Good morning, good morning, good morning. Welcome to the Mojo in the Morning Show. I get nervous when, like, fellow broadcasters come into this studio.

But I get nervous when, you know, Hall of Famers come in here. Like, this guy, by the way, is the voice of voices. And I know how good he is because when I watch a game and my 17-year-old son says to me all the time, the best announcer in the NHL. You got 17-year-olds, like the younger generation that still love you. In studio with us this morning is the voice of the Red Wings. Ken Daniels is with us, guys. Give it up for Ken. By the way, do people ask you all the time where Mickey is or is Mickey with you? Like, do people do that? Because I get that sometimes where people will say, if I'm out somewhere, they'll say, is Spike with you or Shannon with you or something like that? Do people ask? All the time. Do they?

Yeah. Some places I go, they should know he shouldn't be there because, you know, he's got celiac and he's not eating in a restaurant. Yeah. You know, Mickey and I both have this thing where people say, if they come up to Mick and they say, where's Ken? Or if people come to me, where's Mick? We both say, oh, he's around here somewhere. at least we're at the event even if we're not there

wow I listen to that voice of yours and I can hear the gravel and after a great game after a really exciting maybe an overtime game do you even go home with a voice? yeah do you never lose your voice at all?

no I was actually because what's been going around I guess about two weeks ago we were on the the west coast trip and i thought oh boy i'm gonna i'm gonna lose it now then my brother just sent me something last night about this honey you can buy online i can't remember the name of it but crap for 34 a jar i hope it works but i just ordered it on amazon and we'll see he said oh it's great so i said okay but no generally i've been knockwood pretty lucky you know who turned me on

something recently dan miller turned me on same thing that that voice it was a spray that he turned me on to that that helped me out it's a spray like when you're about to lose your voice i got it from monty our our uh our good pharmacist of course everyone knows no monty monty's the greatest yeah but but uh dan heard heard me talking and heard my voice kind of going raspy

and he sent me a text and told me to go get your something yeah yes yes singers yeah everybody uses I was at 12 and Telegraph, and I went to go into the convenience store where the gas station is, and I walk in, there's Monty, and a minute later, in walks Mickey. We're all in Carhartt, standing in the convenience store, and there's Monty. I introduce him to Mickey, and then Mickey's now seeing Monty. Monty's the best.

Ken and I have a history that he might not even be aware, But we both moved to Michigan the same week in 1997, and so I think we both are responsible for bringing the Stanley Cups back-to-back to Michigan.

This was the, you know, when you started announcing. So you didn't announce the first, the 97?

No, I was with Hockey Night in Canada and then applied for the job in May, and then the tragic limo accident happened, and I had already come down and interviewed with Atanas Hillich at the time.

and uh pass was becoming fox sports which is now valley and i interviewed and then the limo accident happened and i said boy this is going to be a while i was the least of their worries and i really didn't sign until september wow i'll tell you the best this speaks to the character

here of this man in this room because i remember the 2008 stanley cup uh playoffs and you filled in for ken cowell who who does the radio announcing but had laryngitis he sounds a little like i do right now and uh we gotta get that spray yeah so we get to game six it comes to the end of the game and the red wings are about to seal the deal ken takes off his headphones hands him to ken cal who has laryngosis you got to wrap this up you got to make the final call and send the wings into stanley cup world like he actually he it's so selfless because very few times in a career of an announcer do you get to do something so momentous that's going to be replayed again and again and again throughout history of sports and he handed the headphones back like no this is your job you gotta wow and so ken cowl did it with like the last 10 seconds he you know mustered up enough voice to be able to make that call you remember that well spike and you know what and

during the uh there was a time out and i took my headset off and i kept talking to ken you gotta do it and he said no i don't and i said suck it up you can do it you can do the final seconds just do it and he didn't want to because he was beside me handing me the cards for radio read because i only flew down with the the wives and the families uh the Illiches had a private plane so we flew down to Pittsburgh at four o'clock in the afternoon and I didn't really get there till about six o'clock before the game and I called it with Paul Woods on the radio and I had to convince Ken to do it but I'm glad he did it wasn't my place to call that but you're right we because now we well hopefully we're back in the playoffs at some point sooner than later but television only does the first round we used to do two and then the network takes over uh i've been fortunate when nbc was around and i was doing some network games for them in the playoffs but um yeah we only get to do one round so it was just fun for me to be part that was when zetterberg put it off mark andre flurry's ass oh yeah oh so great so good i remember well those were uh fun times and um you know we'll

get back could you do me a favor because you have such a iconic uh you know uh call can you teach Shannon how to call a goal. Give her how you would call it, and then Shannon has to do the imitation of you. Oh my goodness, now you're putting me on the spot.

I don't know how many people. You know, it's funny, because that's what she said. You don't watch it. You did great. and people will ask me because i'm on cameo and people reach out to me on cameo to try to to do a call and it's got to be for me you've just got to feel it and it's got to be live like i you know what i'm not good at faking it where do you do the camp where do you do cameos in your house uh i do them everywhere some people want them at little caesar's oh really from the gondola oh the money we send to the jamie daniels foundation that is amazing do them at little caesar's sometimes unsuspecting to both mick and ozzy when we're on the road i'll be saying happy birthday to Art from son Dan, and I'll turn the phone around and I go, Mick, say happy birthday to Art. And he'll say happy birthday to Art, so you never know what you're going to get.

That's how I should have done the baby announcement. Oh my God, that would have been so good, Mike. Mike just found out that he's having a baby. Let's just say a few months ago, he pulled the goalie. Good one. Such a dad joke, but a good one. Hold on a second, hold on. We've got to have audio with this ken daniels has to say mike just mike just uh or ali just put it to be ali pulling the goalie right ali just pulled the goalie and mike scores and wins ali just pulled the goalie mike scores and he's a winner oh my god that is the best i i have to first off ken daniels with us right now i have to talk about this because this is such a big event um but i also need to talk about this because you suffered the worst thing that a parent could ever suffer when you lost your son, Jamie. And I felt for you as a father of boys, and I felt for you as a parent fearful of your kids, you know.

Having, you know, this fentanyl stuff that's going on right now scares the bejesus out of me with my boys. I talk to them all the time. Like, guys, you got to, you can't, you know, I know you're going to want to experiment. You're going to want to have fun. You're going to want to do stuff. But this is a crazy world right now. And first off, just give a background on what Jamie, your son, was like as a young man.

Oh, he was a wonderful kid. He was precocious and loved to laugh, and when he started laughing and best friends with his sister Arlen, and, you know, I talked to Jamie after every game, even going through his struggles. I mean, he changed, obviously, because opioids just change the chemical receptors in your brain, and you're not who you think you are, and when you become an addict, as much as you want to stop, you can't. And we saw Jamie change until, you know, finally he said, you know, dad i need to go to rehab but as a family we we kept it quiet but he he went to florida and maybe we shouldn't have and and we're learning now that you know the the stigma around addiction can reclude recovery and we we need to talk about it and make it public but uh jamie even in his time in florida and went through detox which is the most painful thing anyone can go through whether you're an alcoholic whether you're a a user of drugs we call it substance use disorder now to go through a painful detox of at least 30 days it's the worst type of flu and struggle you could have where you just want to die at that point and if you don't have help doing it that's where the brain says I can't go through this I need to use to feel better and you can't help yourself even if you want to stop where the Reagan said back in the 80s say no to drugs no you can't because the brain won't let you the brain says I can't feel like this I need to use and that's what happens but you know when jamie was in florida went through the detox was working for a law firm in florida and then he got patient brokered and the espne 60 did a great piece on that there's a movie on amazon prime called body brokers which you can watch i haven't had the heart to watch it yet where just the greedy side of the recovery business gets involved and they want the cycle to continue because they built the insurance industry so they find kids with good insurance they send you to a home that's anything but sober jamie thought boy i'm good now dad 228 days in sobriety uh he was paying three weeks of his own rent at a place he was living and he was working at a law firm he thought he could save money some kid patient brokered him for 50 a month come live in this house they go to that house and that house sends you to their doctor who prescribed you something and their doctor prescribed jamie xanax which he shouldn't have been on xanax jamie felt better about himself and they would do blood tests that were unnecessary and they send those blood tests uh out to labs and the labs built the insurance industry so we were getting bills for more than 60 000 some people get bills for more than millions and as it turns out uh in the end um you know that that night we were in winnipeg and i'll never forget and jamie and i spoke after every game excuse me after every game and i talked to jamie one night and he said dad i painted the wheels of my car black and i said oh no you didn't and he said yeah you're gonna love it i'll i'll take a picture in the morning because it's too dark now but when i spoke to him he said boy you guys had

a bad game and i said no we didn't we won he said well i saw the first period you're awful i said that we were we're in winnipeg but we won the game in the end he said okay i was outside painting the wheels but i'll send you a picture in the morning and unfortunately jamie never woke up someone in that house gave him a pill that was laced with fentanyl now should he have known not to take the pill 100 but when that doctor put him on xanax and feeling better about himself should know not to take it but also didn't know it was laced with fentanyl and jamie was in his bed that night and the kid who patient brokered him and that house uh left him there to die and they waited over an hour to call police um who then called the birmingham police department and many friends i have in the birmingham police department came in and told me that morning so that was the last time i spoke oh my god that call was that night and then uh he passed on

uh early december of uh 2016 december 7th ken in december 16 in december of 2016 you didn't even hear much about fentanyl at all that was not a thing and now it's just pouring into our country and these kids are getting yeah getting i we i have a very good friend who lost his uh son um and by all accounts the parents don't know for sure but they by all accounts they believe that he he you know took you know uh a pill from a friend and it was laced with fentanyl and he died and and he's known as a drug addict now and that was his first

time trying a drug trying a drug yeah they disguise him as skittles now yeah knowing the candy and that's how bad it is not only in this country but in Canada too and you can't trust anything and not only that I mean when Jamie was at Michigan State he was turned on opioids by a friend of his in his freshman year who said hey you know when the doctor prescribed the pills that can't be bad you get high and kids get high and they try to within five days Jamie was addicted because everyone's different everyone's brain is different you know someone else in a family can try it and another you know brother sister does it and and there's just too many pills and in parents homes now grandparents homes now grand your grandfather had you know knee surgery ten years ago and the pills are still sitting there get rid of them there's a way to to dispose of them safely. Don't flush them down the toilet. Lake Superior, there's a big problem even in the water system where people just flush them in the toilet. There are Deterra pouches, which we're giving away at our breakfast on Thursday morning, just to safe disposal. If you have prescription drugs in your home, you wouldn't leave a loaded gun in your home where kids can find it. And believe me, and I know Jamie's friends did this, they would go to friends' homes and search the parents' medicine cabinets to find the drugs and get them out of there they're too readily available can you you had

turned this tragedy into right now a foundation that is unbelievable i don't even know what the exact number is of what the jamie daniels foundation has uh has done as far as you know raising money and awareness three millions holy cow it's awesome god you know how proud jamie

must be of you we know well and and just the simple fact of what you went back to we got to The focus on the prevention, the recovery, and then most importantly, I think, and this is why I do the Families Against Narcotics work, is the stigma that's attached to it and reducing that attitude people have about, oh, he's an addict or he's a junkie, instead of saying, this is a loved one who so quickly fell into the wrong thing and needs help. Like any other medical condition, we would want to instantly throw anything to help someone recover from an illness. This is an illness.

Ken Daniels is in with us right now, the voice of the Red Wings. The Jamie Daniels Foundation raises money that has done some amazing things. Will you tell just real quick what the amazing things the foundation has now done with the million-plus dollars and more that you're raising?

Well, currently we support collegiate recovery programs at nine colleges and universities across the state of Michigan. We provide access, Spike was saying, to support and resources for more than 170,000 students. And these programs range from peer-to-peer counseling, certified therapists, administrator training, sober living, and dedicated meeting space, a full range of support. There's a sober dome. There is such a thing as sober tailgating. You can still have fun. You can still be with people. You can still feel the community. Another recovery initiative. we are very excited about is the brand-new Adolescent Addiction Recovery Center that opened just a few weeks ago in Troy, Michigan. Dr. Matt LeCasse, a wonderful psychiatrist, Children's Hospital of Michigan. So we promote the family counseling there because there's also dual diagnosis. You can be addicted, but you may also have depression problems. There are other issues that could come aboard. So this is unique because it focuses solely on the needs of children, of teens, young adults, And we're making sure that everyone is welcome, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. And that's in the colorful Children's Hospital of Michigan building in Troy.

Wow. So there's a couple of things going on. One, Ken and the Jamie Daniels Foundation has a cool event that's happening on Thursday that we're going to talk about. but also a website where you can actually, from the comfort of your home or car or wherever you are, log online to jamiedanielsfoundation.org and bid on some of the most incredible things that you'd never get a chance to actually do, experiences and cool opportunities. And I know we donated stuff, you know, with our jingle ball that's coming up and also in-studio hang out with Mojo in the morning. You get to actually be here and be part of the show. Maybe you'll actually get to do that. But here's the thing. You also have some really cool stuff that was donated by other people. And then Thursday, you and Mick are getting together with a whole bunch of superstars. You want to talk about that? Sure do.

With Chris Osgood and Chris Draper. And the neat thing is we have referee Wes McCauley who's going to work the game Wednesday night here against Buffalo. We don't have it. It's on TNT. So West Wes is going to stay over. The NHL was kind enough to give us referee Wes McCauley, and he's very animated. I don't know if you've ever seen Wes. Five minutes for fighting. He's just wonderful, and his dad was just a great referee, and Wes followed in his footsteps. So Wes McCauley and Dan O'Halloran, long-time referee, is now an NHL supervisor. And we got the refs involved because Mickey's always on the refs. Always. And I grew up refereeing. I put myself through college and bought my first car with money in Toronto when I was refereeing, so I have an affection. What do they think when they see Mickey? Do they get pissed or no? I go in and see him before the game. Tell Mick to go easy on us. You know, they love him. Mick always says, I'm not on the refs. I'm on the way that Toronto and New York and big Toronto and New York where the main offices are, the way they want the game called. Because Mick will say, that's not a hook, that's a crappy call. But the referees are being told to call what the mandate is from the league. So Mickey's not so much on them. They really love him. But, you know, the refs all get – they get the videos of the game sent to them. After the game, they miss a call or something happens, so they'll hear it. They know what we say, and they'll come back to me with comments. I try to go down every few games into the refs' room, and I shoot the crap with them before the game because I love them, and I know the tough job that they have. So I decided to get the refs involved with it.

That's cool. I like that. Some days I'll just start to cry, and it's a Jamie day, and his mom and my daughter Arlen will think the same way. But she's wonderful about it. We like to keep the good memories, and what we're doing now, that's all you can do. You sink or swim. You're saving lives in memory of your son.
