This is the Bishop Statement at Bishop State Community College. We want you to hear what our students, educators, and business leaders have to say.

00:01:37 - 00:02:21 | Speaker 4:

My name is Patrick Pettway, and I am getting my Associates of Science and General Education with an emphasis in business administration. To me, it was a no-brainer. When you go out here and you're looking for funding to go back to college as a 40-year-old man, I got six people in my household. The extra money just doesn't just grow out of trees. For me to be able to be accepted through FAFSA and to have Bishop State pay for all of my tuition, not only that, but the curriculums, you know, they make it so easy to understand on their website. Like I said, I'm a 40-year-old man, so I don't use technology too much, but it was very understandable where I needed to go. It was extremely fast. These past two years, things have just moved in a total different type of way. It's like its own moving entity to see things manifest the way that they do.

It's Mojo in the Morning Show. War of the Roses is coming up here in a little bit. We are your home for that. Busting cheaters, stick around. Kevin, this must be something because when you brought this up this morning, Shannon and then a couple other people that were around here were all like, oh, I hate when this happens,

00:02:47 - 00:04:14 | Speaker 5:

when people will talk to you and they'll talk on the speaker yeah i mean you do this a lot and sometimes i do it as well but it's not when you call someone that's an adult and they have you on speakerphone um although i do think if you have somebody on speakerphone you should tell them that they're on speakerphone but this is a situation where i have shared parenting with josiah's mom so this is dealing with my child and jasmine who's josiah's mom and i are in a tremendous space right now like we are the best to each other that I think we've ever been and man I love it too I'm so thankful to God that we're in this place because it hasn't always been that way and it's been the courts have been involved it's been extremely tough yeah um and I'm glad we are where we are but she has been doing this thing for a while and I don't I don't like it and but I didn't really realize it and it's when I called Josiah to speak to him you can hear her in the background because he's on speakerphone and it's almost like in the beginning it felt like she was monitoring everything I had to say to him or she was like listening to everything I had to say to him and I felt like if I wanted to have a personal conversation with my son I couldn't and it kind of triggered me yesterday I called him and sometimes I'll talk to her like you know just because I don't want to just be like it used to be we're Josiah so she answered the phone hello like you know I ain't even really trying to talk to you but now we have our own conversations but she'll still be there when i'm talking to josiah i'm like damn

00:04:14 - 00:04:29 | Speaker 3:

can i just talk to my mans real quick do you think that she is doing this like keeping him on speaker or do you think he is because he could be doing multiple things like i've seen josiah sometimes yeah where you'd be talking to him and he's able to like play his ipad thing while he's

00:04:29 - 00:04:46 | Speaker 5:

i think it could be a mixture of both but again earlier on in this co-parenting relationship that we had it felt like it was intentional like i'm going to listen to this conversation and watch what you say yeah yeah or just like i don't it just felt like a controlling thing like this is

00:04:46 - 00:04:50 | Speaker 6:

my phone like you know like that kind of energy do you ever tell him can you take me off speaker

00:04:50 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 5:

phone uh i used to when he was younger because he used to like he used to make me feel like incredibly weird like can i just talk to you and i felt like he couldn't have a full conversation

00:05:00 - 00:05:13 | Speaker 4:

the way that he wanted to because in some weird way he had to like appease his mom with what he said like it's like he was almost like a puppet in a certain way like how he talked to me in person was completely different than on speakerphone with his mom in the same room yeah like it wasn't like

00:05:13 - 00:06:05 | Speaker 2:

i was talking to my son yeah yeah it's a thing and for so for my kids it's they don't do like they don't really have phones but they have ipads and so when they call me from their dad's house or when they call their dad from my house it's always on FaceTime and that to me is really super strange too because I always will try to leave the room like if if Luster Smith is calling their dad I will try to leave the room and let them have a private conversation but a lot of times like if they're at his house they'll be like or if they're at my house and they're calling him they'll be like here's mom say hi yeah say hi mom and i'm like yeah hi right yeah you know for sure it is it's really um like you want you obviously want to keep that communication open and for them to have that communication but at the same time it can be really uncomfortable right for real do you

00:06:05 - 00:06:26 | Speaker 3:

uh god man i gotta tell you that uh when i hear some of the stories sometimes with people who are in divorces i'm so happy that we never got a divorce yeah just because i can't imagine how tough it must be for everybody but it feels sometimes like the kids don't even realize the stuff that we realize like josiah is not carrying that speaker yeah which is a great

00:06:26 - 00:06:57 | Speaker 1:

thing i was just about to say it's so interesting hearing this from the parents perspective because as a kid i remember going through it but i also have a huge appreciation for the way that my dad handled it looking like looking at the entire situation from adult eyes and seeing what was going on is very interesting to be like wow y'all y'all put up with a lot very professionally to foster our relationships with both parents at the same time you do your best to because you want to

00:06:57 - 00:07:08 | Speaker 4:

you don't want your children to have to feel the angst and the pain and the stress of what is a stressful situation or to try to yeah you try to hide that from them in a certain way but it gets

00:07:08 - 00:07:19 | Speaker 6:

stuff what's up bethany hi hi um i'm a divorced parent of two kids and they use speakerphone all the time because they don't know how to talk on the phone without the speaker for some reason

00:07:19 - 00:07:25 | Speaker 5:

like they don't understand that that's what i mean yeah the speaker your ear they just don't

00:07:25 - 00:07:38 | Speaker 6:

get it they say i don't know if it's uh seen like in my just from my point of view and the way my kids are i just think it's a lack of knowing how to use the device properly yeah i actually uh

00:07:38 - 00:07:55 | Speaker 3:

have heard kev on the phone with um josiah's mom and i gotta tell you it's a very healthy relationship so i think josiah probably realizes that it's healthy and he's probably like well why can't we just have this conversation with everybody it's healthy now it wasn't before

00:07:55 - 00:07:57 | Speaker 4:

I'm not even thinking of that. Hell no.

00:07:57 - 00:07:57 | Speaker 3:

Really?

00:07:58 - 00:07:59 | Speaker 4:

And Josiah and I have had.

00:08:01 - 00:08:03 | Speaker 3:

Would Josiah ever notice that it wasn't healthy?

00:08:03 - 00:08:41 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, for sure. He's noticed a considerable change. Yeah. And I've been vocal about that change as well. Like, I don't try to hide anything from Josiah. Like, I've told Josiah. All right, this is like within the past month or two, vividly remember Josiah being in the backseat and expressing to him how I like where the relationship is with his mother and I and how we are more intentional with showcasing the positivity in our relationship because we want to show Josiah that even though the situation isn't the best, and I hate that my child has to go through two separate households in a perfect world. We grew up under the same roof and all of that, but we try to make the best of our mess.

00:08:43 - 00:08:57 | Speaker 3:

I do find it interesting when I hear some of the times the divorce situations where you'll hear like people like recording the conversations and all that stuff. And I'm going, man, your kids have to realize that that's that's going on.

00:08:57 - 00:09:23 | Speaker 4:

I've done that before, too. Really? Yeah. Because, look, I think Mike Epps had a joke one time. He was like, whoever calls the police first of them going to jail. And we ain't never had no domestic issues. I would never put my hands on a woman or anything like that. But you have these moments where somebody is acting so out of control and saying things that are so crazy. You like, man, let me just have this just in case. And I've never had to use anything like that. I've deleted it on my headphones, but I've recorded some stuff for sure.

00:09:24 - 00:10:04 | Speaker 3:

A couple of texters here that aren't picking up their phones. Lydia's been trying to call them. 586 says, my baby daddy always will promise things and never deliver. And I want to have it for proof that I can hear this. I hear that story. And then seven, three, four says, um, I like to keep it on speaker phone because I feel like sometimes they're talking bad about me and I want to make sure that I have the ability to be able to know what is said and what is not said. What parent, why would you talk bad about the. The person that is your child's parent to your child.

00:10:04 - 00:10:05 | Speaker 6:

I'm sure it happens.

00:10:05 - 00:10:06 | Speaker 3:

Oh, all the time.

00:10:06 - 00:10:13 | Speaker 6:

Yeah, but estrangement causes a power dynamic that you can manipulate in separations.

00:10:14 - 00:10:16 | Speaker 3:

But what you're doing is you're messing your kid up.

00:10:17 - 00:10:22 | Speaker 6:

Yeah, but the person who's causing the problem is not thinking about that. They're thinking of their own situation.

00:10:25 - 00:10:27 | Speaker 3:

What's up, Dana? Hi, it's Mojo in the morning. What's going on?

00:10:27 - 00:11:00 | Speaker 1:

hi dana hey mojo good morning what's up bud oh yeah you know i was married a long time ago and it he this guy her ex-husband now again but he would stand at the back door and like cross his arms when i would drop off my daughter and just be totally trying to intimidate me and that that was a bummer and every time i did call her she would make sure that uh he had to uh listen to

00:11:00 - 00:11:08 | Speaker 4:

the conversation that is and it's your child that you're going absolutely not yeah i think uh i mean

00:11:08 - 00:11:23 | Speaker 1:

he they were married they got a divorce but they got married again my uh ex-wife is something else i mean we really got divorced because of religious differences i was i'm catholic and she was the

00:11:23 - 00:11:40 | Speaker 2:

double. Felicia what's up it's Mojo in the morning Felicia. Hi yeah so I had um well I have a 15 year

00:11:40 - 00:12:06 | Speaker 5:

old and I do co-parent with his father who lives in a different state however when he was 11 and 12 he would be on speakerphone um just because I don't know he just always used speakerphone but what i liked about it was that i would actually hear the other parent asking questions about me and my parenting so that's why like it's actually really weird how it is different where there is parents that do want to be on speaker or that do want to listen in so they can get information

00:12:06 - 00:12:18 | Speaker 3:

from the child which is annoying again that's bad that's so bad your poor kid needs to be a kid and not the mediator between the two of you you know people it's and when we're on the phone it should

00:12:18 - 00:12:23 | Speaker 2:

be trying to build a relationship between the parent and the child yeah not talking about the

00:12:23 - 00:12:40 | Speaker 3:

other parent and honestly i i would hope that you talk healthily about each other because then all it does is it gives them the the feeling that they're loved what's oh no no go ahead i wanted to grab some more i gotta get to war of the roses so what is your question just like what what if a

00:12:40 - 00:12:45 | Speaker 6:

kid is uncomfortable with the relationship with one of their parents and like wants the help of

00:12:45 - 00:12:53 | Speaker 3:

the parent that they're currently with you know what's funny is whenever we do divorce things i can i hear the pain that your mom caused you in the some of the questions that you ask because i

00:12:53 - 00:13:00 | Speaker 6:

can say you you you're yeah some things i didn't know no but it's interesting though because of

00:13:00 - 00:13:05 | Speaker 3:

i mean because you look at channon and kev and their situations with you know their divorces

00:13:05 - 00:13:09 | Speaker 6:

and stuff a lot different than what do you wish you had one of those absolutely i don't think

00:13:09 - 00:13:16 | Speaker 3:

people realize how horrific the divorce my parents went through was and your mom was not nice yeah Israel, what's up?

00:13:16 - 00:13:52 | Speaker 4:

Religious differences. Hey, how you guys doing? What's going on? In my childhood, I had the same thing. And my kid, unfortunately, he's going through the same thing. Right now, he's 18. He still goes to school. And last year, well, the last three years, he was living with me. He was on point with his school and all that. Now, I just got his report card, and he's starting to fail. So, I mean, I'm not trying to talk bad about the mom, but, I mean, it's just crazy how this is, man. How kids get falling into this situation because of two parents.

00:13:52 - 00:13:57 | Speaker 3:

Well, how are you – what are you trying to do to make things better then? And that's what you got to be thinking about. What can I –

00:13:57 - 00:14:05 | Speaker 4:

In all reality, man, if the other person is not putting their part into it, there's no working out, man.

00:14:05 - 00:14:29 | Speaker 3:

Well, then look at – but look at Megan's situation then. Her dad was in a, and I don't know your story fully, Israel, but her dad had to be the dad and mom then and step up and do the right thing. And it sounds to me, and I don't know for facts on this, but I'm assuming, because I've never heard your dad even say a word bad about your mom today. He just doesn't talk about her.

00:14:29 - 00:14:36 | Speaker 6:

Correct. And he never did during, that's why I brought it up earlier. He never did during their divorce either.

00:14:36 - 00:14:45 | Speaker 3:

And Israel, I think that with your kid, even your kid's 18 or 19 years old, they will respect you more if they don't hear you trash talk.

00:14:45 - 00:14:47 | Speaker 6:

Absolutely. And they'll, they learn eventually.

00:14:49 - 00:15:01 | Speaker 4:

You know? Yeah, I mean, it's unfortunate that we go through this, but it happens, man. It's life. We just got to grow up from it and not try to follow their footsteps. but sometimes it just happens.

00:15:02 - 00:15:36 | Speaker 7:

I know, but you know what? If you're the parent, they will come back to you. I look at Megan's relationship with her dad again as this. They will come to you and they'll realize later in life, man, this guy had a lot of patience and a lot of love for me that he kept a lot of that out of my life. So you have to be, you know, we can't bubble wrap our kids, but we can keep them from hearing things that are going to be more harmful than if they fall and hurt themselves. So thank you for the call, buddy. I appreciate it. And I wish you nothing but the best. Shanice has been on for a while, so I'm going to grab you as a last call, and then I've got to move on. What's going on, Shanice?

00:15:38 - 00:16:33 | Speaker 4:

Hi. So I text in. I completely agree with Kev with the child being on speaker because early on, my daughter, when she would talk with her, she would talk just on the phone, regular, no speaker. She would go in a separate room. But as she got older and she realized the type of relationship that they have, she would put the phone on speaker. because she did not have the greatest relationship with him but it just made her okay like okay he can still hear me he knows that i'm here but i'm not really here listening to anything that he's saying so she was doing it to protect herself yes and she's 12 now going on 13 and so she didn't start doing that until she started getting older and realizing okay my mom wasn't doing this for her she was doing this so that I would feel more comfortable and now I know exactly what's going on with the relationship so she made that decision by herself to put him on speaker

00:16:33 - 00:16:39 | Speaker 7:

well good luck it sounds like you're her safety

00:16:39 - 00:16:48 | Speaker 4:

I am but she also has a stepfather he's been in her life since she was two she's good now

00:16:48 - 00:16:51 | Speaker 7:

that's good well good job on finding that guy

00:16:51 - 00:16:53 | Speaker 4:

thank you

00:16:53 - 00:16:54 | Speaker 7:

All right, have a great morning, okay?

00:18:36 - 00:19:20 | Speaker 3:

My name is Neterica Terry LaMille, and my major is general education. Some of the obstacles I have overcame at Bishop State is proving that I can show up consistently, even when my life was heavy. There are moments where I still feel overwhelmed by balancing work, leadership, parenting, and school, but Bishop reminded me that I'm capable of growth and not perfection, that I'm supported as long as I'm committed to being a better person than I was yesterday. My peers can depend on me. I'm there being poured into, but some of those students don't know that the faculty and staff are really there for them. So when they don't know that, I'm their resource that explain and show them that they're here to help us.
