My name is Patrick Pettway, and I am getting my Associates of Science and General Education with an emphasis in business administration. To me, it was a no-brainer. Mojo in the morning show. I'm watching the TV right now. I'm watching L.A. television and seeing these fires that are going on, Which, by the way, can we get, we got a thousand TV screens in there. Can we get TV back in the studio so I don't have to say it? I do miss that.

I think they got rid of the TVs in the studio so that we had like all the outside world out there so that we didn't know what time of day it was. It's like a casino. You're right. They want us to just kind of sit in here all morning, work, and then go, oh my God, I should have been home like five hours ago. This is like Dan Campbell. Or Dan Gilbert. Somebody told me that's what it's like working for Quicken.

But for the first time ever since my time in this job, I have a window that I can look out and actually see the weather that I'm talking about. Because half the time people would be like, Shannon, it's snowing. It's not sunny. And I had no idea.

Well, if you looked out your window in California, you would not be seeing some great stuff because you'd be seeing either smoke, ash, or fire, worst case scenario. know um and i'm watching these people and by the way everybody thinks all these are just a bunch of celebrities homes that are burning down you know i heard somebody on social media wrote uh who cares these are rich people they'll rebuild their things these aren't just rich people these are people these are people like you and me that live in a neighborhood and then the rich people live at the top of the neighborhood you live at the bottom of the neighborhood but guess what the

bottom and the top is burning right now for sure and also rich people still have things that they are that are sentimental and they're still people yeah absolutely so these so these fires for those

that don't know are it's a tinderbox there because they haven't gotten rain in a while but then these fires start and then the reason why this one is so bad worse than probably anything that they've had ever at least in the last decade or so is because there's hurricane force winds that are coming off of the water that are causing these fires to be unmanageable for fire people to put them out. Insane. And I want to, I want to have you listen to some of this audio. Okay. And when you start hearing this, you'll go, God, can you imagine this was my neighborhood?

and then i want you to think about this if this was yours this was your home or this is in your area like what would you go grab like what would be the things that you go in your house and just

go take but we have just found out that this building right here back uh right there where all the flames are that building has also caught on fire and police firefighters they're here trying to evacuate the people that live in that building we've seen people come out just in on their bikes on their motorcycles just trying to get out of here as soon as they can. They have nothing in their hands. They are just trying to escape. I really wanted to show you what it looks like behind me. We're at Palisades Charter High School and we showed you this shot earlier. The school has, the iconic school, has burned to the ground and just being here, this is off to Mescal Canyon.

This is horrible, you guys. We were just on the, on Dove Creek Lane down below. This is Creek side and unfortunately it's everything is almost gone i only see uh two three structures two at this point two structures left on this entire street everything is on fire down here there's

no words to even describe how heartbreaking how heartbreaking that's a life that's your entire life you you don't get that back the memories are gone i hope they're alive

wow that is that's unbelievable i just want to tell you like i know you were we were kind of

like poo-pooing on celebrities and rich people but that that neighborhood right there is like ben affleck tom hank steven spielberg reese witherspoon now it's headed towards calabasas which of course is like you know Bieber the Kardashians um but it's it's that whole west

side of LA but the other the other thing that you have to know about the iconic stuff that's in that area too they're saying it's getting close it's going towards Pasadena Pasadena is where the Rose Bowl was well there's so many historical areas the historic stadium that uh I think it was Kirk Herbstreet and Pat McAfee that said they believe that the national championship every year should be in the rose bowl they just had the oregon and ohio state game there um but these are all in the area there i mean these are all very expensive homes but in california a 200 000 home is a million dollars because that's just how outrageously expensive that whole state has become um but it is so sad to see this it's sad to see and by the way think about this um fema had the hurricanes to deal with now they've got this to deal with i mean it is just nuts to see what's going on natural disaster wise scares me and to be quite honest with you having just gone to florida like they didn't do much at all down there like there's not there's not much that has been done to clean up the last two hurricanes to repair and i don't i wouldn't

even say it has been katrina and new orleans i don't think that they fixed what happened there they fixed certain areas but if you go to new orleans right now there are still devastating areas that have just been left behind flames still have clean water exactly and i'm wondering like why aren't we putting anything into place not to prevent obviously that's not going to happen but to help in these situations like why is there not more like mother nature is going to be the thing that's going to win every time but why is there not a water system in place in the hills that they have easy access to like a suppression system like why are we seen prepared for anything

correct but you have to guys that have to understand something this is this is there's this fire the only thing that presents this fire is if the hurricane force winds don't come the way

that they came no i get that but we have major wildfires there every year and it seems like We haven't come up with a better system. If you look at Florida and the hurricanes, we didn't have hurricane building standards, and now we do. And that's helped prevent a lot of damage. What is in place in California? Because they have the earthquake standards. Why is there nothing, from my perspective, and I don't have full knowledge of the situation, there could be something in place. Please let me know, but for the fires. They still don't even know how this one started.

Which is insane.

It's sad, it's scary, and I hate that it keeps happening. Remember the last big one that they had? The last big one that they had, they thought it was some guy that was lighting a fire that was camping out.

There was another one that was a gender reveal. The plain one? Like, truly, that's what it was that started that whole thing?

So if your neighborhood's up in smoke and your neighborhood's lighting like this, and you see that the fire is starting to come your way, and there was a fire, what, a couple of weeks ago, I remember, everybody was talking about Dick Van Dyke.

iconic actor. They were like, Dick, you got to, you know, he was, had a garden hose and he was trying to put the, you know, a garden hose to, to keep his property there. They're like, go get your belongings and get the hell out of here. What would you go grab? Because I was thinking about this at my house and mine in an all seriousness, seriousness would be, I think the first two kids that we have, Joe and Jacob, there are so many photos we don't even have because they weren't taken and put on digital digital and then there are some digital stuff that chelsea probably hasn't put to the cloud like i there's so many pictures and then you're thinking about your social security i don't even know where the hell my social security card or

passport is right now that's replaceable but you know how hard it is to not if you don't but i know

that it's a replaceable but if you don't have it yeah it's now you having to figure out how to go

replace and nobody i feel like nobody at least i'm not nobody's prepared for that like my passport should be in my little like safe it's not right now because i just used it my same with my social security card same thing with the one thing that i would grab which is like the kids baby books that have all of the mementos that cannot be replaced or something that shanny's granny gave you know the little hats that they came home from the hospital and like that's the stuff that i care about everything else maybe the one person i actually saved up for i would like everything

else i seriously do not care about same i don't i have one item one item teddy bear with my baby blanket inside of it so my baby blanket was falling apart and i wanted to if i wanted children one day be able to gift it on and still have like my childhood thing be their childhood thing so i have a brand new teddy bear in my closet that's it i don't care about anything else see i mean like

I had Josiah when he was 2013, was the year he was born. So all of the pictures that I've taken at home primarily are on my phone.

And if you got Google Photos, it'll just upload it there, and they have a feature where you can print an actual photo book. But I got this dog-ass, like, 10x10 shelf with everything I like in the world. Probably can't carry it out, but I could do one of those arm sweeps and, like, knock everything in there.

We're devastated and praying that this fire, or that the winds die down and that the fire departments that are all fighting this fire from literally the whole west side of the country, states are sending their fire teams out there. And also praying for your boyfriend lives out there, huh?

Yeah, my boyfriend lives in Newport Beach. It's about, I think, 45 minutes away from the Palisades, and they've been without power for like 15 hours.

Yeah, they're shutting power off on purpose because they don't want downed power lines causing more fires.

Exactly, and the fires have actually jumped the PCH, so they're actually burning the lifeguard stations and the buildings on the beach, which you're supposed to be safe on the beach, and the winds are going between 80 to 100 miles per hour so they can't even get anything up in the air to fight the fires. That's why there's absolutely no containment in them.

God, well, our prayers...

Like you said, you know, even the rich people are people and they have memories and they don't deserve to lose everything just because they have the money to rebuild it.

This is all in the hurricanes are going to do to your insurance because your insurance is changing. no matter what because insurance companies have can't pay out all this money but what's up gail

hi um yeah i was just calling in my um sister and her family live in pasadena and um at last night she said at 2 a.m their time they had authorities come through with a bullhorn um announcing to Everyone that is mandatory evacuation, they had prepared and got some backpacks packed with essential items earlier in the evening. And they have a handicapped son, so they had, he's tube fed, and so they had to pack, you know, everything they could for him. Two dogs and their dog leashes, and they had to, you know, emergency leave in the middle of the night. So they don't know yet if their home is still there or not. Last we heard from her was 6.30 our time, so 3.30 their time, and, you know, it's just very scary.

Yeah, it's nuts. Well, please know that we're thinking of your sister, and we hope everything is okay. interesting a lot a lot of people would think of this fire and think and don't realize that a fire could happen to your home or apartment or whatever it is that you got to think of this but also floods we get a lot of times where there's flooding and look what happened in dearborn where i mean it was like countless uh you know years we were getting these massive floods john davis our great john davis here at the radio station guy lost everything in his basement i mean i i think that this is one of those things where it's like you look at this and you go god thank god i live in michigan or ohio and i'm freezing my ass off and i'm not living out there but stuff can happen here tornadoes whatever uh you got to think of this like where those things are you know the lebron

I would say Bishop State is like a home for people. It may not be like a four-year where you have a dorm, you have a roommate, you have a rec center, but it's still a place you can go meet new people, classmates, put them in the hallway, make friends with advisors on all these teachers and everything like that. It's just a place you can feel like you're in.

yourself and not try to be that you don't want to be. With this program, I learned networking a lot. We've had two dinners with heads of different companies dealing with shipping or even game design builds, dealing with AutoCAD or 3D modeling. So really being able to meet new people or meet heads of new people has been really helpful. I don't come from a wealthy family, so four years were kind of not out the picture, but less probable for me to go to.
