It's Mojo in the Morning Show. So Lydia is who answers your phones. She actually calls you, too, if you text and asks you to go on the radio with us. I'm going to bring her in for a topic here next. Did you guys hear about Lydia's little, like, having to hide her boyfriend from her dad's story? Uh-oh. Uh-uh.

00:02:38 - 00:02:57 | Speaker 3:

Spill. Yeah, so I have a boyfriend, as some of you might know. And my dad has no idea So I'm Chaldean, an Iraqi Catholic And my dad would probably go crazy If he found out that I'm dating Even though I'm 25 But I'm still daddy's little girl

00:02:57 - 00:03:05 | Speaker 7:

Yeah, when you're Chaldean You are basically supposed to go from Being daddy's little girl No matter what your age is To married, right?

00:03:05 - 00:03:05 | Speaker 3:

Right

00:03:05 - 00:03:08 | Speaker 7:

Never the boyfriend part comes into play

00:03:08 - 00:03:12 | Speaker 3:

It's like the promise for two weeks The engagement And then a year later you're married And you're like, holy cow

00:03:12 - 00:03:16 | Speaker 4:

Your mom knows about your boyfriend, right? Yeah, she knows.

00:03:17 - 00:04:12 | Speaker 3:

And some of my family does, too, because they listen to the show. But for those who don't know, please don't tell my dad. Yesterday, a gas station guy was kind enough to drop me off some food. And as he was pulling up in the driveway, my dad was also pulling down the street to come home from work. And he noticed. He was like, I think your dad's coming home. Like, come outside. Come outside. Grab it. And I was like, no, no, just drive away. So he backed out, parked down the street from my house, watched my dad come into my house, close the garage. He ran up the driveway, dropped the food off, got in his car and dipped because he was so terrified of my dad seeing him come to our house. And usually when he picks me up on dates, I try to exit out the front door because if I open the garage, he can see through the door that someone's picking me up. So I just try to make it nonchalant as if no one's picking me up and hoping he never notices.

00:04:12 - 00:04:16 | Speaker 5:

What do you think your dad would do if he saw that you were dating this guy?

00:04:16 - 00:04:29 | Speaker 3:

I don't know. I feel like I could maybe get in trouble or he would be reasonable about it. Like my dad's a really reasonable guy. But it's just the thought of, you know, him feeling hurt that I'm hiding something from him. Right. That would probably bother him.

00:04:29 - 00:04:45 | Speaker 4:

Could you say, oh, this is my friend. You know, I don't even know his. Well, yes, I do know his real name. But like this is my friend gas station guy. Would your dad believe that? No. This is my friend, gas station guy. Well, I don't want to say his real name. Red flag. Would he believe you or would he know right away?

00:04:45 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 3:

He would not believe me. No, he would definitely know. And there was one time, actually, like I was driving to church with my dad and gas station guy called me and his real name popped up on the screen. And I was immediately hitting decline on my car play really fast. And then he called me again because I think he thought.

00:05:00 - 00:05:10 | Speaker 4:

the call didn't go through and my dad just looked at me he gave me like the stare down of like oh i think something's happening here and ever since that day he has not said anything about it all

00:05:10 - 00:05:41 | Speaker 3:

right so i know i have a couple of things that first off i want to ask listeners to call up and tell us about you know for those that had to hide their boyfriend or girlfriend how did you hide you know the person from the the the parent um 844 mojo live 844-665-6548 or text 95500 You should have just had gas station guy Which is what you call your boyfriend You should have had him Pretend he was like An Uber Eats driver

00:05:41 - 00:05:44 | Speaker 7:

He could have like

00:05:44 - 00:05:51 | Speaker 3:

Done that whole thing and been like Yeah how you doing just dropping it off You know what I mean and like play it off like that's the case

00:05:51 - 00:05:53 | Speaker 4:

That's amazing That's a really good idea

00:05:53 - 00:06:07 | Speaker 3:

Your dad by the way is the sweetest guy But this is no joke And it's not saying anything bad about your dad Because he is a good looking man He's very intimidating And seems like the type He reminds me of the Chaldean version of Tony Soprano

00:06:07 - 00:06:09 | Speaker 6:

Yeah Like he reminds me

00:06:09 - 00:06:30 | Speaker 3:

He's a bigger guy Like he's got muscles and stuff Because you know he works with you know Machinery and cars and things like that And honestly If I were to be a gas station guy I would think I'm going to be killed Put out in the middle of somewhere You know that I don't know Like I would probably end up thinking that he would take me back to Iraq and bury me in the desert somewhere.

00:06:31 - 00:06:36 | Speaker 2:

So don't you feel like waiting and pushing this off is going to only make it worse when he actually does meet him?

00:06:36 - 00:06:41 | Speaker 4:

I'm pushing off any boyfriends I have until I know that I found the one. Like, I'm ready to get married.

00:06:41 - 00:07:04 | Speaker 1:

That's what's so crazy to me, and this is a question I've always had for our Chaldean friends and our Chaldean listeners. And truly, the process is the promise, the engagement, the wedding. So when you bring him home and say, Okay, this is gas station guy We're promising each other That we're going to get married Your dad just is like Oh, you met him yesterday And now Like they have to know

00:07:04 - 00:07:14 | Speaker 3:

No, that's kind of their thing They kind of don't even think about it They don't want to know They don't get into it Like all our friends And people that we've known over the years It's kind of like the dads just don't It's the un

00:07:14 - 00:07:16 | Speaker 1:

They turn a blind eye to it

00:07:16 - 00:07:19 | Speaker 3:

It's the unasked, unanswered question That nobody ever says

00:07:19 - 00:07:21 | Speaker 1:

So Lydia, how long do you date somebody

00:07:21 - 00:07:35 | Speaker 4:

Before you get promised to each other? The average for Chaldeans is usually like three years, I want to say. Oh, that's a long time. Okay. Yeah, about three years. But for me, I'm waiting a really long time until I figure out that that's my one.

00:07:35 - 00:07:36 | Speaker 3:

Erica?

00:07:37 - 00:07:38 | Speaker 4:

Yes.

00:07:38 - 00:07:44 | Speaker 3:

How you doing, Erica? We're talking about how Lydia from our show here had to hide her boyfriend from her dad.

00:07:46 - 00:08:06 | Speaker 6:

I used to have to hide my boyfriend from my parents at 16. I used to say it was going to my best friend's house, my cousin's house. I would literally ride a bike like three to four miles just to go see him and then I ended up pregnant oh boy there was no more hiding him anymore yeah can't hide that um thank you for

00:08:06 - 00:08:14 | Speaker 3:

the call Stephanie yes good morning good morning this is amazing you guys Stephanie tell your story

00:08:14 - 00:08:39 | Speaker 5:

about hiding your guy so i miss my fiance now um but for about four years i hid him from my dad my mom knew about it i'm actually middle eastern and i hid him for about four years i actually like you literally i introduced him actually as a friend to my family and my dad knew better of course but i mean we're very engaged now but i had to hide him for a very very long time so what

00:08:39 - 00:08:46 | Speaker 3:

What were the almost near misses? Like, give us an example of what was almost a dad almost caught us.

00:08:47 - 00:09:22 | Speaker 5:

Oh, my goodness. So when we'd be outside, so we went to high school together. When we'd be outside in front of the getting, I was waiting to get picked up from school. And we'd be hugged up on each other. And there was a moment there where he actually pulled around the corner. And I had no idea that he was pulling around the corner and had almost seen us. Very, very scared, very worried about it. And then I introduced him as a friend To my dad And of course he knew better But yeah I mean later on I had to let him know That this was my boyfriend This is who I wanted to be with And he finally accepted it

00:09:22 - 00:09:26 | Speaker 3:

Yeah and he's like I recognize that guy You know

00:09:26 - 00:09:35 | Speaker 2:

I wonder if dad secretly know Like they know They just don't want to accept the fact that it's happening They'd rather pretend like they don't know

00:09:35 - 00:10:00 | Speaker 3:

I'm telling you I have wanted to ask that question, Mike, to a number of our babysitter's father, but he also scares me, too. Why is it that Chaldean dads always, and except for the guys that are my age, the guys my age seem like pushovers, like the buddies of mine, like Scotty and stuff like that, you know, that are, but the guys that are, you know, like your dad.

00:10:00 - 00:10:03 | Speaker 1:

Dad's age, your dad's generation, they don't play.

00:10:03 - 00:10:09 | Speaker 3:

It's the way they walk. Like, my dad, like, carries his broad shoulders with the left to the right walk like he's in a mafia.

00:10:11 - 00:10:30 | Speaker 1:

It's honestly, like, I look at them and I go, they were probably friends with Saddam Hussein or something like that. Like, you know, like, I sit there and go, I go, man, this guy could, you know, who knows what could happen here. What's going on, Hana? Hi. How are you? Good. Hana actually experiences this, but she's not Chaldean. and she's actually Albanian, right?

00:10:31 - 00:11:07 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, and it's just as bad. You know, I dated my boyfriend for four years, and my parents didn't know about him or my brother because I was just as afraid of my brother as I was my dad. So where would you say you were going if you were going to meet your boyfriend? I told my sisters. Like, they were married, so, like, I was like, oh, I'm going to hang out with them. And, you know, my sisters would all obviously have a story for my parents if they called. And so I was—we were wanting to get engaged, So imagine I told my dad about my boyfriend, and I'm like, well, we're engaged. So that's how they want to know. Like, they don't want to know that you have a boyfriend. They just want you to get married. It can magically happen.

00:11:07 - 00:11:24 | Speaker 1:

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Which is honestly the way that every person wishes it was. I like it. I genuinely like the idea of that. I've always said to myself that I wish I was born into a culture that could just do arranged marriages because dating would suck. You know, it's like who would want to do dating?

00:11:24 - 00:11:37 | Speaker 4:

People ask for our hands in marriage all the time Like random And I'm like really like in this day and age And you know my dad never forced us to do anything like that But he would always ask us are you interested And we're like no not at all Like no no no

00:11:37 - 00:11:44 | Speaker 1:

Olivia you experienced something like Lydia experienced Olivia

00:11:44 - 00:11:51 | Speaker 3:

Yeah hi What's up I had to hide my boyfriend from my dad for years

00:11:51 - 00:11:55 | Speaker 1:

And how would you do that Was your boyfriend, like, in your closet or something?

00:11:56 - 00:13:03 | Speaker 3:

No. So I would just tell him, like, I was hanging out with friends all the time. Or I would, like, my mom knew. But, like, I would tell him, like, oh, like, I'm going to go hang out with some friends. And he's like, okay. Or, like, I was in college at the time. So anytime I came home, because my boyfriend lived where, or my, no, he's my ex. But my boyfriend would live, he lived, like, 15 minutes from my house. So anytime I would come home and I want to hang out with him, I would have to tell my dad, oh, I'm going to hang out with my friend. like jessica or like because i don't have any sisters so like i couldn't say well i'm gonna go hang out with my brother and then try to hide it like that well one day i wanted to go hang out with my boyfriend he was like having a bonfire and my dad wouldn't let me go anywhere he's like no stay home stay home and i was like no like i want to go so bluntly told him i was like well i'm i have a boyfriend he's like how long have you been seeing him and i was like oh like three months and so my boyfriend pulled up i had to pull up and meet my dad so that i can go to this bonfire and it was awkward it was funny he pulled up with two of his friends and it was just

00:13:03 - 00:13:21 | Speaker 1:

yeah the funny thing is when dad has seen that guy and you tell him three months and he realizes that you're lying then he never believes a word out of your mouth really he never believes a word out of your mouth ever again after that. And you married that guy, right?

00:13:22 - 00:13:32 | Speaker 3:

No, I actually dated him for another year, and then that's the only guy my dad has ever met. I'm now single. Me and him don't date anymore, but it was just the first guy my dad ever met.

00:13:33 - 00:13:39 | Speaker 1:

Yeah. Which line did you want me to pick up, Shannon? Two. Line two. Janae?

00:13:40 - 00:13:43 | Speaker 2:

Hi. It's like my fourth call this month, yay.

00:13:43 - 00:13:55 | Speaker 1:

This month? Wow. Good for you. Hold on. Wait, no, no, no. Hold on, hold on, hold on real quick. I got to do your punch card. By the way, if you get four more cards, you get a free Diet Coke.

00:13:56 - 00:13:58 | Speaker 2:

Oh, my God. And I love it.

00:13:58 - 00:13:59 | Speaker 1:

Go ahead. What's going on?

00:14:00 - 00:14:59 | Speaker 2:

So my dad is the no-nonsense dad. He's the typical black dad when it comes to his only daughter. And I'm the baby. And, you know, he's the dad that's like, you know, whatever you do to my daughter, I'm going to do to you. Type dad. So every guy I've ever dated, he's had this talk. He's at him at the table. He's like, whatever you do to my daughter, I'm going to do to you. So if you guys, you know, do things, just be prepared. I'm like, Dad, you can't say this to people. This is like, you need to chill. He's like, no, I'm Dad. So now at this time, I'm out of college. I'm back home. I have a guy that I've been seeing. We've been talking for a year. And every time my dad would ask where I'm going, I'd say I'm going with his sister. I was friends with his sister before I even met him. But I was always with his sister. So my dad never had any idea until one night he came home. And I kind of set him up. Not my dad, my boyfriend.

00:15:00 - 00:15:18 | Speaker 5:

I told him, I said, hey, head back, go sit in the living room. I'm going to talk to your sister in my room for a minute. And I knew my dad was pulling in the driveway because I was like, he has to meet him. My dad pulls in the driveway, opens the door, sees this six-foot-one mustache-bearded man sitting on his couch.

00:15:18 - 00:15:19 | Speaker 4:

Oh, jeez.

00:15:19 - 00:15:30 | Speaker 5:

He's like, who in the heck is this? I come out, and I'm like, hi, it's my boyfriend. This is his sister. and he just looks at me and looks at my boyfriend's sister and go, y'all played me.

00:15:32 - 00:15:33 | Unknown:

Y'all played me.

00:15:33 - 00:15:44 | Speaker 5:

He'd seen her before, and he was like, y'all played me. So I'm like, no, we didn't play you. It just so happens that after that, I ended up marrying him.

00:15:45 - 00:15:46 | Speaker 3:

And did dad like him?

00:15:47 - 00:16:08 | Speaker 5:

He loved him. That's great. My dad has never invited a man to stay the night at my house, but after a week and I was sick, he asked my Ben boyfriend, and, hey, you want to stay home, stay and take care of her? You can sleep on the couch. When I tell you I was puzzled and I had no idea what was happening, I thought I was in a matrix. I'm happy. I still do that. You can spend the night. This is a lie.

00:16:09 - 00:16:26 | Speaker 3:

You know what? That's good because, you know what? Here's the deal. Dads know that they raise their daughters right, like Lydia is raised by her dad and you were raised by your dad, Janae, that you're going to make the right choice and then they'll accept that choice until those guys screw up and then they'll kill those guys.

00:16:26 - 00:16:40 | Speaker 5:

Listen, he is the only guy that my dad ever trusts. He trusts him. He tells, listen, my husband knows recipes that my great-grandma taught my dad. He loves him so much. It's malarkey.

00:16:40 - 00:16:43 | Speaker 3:

I love it. You take care of yourself, Janae, okay?

00:16:43 - 00:16:44 | Speaker 5:

Thank you, too.

00:16:44 - 00:16:45 | Speaker 3:

All right, take care of yourself.

00:16:45 - 00:17:11 | Speaker 4:
