We start off the morning with a horrible tragedy that we will discuss after Shannon gives us the latest news on the shooting on campus at Michigan State University. Yeah, the latest update that we

have this morning. Three people are confirmed dead and five others critically injured. We don't know if those are Michigan State students or faculty at this time. The school sent an alert at 8 31 yesterday evening telling students to run, hide, fight with a report of shots fired on campus.

They told us to lay down on the ground so we couldn't be seen. I don't know where everyone is. I don't know where one of my friends are. She's locked in a room in the cafeteria. Now this

The suspected shooter is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was a 43-year-old man not affiliated with Michigan State. Speaking just before 2 a.m. at a news conference, interim Michigan State University President Teresa Woodruff said the university would move to emergency operations for the next two days.

We will take two days where we will move to emergency operation to give ourselves time to think and to grieve and to be together. And this Spartan community, this family, will come back together. There is little else that can be said other than...

We are a community that is knit together by each other, and we will hold each other up in moments of grief as well as celebration. But today we come together as a family, and we grieve together.

Again, three dead, five critically injured, part of Governor Gretchen Whitmer's statement last night. Too many of us scan rooms for exits when we enter them. We plan who that last text or call would go to. We should not. We cannot accept living like this.

We'll have more on this throughout the morning. Actually, we'll continue to make this our focus for you as you're waking up this morning. Again, another shooting. Another turns out to be, what, 67 since January. not 67 in the last 12 months 67 in the last month and a half uh shootings and now hits uh us again close to home uh welcome to the mojo in the morning show we um last night were all of us uh getting ready to go to bed when and when we started getting the alerts and my alerts uh that i was getting was coming from um those that are friends of ours friends of the family uh friends of my son who next year will be on that campus going to school and um them just checking in with us because they wanted an ear somebody that you know or somebody that they thought was in the know i mean i had more parents calling chelsea and myself up last night because they thought because i work and the media that I would know exactly what's going on, where everything was. And honestly, I was as lost as these horribly terrified parents were. And then I made the horrible mistake of listening to that scanner, the police scanner, which total praise to the 911 operators, especially the woman that was doing it because she's just relaying information to officers who, by the way, came in from out of state. Yes. There were police, EMS, FBI, these federal agents and local police law enforcement that heard what was going on and similar to what took place at Oxford High School in our area, they all just raced to the scene Because they knew that a campus police department, along with an East Lansing police department and the Michigan State Police, that they would need help. Especially, you know, knowing that there's going to be a lot of even just traffic issues and then just trying to calm people.

I mean, you just said with 67 mass shootings in this country. I was thinking last night, I was just turning my light off and going to bed when text started coming in to me from people on campus. And we didn't have any information yet. And one of my first thoughts was there are Oxford students who survived a shooting 14 months ago, two weeks ago and one day ago that are now on campus at Michigan State for the second time in 14 months having to deal with this.

Yeah, I actually saw the Free Press has an interview with one of those freshmen, you know, college freshmen. And not to say that there may not even be somebody that may have gone to one of the other schools around the country that there's been a shooting at. Today's the fifth year anniversary of the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas shooting on Valentine's Day, that horrible thing. But it was wild listed in that scanner last night and to hear the law enforcement who you can hear the terror in their voices, you know, as they're they're going building the building, trying to figure out exactly what was was happening. and then to see the alert and read the alert that was sent out at 8 31 p.m. telling students to run hide fight that was with the alert from the michigan state university uh uh you know text and and tweets and everything that was sent out and the alerts that went to the parents and i i turned to chelsea and i looked at her and spike you have you know daughters in college and i've had two sons go through school and are currently in school and i said to chelsea i go I go we're going to get those alerts next year because those alerts are going to come to us with Luke going to school there and then I started thinking about what I would do as a parent and we were talking to one of our very good friends Karen Bolton and we were talking to her and you know trying to calm her about her two sons that go on to go to school they're both of them on campus and thinking like what would we

do as parents and i said to chelsea i go i know this is the bad thing because they don't want you in the area i'd get in the car and immediately try to get try to get up there yeah that was so

scary i had one of my very good girlfriends tammy her daughter goes to state and so she was getting updates thank goodness she got the call right away that she that ainsley was safe but she was getting updates of okay now they're telling us to barricade okay now we're hearing this now you know and and that as a parent just has to be so terrifying to know that your child is right in the middle of what you are looking up at the tv and watching yeah and actually i can't imagine

jannon i can tell you this i i tried to watch the tv to see if they had news the local tv in the even the local tv in lansing had nothing on this yeah and i couldn't listen to the police scanner that was that was the only way that you could you figure out actually you know who you know who the who we ended up turning towards that was giving us updates were like karen's sons Right. Because they were in. Yeah, they were in dorms and they were in apartments and which they were all hearing so many different things as well.

So that was equally as terrifying to be getting updates from the students because, you know, there there was a lot of misinformation happening at the time of there were this many shooters and they and they've all spread out and there are this many dead. I mean, it, it was, it was just, it was awful.

Yeah. It's a, it's a, it's all, as the governor said, this is all too common that you, you, you know, in this day and age that now we, you know, think of the worst that can happen. And this was something that honestly I never had to deal with as a, as a child. The other thing, too, is how crazy is it when we were checking in with some of our friends, kids, and some of Luke's buddies that they were so a matter of fact. The kids become so a matter of fact about this because this has been happening so much. But just to recap, and we will keep you up to date on this one, a shooting on campus at Michigan State University, three fatalities. There are five holding on to life right now at the hospital. Our thoughts, you know, and we always say no thoughts, no prayers, you know, in this. But honestly, I'm praying and I'm praying hard because I can't imagine that that would be one of my children or my spouse. Nerve-wracking, exhausted. Did everything I could not to hop in my truck to get up there.

And what, you have a son or daughter that goes to school there?

My daughter.

And how old is she? What year is she at Michigan State?

Her sophomore year.

Wow. So, you know, here she is. She's trying to get a sense of normalcy because of what COVID did for her, right? And now this happens.

Well, she texted us, and we stayed. You know, we told her to, you know, barricade the doors, turn off the lights, stay low.

Was it hard to get in touch with her? Did you have a difficulty getting in touch with her, or was she in contact right away?

No, she contacted right away. She texted us, let us know that they had an active shooter on the campus. And then she texted us, oh, you know, she texted me that app with the scanner, and I almost lost my mind with that.

Yeah. How terrifying is that alert? Run, hide, fight. Yeah. It feels like it would be absolutely terrifying.

And then the silence afterwards of not knowing what's happening. I mean, when I was getting texts from my daughter on a campus an hour and a half away because she's talking to all her friends on campus, she's looking for more information and there is none to be had. My daughter already knew it about a Grand Valley before any news broke on media in Lansing or Detroit. As people are trying to gather information, that's the most helpless a parent can ever feel. I can't even imagine knowing your child is hiding in their dark dorm room. It's supposed to be about joy and fun.

Ben, your daughter is a sophomore, so she's in a dorm. What dorm is she in?

So, not knowing the campus as well as I'm probably going to have to learn the campus, how close was that to the union and where the shootings took place? Berkeley or Berkey Hall.

Kind of like you with the campus, but what I do know is that she was on, they were on their way to the union to eat, and they decided not to.

Oh, my goodness. Wow. Thank God. Well, are you bringing her home for the next couple of days or next week? Or what are you doing?

Well, she said she's good for now, but we'll see. I don't think I'm going to be good. I might have to take a trip up there.

Yeah. That's the way I own it.

Yeah, it's surreal. uh because you you know we see this on the news and this makes it uh hit me you know more close to home but it makes it also makes me think the other shootings that we've seen in other cities that we cannot make those shootings just be something that we see on the news you know uh and and we have to uh we have to be vigilant with uh with this for the protection of our children You know, I am telling you, Ben, I appreciate you calling. I hope that this gave you a little bit of therapy, just having a conversation with us today. Yeah, it helped. And our, you know, hope is that these kids that are on this campus, you know, Spartans, one of the things about Spartans is, man, they pull together. But the hope is that they can be of comfort to, you know, those family members that just lost a loved one. The thought that there's three right now that are dead and then there's five that are just, they say, critical.

Fighting for their lives, yeah.

Yeah, three people are confirmed dead and at least five others critically injured after a gunman opened fire at Michigan State University last night before turning the gun on himself at a location off campus. The lone suspect, a 43-year-old, not affiliated with the university in any way, opened fire on two separate buildings on campus. This is MSU Interim Deputy Chief Chris Rosman.

So we start tonight by sharing an important update. And that update is the suspect in this incident was located outside of the MSU campus. And it does appear that that suspect has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It is confirmed that he is deceased.

Chief Rosman previously said that to his knowledge, the school had not received any sort of threats in the preceding days.

We are sad to report that there have been three confirmed fatalities. This is in addition to the five victims who were injured and transported to the hospital. Some of those five victims still have life-threatening injuries.

I know there will be another press briefing at 8 o'clock this morning, so we'll have more details for you at that time.

Laura, your son is not only a state trooper, but also a nurse. Is that right?

No, my son is a canine troop in Lansing, and my daughter-in-law is a nurse at Sparrow.

joe oh hi sorry i didn't know you're talking to me um i was in class when this happened i was in the abbott building so just just if you know where that's at it's just right at the end of grand river uh next to the target on grand river so you so you saw the police action quickly going down that street yeah i mean i called one of my friends immediately when i uh when i heard what happened because i i was in class and one of the people logged out and said there was a shooting on campus and that they had to they had to evacuate their building so i was like i didn't i didn't see anything on my uh my timeline on any of the news sources so yeah i immediately called my friend he had no clue what was going on so how did you get the majority of your information because like you i ran it was so throughout my time i've learned that if you go to twitter and you just go to the latest it's like you can instantly find updates it may not always be credible but you can at least find like instant updates that is mostly factual so that's how i

had to get my information because like you i went directly to the news and they weren't covering it for like 45 minutes i was just sitting on twitter trying to see if anybody was talking about it and

i'm sure for you uh because i've heard this from multiple people the the way that they knew something crazy was going on is the like spike said the police sirens and in the immediate call to action that was going on and you being right there by that target i mean you're virtually across the street from everything that's going on at berkey hall in the union yeah so i'm uh i'm in

the military right now and about halfway through my time in the military i got ptsd so i uh my fight or flight like usually kicks in in situations like that i get like really really anxious um during those times and now i mean now i'm still in the military but i'm like labeled as non-deployable

so i just i'm in a non-deployable unit now so so what did you do then if you're you did you just

get as far away from from this as possible i usually like i i'm kind of just like in my own head uh i get really anxious you know people around me i don't really hear people around me i don't really like listen to people around me i'm kind of devising my own escape plan and trying to do whatever i can to get everybody to safety because i like especially when i have no clue

what's going on that's that's the scariest moment and it's an interesting time too this is the other thing that we uh should talk about is when there has been these shootings at schools or or even in you know businesses it's never at night when it happens which makes it even that much more difficult and scary in the situation because it it made it harder for them to be able to to figure out who it was that was doing this um and also to be able to to capture in in this case he ended up killing himself the person that was the shooter so at night it makes it worse and that was the part that i think was uh for a lot of people including first

responders was very difficult that it was taking place at that point but there's less people on

campus at that time that are out and about it's still a lively campus i mean i've gone to michigan state four years now you know i'm a senior it's a lively campus um even during this time of the year i feel like it's there's at least enough crowd to make it really hard to distinguish people

amongst each other at night well that that was the other thing too and you can maybe verify this for But I understand that when the police all kind of got out and about, they were stopping everybody and making everybody go to a...

Yeah, they, like, locked down everything. I mean, even all the way down towards Spartan Stadium, they were locking down all the dorms there. They were just telling people, like, stay inside. Like, it was ghost town for a few hours. I mean, I didn't even leave campus until, like, 2 a.m. I got back from campus at 2 a.m., and now I'm just on the way to work.

Wow. Buddy, I almost wonder if you should take a day. I really do. I know that, obviously, campus is closing down. They say just for two days. I don't know how they're only doing it for two days.

It's funny that you say that, too, because I actually still have class tonight.

Well, I think classes are canceled on Michigan State's campus.

So I tried to confirm that with my class, and as of right now, and obviously this is still subject to change, But as of right now, our professor for one of my classes, they'll say that since it's an all virtual class, it's still it's still possible that it'll be it'll be up for the night.

But I don't know. Yeah. Honestly, I would double check that. I don't think you're having class. But, yeah, Joe, we're thinking of you, man. And I know that this is even tougher for somebody that has the PTSDs and going through the military. But you are a brave guy to be getting up and about today because I'd be crawled up in my bed right now.

Mojo in the Morning. For those just waking up right now, many of you may not even know this. I know that the people that do definitely want the update, a shooting on the campus of Michigan State University last night, and Shannon has the latest on this. And what's the latest, Shannon? Well, this morning, three people are confirmed

dead and five others critically injured. We don't know if those are students or faculty, by the way, at this point. The school sending out an alert at 8.31 p.m. telling students to run, hide fight with a report of shots fired on campus. We saw people start running for their lives and

we immediately knew like something's up like we got to get inside like lock the house down turn off all the lights and just barricade ourselves inside. There's another student. The shooter came in our room and shot three to four times and I'm pretty sure he he hit two uh two students in our

classroom. The suspected shooter is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was a 43-year-old man not affiliated in any way with this school. Speaking earlier this morning at a news conference interim, Michigan State President Teresa Woodruff commenting. We will take two days

where we will move to emergency operation to give ourselves time to think and to grieve and to be together. And this Spartan community, this family will come back together. there is little else that can be said other than we are a community that is knit together by each other and we will hold each other up in moments of grief as well as celebration but today we come to

together as a family and we grieve together again three dead five critically injured and i will have more updates for you in the 7 30 30 is two days enough no i don't i don't believe that it would

be for uh for me if i was a student or even as a parent you know what i mean i agree i'm actually

shocked that right off the bat said we'll grieve for two days and then back to normal maybe they'll

prolong a little bit after they you know yeah i listen i at this point right now um it it kind of makes me uh it makes me sad to see like a a text couple of texts that come in and say uh like this one here y'all are overreacting reacting get back to your regular show um it just shows you that we are desensitized totally desensitized to this one and i don't know if you guys saw this on uh on social or on um twitter last night but it it really was uh truth to me uh when i started uh going through just trying to get information but it was the person that wrote out the the the four scales of where we go uh when we have like a shooting like this it was like a handwritten thing that was trending a bunch of places and it showed it was like uh everybody wants the the news i'm paraphrasing because i don't have it in front of me but it was like get the news um you know figure out if if anything is affecting you thoughts and prayers and then back to normal and that's kind of that's kind of the thing that uh that is happens all too often and um we're gonna not do that we're gonna you know we are gonna do things during the show today that are gonna seem i think oddly out of place and i'm not talking about talking about this i'm talking about doing some of our things like the scams and the stories and uh you know but um but if you don't like it feel free to go to another radio station and uh and and you know figure that out yourself but i think this is way too important and this has hit way too close to home for us to ignore Austin, comment from you. Good. You have a friend that's sister goes to Michigan State?

Yeah. Actually, it's kind of a text last night. I just got wind of it. I just told him, I said, make sure you text your sister and all that. Obviously, they're going to do that no matter what. But he texted me and said the whole family was actually on their way to go get her. You know, the whole, she lives on campus. She's a freshman. I know maybe it might be sad, but let's just talk about it right now. But, you know, they were armed and they were going down there, you know, to protect themselves in the midst of everything. And it was very scary to.

And they were heading down there before they knew that this guy was the lone shooter and took his life?

Yeah. Yeah. It was one of those things where they wanted to get her out, you know, on their terms and, you know, try to get her out as quick as they can and just to maybe avoid something tragic.

I mentioned earlier this morning, Austin, I mentioned that, you know, Chelsea and I were discussing what would we do if this was in a year from now and our son is going to school there and I said we would get in the car and go. And then I got a very nice note from one of our listeners who is actually a an East Lansing police officer and said you wouldn't be able to to to get around that it would be hampering the, you know, the operation. If you did go, you'd have to wait until after the case or after the fact that they knew once I think it was what, like 11 something that they ended up realizing that it was a lone shooter and then they were able to confront him and then he took his life. i think at that point then as a parent i would definitely bring my kid home like your your

friends uh uh did and you know you'd want them to be yeah definitely they're bad does this change anything as you and chelsea are watching this happen knowing that your son's going there this

this next year um you know it's gonna sound bad but my son goes to a high school that's literally down the road from oxford high school and that um that affected me so greatly because um his school went into lockdown and then he had to drive you know home right afterwards because they let him off i i like i feel like i'm being desensitized by all this um because i want him to have normalcy in his life you know what i mean like i want him to have normalcy but This has become the new normal. It could be anywhere. This is crazy.

crazy you know and and i you know i hate to say this but this is this is this is that this keeps happening yeah and i don't care that i just said that and i'm not even going to dump it because i want you to hear it and if you dumped it in toledo and grand rapids i wish you wouldn't have because this is crazy that this just keeps on happening and that we can't um that we can't you know get our act together and now the thing that that bums me out and you know we're all gonna go why did this guy do this thing well there's obvious reasons why he did it this guy was not a normal person this guy was this guy was a sick individual and everybody's gonna look for motives and they're gonna do all that stuff and honestly I don't care what his motives are but I think that this you You know, he completely affected the lives of definitely eight people, eight families by what he did. By killing three of them and by critically, yeah.

The other five.

And I pray that those five, I pray those five come through in there because I just do not want to see another person die. This is just insane. and i i i will say this about you know about uh um you know mike to go back to setting him off to school i wish my kids would live in my freaking basement for the rest of

their lives i texted my girlfriends that last night i want to i want to lock them in a bubble

in my house and when you say it affects those eight families it affects thousands of families because it constantly chips away at your mental health and your anxiety of not being able to protect your own children 24 hours a day.

When you guys woke up this morning, I felt heavy. I'm so sick of feeling heavy coming into this show.

And going back to mental health, that's the other thing, too. I have no idea why this guy did this, but I'm going to tell you this. I guarantee this man had mental health issues. And we ignored that, too. you know and guns is going to be a topic and you know what they should and the interesting thing is they always do it they always bring it up as a topic and people will say we got to control guns and the funny thing is the people who are the most rhetoric of control saying controlling guns never do anything to control guns they bring it up that they're going to do something about this and then you know what ends up happening it falls by the wayside and and it doesn't happen but But mental health is such a big deal, and it's going to get even worse if we don't pull ourselves together and try to figure this thing out. My little cousin, which is on my husband's side, she is a student at Michigan State, and me and my husband were literally just playing in bed, watching a movie, making sure that our three children were finally in bed and sleeping because we have a teenage son who is graduating high school and going off to college next year. And then CNN popped into my phone and said, breaking news, shooting at MSU. And I looked at my husband, and I was like, oh, my God, Hayden, which is his youngest cousin. And I started freaking out. I stayed up literally all night because my nerves would not let me go to sleep. I waited up all night waiting to hear some kind of news if she was okay, if anybody was okay. yeah and this is just ridiculous and they're saying two days for grieving really what student and staff is going to be ready in two days to just act like it's normal

yeah i i'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt she's an interim president but i'm going to say that she just didn't know what to do as far as the two days thing i just can't understand

that either but no um and then i just i while i was sitting waiting and listening you guys uh live where i live in brandon and so when you said something about the oxford shooting that literally hit home for me because we knew tate

from oxford high school yeah tate uh tate was the football player yes

who would be in college right now possibly even at michigan state university you know what i mean i mean i i don't know where i know that he was looking at central is he was looking at going a number of different schools but i knew that somebody mentioned michigan state and i only think about the fact that he should have he should be in college right now well remember michigan

state named him an honorary sparty dog yes yes yes they did and um we were all so grateful for that

that even though like that was one of the colleges that he was looking at and everything else they after he was gone that they did not forget that what he wanted to do within his life they did And they honored him with so much stuff, which is awesome because he was such a great kid. My 16-year-old best friend had the honor of playing football with Tate. And that's how we knew him because I was on every single football team, every single football game. And so.

Listen, I hope this helps you. This is the reason for the texters that said, you know, you guys just need to do your regular show. This is why we don't do our regular show. Because, Becky, I'm believing that you just talking to us is a little bit of comfort for you.

Hi, good morning. Um, I just, um, wanted to share, I mean, my, my daughter goes to MSU and she, um, she says that, um, the acres for, however you say it, um, I got a text from her last night. I went to bed early cause I wasn't feeling well and I felt my phone vibrating. I knew it was ringing and I was trying to ignore it, but I decided not to. And so I picked it up, and I saw my text, and it was my daughter that was actually calling me. But I read the text, and it said, there's an active shooter on campus. I love you. I love you. And I called her back as quick as I could. And thank God she answered. She was terrified.

Yeah.

And I totally talked to her for a little while. She said, Mom, I need your stuff. I have to get off the floor and be quiet.

Yeah, man, I am like living you right now as a parent. I can only imagine that, you know, you're supposed to be her protector. And you're not able to be there with her when this is going on.

It was horrible.

I mean, my daughter's fine. What's horrible is all those innocent young people who are trying to make a way for themselves in this world. it's senseless it's disgusting but I thank God my baby's okay

how soon after the initial text were you able to finally know everything was okay because I can't imagine you couldn't go back to bed at that point

no I I, as soon as I stopped ignoring my phone and picked it up and I saw her text, I called her immediately and she answered, thank God. And so I knew at that point she was okay. And then we couldn't believe that there was nothing on the news. We actually had to, I Googled MSU News. They did actually send us emails too. Well, I wasn't thinking about looking at email. You know, I'm just trying to get in the know right now.

And I think being in Detroit where you are, right, you're in the Detroit area?

No, I'm in Lowell.

Okay, so I think you probably turned out. Okay, so I think that the Detroit.

Grand Rapids, even Toledo News, they're so understaffed right now, the TV stations, and they're also so far from East Lansing that they didn't know what to do, and that's where I – and then the problem is, and I don't know if you did this, but you go on social media, and that's the worst place to go to because, I mean, people were putting – we made some posts, tried to keep some people updated last night, And people were tagging viruses and stuff on you. Did you see that?

It takes minutes for these bots to figure out what people are looking for.

It's just insane.

Well, Bozo, my husband and I, well, I was clicking through trying to find news, and I was on my phone. My husband got a police scanner that one of my other daughters sent the app for. Mind you, I have eight daughters. so um this is this is one of my daughters i the other seven of my daughters were yeah they were on social media yeah they were you know they were doing that and they were contacting me and you know there's just so there was so much misinformation there was you know this you know all you all have discussed that but um yeah it was it was um dawn yeah i uh i thank you for

calling because uh you got us all crying uh this morning to hear what you went through and to know those those families uh right now of the you know victims of this thing i i pray pray pray for for them i don't know how they're going to get comfort at all this is just i don't i don't i don't think there is such a thing um and i don't and and you have eight daughters that's Unbelievable. All I'm thinking about that is, too, can you imagine eight Megans and Shannons and KP's running around?

what is the latest shooting on the campus of Michigan State University. Shannon's got it for us, covering it in the dirty right now.

Three people are confirmed dead this morning, and at least five others critically injured over at Sparrow Hospital after a gunman opened fire last night. The lone suspect, a 43-year-old man not affiliated with the university in any way, opened fire on two separate buildings on campus. This is MSU Interim Deputy Chief Chris Rosman.

We are sad to report that there have been three confirmed fatalities. This is in addition to the five victims who were injured and transported to the hospital. Some of those five victims still have life-threatening injuries.

Here's more from Chief Rossman.

So we start tonight by sharing an important update. And that update is the suspect in this incident was located outside of the MSU campus. And it does appear that that suspect has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It is confirmed that he is deceased.

Andrea Ferguson is a local mom. Her daughter is a survivor of the Oxford High School shooting, and last night found herself in the middle of another active shooter situation.

Well, first of all, our daughter was across campus near where the shooting happened, and she had just ended class and hopped on the bus and went across campus and called me. And about while we were on the phone, all of a sudden she started getting text messages, And it was like reliving Oxford all over again. It was surreal. It was the phone call, the word shooting, shooter. It was surreal. And then we started getting the emails, and that's when we knew that it was serious.

Awful. There will be a press briefing around 8 o'clock this morning, so we'll have some more details for you then.

I was looking on Twitter just a second ago, and to go back to this, you know, gunman that did this, people were taking video of him just walking down the street. It looks like it was the same street that he was walking that was, like, they say, two miles from where he lived when the police, you know, confronted him, and then he killed himself. But I'm looking at this, and these are the people that they said actually were the ones that called the police and said, hey, we see the same person. Because that was the one thing that the campus police did a good job of was getting that picture out of what he looked like. Because he was dressed up in a very distinctive jacket with a distinctive pair of shoes, red shoes, and a hat that he was wearing at that time. And to watch the video of him just strolling down the street Not, you know

I mean, honestly The way he was walking I believe so, yeah It's hard to get into somebody's brain Nicole, what's up?

Hey, thank you, first of all, for, you know, sharing on this topic I'm a mom of an MSU student and um thank god she's okay um like every other parent you know you get that text and then you call them and the part that made me just go cold inside was um talking to her and she was like locked in her dorm room and i was like are you okay and she's like yeah yeah and then she just kind of sighed and she's like mom it's just our turn we've just been drilling for this since kindergarten it's just our turn oh my god and um you know it it just hit that note of desensitization of like she was just sort of resigned like this is this was going to happen to me at some point um and again thank god she's safe and um i my heart's broken for those

families that are directly impacted but um yeah we can't we can't make it that this is just a tornado you know or a tornado drill or any you know that stuff like it can't be that a a a a gun gunman or somebody on campus shooting can't just be that way it cannot be so normalized and and these poor kids i i experienced the same thing uh nicole with you know friends of ours whose kids are there and the kids were actually in the dorm that was right there by berkey hall and they were just hanging out and they're like ah we'll be fine we got the door locked you know

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, and she wasn't like, oh, we'll be fine. I mean, she was just like, it's just our turn.

Yeah.

It was going to happen at some point, and I was like, wow.

and ASAP? I don't know. I can't comment to that. I know, so what had happened was she posted a video of Rocky filming and supporting Rihanna as she was performing at the Super Bowl halftime. And she wrote in text over the video, if I thought he was hot before, this really puts me over the edge. She removed that post due to the backlash, but then she addressed her followers and said, you got it all twisted. It's hot to respect your partner, especially when your partner just did that. So she wasn't saying, oh, he's hot. I want him. She was saying, oh, this makes a man so much more attractive. There he was supporting his girl.

Yeah, those are all Team Jason Sudeikis, though, that are all sending it in going, yeah.

Like, you read the headline, and you're like, ooh, that's weird. But then once you read what she actually posted, it was very nice. Yeah. So, and I don't even like her. What is happening? During a visit to Australia over the weekend, Post Malone denied access to a rooftop bar. Post said they turned him away for his tattoos, and he said, never really experienced anything like this. The venue is called QT Perth. It's a five-star, very fancy hotel, and its dress code prohibits face, neck, and offensive tattoos. Well, the hotel has since apologized for sending post packing. They said, at QT, we aim to welcome everyone and celebrate the uniqueness of each individual. However, on Saturday night, our third-party security did not exercise the appropriate discretion, and we take full responsibility.

responsibility for this. And I'm just finding out about this, and it's kind of funny. This also happened on Saturday night. The Michelob Ultra and Netflix Super Bowl party had a little issue when they ran out of Michelob Ultra with hours left to go in the party. So this was around 10 p.m. bartenders. That's good. Yeah, they were telling people they only had water and pop to serve because they were out of hard liquor and out of Michelob Ultra. Again, it was a Michelob Ultra party. And here's the best part. 30 minutes later, DJ Khaled's performing. They were able to get some liquor into the building. Still weren't able to get any Michelob Ultra. Doing okay. A little bit surreal, as some mentioned. The reason why I wanted to call, after I got that text as far as fight, at the very end of it, it was just, I read it two or three times.

Let's explain that real quick. First off, you're a dad of, it says up here, a daughter that goes to Michigan State. What's your daughter's first name? I'm just going to call her Mary. Okay. Oh, no, that's okay. Yeah, no, I know. But I just want to make sure that we referred her and we know you're Mike and just know that she's in our thoughts this morning. And the text that you're talking about is the text that we talked earlier this morning, which was sent out to all the students, but also the parents are on that.

call list and it was explain what it said um you know i deleted it because i thought it might have been junk but it was to the effect of um you know there's something going down at msu and it was i think run um i don't know run protect and fight or something of that nature yeah so um i'm a divorced dad i have two kids i've got a senior up there and a junior and um my daughter it happened right in front of her building so as i was talking to her i could hear the gunfire and she was just hysterical and she said dad dad dad dad dad she's like they're they're shooting and someone just got killed and she saw a young man just lying there and um she saw them put him in a body bag and um you know being taken out of her senior year in COVID and, you know, the mental struggles that a lot of kids are going through and adults is traumatizing. So they're going to come home today and take a break. Even if it's two days, it'll be longer. Trust me.

So are you staying on the phone with her the whole time that this is going on just to give her comfort?

Yeah. So I'm a divorced dad. So, yeah, I was talking to both of them. So it was my ex. So the majority was my son because he was, you know, in his room by himself.

Your daughter had her roommates with her?

Yeah, yeah. And luckily in their apartment, they have a bar that goes across the front door for security purposes.

Are they in the apartments off of Grand River there?

Yeah, exactly, where all the action is. So I told them, lock your door, put the door down, or lock the door, put the bar down. Stay away from windows. stay away from windows go in your room lock the door go to the bathroom lock your door and just sit tight

so Mike talk about this because we talked to a mom you know a little bit ago she got very emotional did you hear that caller yeah you seem so calm but I'm assuming you were not calm inside when this was going on

you know surprisingly I was and it wasn't for the lack of support love or you know anything other than all my energy just channeled right into you them, you know, just making sure that, you know, they're okay, trying to be calm so they'd be calm. And it really didn't seem real to me, even though I started seeing this. So my daughter turned her phone around and started to show me, and it was just a numbing feeling, that's all I can say.

Well, we're thinking of her, we're thinking of your son, and you know, please know that them coming home is going to be a comfort to them and they're just going to want to probably have the normalcy of you and their mom around.

Yeah, absolutely. And just to hear your last comment, if I could, not to get a political rant, but it's just interesting. The NRA controls the Republican Party and I own a gun and the amendment, I'm all for it. I think it's a mental health issue, but And to wrap our heads around it and try to figure out some things, I don't know. I'm a pessimist right now. I think it's virtually impossible. And if we can, you know, leave it to the lawmakers, I don't think it's ever going to happen. So we can hold our breath. But, you know, my thoughts and prayers are with the MSU kids and parents.

B's son goes to school to Michigan State. And, B, he came home last night.

He did. He came home last night, and I hugged him really tight, and I broke down crying because all I could think is there are families that will not get to hug their child or their loved one again, and I'm just so grateful he's okay, but my heart is broken for those families that are affected, and their entire lives will be forever changed.

We as parents can all put ourselves in those shoes of our, the kids are, they're still our kids, but they're out of our control. We can't protect them at campus. And it's that helpless feeling, just knowing.

It's the worst feeling, yeah.

To know those kids that were sheltered in place and were, like the last caller, witnessing things unfold and not being able to do anything for them. Just so helpless on the other side of a phone.

Yeah, it's awful. and I have a junior in high school and we have a group of football moms and one of the mom's daughter was texted her and she shared the text that there's an active shooter and it's right next to our classroom. We're hiding in a closet. And I mean, all of us just on the edge of our seats, holding our breath, praying for our kids and all these families, nobody should have to experience this.

You should never get a text.

I'm sorry, go ahead.

You should never get a text that says run, hide, fight. You should never get a text like that.

No, you shouldn't. I mean, honestly, the last caller said he didn't want to politicize it, and then there was a caller previously who said that a family went with their guns. To me, guns are the problem. I mean, the number of shootings this year is more than the number of days we've had in the year. And it's, I just can't wrap my head around how, as a country, this is okay. And that, I mean, we had the guy who did the farm in his shoe, and everybody has to take off their shoes, and nothing even went down. And yet we have shootings day in and day out, and nothing has changed.

it's like that onion parody headline that says no way to prevent this says only nation where

this regularly happens exactly exactly it's heartbreaking and i'm praying for all the families and i appreciate you guys getting the time and energy to something that is extremely important and needs the conversation so that we don't get desensitized and on the listener on the

on the radio end we we sometimes feel like useless idiots we don't we can't we feel helpless as the parents do but we we more than anything our role today is to kind of be a community and kind of give people a chance to feel a sense of togetherness yeah i uh i want to continue to take

We got the, well, my brother actually called me and said, hey, I'm going to see the mockdown and our daughter goes there. And she, we got a hold of her. She was fine. She was safe the whole time.

We started our tour in the Union, and Berkey Hall we ended up going to, and then Snyder was one of the dorms that you went to to go look at a mock dorm of where your kids are going to go to. And all I kept thinking of the entire time that I was hearing that scanner last night and hearing the police talk about this stuff is I'm thinking, I know all too well where this is. I can picture where it is because I was just there, and as a parent, what were you doing last night when you heard this after you got that phone call?

And that was the worst thing you could have done, right?

It's horrible, but nobody else had any information, and I'm trying to think, was the Union shooting first, then Berkey, or was Berkey first, then Union? Because I want to know, are they headed towards Abbott and Snyder, or are they headed towards Landon and the other side of campus? And it's you just think of all the people, you know, there and you just want to fill your you don't have any information at that point. And sadly, you know, the kids don't have any information and the news media wasn't ready yet with any information. So we just feel helpless because we can't protect those we love.

And the scanner that I was getting texts from her friends in the dorm, like, hey, somebody's in the hall. And then like all you do is like, please don't let it be my kid.

Yeah. And then misinformation runs rampant, obviously, because everything people are suspect and start the bad information starts spreading and makes people panic even more.

I was gathering some audio for Shannon for these updates, and some of the audio that I was gathering was students that were in a classroom where this guy went into in Berkey Hall, and to know that you're stuck in, you know, one of these classrooms, and then people that, you know, the union, and you know this, Mom, because you've been on campus, but the union is basically the spot where people are just sitting there doing work and homework and hanging out with each other right there in that open area. innocent yeah and there's nowhere to hide except for behind furniture for god's sakes which is not safe no um is your is your uh daughter home with you or will your daughter

stay on campus no we we brought her home and i told her pretty much plan the whole week i'm not taking her back on thursday that's crazy yeah it's stupid i don't understand

i think that will change i think also it's going to change too because the end of the week there's not as many classes, but I, listen, I, I thank you for calling. I, you know, I, I really feel like this is our approach today just to have conversation because we have to, but I also feel like we have to give people like yourself an opportunity just to talk to somebody. Mojo in the Morning. it's interesting i'm following the news but then also following text messages i'm getting from some law enforcement friends that are giving me details about the investigation that's going on right now and they're now learning more about this person that uh that killed himself with a self-inflicted gun shot wound last night and they're going to have an update in just a little bit. Actually, in a few moments, they're going to actually do a press conference. Before they do the press conference, and I might jump into it, let me play for you guys this. This is ABC's Good Morning America covering the shooting on campus at Michigan State, and we'll get the press conference here in just a second.

Overnight horror at Michigan State University after a gunman opened fire at multiple locations.

Oh, hit the wrong button. Sorry about that. Student, faculty, staff, and we have no idea why he came to campus to do this.

The suspect, a 43-year-old male, also dead after an intense, hours-long manhunt. Authorities saying he died from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot.

We're requesting all units to respond to stations, have an active shooter at 509 East Circuit Drive at Berkey Hall and MSU's campus.

The chaos unfolding Monday night around 8-18 p.m. when police say they received multiple 911 calls about a shooting at Berkey Hall. Officials arriving on scene immediately where they discovered several victims, two of them dead.

Sounds like the shooter is currently in the Union Building.

Shortly after, police hearing reports of a second shooting at the nearby MSU Union Building where the shooter allegedly killed his third victim. The FBI among the hundreds of law enforcement officials urgently searching for the gunman who was on the loose for hours. Police releasing these images of the suspect, describing him as a short black male seen here with a mask on. The manhunt coming to an end when authorities located him off campus after midnight, where police say the suspect turned the gun on himself. Oh my God. These 12 students barricading themselves in the library.

This table was already sitting in here, and then we took the tables from outside in the library, and then we moved the shelf to cover the window.

Families desperate to reach their loved ones.

I called my mom, and she was in shock. She was terrified. You know, you never want your kids to call you and say, oh, hey, by the way, the school is under attack. It's getting shot up a block away from me, and I can't guarantee my safety. I mean, the fact that this has been going on for three hours now, and I have to constantly call my mom every 20 minutes to hear crying, hoping I'm okay. It's not okay. It shouldn't happen.

Authorities say five victims were hospitalized in critical condition. Investigators now working to learn more about this gunman and why he would do this.

All right, so that was Good Morning America. We're going to go to a press conference right now that is on campus. at Michigan State University, led by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who is leading that.

Thank you, everybody. Our Spartan community is reeling today. I want to start by thanking law enforcement, including the Michigan State University Police, the Michigan State Police. the FBI, all of our local agencies, first responders, local departments, and officers as far away as Oakland County for their efforts last night. I also want to thank the incredible medical professionals at Sparrow who are working hard to care for those injured, as well as all the community members that shared tips so that our law enforcement could act. We mourn the loss of beautiful souls today and pray for those who are continuing to fight for their lives. Every Spartan student, parent, and staff member should know that Michiganders and Americans everywhere are thinking of you today. President Biden and I spoke last night. He pledged his support and the thoughts of an entire nation. and we will work together to do what is necessary to help MSU community heal. We're all broken by an all-too-familiar feeling, another place that is supposed to be about community and togetherness, shattered by bullets and bloodshed. We know this is a uniquely American problem. Today is the fifth anniversary of the Parkland shooting. We're mere weeks past the Lunar New Year shooting at a dance hall and a few months past a shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde. And looking back at a year marked by shootings at grocery stores, parades, and so many other ordinary, everyday situations, we cannot keep living like this. Our children are scared to go to school. People feel unsafe in their houses of worship or local stores. Too many of us scan rooms for exits when we enter them and many of us have gone through the grim exercise of figuring out who our last call would be to. Last night, a lot of kids on this campus made those calls. They worried for their lives and for their friends, for their fellow Spartans. Parents across Michigan were on pins and needles, calling their kids to tell them that they love them. as parents we tell our kids it's going to be okay we say that all the time but the truth is words are not good enough we must act and we will but today let's hold the msu and east lansing communities close and let's think of the families and friends of those who have lost those fighting for their lives, and the countless Michiganders whose lives are forever changed by yesterday's

shooting. We will get through this together, and we will do it with the full support of the state of Michigan and the U.S. federal government. And with that, I would like to hand this over to our congresswoman, Alyssa Slotkin.

Thanks, Governor. I want to echo what the governor said about the response of law enforcement. Those of you who might have been listening on the scanner, you heard how deeply complex this operation was yesterday with young people calling in tips constantly with just an unbelievably difficult area of environment to navigate. Law enforcement did an incredible job. We had hundreds respond from across the state. and I just I think it's a testament to those who hold the thin blue line for us the ones that hesitate or do not hesitate when we need them and I think we should recognize how desperately needed they were last night in our society in general I want to thank the doctors and nurses and staff at Sparrow Hospital they were on it no one wants to live through a mass shooting like this but they were prepared and they handled it with grace and humanity. As the representative of Oxford, Michigan, I cannot believe that I am here again doing this 15 months later. And I am filled with rage that we have to have another press conference to talk about our children being killed in their schools. And I would say that you either care about protecting kids or you don't. You either care about having an open honest conversation about what is going on in our society or you don't but please don't tell me you care about the safety of children if you're not willing to have a conversation about keeping them safe in a place that should be a sanctuary now the spartan community is incredibly connected and proud we've already seen people come together but for me the most haunting picture of last night was watching the cameras pan through the crowds and seeing a a young person wearing an Oxford Strong sweatshirt, the sweatshirts that were handed out after those kids lived through a school shooting 15 years.

months ago, and we have children in Michigan who are living through their second school shooting in under a year and a half. If this is not a wake-up call to do something, I don't know what is. In the meantime, I feel confident that our law enforcement is doing everything that they can to understand the situation. I'm thrilled that federal law enforcement is on scene bringing their resources to the fight. We're not going to rest until we understand, but I think the fact that we're having this conference so quickly after another mass shooting in our state should be a

on right now in East Lansing after the shooting last night at Michigan State University. City of Lansing. This is the morning that nobody ever wants to have. This is the day that nobody ever wants to be standing up at a lectern when you get elected you want to talk about the great things in your community and not this but here we are I do want to thank the the Lansing residents who who stood up these many many tips you've heard about came in from from many of our residents

and as a result the the shooter was we will uh we'll go back to it here in just a couple of moments but this is a mojo in the morning show we are into our number three of the mojo in the morning show coming in this morning after tragic news of a shooting on campus at Michigan State University I'm going to have Shannon do an update for us and then we will get some more calls we also have some other things to to cover this morning on the on the show as you've probably already heard that we're kind of doing like a modified version of the show and as But Representative Slotkin just said just a few moments ago, it's hard to believe that we are here 15 months later after having done this show, basically, after Oxford High School. And if you miss any portion of the show, we're podcasting it during the show. But one of the things I would like to say is go back to an hour ago, because an hour ago, exactly what Congresswoman Slotkin was talking about. We talked to the parents and the family of those from Oxford High School that literally their kids had to deal with the shooting in their high school. And now they go to college and they think that everything is going to be OK. And the same thing happens again. So let's get an update right now, Shannon, with an update for us.

So just in case you missed it, three people are confirmed dead this morning. Five others literally fighting for their lives at Sparrow Hospital. We don't know if those are Michigan State students or faculty. The school did send an alert at 831 last night telling students to run, hide, fight with a report of shots fired on campus.

Yeah, so I was in class. it was I heard a gunshot right outside in the hallway I was sitting right next to the door and thankfully right when I heard that gunshot I booked it to the far corner of the room and then duck and ducked and covered behind some seats but then right after that gunshot the shooter came in our room and shot three to four times and i'm pretty sure he he hit two uh two students in our classroom this morning the

suspected shooter is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound he was a 43 year old man not affiliated in any way with university speaking not long before 2 a.m at a news conference interim

msu president theresa woodruff we will take two days where we will move to emergency operation to give ourselves time to think and to grieve and to be together. And this Spartan community, this family, will come back together.

We're going to go right now to the press conference because the doctors from Sparrow Hospital are speaking at this moment, and we want to concern ourselves and see how the five who are in critical condition are doing at this moment.

Good morning, everyone. I'm Dr. Denny Martin. I'm the interim president and chief medical officer of Sparrow Hospital, Lansing. I think a lot of very dry mouths up here this morning, so bear with us and appreciate your patience. I can confirm that last evening we cared for five individuals who were brought to Sparrow Hospital from East Lansing campus. The team in our Level 1 Trauma Center with our emergency medicine physicians and trauma surgeons were waiting for them upon their arrival.

I give a lot of thanks to the individuals, the first responders on the scene. Our ability to care for these individuals starts in the field, and they did a fantastic job. Four of those individuals did require surgical intervention to treat their injuries. One individual did not and was taken to the critical care unit after being triaged in the emergency department. All five individuals remained in critical condition this morning. I just want to thank the overwhelming response from our team, everyone in our Level 1 Trauma Center. This is something we talked about this morning that we practice for very often but never want to have to do. And we did it amazingly well. I'm very proud of everyone. The team was led by our emergency department physicians again with our trauma surgeons, but I can't forget we had general surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, neurosurgeons. I'm getting emotional right now. There were so many people that just came in. We received a lot of texts that were just, you know, I'm on my way. Just with people showing up, where do you need me? It was sad, but a very proud night for all of us here. So I can't speak to anything about the identity of the individuals, but I'm sure we'll have some time for questions afterwards. But again, everyone is in critical condition at this time, but actively being cared for by our team at Sparrow. So thank you all.

That was a moment there. There you got the doctor at Sparrow Hospital that is chief of staff at Sparrow Hospital getting emotional as he is discussing the care that went into taking care of and still taking care of the critically injured. And we know that there are five critically injured at Sparrow Hospital at this particular moment.

Again, we don't know if they are students or faculty.

Yeah. Right now, the interim president of the university, Teresa Woodruff, is speaking at this moment during this press conference.

To our students, we have available to you the support that you need at the Hanna Community Center, as was mentioned by Mayor Bacon. This includes counseling and psychological services, as well as employee assistance programs for our faculty and staff. And we're deeply appreciative to the governor for reaching out directly to President Biden and for the offer of additional mental health services for our community. As a university, we also thank our law enforcement colleagues, both here and in multiple jurisdictions, who responded immediately and continue to protect our community today and each day. I want to thank the staff who are on campus today. MSU is on modified operations, which means we're on essential personnel only for today and for tomorrow. And those staff who are here to support our 17,000 students who are on campus and our 50,000 students across this great university, we thank you. I also thank directly our students, faculty, and staff who complied with the request to shelter in place for hours at end without knowing exactly what was happening. We thank you for your courage to maintain that shelter which allowed our law enforcement to take the actions that they did. We ask each of you to honor your feelings and to take care of yourself and each other, and together we will come back more resilient than ever and more ready to face what is needed in this society, which is the courage of all of us to ensure that this never happens again.

Michigan State University in East Lansing last night that has left three dead and five critically injured. Who is this now? Oh, this is the Michigan State campus police chief.

We have family. This is us. This is part of us. These partnerships are great. Our processes will continue with this. We will continuously be joined by our partners as we are here today with the FBI, the state police, as well as Lansing Police Department in East Lansing. And I hate to even go down the list because there's so many agencies that responded last night. continuously responding and asking how can they help. And it was all in a timely manner, very timely with that. You will hear a recap of the incident and as well as some updates based on the events that have occurred overnight in regards to our students that were involved and also the suspect.

Now is the Deputy Assistant Chief.

Deputy Chief Chris Rosman with the Michigan State University Police and Public Safety. As you can tell, this has been a long night for a lot of us. We have been committed from the beginning to being as transparent and getting as much information out as possible. and we're going to continue to do that throughout the day and as this investigation moves forward. I'm going to start with a brief recap of the incident yesterday. This tragic situation unfolded shortly before 8.30 p.m. The first call that we received was from Berkey Hall. Berkey Hall is an academic building on our northern campus at Borders Downtown East Lansing. Initial calls reported shots fired in that building, and there was a absolutely overwhelming police response to that initial call. We had officers in that building within minutes, and in that building they encountered several students who were injured. We can confirm that two of the deceased were in Berkey Hall, along with several of the victims. While the officers were managing that scene at Berkey Hall, we began receiving additional reports of another shooting at the MSU Union Building just to the west of Berkey Hall, right the corner of Abbott and Grand River. Officers redeployed to that location where we did locate one additional victim. We do have three total deceased and five victims at the hospital. We can confirm that all three deceased were msu students we can also confirm at this time that all five of the injured victims at the hospital were also msu students we will release the names of those students later today once we work through some notifications and make sure that the family's aware that we're going to release those names. The suspect in this case was located at approximately 11.35 p.m. in the city of Lansing. The suspect was located by units that were assisting in looking for that suspect after the shootings. The suspect is deceased due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

and we are prepared to release the name of the person who committed these homicides at this time. We have previously confirmed that he was 43 years old. He's a male. His name is Anthony. Last name is McRae, M-C-R-A-E. Anthony Dwayne McRae is a 43-year-old male. We would like to sincerely thank our community for their help.

our quick release of the photograph from the campus security cameras and the help from our community, it was a caller's tip that led law enforcement to that suspect in the city of Lansing. We cannot thank the public and the community and the person who called in that report enough for being observant, for following our messaging, and for being vigilant and contacting us immediately. We will continue to share resources for the MSU community through our institutional website and our MSU police and public safety social media pages. We know that this news may be difficult for those within our campus community and beyond. And it's important to remember that some, it's important to remember that the grief that some individuals may be experiencing is normal. And there are a number of ways in which individuals can seek support, including talking with friends, family, and colleagues to process this and taking advantage of many of the resources that we have provided. We are prepared at this point to take some questions. Sure. Sure. We're gonna turn it over to Special Agent in charge.

While they turn it over to the Special Agent, just to recap, again, you're listening in to Mojo in the Morning Show, and we are covering for you this morning with very heavy hearts the shooting and the tragedy at Michigan State University last night. You just heard Deputy Chief Rosman from the Michigan State Campus Police just give all the details out of the three deceased and the five who are in critical condition. Also told us that all of them, all eight, are Michigan State students, and a lot of people were wondering about that. And then also we know now who the person is that killed them. And we'll continue through the morning, and I ask you guys just to be patient with us, but also to understand that this is the biggest thing that we need to focus on and to try to bring comfort, especially after this morning having conversation with parents and now just recently even getting conversation from some of those that are family members of those that are some of the victims. So please just bear with us, and if you don't like it, then, you know, tough. We'll listen to some of the questions, and I'll come back, and we'll do some other stuff here, but I just want to hear some of the questions that they asked.

I'm prepared to take some questions now. Again, I do have to reiterate.

I don't think that they'll give much. They gave a lot this morning. And what you heard, if you were just tuning in right now, is you heard this all start off with the governor talking about how the president is now involved. They have been giving extra resources to Michigan State. Campus is closed. We talked about this over the morning for the next couple of days. I believe that there will be more closures.

Hold on. Go ahead, right there. Thank you. There was a large police presence on a home on Creston Avenue and East Howe Avenue in Lansing. Was that the suspect's home?

So I can't confirm the actual location or address. We are aware that there was a search warrant executed on a residence that was connected to the suspect in this case. We're not prepared to share that specific location at this point. Do you have any information on the firearm and whether it was registered to then to go to the suspected museum? So at this point, we have no additional information on the actual weapon that was used in the incident. Those are things that we will continue to process and look at today as part of our investigation.

Did you recover the weapon?

We did recover a weapon, yes.

So seven of the eight victims are at Berkeley Hall. The eight, is that the Union? And the Union victim also wanted to pass away? Is that correct?

There were two of the victims from Berkey Hall are deceased, one victim from the union is deceased, there are five additional victims that are at Sparrow Hospital. I cannot confirm where all five of those victims, which building they were in. I believe most of them were from Berkey Hall, but I can't confirm that. I'm going to go right there.

yes i understand the first uh you said officers arrived uh shortly after the 830 call but in the second building what can you describe the timetable of what it took to give to the msu because officers were already within a distance where it's happening yeah the msu union is within

very close proximity to berkey hall it's within walking distance i would describe it as uh less than a block to the west of Berkey Hall. All indications at this point point to the fact that the suspect exited Berkey Hall and walked over to the MSU union. When those calls initially started coming in from the union, we were able to quickly redeploy resources to the union and the suspect actually quickly fled that building. He was not in the building for that long.

So when you say redeployed, how much of a time period was between that?

I can't get into specifics on the time frame right now, but that will be part of the investigation that we'll look at is the time between those two incidents. Right there.

Has the suspect had to be previous in that from the law culture?

So that's part of our investigation today is to look at the suspect, his background, his history. Those are things that are occurring with our state and federal partners right now who have really taken the lead on helping us identify the suspect, especially since that incident did occur off campus but those are things that we're looking at today and those will be integral to the investigation in the back room. Deputy Chief, can you shed any light as to the why? Why this happened? What his motive was? Why did you choose Michigan State? You know, we had the same question last night and we have the same answer this morning. We have absolutely no idea what the motive was at this point. We can confirm that the 43-year-old suspect had no affiliation to the university. He was not a student, faculty, staff, current or previous. So that's an unknown right now. And that's what we're trying to understand is why this incident occurred. I know everybody wants to know what the motive is. We don't have an answer right now. And that's the honest truth.

Good morning, guys. I just wanted to put a, you know, I want to commend the 911 dispatcher. I have heard bits and pieces of the coverage with her giving those instructions out to the responders. And I cannot believe how calm, cool, and collected she was.

She was amazing. I don't know who she is. I hope that they, I hope we will, we actually are going to ask who that is. Because if you were watching, that was the only way that we were getting information was listening to the scanner last night. And this 911 dispatcher, a female, was so calm. There was points where they had first responders in the basement of buildings that could not be heard. She was calm and trying to explain to them, hey, we can't hear you. I need to know what's going on. Then she was calm to say where she was getting calls from. They were getting calls from all over. It turns out that we also get reports that there were crank calls because people were crank calling, and they had to work through that. She was unbelievable. I'm glad you brought her up.

Yeah, because I could not imagine being behind a desk trying to save my team with my hands tied, and all I have is a microphone. Yeah. Oh, gosh. She's amazing.

Do you mind if I, real quick, I'm going to go back to this because they're asking questions of.

all these uh officials and uh there's a question couple questions that are coming in for the um the doctor from the hospital and i think those are important questions injury pattern with the

individuals that were brought to the hospital but the initial reports last evening that the that the injuries were life-threatening was um was correct but there wasn't a consistent nature it was a variety of um injuries associated with the gunshots that came in yeah all right so that

She is not. She is in her apartment with her best friend, but they are very worried because quite a few of their friends were in those halls and they haven't heard from a couple of people.

We're praying. It's tough. You know, as a parent and Spike and I talk about this all the time, we probably talk about so much. It's so funny because I think that it gives us therapy to do this today because we know about our kids and your daughters on your both.

your daughters are in college settings right and we feel the helplessness of letting those kids go and they're living their life on campus and we can't protect them anymore yeah and yeah it's uh

just a moment ago. Yeah, so three Michigan State University students are confirmed dead this morning and at least five other students critically injured at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing after a gunman opened fire at msu last night they told us to lay down on the ground so we couldn't be seen i don't know

where everyone is i don't know where one of my friends are she's locked in a room in the

cafeteria right now so many student accounts of what was happening on campus last night we saw

people start running for their lives and we immediately knew like something's up like we got to get inside like lock the house down turn off all the lights and just barricade ourselves

When officers arrived at Berkey Hall shortly after the first 911 call was placed at 8.18 p.m., they found several people suffering from gunshot injuries, including two of the students who lost their lives. Police then learned of a second shooting scene at the Student Union, which is about a 10-minute walk from Berkey Hall. Officers found multiple people injured at that scene, including another deceased Michigan State student. The lone suspect, a 43-year-old man, had no affiliation with the university. He has been named. I will not name him. Police have yet to establish a motive on why he did this.

There are reports that his dad was calling into the police within the last week for a welfare check on him. So they were talking about, it was interesting last night listening to that scanner thing, because I could not listen to the scanner. But it was interesting listening to that scanner because they were calling out his name on that scanner last night. Yeah. Which the police did bring something up. Chris Rosman brought something up. It was a person, and I believe it was the person that took the video of him walking down the street, that was the one that turned the police on to him that led to his capture last night. So thank God for that. Thank God.

Yeah. In other Dirty this morning, and again, we'll have an update for you in another half an hour on the tragedy at Michigan State. The Kansas City Chiefs rallying to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in Sunday Super Bowl is on track to become the third most watched TV show in history. 113 million people estimated to be watching. Fox said that number does include streaming on Fox and the NFL's digital sites. So I was curious as to what was the number one, and it was the 2015 game between the Patriots and the Seahawks on NBC. That holds the record at 114 million views.

and that doesn't even include streaming.

Did you see Jimmy Kimmel had Mahomes on last night? It was really funny. Yeah, it might be a good comic relief to listen to some of that interview because Mahomes with Jimmy Kimmel is pretty funny.

Drake has filed a motion to get out of his upcoming deposition in the murder trial of rapper XXXTentacion, who was shot and killed in June of 2018 at just 20 years old, if you guys remember that story. On the opening day of the trial, defense attorneys representing the three men accused of murdering the rapper suggested that Drake might be somehow linked to the killing. So he was ordered to appear on Zoom on February 24th to answer some questions. Well, now Drake has filed a motion through his attorney asking the judge to set aside the subpoena for the private deposition. He doesn't want to be on Zoom for a lot of different reasons. And he also said there's nothing to suggest that he has any sort of knowledge about this case, that his name never appeared in the investigative files, and it's unreasonable to ask him to sit for a deposition. It's been kind of a modified show because of everything that has been happening in the news this last, gosh it hasn't even been 24 hours it was 8 30 last night um give you a couple of updates on things that are happening and shannon's gonna have a full update but we now know um the specifics as to how many people are victims of this horrible shooting on the campus at Michigan State University, a total of eight people, three deceased, five in critical condition, all started at 831 last night at Berkey Hall, where the police were first to respond within minutes after getting a call of a gunman they found two deceased several victims injured then the union building there was a shooting there too one killed there also others injured and all eight of those victims in this horrible shooting are michigan state students and shannon in just a little bit just going to have some details from the medical staff on on the conditions of them so we'll have that for you we do know that the the there's a lone gunman there was reports last night that they believed that there were multiple gunmen uh that were on campus it was a lone gunman and uh it was a 43 year old um guy that that did it he lives in east lansing he's originally from trenton New Jersey and he was exactly who they said was the person. They had a picture of him too. They were looking for a short they believe dark complected or black man and they ended up catching this guy or stopping this guy and then he took his life and killed himself about two miles from where his home was. They are at his home right now and they're going through everything. I believe from what the last report was some people said that they

counted like upwards of like 20 or 30 vehicles in front of the house all federal vehicles so it's all now a federal thing this call came in this morning and i i started crying during this call and i think you may get emotional with this but this was a mom calling us up just to discuss what took place hi good morning um i just um wanted to share i mean my my daughter goes to

MSU she um she says that um the acres for however you say it um I got a text from her last night I went to bed early because I wasn't feeling well and I felt my phone vibrating I knew it was ringing and I was trying to ignore it but I decided not to and so um I picked it up and I saw my text and it was my daughter that has that was actually calling me but I read the text and And it said, there's an active shooter on campus. I love you. I love you. And I called her back as quick as I could. And thank God she answered. She was terrified. Yeah. And I totally talked to her for a little while. She said, Mom, I need your stuff. I have to get off the floor and be quiet.

Yeah, it was, man, I am like living you right now as a parent in what you, I can only imagine that, you know, you're supposed to be her protector. And you're not able to be there with her when this is going on.

It was horrible. I mean, my daughter's fine. It was horrible. And all those innocent young people who are trying to make a way for themselves in this world, it's senseless. It's disgusting. But I thank God that my baby's okay. Yeah.

How soon after the initial text were you able to finally know everything was okay? Because I can't imagine you couldn't go back to bed at that point.

No, as soon as I stopped ignoring my phone and picked it up and I saw her text, I called her immediately and she answered, thank God. And so I knew at that point she was okay. Um, and then we, um, we couldn't believe that there was nothing on the news. Um, we actually had to, um, I Googled MSU news. Um, they did actually send us email too, but I wasn't thinking about looking at email. You know, I'm just trying to get in the know right now.

And, um, and I think being in, in Detroit where you are, right. You're in the Detroit area.

Okay, so I think you probably turned out. Grand Rapids. Okay, so I think that the Detroit, Grand Rapids, even Toledo News, they're so understaffed right now, the TV stations, and they're also so far from East Lansing that they didn't know what to do. And that's where I – and then the problem is, and I don't know if you did this, but you go on social media and that's the worst place to go to because, I mean, People were putting – we made some posts, tried to keep some people updated last night, and people were tagging viruses and stuff on. Did you see that? It takes minutes for these bots to figure out what people are looking for. It's just insane, but –

My husband got a police scanner that one of my other daughters sent the app for. mind you i have i have eight daughters so um this is this is one of my daughters i the other seven of my daughters were yeah they were on social media yeah they were you know they were doing that and they were contacting me and you know there's just so there was so much misinformation there was you know three shooters and this you know i'll i'm sorry you all have discussed that

We're laying in bed when this happened, and we asked Luke to—we called Luke to tell him what was going on because Luke actually didn't know what was happening. And to think that this can happen anywhere, because if it can happen here, it can happen anywhere, right? And to think that in regards to some of these parents, like the dad that called us this morning, whose daughter's apartment was right across the street from where the gunfire was going off, and the daughter was FaceTiming her dad saying, I can see a dead body sitting there. And then to see the body bags, you know, of this and to think that that could be us as parents comforting our child and talking to them.

Terrific.

I can't believe it. You know what I mean? And it's our baby and it's all these people's babies and it's just horrible. So, yeah.

I got a letter from the school district that Lucy and Smith go to, and my girlfriends and I were texting this morning to say how sad it is that it's a form letter now. It's not even a letter that they have to write each time this happens. It's a form letter that they send out and just change the school name at the beginning of the letter.

Guns are the leading cause of death for children and teenagers. Not car crashes, not drug overdoses, not disease. It's guns.

Can I tell you, when we went to a commercial break earlier this morning, my daughter called before she went to school, and I didn't explain to her what was going on or anything, but they had no idea. She's just waking up, going to a Valentine's Day party. That's what she's excited about today. What am I supposed to send her to? You know what I mean? After she's done with elementary school and she gets to your kids' mojo in Spike's ages, how am I going to feel comfortable sending her out? I don't feel comfortable now. Yeah.

I don't know. I do not know. And I think that the one dad that said this morning that we got to take this, you got to take this out of politicians' hands and put it into our hands. It's got to be in our hands. It cannot be in a politician's hands because they will tell you they're going to do something about it, but they don't do anything about it. you know, they'll tell you that they care and they'll tell you that they're fighting this, but then they don't do it. People have to, you know, we have to be the ones that take this into our hands to stop this from happening. All right, we're going to get you caught up on the latest of what we've learned this morning and within the last hour, there's been a press conference that has led to us now knowing who the shooter was, also now knowing exactly the condition of those that are in the hospital right now at Sparrow Hospital in East Lansing. Shannon with an update for us on the tragedy at Michigan State University.

Yeah, there are eight victims, three deceased, five in critical care this morning, all confirmed to be MSU students. This is Sparrow Hospital Chief Medical Officer Denny Martin talking about receiving the five critically injured students last night.

Four of those individuals did require surgical intervention to treat their injuries. One individual did not and was taken to the critical care unit after being triaged in the emergency department. All five individuals remained in critical.

condition this morning um i just i want to thank the overwhelming uh response from our our team um everyone uh in our level one trauma center this is you know something we talked about this morning that we uh that we practice for um very often but never want to have to do um and we We did it amazingly well. I'm very proud of everyone. The team was led by our emergency department physicians, again, with our trauma surgeons. But I can't forget we had general surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, neurosurgeons.

When you see a doctor cry like that, so many people that just came in, we received a lot

of texts that were just, you know, I'm on my way, just where then people showing up, where do you need me? It was sad, but a very proud night for all of us here.

The lone suspect was a 43-year-old man. Police named him, we will not name him, but he had no known affiliation with the university. He was located in Lansing at around 1135 last night, thanks to a tip call from a local citizen. That person is a hero, man. Andrea Ferguson is a local mom. Her daughter is a survivor of the Oxford High School shooting that happened just 15 months ago. And last night found herself in the middle of another active shooter situation.

Well, first of all, our daughter was across campus near where the shooting happened. And she had just ended class and hopped on a bus and went across campus and called me. And about while we were on the phone, all of a sudden, she started getting text messages. And it was like reliving Oxford all over again. It was surreal. It was the phone call, the word shooting, shooter. It was surreal. And then we started getting the e-mails, and that's when we knew that it was serious.

Can you imagine 15 months ago you dealt with this, and now you're dealing with it all over again?

It's a surreal experience to be honest with you. I never expected in my lifetime to have to experience two school shootings. And there's several kids there that our daughter's friends with that are going through the same thing.

So it's very overwhelming. The president of the university said something that I thought was really awesome, that they told the kids to be vigilant and they told the kids to take cover, but the kids took it upon themselves to help others that were trying to to be vigilant and take cover you know like the kids that that were going through an emotional time like there were just random kids that were walking up and down grand river yesterday um during this whole you know time between 8 30 and you know 10 30 and they were just helping their fellow spartans out i mean And I hate to see our kids go through this, but I also know that our kids are so damn tough, man. They're tougher than us as parents.

That's the thing. They're so hardened to – my daughter's first text me last night wasn't I'm scared at her college. It was I'm worried about blank and blank, her friends. And it's just after 15 years of evacuation and lockdown drills and Alice training and all the scary, tough conversations we have after every time this happens. and yet our country allows this to happen again and again and our kids have become desensitized not desensitized but our kids have it's the usual but here's the thing

though our kids though still have compassion in their hearts for others which is something we need to talk about too besides the fact that they're hardened for this it's the fact that these kids are compassionate human beings and they don't get enough credit for that they're being told you know they all they do is you hear all the bad things about things that happen and then when you see what took place yesterday and you see these kids coming together for their friends and you sit there and you go man these parents raised their kids right you know that that that are there on campus yeah yeah

And at the table next to us, all I could hear the entire meal was this kid's iPad blaring some kid's show like Bluey or Paw Patrol or something like that on it. I mean, it was so loud. And you guys know that iPads typically don't ever sound like that loud, but it was so loud that I could hear the dialogue of the show that was on. Good show. That this kid was, yes. Bluey's a great show.

Okay, so this kid was not loving it either because this kid had nothing, you know, no excitement level when he was watching this thing. Then this kid, so this kid's out with his mom and his dad while I am out with my wife and there's countless tables out with no other children in the entire restaurant. This kid gets up and starts running around the restaurant. And this is where it got really weird. And if you're a server, I want to know what your thoughts are on this one. If you work in a restaurant, tell us what your thoughts are on this. The kids running around while the parents are still sitting at the table and the parents are letting the kid kind of like play games like doing like Ring Around the Rosie around their table. Only to have one of the waitresses carrying a tray full of what looked like five, you know, plates full of food. Just barrel this son of a bitch over

And so we, nobody cared. Pause, packed a business.

Nobody gave a rat's ass about this little kid that had been just bothering them. It was almost kind of like people felt like we were justified in that. And the waitress didn't even stop. And nobody from the restaurant came over to see if the kid was okay. Because I think the restaurant was so fed up with the fact that this kid was doing this, was causing this.

And really, in this case, it's F those parents. Yeah. Right. Because I had the same thing happen Sunday morning. We're out to breakfast in the booth next to us. They had the device so loud that I couldn't hear my daughter talking to me. I kept asking her, what are you talking about? What is that? What class? And then by the end, I made a joke like, well, we can't leave yet. I paid the bill, but I'm like, we can't leave. I have to see how the show ends that she's watching because I've been listening to it for a half hour.

It was, Spike, it was so loud. I don't know what was louder. The kid's iPad or when the kid's head thudded against the ground.

I don't know how. I get so much anxiety in those situations. I don't know how it even gets to that level of being that out of control.

The only time the mom paid attention, in my case, was when she was mad because the child somehow logged her out of something.

You logged me out. Now I've got to log you back in. I was going to say, there's something wrong with that kid because when my kids have an iPad in front of them,

a tornado could go through the building.

And they are still going to play Minecraft.

So there is a restaurant that's getting a lot of crap. It came out in the news yesterday You might have seen it The restaurant's getting crap for the fact that They have some nice Italian place On the east coast They have now said that you cannot Bring a child Under the age of 10 years old to the restaurant

They have banned little kids

Guess what, you're doing it for the kids That's so unsafe You could have spilled a hot Italian dish or soup on that child And it would have been the child's fault But guess who would be suing the restaurant

And they're going to the lengths of They will turn you away If you do try to bring somebody That looks like they're I don't know if they're going to card the kids

It's their restaurant, their rules

But they're also, one of the things that they're going to do Is they're not going to offer any kind of child fair food Like, you know, food that they, you know Will be something good for them

I've said it before, man There are kids-only places There needs to be kids-never places Like, it's gotta happen

You just said that's the solution If they remove all the kids' meals from the menu, at least that's going to cut down. Because if you have little kids, you're not going to take them to a place where the kid's not going to like anything. Unless they're spaghetti.

What I honestly thought is I thought that the restaurant should just charge a cover for the kid, and the cover should be like $800 or something like that.

And it's a tip for the server that has to deal with it.

See, I don't think changing the food is going to change it. Because when you change the food, those same parents are the parents that order their kids a rack of ribs and then expect you to charge them a kid's meal price. Right.

I actually hated it because those people would suck down their Sprite and then I'd have to visit their table every five seconds. Nothing against kids. Hi, I work at a children's restaurant. I'm not going to say where I work, but I deal with kids all the time, and they're always constantly running around. And their iPads are always loud. I love my own kids, but everybody else's I don't really like. I have four myself and I love them. Don't get me wrong.

It's tiring, but you know what? This is what we try to do to give you details about what's happening. Last night, The shooting that took place on campus at Michigan State University has affected eight families with three families losing the life of the young man or woman that they love, the young student from Michigan State, and the other five, those clinging to life right now. We learned more about what's going on, and I'll play for you in just a couple of minutes an update from the Michigan State Police, the University Police, because we got more details. Here were some of the students last night speaking about what was going on while it was going on, and many of them turned to the media that was there for help, including I was watching that Brett Kast from Channel 7, WXYZ, was giving kids rides in their station vehicle. How cool was that?

They told us to lay down on the ground so we couldn't be seen. I don't know where everyone is. I don't know where one of my friends are. She's locked in a room in the cafeteria right now.

Yeah. We saw people start running for their lives, and we immediately knew, like, something's up. Like, we got to get inside, like, lock the house down, turn off all the lights, and just barricade ourselves inside.

Here's one student that was actually in Berkey Hall, which, by the way, two of the deceased were from Berkey Hall and several of the injured were there, was in a classroom with a gunman shooting.

The shooter came in our room and shot three to four times, and I'm pretty sure he hit two students in our classroom.

The other people that we have to throw a shout-out to and say they've done a great job, the law enforcement and the EMS that were there, did you see how many police and EMS vehicles were on campus waiting to help out those? You know, in chief, assistant chief Chris Rosman gave us detail this morning during a press conference on what exactly, you know, he knows up until this point. And it's not going to play because of guess what we're getting. We're getting that horrible wheel right now on our. Well, oh, here you go.

PM. The first call that we received was from Berkey Hall. Berkey Hall is an academic building on our northern campus that borders downtown East Lansing. Initial calls reported shots fired in that building and there was a absolutely overwhelming police response to that initial call.

We had officers in that building within minutes, and in that building, they encountered several students who were injured. We can confirm that two of the deceased were in Berkey Hall, along with several of the victims. While the officers were managing that scene at Berkey Hall, we began receiving additional reports of another shooting at the MSU Union Building, just to the west of Berkey Hall, right on the corner of Abbott and Grand River. Officers redeployed to that location, where we did locate one additional victim. We do have three total deceased and five victims at the hospital. We can confirm that all three deceased were MSU students. We can also confirm at this time that all five of the injured victims at the hospital were also MSU students. We will release the names of those students later today once we work through some notifications and make sure that the family is aware that we're going to release those names. The suspect in this case was located at approximately 11.35 p.m. in the City of Lansing. The suspect was located by units that were assisting in looking for that suspect after the shootings. The suspect is deceased due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and we are prepared to release the name of the person who committed these homicides at this time. We have previously confirmed that he was 43 years old, he's a male. His name is Anthony, last name is McRae, M-C-R-A-E, Anthony Dwayne McRae is a 43-year-old male. We would like to sincerely thank our community for their help. Because of our quick release of the photograph from the campus security cameras and the help from our community it was a caller's tip that led law enforcement to that suspect in the city of

lansing that's amazing that uh quick thinking and somebody that actually did call otherwise we wouldn't know uh who it was and the person could he potentially could have gotten away um i'm gonna uh tell you a couple other stories that are crazy did you hear the story about the United Airlines jet that in December, and we're just learning about it now, had an incident take place as it was taken off from Hawaii, where the jet came as close as 750 feet from hitting the ocean.

God, that is nuts. Holy cow.

So, a United Airlines passenger jet carrying, you know, a plane load of passengers, a Boeing 777, actually took off in some pretty bad weather when the plane ended up losing a little bit of its control and the pilots had to try to regroup to get the plane to not crash into the ocean. Let me play for you some of the audio from that. which is crazy. Anybody have a flight here soon? You're not going to want to listen to this.

I hate hearing these things because I remember the story of them encountering weather, but when you see the data afterwards and realize just how serious it was.

I never knew the story until yesterday. This is wild.

Only because they had a few people injured, but we see those stories once a month of some severe injuries by turbulence. Now, you don't realize, oh, my gosh, the whole plane was knocked out of the air, and thank God the pilots recovered it.

It's one of those things where you start counting their blessings. as you start asking yourself, is this the last time you're going to see your family? What did pilots tell the passengers? They got on the intercom and simply said, well, ladies and gentlemen, you probably felt a couple of G's on that one and everything's going to be fine. It's going to be okay.

None of those passengers knew, though, that they were within 750 feet of actually crashing into the ocean. The White House says that that fighter jet that was deployed to shoot down the unidentified object over Michigan.

Missed the first time and ended up hitting it on the second missile that they shot off. What happens to the missile that misses? Does it go right into Lake Huron? Good question. It was crazy. And they're confirming, by the way, they're saying that it's not in a UFO. So they did not shoot down a UFO. This is the press secretary speaking. If I can play it. Hold on. Oh, I have the wrong thing.

And one last thing before I turn it over to the Admiral, I just wanted to make sure we address this from the White House. I know there have been questions and concerns about this, but there is no, again, no indication of aliens or extraterrestrial activity with these recent takedowns. The problem is after being criticized for not shooting that first balloon down, then this weekend they went trigger happy crazy shooting everything down, but the one in Canada, they blasted to pieces. They don't think they can recover much of it. And then this one over Lake Huron, they think is deep at the bottom of the lake. And they're saying it might be difficult to recover that. So we might never get answers on what these things were.

And I want to end on this story because I think this story is so important. and nobody is talking about it. It has not been on any media at all. The concerns over that train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, where the train derailment has caused for toxic chemicals to pretty much take over most of the town, including engulf the city with black smoke. Remember, this story came out like a week ago, and I think we even talked about it.

Yeah, it was longer than that. Was it? About two weeks.

Has it been a couple weeks? Yeah. They're saying that there are dead fish, dead chickens. There's, like, cars that have just, like, basically started on fire because of these chemicals. And they're saying that there's so much hazardous chemicals that have been in the air because of this whole thing. And they say nobody cares about them in East Palestine, Ohio.

Well, here's the problem. It's the biggest chemical spill in the United States' history. And to me, that is crazy.

And how has that not been covered, though?

It's crazy to me. So one of the biggest chemicals released was vinyl chloride. And when that is put out into the atmosphere, it reacts with sunlight. And it actually turns it into this really, really harsh acid and formaldehyde and a whole bunch of other stuff. And then it's super hard to clean up. And breathing or drinking that can cause a number of health risks like dizziness, headaches. But they're thinking long-term liver damage. It's Aaron Brockovich. It's Aaron Brockovich. It is Aaron Brockovich.

But people are going to have to leave their homes forever. The chemical, the long-term effects of this, I mean, this is so much farming area around this that it's going to be forever affected. And if it only happened a few miles down the railroad, Pittsburgh, downtown, would be burning right now.

But everybody's thinking because, you know, the media, I don't know if it's because there's only 5,000 people in this town, they're not realizing what a big story this is.

This happened at 9 p.m. on Friday, February 3rd. So now we're the 14th. And the media coverage that this thing has gotten has been less than about an hour worth of coverage on outside outlets other than Ohio news media. It's crazy. Less than an hour on the national. The national news doesn't even talk about this anymore.

Poor farmers. And nobody cares about them because the company doesn't want to pay them out and be responsible.

The company at this point won't even pay for the health monitoring to check the air and all that stuff. The government's doing it right now, but the residents are suing because they said the government will come in and check, and then they'll go, okay, we'll come back and check in six months.
