This is the Bishop Statement at Bishop State Community College. We want you to hear what our students, educators, and business leaders have to say.

Alan Lee, my major is drafting and design. In high school, I did it since my sophomore year, and I kind of wanted to continue it. It was the only thing I was good at. I didn't want to move to a four-year. I don't think I was mentally prepared. I found Bishop State. They had the program. I met a few people there. I ended up enrolling. The instructor, first day I met him, I told him about my background. He said, okay, great, you know about this. He built me straight to work. He didn't let me have any leeway. He pushed me to my limits. So I think that made me choose drafting design at Bishop State and stuck with it. The sport's amazing. All my instructors just want to see me succeed. They want to push me to my limit. They want to see me be the best I can be. get a job, just be as successful as I can be, and I really appreciate all of them. With my degree, as of right now, my plan is to work for the city of Mobile with their urban planning department, and I've already got a job shadow before, and hopefully I will internship over the summer. much on the morning show Shannon went to this like crazy place that's in Detroit that I'm telling you I don't know how stuff like this is legal and you were talking about it and we didn't get a chance to get a recap on how it was because then we left for like the weekend but explain this to me

I don't want to be disrespectful to this place because it's like a local business. But this is purely my opinion. I know there are a ton of people that absolutely love going here. I want to say it's Detroit's first and now only bathhouse that is still in existence. It's called the Schvitz.

And what is a bathhouse just for us who don't really know? It sounds like something illegal, doesn't it?

It's what you think it is. It's like a health... Like you take mass in there? I think maybe back in the day, there's like a pool that's now a cold plunge. It's just cold. But I think it maybe used to be... I don't know if it used to be warm. It was built like in the early 1900s.

It sounds to me like a place that you go to...

Very historical.

And you get a happy ending or something.

No, it's nothing like that. No, no, no, no. It's nothing like that. It is. It was built in 1930. Okay, so I'm looking it up now so I can be correct in my historical information. It is Detroit's original urban health club and the only historic bathhouse left in the city. So my sister loves exploring. As a family, we like, you know, trying new restaurants and seeing new places and whatever. And so my sister had said, let's all of the girls in the family. So my mom, myself and my two sisters get together and go and check it out. And so really we we did. And mind you, you can go on their website and see they have a dry sauna. They have a steam sauna. They have this cold plunge. They have a little, they have a smoking room, which I noticed right away when I came in.

I don't see women going into something like this.

You can. And there are certain days when it's women only and bathing suits are optional. Wow. So you can go naked. Same thing for guys. There are hours and days where only guys could go and bathing suits are optional. We went on a Friday night, so it was co-ed and you had to wear your bathing suit.

Do you understand that now I would never be able to go there knowing that there's naked of possible balls sitting on that place. Do they clean it?

I would hope so. I don't know. We walked in. As soon as we pulled up to this place, I looked at my sister's and I was... like i i'm looking at the outside of it it looks it looks like an older building like it looks like

it it it was just really strange and people keep telling me you have to go you have to go you're gonna love it you're gonna love it we stayed for maybe 35 minutes and i was ready to go did you get in your bathing suit i did i got in my bathing suit for 35 minutes is all i love a good i love a dry sauna so i went in there it was fine i did the cold plunge for a second it's just it's very very dark it's old everything is tile it's just then you go we went into this one steam steam room and it was very very dark except for one little light bulb and so i'm kind of squinting to see if there's anybody who else is in there there were about 50 other people in there this is big boys and then all of a sudden this guy out of the darkness goes does anybody mind if i do the water and i'm thinking myself what what does he mean his name is boris and so he goes and he gets this red bucket and he fills it with this fountain that's on the the spigot that's on the side of the wall and then he hurls it into this hole in the wall that is a i don't know a fire oven and the room fills with steam and then there's this weird door and I looked at my sister. I go, I feel like a clown is going to come. It was just terrible. The whole thing was

really scary. What's the place called?

It's called the Schvitz. The Schvitz? Are you cursing at me in Jewish? Again, I know people are texting and a lot of people love it.

It freaked me out.

So you guys, but I can't, I don't get why it seems like a thing that a bunch of old... It was all young people. Fat guys go to. It was all

young people and then a bunch of older men who were sitting, smoking cigars, talking in a language that I didn't know.

See, that's the vibe it gave me. Like, it seems to me like some place that you don't do a girl's night out at. Like, it doesn't seem like a girl's night out.

It's B-Y-O-B. But it's, I mean, you can bring drinks if you want. Naked cold plunge. They might be in today.

First off, the people that do this cold plunge thing, I was talking to Brian Reif about this from Planet Fitness, and he was talking about, you know, what it does for you and stuff. I don't like the idea of shocking my body. You know what I mean? Like, I'm telling you, one day they're going to tell you that you stick your finger in a light socket and you're going to live longer or something.

Wes and my stuff kids are very big cold plungers. We have a cold plunge in our garage, actually.

Oh, you did it for him. Because I remember he wanted it and you were like, I don't know if I'm going to do it.

Yeah. But this was, it was, I don't know.

This is wild.

It was terrifying. I'm still on the naked ladies night.

But it's one of those things where over the years, so many people have said, you need to go. You're going to absolutely love it. And I went and went, I hate this. I am one and done.

It just feels to me like, ugh. You would, you. I would hate it.

You wouldn't even walk in. What's the ugh part though?

The ugh part is the guy, I don't like, like I won't go to the type of health clubs where they have saunas and the guys go in there naked like i just don't not because i'm homophobic guys i'm not homophobic right i just don't want somebody else's privates you know sweating next

to me you know what i mean no i just have a hard time like i'll go into the sauna in a towel with other girls that doesn't bother me it was just this place is haunted there is something there

I would say Bishop State's like a home for people. It may not be like a four-year where you have a dorm, you have a roommate, you have a rec center, but it's still a place you can go meet new people, classmates, people in the hallway, make friends with advisors on all these teachers and everything like that. It's just a place you can feel like yourself and not try to be the thing you don't want to be. With this program, I learned networking a lot. We've had two dinners with heads of different companies, dealing with shipping or even game design builds, dealing with AutoCAD or new 3D modeling. So really being able to meet new people or meet heads of new people has been really helpful. I don't come from a wealthy family, so four years were kind of not out the picture, but less probable for me to go to. Bishop State, with my scholarship, it cut my price in half and made it way easier for me to go to school for the same 12 credits I would go for a four-year.
