This is the Bishop Statement at Bishop State Community College. We want you to hear what our students, educators, and business leaders have to say.

00:01:07 - 00:01:52 | Speaker 6:

My name is Patrick Pettway, and I am getting my Associates of Science and General Education with an emphasis in business administration. To me, it was a no-brainer. When you go out here and you're looking for funding to go back to college as a 40-year-old man, I got six people in my household. The extra money just doesn't just grow out of trees. For me to be able to be accepted through FAFSA and to have Bishop State pay for all of my tuition, not only that, but the curriculums, you know, they make it so easy to understand on their website. Like I said, I'm a 40-year-old man, so I don't use technology too much, but it was very understandable where I needed to go. It was extremely fast. These past two years, things have just moved in a total different type of way. It's like its own moving entity to see things manifest the way that they do.

All right, it is Mojo in the morning. This is the time of year where we got proms and graduations and all the rest of that stuff. I know that some schools are already even out, but Kev, what was topic there? I wanted to get a little prom talk.

00:02:31 - 00:02:51 | Speaker 7:

Big shout out to my cousin Amir. He's going to prom today. I'm excited for him. This is the first male cousin that I will be a part of, I guess, sending him off to prom. This is like a huge thing. And I feel like I need to have, quote unquote, the talk with him. Ooh. Or what is the talk that I'm supposed to have with him?

00:02:51 - 00:02:55 | Speaker 8:

Okay, so how old is he? A senior in high school? 17, 18, something like that.

00:02:56 - 00:02:57 | Speaker 5:

Are mom and dad around?

00:02:58 - 00:02:59 | Speaker 7:

Mom is around.

00:02:59 - 00:03:01 | Speaker 5:

Okay, and you don't think mom has had the talk?

00:03:01 - 00:03:14 | Speaker 7:

Yeah, but it's different when you have it from a cousin or just a guy. Or anybody, I guess, for that matter, than mom. Do you think he's the guy that should be doing the talk? What should we do? Yeah, I can't talk.

00:03:14 - 00:03:18 | Speaker 8:

You think Kevin? Kevin will be like, Kevin's got a new girl over all the time.

00:03:18 - 00:03:21 | Speaker 7:

You keep this narrative going, and it's not true.

00:03:21 - 00:03:24 | Speaker 8:

What is the talk? So give me the talk. Let me hear your talk. I don't know.

00:03:24 - 00:03:27 | Speaker 7:

That's what I'm asking. You got three boys. What did you tell them when they went to prom?

00:03:27 - 00:04:21 | Speaker 8:

Let me just, first off, well, big thing was, because my kids don't seem like the type of kids that can get laid, I talked to them about alcohol. I talked to them about alcohol. So I was big on that. And I told them, I said, you got your seconds away. You can see it from here. Home plate is right there. You're round and third. touch home plate before you do something to screw up at school. So I'm like, don't get yourself caught up in something that makes you get, uh, you know, unable to walk at your graduation. Um, you know, and I talked to him about alcohol and stuff like that. And then I talked to him about respectful to their dates, you know, make sure that their dates were, uh, were good. It's funny because I think out of all the kids, the one that I was most worried about was, uh, was Luke and yet I think at that point in my life I gave up

00:04:21 - 00:04:23 | Speaker 5:

third kid

00:04:23 - 00:04:43 | Speaker 8:

it was like that Luke was the one with the most game out of the three and Joe for some reason was the one I probably should have had the most talk to because I think Joe was the one that probably goofed around a little too much see this is good though, don't drink or drink but drink responsibly

00:04:43 - 00:04:44 | Speaker 7:

be respectful to your date

00:04:44 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 8:

what else did you say? Um, and that's the most important one to me. And if you, I mean, I lost my virginity on prom night, so I didn't go to prom, but I lost it on prom night. So I, so it was a girl that had gone to prom with another guy and then we all met up afterwards and did like.

00:05:00 - 00:05:45 | Speaker 3:

the after party and stuff and that was the night that i actually was able to complete the feat and uh and lose my virginity go you so yes and i didn't have to rent a tuxedo to do it which was the greatest so me and my buddies brian and brad yeager we were the losers that didn't go to we didn't go to our prom but it was the it was the we went to a catholic school the all-boy catholic school but the public school uh that was the one that we all had in our neighborhood had their prom and we all hung out with those guys we didn't uh really hang out with a lot of the guys that we went to school with but we drove around went to one of the parties and then that's where we ended up connecting at the after hours yeah yeah did you have a talk or like did anybody talk to your

00:05:45 - 00:06:05 | Speaker 4:

date at all for prom um doubtful I mean I never got the talk ever about anything and my junior prom I went with like my boyfriend who I'd been together with for years and years so there was no need for talk because everything had already happened I wasn't a drinker in high school I went to one party in high school and drank at that party and it was like the biggest deal in the

00:06:05 - 00:06:10 | Speaker 3:

whole world that I was even there and was drinking do you remember what you drank at that party

00:06:10 - 00:06:22 | Speaker 4:

vodka. It was. Yeah. Yeah. And it wasn't prom, but yeah, I was not, I was not a drinker. I didn't do drugs or anything. I, and then my senior year I went with like a friend and yeah, like we didn't

00:06:22 - 00:06:25 | Speaker 2:

need to get the talk. Do you give kids money before they go to prom? Like, did you give your

00:06:25 - 00:07:21 | Speaker 3:

boys money? Uh, Chelsea, I think, well, we paid for a lot of the stuff cause I mean their, their prom dinner was paid for and then they had their prom tickets that they had to do. So that was all paid for ahead of time and their stuff. I don't think we gave them, uh, money because I think what ended up happening so they had nobody these kids don't want limos anymore for some reason or they didn't my kids didn't want limos like i had the hookups here you know with top notch party bus limousines and stuff like that i had the hookups to do limos they didn't want to do it they wanted to just drive themselves and um i didn't like that idea you know because so we would what we did was we dropped i think joe we dropped his car off at the after party house so that the next morning he could come home but we said to him hey we know you're probably going to be drinking and if you are going to drink you're not getting in that car we will come and get you and pick you up like do not leave the next morning just to come home for sure because we were so worried about being drunk

00:07:21 - 00:07:41 | Speaker 4:

still that's that's your talk right there is there so i think kids have so many expectations for prom night and then you put them in a situation where all the other all these kids around them have these crazy expectations for prom night and it doesn't have to be that yeah when it comes to you know girls and drinking and after parties and whatever mike what'd you want to say

00:07:41 - 00:08:06 | Speaker 1:

i i think if you're having the talk and you're 18 years old something's wrong wait it's too late you're saying or what i i mean to each their own like you you do you live your life you know but 18 man by 18 years old you probably already know you should already know i I mean, the birds and the bees have been doing a lot of stuff before 18.

00:08:07 - 00:08:19 | Speaker 2:

Well, like Mojo just said, the whole part about drinking, like that part didn't even cross my mind to have a conversation with him. Like I think when you say those two words, the talk, it always comes to sex, but prom is way bigger than just that one act.

00:08:20 - 00:08:21 | Unknown:

You're right.

00:08:21 - 00:08:44 | Speaker 3:

I always worry, honestly, like this is one of the big fears that I have. I always worry, though, that you do the talk once or have like that conversation once and a refresher course needs to come into play. Basically, Mike, I think that you need to be able to say you could really screw something up or you can, you know, get yourself caught up into something that you'll never be able to rehearse.

00:08:44 - 00:08:47 | Speaker 4:

Don't let this be the pivot point where your whole life drastically changes.

00:08:48 - 00:08:50 | Speaker 3:

Like I remember saying this. Go ahead.

00:08:51 - 00:08:58 | Speaker 1:

In the refresher course, man, some of these kids can teach us some things. I know, that's true. There's some new stuff. I tell you.

00:08:58 - 00:09:36 | Speaker 3:

But here was the biggest thing with with Joe is I used to say to Joe all the time and I probably should have said it more so to even Jacob and Luke. I think I gave Jacob grace because I think that we we we knew in our gut that Jake was gay and he was going to prom with, you know, you know, one of his friends that was a girl and stuff like that. But also I probably should have had more conversation with him and just said to him, hey, you know, hey, just be careful, be, you know, behave yourself and stuff like that. But I think I was more trustworthy of him. But with Joe, I said, hey, you made it this far. You know what I mean? Like, I kept doing that whole thing. Like, you made it. I still do that with him.

00:09:36 - 00:09:36 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, don't F it up.

00:09:36 - 00:09:39 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, I still have that conversation. What's this kid like?

00:09:40 - 00:09:41 | Speaker 1:

Still beat teen pregnancy.

00:09:41 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. He's an amazing, I mean, he's got a full ride, 4.6 GPA. Oh, he, him, yes. Yeah, he's on it, but you still got to have these, you can't be, you can't think just because they're smart and that they seem like they're on the right path that they won't slip up and make a mistake. Yeah. At least that's how I think about it. He's still got to have these conversations.

00:10:00 - 00:10:45 | Speaker 8:

What kind of school does he go to right now? Does he go to a school where, you know. What school do you go to? I don't know, for real. Because I think that's one of the other things. Like, Luke went to other kids' proms, too. Like, he went to other schools' proms. And that was the other thing I would say to him is, you're the visiting kid going to the other kids' schools' proms. You have more likelihood there to either, you know, get yourself into trouble or be, you know, called out for something. or because you're a guest at their place or you'll get yourself in a situation where you'd be so bored you want to leave, you know, because you don't know anybody. So I'm like, I always worried about that. I don't know. We should, I should probably call Luke and just ask Luke, like, what would you say? Because he was, he's not that far out. You want to, he probably would say something.

00:10:45 - 00:10:50 | Speaker 9:

Kev, you're so good at this stuff though. I feel like you're such a good person. I probably would be like in the moment

00:10:50 - 00:10:58 | Speaker 8:

having that conversation, but I always like to get, you know, wisdom. Bree, what's up? It's Mojo in the morning. Kev's got to have the prom talk. What's going on?

00:10:58 - 00:11:03 | Speaker 2:

Good morning. I always say don't make permanent decisions on temporary feelings.

00:11:04 - 00:11:04 | Speaker 8:

Ooh.

00:11:04 - 00:11:11 | Speaker 2:

If that's in regards to drinking or whatever, just don't make permanent decisions on temporary feelings.

00:11:12 - 00:11:15 | Speaker 8:

That's a great line. I never thought about that. Are you a mom?

00:11:16 - 00:11:17 | Speaker 2:

No, I'm not.

00:11:17 - 00:11:19 | Speaker 8:

I was going to say, you sound young.

00:11:20 - 00:11:21 | Speaker 2:

I'm 32.

00:11:22 - 00:11:31 | Speaker 8:

Okay. No, that's a really good point. Some of the wisdom comes from people that aren't moms. I don't know. Hold on a second. Let's see if Luke will answer his phone.

00:11:31 - 00:11:32 | Speaker 9:

He is not awake.

00:11:32 - 00:11:35 | Speaker 8:

No, he works. He's got a summer internship job.

00:11:35 - 00:11:35 | Speaker 9:

Oh, that's right.

00:11:36 - 00:11:56 | Speaker 8:

That's right. This kid's like... Hello? Hey, Luke. What's up? Hey, Kev's cousin is going... Oh, I don't know. I'm coming back at myself. Kev's cousin's going to prom tonight. He's an 18-year-old kid. And Kev's got to do the talk with him, like the prom talk. You're not that far out of high school. What do you think Kev should say to him?

00:11:57 - 00:12:07 | Speaker 7:

No fooling around. No sneaking out. No doing any dumb stuff. No cops. And I don't know. Am I on the radio right now?

00:12:08 - 00:12:09 | Speaker 8:

Yeah. Where are you right now?

00:12:10 - 00:12:11 | Speaker 7:

I'm in the shower.

00:12:12 - 00:12:14 | Speaker 8:

You're actually taking a shower right now?

00:12:15 - 00:12:33 | Speaker 7:

I got to go. Yeah. I shower in the morning. I like to smell you. Yeah. Um, just, uh, you know, if he has sex, use a condom. Is he 18? He's 18. I think so, yeah. Yeah. All right, yeah. Yeah, okay. All right, can I go on?

00:12:34 - 00:12:34 | Speaker 8:

Oh, wait, wait.

00:12:34 - 00:12:35 | Speaker 9:

Can I go now?

00:12:36 - 00:12:38 | Speaker 7:

I have to, I'm in the shower.

00:12:38 - 00:12:40 | Speaker 9:

Can you hear the shower? Now I can hear the shower.

00:12:40 - 00:12:43 | Speaker 8:

Yeah, I can hear the water. All right, what are you washing right now? What part are you washing?

00:12:43 - 00:12:44 | Speaker 9:

Okay, stop. That's so weird.

00:12:48 - 00:12:54 | Speaker 8:

All right, all right, I love you. I love you. All right, talk to you. All right.

00:12:55 - 00:12:56 | Speaker 9:

Dude, he's hysterical.

00:12:57 - 00:12:58 | Speaker 8:

Hold on. Bill, what's up, Bill?

00:13:00 - 00:13:02 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, so I've got four sons.

00:13:02 - 00:13:08 | Speaker 8:

Oh, Jesus. I'm scared of you. Hold on. You've got a voice like my son, Luke. It's Bill Duke. What's going on, Bill?

00:13:08 - 00:13:30 | Speaker 4:

Yeah. So I've got four sons. I had to talk with the oldest one. And by the time I got to the second one, he had already had to talk with it. And it went down the line. The first one talked to the second one. The second one talked to the third one. and the third one talked to the youngest. So by the time I got around to the talk, they were like, yeah, Dad, well, see, your brother talked to you. My brother already told me.

00:13:31 - 00:13:34 | Speaker 9:

Okay, you win for the best voice ever.

00:13:34 - 00:13:40 | Speaker 8:

It's the bare necessity. Can we have number four talk to Kevin's cousin? He's singing.

00:13:40 - 00:13:41 | Speaker 9:

Oh, he's singing. That's what I'm saying.

00:13:41 - 00:13:42 | Speaker 8:

Go ahead, Bill. Keep going.

00:13:42 - 00:13:43 | Speaker 9:

Come on, Bill.

00:13:43 - 00:13:50 | Speaker 3:

It's the bare necessity. It's the simple bare necessity. Forget about it.

00:13:50 - 00:13:51 | Speaker 6:

That's crazy.

00:13:53 - 00:14:03 | Speaker 8:

I love it. Take care of yourself, buddy. Appreciate it. All right, guys. Have a good one. All right, bye. Bill, listen to that voice. You can tell that man's got four kids.

00:14:03 - 00:14:29 | Speaker 5:
