When Democrats are messing up, I say it. When Republicans are messing up, I say it. I'm Essie Kupp, a journalist and political commentator. And on my podcast, Off the Cup, I help you make sense of the often nonsensical news. I do this on cable news too, but on my podcast, I can really let loose and be my honest, unfiltered self. I just want to talk about something that happened this week because it's so bonkers, so stupid, such incredibly bad politics. We have to talk about it. Come for the hot takes, stay for the sanity. Listen to Off the Cup on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Actually, to be honest with you, I don't think this mom necessarily threw down F-bombs because of what he lied to her about. I think she just likes throwing down F-bombs. And you'll notice that when you hear it. Phone scam senseless survey Lots of good prizes Including $10,000 in free groceries Could be yours today Taylor Swift tickets all coming up Hey before we go any further real quick Ladies and gentlemen The President of the United States would like to sing Shannon a pre-birthday Happy birthday everybody

00:04:37 - 00:04:48 | Speaker 6:

Happy birthday To you Happy birthday To you Happy birthday, James Allen

00:04:48 - 00:04:57 | Speaker 1:

Happy birthday to you That needs to be played for every birthday I think so Forever and ever I think that you got it right there

00:04:57 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 6:

Well, we use it for any birthday

00:05:00 - 00:05:01 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. You don't know what Navy's saying.

00:05:01 - 00:05:21 | Speaker 1:

It's generic. Yeah, we're going to be like, hey, Adam. Well, happy pre-birthday, Shannon. Thank you. Shannon's birthday is tomorrow, and if you wonder why I'm saying happy pre-birthday is that she's going to be off tomorrow through the weekend to celebrate her birthday, and you will not be here for the big party that we're still throwing for you tomorrow. Oh, good.

00:05:21 - 00:05:23 | Speaker 3:

That makes me so happy. Yeah.

00:05:23 - 00:05:26 | Speaker 1:

We throw it on your birthday, so it's happy tomorrow.

00:05:26 - 00:05:32 | Speaker 3:

You know, I forgot to bring in a birthday treat, and I had planned on getting cupcakes last night, and that just didn't happen.

00:05:32 - 00:05:32 | Speaker 1:

Yeah.

00:05:32 - 00:05:45 | Speaker 3:

So I sent you guys a text message this morning and said, everybody send me their Starbucks order. I'm going to order and buy everybody Starbucks so I don't have to hear you guys gripe about how I didn't bring in birthday treats. Oh, come on. And then nobody wanted Starbucks.

00:05:46 - 00:05:46 | Speaker 1:

Yeah.

00:05:46 - 00:05:48 | Speaker 3:

We're not doing birthday treats.

00:05:49 - 00:05:51 | Speaker 1:

Mike ruined it for all of us.

00:05:51 - 00:05:55 | Speaker 3:

We're not doing birthday treats. I was so stressed when I woke up this morning. I'm like, crap.

00:05:55 - 00:06:04 | Speaker 2:

Well, you should have been because I was really looking forward to Christina's cake and bakery pastries. Oh, my gosh. I was like, I know she's going up to Shelby Township for the treats.

00:06:04 - 00:06:11 | Speaker 1:

Can I tell you my birthday fiasco with you today? So I got you a birthday card.

00:06:11 - 00:06:11 | Speaker 3:

Is this from you?

00:06:12 - 00:06:56 | Speaker 1:

I picked out a card, yes. You can read it later if you'd like, but it's insulting. Like every birthday card for anybody that turns 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, or 90. They're insulting cards that come out. It's nothing about how great it is to turn the age that you are turning, but it's all the insults. But I do have to tell you that I didn't gather a gift, so I figured I would just go to my area of my house where I have bottles of booze or wine that have been given to me by other people. Yeah. And can I go on record to ask people this? do not give a bottle of booze to a person for a birthday and take a sharpie marker to write on it.

00:06:56 - 00:06:59 | Speaker 3:

I do that. I do that.

00:06:59 - 00:07:06 | Speaker 1:

Well, I think I almost gave you back the bottle of wine that you gave me. It's in my car right now. Honestly. I grabbed it in the dark.

00:07:06 - 00:07:09 | Speaker 3:

I'll take it. Let me just tell you this.

00:07:09 - 00:07:13 | Speaker 1:

Can somebody run down? Reese, could you real quick run down? I got you. It will be fast.

00:07:14 - 00:07:18 | Speaker 3:

I always take a silver or a gold sharpie and I write

00:07:18 - 00:07:23 | Speaker 1:

oh my god hold on is it hold on Reese run down real quick I would die

00:07:23 - 00:07:31 | Speaker 3:

that would be so funny I always do that because I like people I always like to tell somebody if they gave me a bottle like Spike you always give me a bottle of wine and I always like to tell you if I'm drinking it

00:07:31 - 00:07:40 | Speaker 1:

passenger side cup holders so go on the passenger side and you'll see it the cup holders grab it and run right up see how fast you can go ready go come on this is how I get my kids

00:07:40 - 00:07:42 | Speaker 3:

to do stuff for me around my house I'll time you

00:07:42 - 00:07:44 | Speaker 1:

and then they always want to do it

00:07:44 - 00:07:45 | Speaker 3:

it's a race

00:07:45 - 00:08:32 | Speaker 1:

So I grabbed it in the dark. This is no lie. I grabbed it in the dark. All right. I'm like, oh, this seems like a nice bottle. Grab it in the dark. Grab out. Get in the car. Come into the parking lot where it's now lit because we have nice lights in our parking lot. Thank you, Colleen, our boss. She actually lit up the parking lot for us. And I look at the bottle of wine. It says 52 on the side of the thing, which is what I just turned. Yeah. And you may be right. It may be, quite possibly, the bottle of wine that you gave me because it was a fancy 52 on the side. So when you get mad at me for the fact that I re-gifted gifts that you've given to me, like that Lululemon, I almost re-gifted to you the gift that I got from you.

00:08:32 - 00:08:34 | Speaker 3:

Oh, no, if it comes back up here, I'm taking it.

00:08:34 - 00:08:37 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, booze is the one re-gift I will happily accept.

00:08:37 - 00:08:47 | Speaker 1:

Can we do this? Can we open it during the show and have a glass of wine during the show? We've never drank wine during the show. We have forever. Here he comes. You never have.

00:08:47 - 00:08:48 | Speaker 2:

I'm pretty sure Shannon has it. I have not.

00:08:49 - 00:08:53 | Speaker 1:

Give it to Shannon right there. Shannon, is it? Wait, look at the 52.

00:08:53 - 00:08:55 | Speaker 2:

Oh, yeah, that's definitely her writing. 52!

00:09:00 - 00:09:17 | Speaker 1:

I almost re-gifted you the bottle of wine that you gave me. So, happy 40th birthday, Shannon. Hold on, pass that back over to me. Happy 52nd. Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.

00:09:17 - 00:09:18 | Speaker 3:

Oh, he's going to write on it. I'm going to write on it.

00:09:19 - 00:09:26 | Speaker 1:

Hold on. 40. I'm doing 40. I just made it 40 for you over there, so happy birthday.

00:09:26 - 00:09:27 | Speaker 3:

No, don't throw it.

00:09:27 - 00:09:28 | Speaker 1:

Happy birthday.

00:09:28 - 00:09:29 | Speaker 3:

Just keep it over there. I'll come get it.

00:09:29 - 00:09:33 | Speaker 1:

I'll leave it. I'll send it over to you. Oh, okay. Thank you. Oh, God, that's a great bottle of wine.

00:09:33 - 00:09:36 | Speaker 3:

I mean, it is. It is. You're missing out.

00:09:36 - 00:09:54 | Speaker 1:

Wait till Megan's birthday when I re-gift her that floating in the air gift card that she gave me. How many years ago did I get that for you? It was pre-COVID, I think. By the way, that place I found out is still open. I drove by it the other day, so thank God it's still there.

00:09:55 - 00:10:02 | Speaker 3:

Well, then I want it back. There should be an expiration limit on gifts. And if you don't use it by X amount of a day, I get it back.

00:10:02 - 00:11:18 | Speaker 2:

You may lose out on it because in a few weeks here, I might give it to Mike. So Mike, get ready for that birthday. Speaking of birthdays, so I got to wish a happy birthday to, it sounds like a fake name, John Smith. That really is his name. John is a great guy. He's a great friend of Chelsea and our family. And he celebrated a big birthday. And we ended up getting a phone call from Brittany, his wife, saying, hey, are you guys out and about? And we're like, yeah, we're out and about. And Chelsea and I were in the car together. And she goes, could you do me a favor? She goes, I put a cake on hold, and I need somebody to just go pick it up. She's got all the stuff. She's making them like a lasagna for dinner and all this stuff. So we go to pick up the cake. And when we got there, it said happy birthday on it, but it didn't say happy birthday, John. Yeah. So we took the liberties and I actually threw this in our in our show prep thing. I'll put it in the group check. I took the liberties and actually it was Chelsea's idea. So this is all on her. If John's upset to change it to one of our favorite things that we like to say to John, which is kind of out of love. And it says, happy birthday, you big dick.

00:11:18 - 00:11:21 | Speaker 4:

And they did it for you

00:11:21 - 00:11:29 | Speaker 2:

And they did it for us Which is honestly amazing Because I said to her, there is no way they're going to do Happy birthday, you big dick

00:11:29 - 00:11:32 | Speaker 1:

I've had a lot of things rejected that I've asked them to put on cakes before

00:11:32 - 00:11:34 | Speaker 4:

Oh, that is so good

00:11:34 - 00:12:10 | Speaker 2:

So they put it on the cake And the funny Reason why we laugh and joke about this Is because we have said it So many times in front Of little Brooke Who's like the cutest kid in the world that Brooke has repeated, you big dick, before. And a matter of fact, hold on, let me see if I can find this real quick. I'll find the audio of this. Because John got surprised by the little present that we gave. But also, Brooke got surprised and actually said the actual saying, which probably is not good.

00:12:10 - 00:12:12 | Speaker 4:

It's always funnier when a little one is saying that.

00:12:12 - 00:12:19 | Speaker 2:

I just hope she doesn't say it. This is to be honest with you. I hope she doesn't ever say it in front of her teacher.

00:12:20 - 00:12:22 | Speaker 4:

Or at a birthday party for a friend.

00:12:22 - 00:12:23 | Speaker 2:

Or grandparents. That would be the worst one.

00:12:23 - 00:12:24 | Speaker 4:

What are you, big dick?

00:12:27 - 00:12:28 | Speaker 2:

Not a great thing.

00:12:29 - 00:13:05 | Speaker 4:

What are you, big dick? It's so funny you say that because I actually just pre-ordered for Valentine's Day. Wes and I don't really celebrate Valentine's Day. I always maintain it's a holiday for the kids. but um detroit cookie company and mike i know you love to try cookie company you can order cookie cakes right so i pre-ordered one for valentine's day because i'm actually having a little surgery on valentine's day so i'm not gonna i'm gonna be like out of commission but um i ordered one for west that says i love your dick wow wow and they did it i love that wow your dick wow

00:13:05 - 00:13:06 | Speaker 2:

Wow. Wait a second.

00:13:06 - 00:13:08 | Speaker 4:

You're going to open it up and be like, what?

00:13:10 - 00:13:15 | Speaker 2:

That's like, by the way, that would be the greatest thing any woman could ever say to their man, right?

00:13:15 - 00:13:19 | Speaker 1:

But imagine if they mix up the delivery boxes, it goes to the wrong place.

00:13:21 - 00:13:32 | Speaker 2:

Mojo in the morning. Tina. Oh, it's solo Tina. What's going on, Tina? We met Tina during COVID and we kept her company while she was hanging across the border in Canada. And what did you call in for?

00:13:33 - 00:13:38 | Speaker 3:

Well, good morning, everyone, but especially happy birthday, Shannon. Thank you, Dina.

00:13:39 - 00:13:41 | Speaker 2:

Or as President Biden says, no.

00:13:45 - 00:14:12 | Speaker 3:

And Shannon, I just have to tell you, I have always admired you. I love you on the show. I love all of you, but I wanted to, you're very hard on yourself sometimes. And I yell at the radio, I'm like, Shannon, be kind to yourself, because you are so kind, you are genuine, you are face-filled, you are funny, and you are a great mama. So be kind to yourself and happy, happy birthday.

00:14:12 - 00:14:22 | Speaker 2:

Wow, those are kind words. That's very nice. Would you like to drink from our bottle of wine that we have here, the 5240 wine? That wine is going to be called forever.

00:14:23 - 00:14:29 | Speaker 4:

Thank you so much. That means a lot to me. Tina is the best. We'll drink maple syrup.

00:14:29 - 00:14:32 | Speaker 2:

Maple syrup. Love you, Tina. Take care of yourself.

00:14:32 - 00:14:35 | Speaker 4:

Thank you, Tina. Love you, Tina. Love you, everyone. Bye, guys.

00:14:35 - 00:14:52 | Speaker 2:

Bye. The funny thing about regifting and doing that is sometimes when you do the regifting, and it's usually like at Christmas time, you'll always end up getting a bunch of stuff, and then you'll go, oh, God, I got to give somebody something. And honestly, I think booze or wine or something is like the most regifted thing.

00:14:52 - 00:14:53 | Speaker 4:

Oh, for sure.

00:14:53 - 00:14:59 | Speaker 2:

You have to look in those little bags that you hold them in because I have done it before where I've gone.

00:15:00 - 00:15:07 | Speaker 3:

a friend's house late, and I'm like, oh, God, we've got to grab something. Chelsea, hold on. We'll grab something and put it in there. And they'll leave. People will leave a note at the bottom or put anything.

00:15:07 - 00:15:12 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, or like a gift card. Sometimes you throw a gift card in there. Yeah, well, first off, if it's a gift

00:15:12 - 00:15:43 | Speaker 3:

card, I'd be pissed. That was not meant to go to them. I wanted that gift card for me. But it's the note, too. And then the other one, too, is how on those gift bags, they have the little card almost attached. Yes. And people will fill them out. And sometimes you don't even look that they actually filled out those cards. Yeah, don't fill out. with those cards. Let everybody recycle those bags for a few years. Yeah, and please don't write on the bottles of wine. Shannon. Derek, what's going on? Morning. Morning. What's up? You want to say something to Shannon? Yeah.

00:15:44 - 00:15:49 | Speaker 1:

Well, more to Mike and Shannon. How is it that Shannon gets a party and she's not even there and Mike can't even get one?

00:15:49 - 00:15:56 | Speaker 3:

No, we're not having a party. We're Sam's party. Is there wine? Yeah. Okay. Are we celebrating?

00:15:56 - 00:15:58 | Speaker 4:

That's just a normal Wednesday. Yes.

00:15:58 - 00:16:31 | Speaker 3:

on this one wednesday yeah mike's problem with the birthday thing is that every time that it's his birthday we're always on vacay that time yeah so it kind of screws it all up so right his problem is not us it was his parents having him at that time you should have you should have moved you should have moved to a non-off week mike uh i'll talk to my mom about that all right see see what if she would have held off for like one more week or had the baby a little week earlier you know remember this with your new baby. Maybe you just changed your vacation. Ah. No. Sorry, thanks for the call.

00:16:33 - 00:17:07 | Speaker 6:
