First of all, generally, when you walk into a room, especially on the first time, don't forget when you walk into an enclosed space, it's worse for that dog because it's either fight or flight in most cases. And then second of all, you should always definitely don't pat him behind the head, especially until you have some kind of established relationship or dominance over him. Otherwise, it's a concern for him because he can't see behind him. So that's why Shannon was right. And what you want to do is if you go in, never close in face, but you actually want to go down on your haunches or sort of down your knees and get to his level as you're tiring over him. So that's a perceived threat to him because he doesn't know who he is. But most importantly, it's the people around, it's the energy and the nervousness, and the more people are chattering and talking, dogs don't understand that. They just see that as commotion and craziness. So that's why they get nervous in that sort of environment.
