not supposed to have.

Our news tonight is that off-the-field issue now facing one of the Detroit Lions' young stars who is already serving a two-game suspension over performance-enhancing drugs.

And I'm Mike Duffy. It's a story that won't like to send shockwaves through the Detroit sports fan base and across the NFL.

Now, earlier this month, police nearly arrested Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams after they say he was caught with a concealed handgun during a traffic stop. Williams is not a CPL holder. The seven investigators exclusively obtaining body cam video of the police stop in Detroit. But were the cuffs taken off because of his high file status. Our questions have already triggered a Detroit police internal investigation. Here's

to have an investigator, Ross Jones, with what he has learned. I want to know if the fact that

this individual was a Detroit Lions player, did that play a factor in the decision? Of course it

did. It's just after midnight on October 8th, and near the corner of Connor and Jefferson, two Detroit police officers are pulling over a driver for speeding. In the passenger seat of the black Audi is Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams. Driving the car is his brother. Officers said they found the second gun under Jameson Williams' seat. They would take both weapons, finding that the first, found in the back seat, was registered to William's brother, who had a concealed pistol license. The gun under William's seat was registered to him, but he didn't have a CPL. And that, the officer concluded, was a problem. By the way, this guy has the creepiest voice.

Oh, I like his voice. You do? Yeah, it's very like... He's got a voice like this. He should do Dateline. Do you think so? He's got like the...

On Dateline. I'm going to take you out, okay? What? You're going to start procuring a concealed weapon, and I'm just explaining it to you so I can be transparent. It's my weapon, sir.

It's clear from the stop that the officer does not know who Williams is, but repeatedly he would remind him.

At one point, Williams' brother tells police that the gun belongs to him. But during the stop, the Lions wide receiver admits the gun is his.

I got a gun for protection. Do y'all know where I live at? Detroit.

Despite. He said that to the cop. I mean, J-Mo be out here, though.

Yeah, he'd be at the conies and all that. He'd really be hard. His celebrity status, Williams is handcuffed and placed in the back of the squad car. DPD commander Michael McGinnis says that was the right call. I feel that there was probable cause to arrest and that he was under arrest by the patrol officer. And because of that, he should have been conveyed to the Detroit Detention Center and processed. But Williams wasn't taken to jail. Instead, a supervisor was called to the scene. The department says that's not unusual for a high

file stop. It's a precaution to make sure I's are dotted and T's are crossed. So within a few minutes, a sergeant arrives on scene.

What's his name? James James Williams. The wide receiver?

Unlike the responding officers, the sergeant is a Lions fan. That's made clear by looking at his cell phone.

Oh, wait, he's got it. Like, the home screen is just bright blue and has a big lion's logo in the middle of it. Guy's a lion's fan. By the way, how's the cop that pulled him over not a lion's fan? What is going on?

Where did they hire that guy from? Over the next 30 minutes, the sergeant would make a series of phone calls to higher-ranking officials trying to determine if Williams needed to be arrested or if the driver's concealed pistol license covered both his and Williams' car. At one point, the sergeant can be heard whispering something to the arresting officer's partner.

He indicated he was so mad at them. And I think what he was referring to was the arresting officers, I assume in a jovial way, for them having made the traffic stop and detained the passenger.

It's unbelievable. This is Detroit. They don't pull you over for anything in Detroit. What's going on? This is Jameson Williams. This is a Lions player. By the way, we've got to get Jameson Williams hooked up with top-notch limousine and party bus so he doesn't get pulled over.

After conferring with multiple supervisors, the sergeant makes two more phone calls, and it sounds like Williams is about to be taken to jail.

Well, he's coming in. I want to make special accommodations. He's going to be going for carrying a concealed weapon.

But minutes later, everything changes. The sergeant speaks to a lieutenant who says Williams should be released from custody. We can't hear his side of the conversation.

Okay, beautiful. I'm good to let him go? You're a f***ing hero. Thank you so much.

Wow. They said to him, they said, let him go. And then he said.

have a gun and not a cpl so i can only speak to ohio laws because that's what i'm familiar with but i believe the issue here is that it was loaded and within arm's reach of him if it would have

been unloaded and like maybe no but i'm saying if you can have a gun at home why wouldn't you

automatically be like i have to go get my cpl well because it takes a class to go get it but But also, the other thing, too, is you can own a gun at home and not have a CPL. It just is all it is for carrying it around.

Or be like a sport shooter. Yeah. Or open carry. I don't know Michigan. Detroit police have launched.

I don't know Michigan open carry laws either, but I know Ohio has open carry, so you don't need it as long as people can see that you have it on you.

Internal Affairs investigation into this case and the decision not to arrest the Lions-wide receiver. Late last week, a warrant request was submitted to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, with Williams facing a charge of carrying a concealed weapon in a motor vehicle. Quite naturally, I

think the probable cause was there for an arrest on this particular individual. And my concern in this particular case is to make sure that we've done everything legitimately in this case.

Well, the following Sunday, Williams traveled with the team to Dallas, where he recorded three catches for 76 yards and a touchdown. There's the report. Today, the Detroit Lions released the following statement. It reads, Jameson made us aware immediately that he was a passenger in a routine traffic stop on October 8th. We discussed the incident with him and have kept the league informed of what we know. We understand he was released without incident or citation. It is now our understanding that the Detroit Police Department is revisiting the matter. Jameson has hired an attorney and will not be commenting further out of respect for the legal process. We also received a statement from Williams' attorney, Todd Flood. It reads, on October 8th my clients were pulled over for an alleged traffic violation. Todd Flood's the attorney? You know him? He's married to one of the people over at Channel 7 What? Yeah, he's married to Why compare the story there? Todd The flag is open This is craziness
