The little girl with the big story to tell.

00:01:46 - 00:01:56 | Speaker 7:

It's Mojo on the morning show. Kevin says that he would like to get his sister on for this next topic, right? Yes, please. Lydia, can you please call Kevin's sister's people?

00:01:56 - 00:01:58 | Speaker 8:

My G, my Doja.

00:01:58 - 00:02:06 | Speaker 7:

And see if she's available, if she's ready to go on the radio or if she'll go on the radio. I don't think, have we had her on the radio before?

00:02:06 - 00:02:52 | Speaker 8:

We have, in my almost two-year career, on the Great Mojo in the Morning Show, we have talked to Grandmama, we've talked to my mom. Obviously, we've talked to Joe and Sherelle has been here. I think you may have heard a journey cool here and there. We've talked to my dad, but. Matter of fact, your dad, one time we couldn't get him off the phone. I love when your dad calls. But we have not talked to probably outside of my mom and my grandfather, the person and Josiah, the person, the people that have, I guess, for lack of a better term, reared me or assisted me in becoming the person that I am today. My younger sister, Melinda, I don't talk enough about her. We have her to blame. She is my, yeah, she is my best friend. We're about three years apart. She's my younger sister.

00:02:52 - 00:02:53 | Speaker 7:

That's my dog.

00:02:53 - 00:02:56 | Speaker 8:

We've never had her on. We've never. I don't think we've ever talked to Lynn. That's crazy.

00:02:56 - 00:03:04 | Speaker 7:

And this morning, we're going to have her on so that Kevin can talk about how I had to work harder for it.

00:03:04 - 00:03:28 | Speaker 8:

Well, this was a real interesting conversation that my sister and I have had, but we had it more recent. And my sister truly feels that there was a difference in how my mother championed me and pushed me towards my dreams than she did my sister. Interesting. And my sister feels as though that she's had a different upbringing and a harder path to reaching her dreams than I've had.

00:03:28 - 00:03:33 | Speaker 7:

Okay, so this is like almost a little family therapy going on here right now. Does your mom know that we're doing this?

00:03:33 - 00:03:33 | Speaker 8:

No.

00:03:33 - 00:03:34 | Speaker 7:

Okay.

00:03:34 - 00:03:36 | Speaker 8:

So hold up.

00:03:37 - 00:03:42 | Speaker 7:

Please welcome Kevin's sister, Melinda, to the air of Mojo in the Morning. What's going on, Melinda? Hi.

00:03:43 - 00:03:49 | Speaker 2:

First time caller. Yay! That's good. That's good.

00:03:49 - 00:04:27 | Speaker 7:

and now it's it's you and kevin that's it just the two of you there's no other okay yeah so so you guys throughout your entire lives have you know and and i come from uh having six total so it's wild like there are some siblings i don't even talk to you know because i just haven't uh talked to them you guys talk to each other you gotta talk to them you i know i do you're right um uh one's wanted by the law so we're trying to figure that out is it you but i i find Found it really cute when Kev's first started working here that his daily routine was he would talk to you in the morning before the show would start, and then he still does that. I think that's wonderful.

00:04:28 - 00:04:32 | Speaker 4:

When he's woke enough to answer before he gets to work. Yeah.

00:04:33 - 00:04:42 | Speaker 7:

Now, so, Melinda, you feel like your mom gave Kevin a little bit more than what she gave you?

00:04:43 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 4:

Okay, I'm going to just give a little disclaimer. where my mom supports both of us. She doesn't champion one more than the other, but this is a valid feeling that I've had because I don't want her to feel like I don't like the way she raised me.

00:05:00 - 00:05:36 | Speaker 3:

Okay, so Kevin is obviously the firstborn. He's older. He's been in quote-unquote showbiz since he was like two years old. On top of that, he's a boy. And, you know, he's charismatic. People like him. He has like a lot of cool experiences and such. So I just feel like with him doing film and oratorical competitions, he was always kind of, like, pushed to the front. Like, let's see what Kevin wants to do. Although I do have experience, like, in commercials and things like that.

00:05:36 - 00:05:38 | Speaker 4:

Well, you've got a great singing voice, too.

00:05:38 - 00:05:57 | Speaker 3:

Yeah. Yeah, thank you. I really appreciate that. I mean, I just feel like it was, I don't know if it was because I was kind of like a plus-size kid that it was kind of like, let's just move forward with his career. But I feel like I could have gotten tagged in a lot more, you know? What? So, I mean, like, honestly, I mean.

00:05:57 - 00:06:32 | Speaker 4:

This is interesting because, you know, the first time I met you, Melinda, was at the baby reveal, the whatever. Gender reveal. Gender reveal. And it was interesting because I kind of witnessed a little bit of this. You are very quiet, reserved. And Chelsea and I both noticed that your mom just sits there and she does talk a lot about Kev. And I know that that was his event that day. but it is that is and i think that most kids who grow up in a house of you know a bunch more brothers and sisters you feel that way you might feel like your brother or sister got it better

00:06:32 - 00:06:53 | Speaker 3:

than you did yeah yeah and i mean honestly mojo i've been just kind of on a life path and my personality was a bit reserved just because of what i was dealing with i'm pretty charismatic but um yeah i mean she does hearts on kevin like jeez like i mean when i'm doing my thing she

00:06:53 - 00:06:58 | Speaker 4:

hearts on me but kevin is her boy oh jeez hold on a second hold on right this damn thing i keep it

00:06:58 - 00:07:04 | Speaker 2:

you're there still right melinda yeah okay good okay do you do you feel like that has affected

00:07:04 - 00:07:39 | Speaker 3:

our relationship no no no no no i'm not like harboring animosity like you get everything No, but I will say it's like we have two different experiences of our mom. Like you have a, I mean, I guess you'll never understand, but you have a different relationship with her. Her personality, how she talks to you, how she keeps it funky with you, how she disciplines you is completely different than I. She's even admitted to me that she's harder on me because I'm a girl.

00:07:39 - 00:07:41 | Speaker 4:

How do you feel when you hear that, Kev?

00:07:41 - 00:07:56 | Speaker 2:

because i'm looking at your face and i mean it's it's shocking and you know we've had conversations before but i mean she's right i only have the perspective of my experience and i don't of course i want to be empathetic but i i mean i i am a guy i don't know do you raise your children

00:07:56 - 00:08:34 | Speaker 1:

differently that's a different so here's my question as a mom and i'm also the oldest of three girls right so do you think that this is because of kevin's personality versus yours melinda or do you think that this is just simply and i say this because i notice i already do it where i will like dote on a lot of things related to lucy because she is my oldest so a lot of things are like first time or i want to make sure you know i i feel like i give her more of myself than sometimes i do for smith because i'm like second kid he'll figure it out he's going to be fine and i feel like that's a natural thing for parents do you think this is that or do you think

00:08:34 - 00:09:08 | Speaker 3:

that this is different i mean i feel like with your first child that's like your that's your experience with the parenthood so i guess maybe naturally you'll have a different inclination with them because it's like that's your partner in crying you know but i often feel like i mean especially kind of in the black community women mothers with their sons you know they're very close like a lot just a lot of times people may say like uh are you dating your mother you know like because they're so involved with it so i just feel like he puts him on the pedestal a bit

00:09:08 - 00:09:25 | Speaker 4:

so melinda do you do you ever do you ever feel like if you would have had the energy put into you because i know you want to you know have looked towards the entertainment business do you ever feel like if you would have been the first one born and the energy was put towards you

00:09:25 - 00:09:57 | Speaker 3:

that you would be in a different place well honestly my mom invested in me like i've done basically the same type of work as Kevin. I mean, like, I've done commercials. I have theater background, dance, such and such and such. I do feel like I could have been a Disney Channel star, though. I had an agent, but unfortunately, I told one director on a Wallside Windows commercial that it's breast pink, and they let me go. I know those guys.

00:09:58 - 00:09:58 | Speaker 1:

I can get you back in.

00:10:00 - 00:10:01 | Speaker 5:

Melinda, we'll make those dreams come true.

00:10:02 - 00:10:37 | Speaker 3:

Please. But no, I mean, like, no, I think the grand design played a big part in everything. I mean, just the fact that Kevin's on air with you guys. I've been doing the work. So, I mean, everything is just a part of the journey. It hasn't put me in a different position. I'm working on music. I'm doing everything. I have a nonprofit called Play Your Piano Detroit that kind of focuses on people with talent who don't really have an outlet. So we just use six degrees of separation and masterclasses and elevated experiences to push them to the core. Okay, that's amazing. It works.

00:10:37 - 00:11:02 | Speaker 1:

So for those just tuning in right now, this is Kevin's sister, Melinda. And we're talking about how Kevin might have had a little bit more doting on him than Melinda might have had. And she feels like her being raised was a little different than Kevin. And I think that a lot of people feel, I'm sure my kids feel that way. But Monica, are you there, Monica?

00:11:03 - 00:11:04 | Speaker 4:

Yes.

00:11:04 - 00:11:05 | Speaker 1:

I know you feel.

00:11:05 - 00:11:06 | Speaker 4:

First time, long time. Hey!

00:11:08 - 00:11:12 | Speaker 1:

I know you feel the same way that Melinda does about how you were raised, huh?

00:11:13 - 00:11:55 | Speaker 4:

Yeah. And so she commented on what I was going to say. I really think that it's just in the black community. I don't think it's about the order or how she looks. I think that black moms, they don't own their sons. they push their sons to be great like their relationship with their sons are like amazing and then they're harder on the girls I don't know what it is but I see it all throughout my family that's been my experience and I'm the oldest so it's like um I don't know I just feel like moms push their sons to be great no matter they do no wrong I don't get it it's like they don't do anything wrong and then we have all these dreams and aspirations and they support us but

00:11:55 - 00:12:12 | Speaker 1:

it's not the same yeah support um so i can relate monica and melinda do you guys uh ever get into uh conversations with like kev you know and melinda are talking about this do you ever get into conversations with the siblings and do the siblings ever go that's crap you know like do they

00:12:12 - 00:12:26 | Speaker 4:

ever try to discount it yeah he just did well yeah yeah well with my with my sibling i we go back and forth about you know he's the favorite and you know we joke about it but yeah yeah it's

00:12:26 - 00:12:53 | Speaker 1:

it is interesting uh that you guys both say in the black community this is the case because i would wonder if dads are different than the moms are like are they like my sister has a better relationship with my dad than i do really yeah well you're pretty you're you're tough on your dad i mean i think for good reason yeah yeah because you're you hold a lot of resentment towards the way you grew up?

00:12:53 - 00:13:06 | Speaker 2:

Resentment is just, I think I hold a lot of accountability. I'm sure there is some, I'm not going to hold myself accountable. There is a shade of resentment. But I don't think that if we're looking at the scales, that that one is all the way down, holding the most weight.

00:13:07 - 00:13:14 | Speaker 1:

No, I think that's, and actually I like that you changed that word because I think that it's good for a kid to also hold their parent accountable. Melissa, what's going on?

00:13:16 - 00:13:17 | Speaker 6:

Hey, Mojo, what's going on?

00:13:17 - 00:13:18 | Speaker 1:

Say hi to Melinda.

00:13:18 - 00:13:43 | Speaker 6:

hi melinda hi melissa you sound amazing by the way but i do want to i do want to say that i'm the youngest of three and my parents treated me like they learned from their mistakes i didn't get a first car i wasn't able to go out late like i got the crap end of the stick here interesting

00:13:44 - 00:13:47 | Speaker 1:

That's normally the opposite. Yeah, usually you forget.

00:13:48 - 00:13:59 | Speaker 6:

They're like, oh, you were out last night? We didn't even know we were gone. Yeah. And so I just feel like I lost out on a lot of high school experiences because of my sister and brother, what they did. Interesting.

00:14:00 - 00:14:08 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, it is true that sometimes the oldest, you go, oh, crap, what did I do? Now I'm going to clamp down a little bit and try to at least make one of them good.

00:14:09 - 00:14:10 | Speaker 6:

Yes, and I am.

00:14:10 - 00:14:15 | Speaker 1:

So thank you for the call. Appreciate it. What's up, Sam? How you doing?

00:14:16 - 00:14:59 | Speaker 5:

Hi, I just wanted to give Kevin and Melinda a little piece of advice that my mom always told me. There's just two of us. So it's just me and my little sister. My sister was always the bigger girl. She always got picked on her looks, her weight, the whole shebang. I was the golden child. I never did anything wrong, even though I have my closet full of skeletons that my mom probably doesn't know about. But what my mom always told me is that because we're our own unique individual people, she loves us both the same, but she loves us both differently. Yeah. Like, I got a first car. They bought me my first car. And my sister didn't really want to drive. She didn't care to drive. As long as I took her anywhere, she didn't need a car.

00:15:00 - 00:15:16 | Speaker 1:

and still to this day she kind of feels that same way so it's it's not necessarily about loving you unequally it's more so she loves you in different ways you're a boy you're a girl in that sense and and you're into different things yeah but that different kind of love can create

00:15:16 - 00:15:24 | Speaker 4:

an easier pathway and a more challenging pathway yeah i think it's interesting when kids will will

00:15:24 - 00:15:59 | Speaker 9:

say you know something to the effect of i know that they're their favorite or i know them and i think that there's obviously always going to be favoritism that might be shown but i also think that most parents just try to do the best they can and i know from your guys's mom i think your mom you know she had she did not have it easy uh i think you know uh her you know raising you guys without dad there for a while was very, very tough. And she's also very protective of you guys, but I also see that she's probably your fiercest protectors, both

00:15:59 - 00:16:00 | Speaker 10:

of you guys. Without a doubt.

00:16:01 - 00:16:05 | Speaker 9:

Yeah. And I think Melinda's way better looking than Kevin.

00:16:06 - 00:16:12 | Speaker 3:

I mean, I am going to be in my story in a few minutes if you guys want to follow me.

00:16:14 - 00:16:15 | Speaker 8:

Shout out your name.

00:16:15 - 00:16:32 | Speaker 11:

Yeah, how do we follow you? Melinda LeBeau. Melinda Lebeau is the same, same listener. So happy to be on here with you this morning. Wait, how do you spell that? M-A-L-I-N-D-A-L-E-B as in boy, E-A-U. Melinda Lebeau.

00:16:32 - 00:16:37 | Speaker 9:

Hey, what happens if Misfit Ron tries to flirt with Melinda?

00:16:37 - 00:16:41 | Speaker 10:

And Lynn can handle her own. That's a fact. Lynn can handle her own.

00:16:42 - 00:16:52 | Speaker 9:

I'm screaming. Melinda, you now have direct line to us. So anytime that your brother goes astray, we need somebody to put them in place because your mom gets shy sometimes and doesn't want to go on the air with us.

00:16:53 - 00:17:02 | Speaker 3:

Oh, that's funny. And Mojo, I just have to say, like, I've been listening to you for years. I mean, like, I'm familiar with Hot Girl Chicken. Oh, yeah.

00:17:02 - 00:17:05 | Speaker 9:

Back in the day, we tick-tack in those guys. Yeah. Yeah.

00:17:06 - 00:17:09 | Speaker 3:

I love, I love listening to you since I was a child.

00:17:09 - 00:17:11 | Speaker 9:

Thank you. I love you.

00:17:11 - 00:17:11 | Speaker 3:

You're welcome.

00:17:12 - 00:17:42 | Speaker 9:

I love you. And I love, and I love your family. I do love your family, so you guys are great people. I think it's one of the things that when I see the two of you guys together talking to each other, my sisters are very close to me. It reminds me of my relationship with my sisters, and I think that the thing with Melinda is Melinda, the things that you do to influence Kevin is how he's going to treat his wife, you know, one day. So you hold them accountable to be good to women.

00:17:42 - 00:17:46 | Speaker 10:

I love Melinda. Our relationship is probably the best that it's ever been.

00:17:47 - 00:17:47 | Speaker 9:

That's good.

00:17:47 - 00:17:51 | Speaker 10:

And we've had some struggles, but I love my land.

00:17:51 - 00:17:52 | Speaker 9:

All right. We'll talk to you guys later. See ya.

00:17:53 - 00:18:21 | Speaker 8:

This is the Bishop Statement at Bishop State Community College. We want you to hear what our students, educators, and business leaders have to say.

00:19:16 - 00:19:59 | Speaker 4:

My name is Metarica, Terry LaMille, and my major is general education. Some of the obstacles I have overcame at Bishop State is proving that I can show up consistently, even when my life was heavy. There are moments where I still feel overwhelmed by balancing work, leadership, parenting, and school, but Bishop reminded me that I'm capable of growth and not perfection, that I'm supported as long as I'm committed to being a better person than I was yesterday. My peers can depend on me. I'm there being poured into, but some of those students don't know that the faculty and staff are really there for them. So when they don't know that, I'm their resource that explains and shows them that...

00:20:00 - 00:20:00 | Speaker 2:

They're here to help us.
