The World Cup is underway and it's been incredible. On our podcast, The Away End, with Daniel Alarcon and John Green, we're talking about the games that have delighted us, the teams that have inspired us, what we're loving, and what surprised us, all through the lens of being massive fans of the world's most beautiful game.

00:01:34 - 00:01:48 | Speaker 5:

Daniel, this tournament has been magical so far. There's so much to love, and I can hardly believe the drama that the group stage brought us. And now it's time for us to talk about the teams that are left as the field is whittled down to one World Cup champion on July 19th.

00:01:48 - 00:01:55 | Speaker 8:

all right it is the mojo in the morning show uh mojo and shannon megan kev kp lydia and zach good to be back uh good to have everybody here uh hope everybody had a good christmas got to spend uh time with all of my family although it was kind of a little bit disjointed because we spent some time with Jacob when we were having Christmas here in town. And then we left and went down and visited Joe and spent time with him. And it's weird when not all of you are there together on the same day and everybody is there together. We did have a good Thanksgiving together. And I know, Shannon, you said that it was kind of a tough one for you because on Christmas Eve, you saw your kids and then Christmas Day, you did not.

00:02:46 - 00:02:50 | Speaker 4:

First time ever. I didn't see my kids for even a minute on Christmas Day. Yeah, it was a tough one.

00:02:50 - 00:02:56 | Speaker 7:

So usually in the past, you guys would split time on each day or whatever? Or is that how it was?

00:02:57 - 00:03:20 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, it just changed for the first time this year just because of the way the holiday fell and families and plans. And so it was just easier for the kids to spend, to have our Christmas morning on Christmas eve morning and then that way they could be with their dad all day on christmas day and not be

00:03:20 - 00:04:23 | Speaker 7:

going back and forth all day so i always wondered uh if that i got friends that you know i've never been been divorced or been through a divorce as a kid but i always had friends that did it and i used to hate it because they their parent one parent did not live in our neighborhood and then they would have to leave and go over there and then one of my buddies his parents wouldn't let them bring their toys back and forth which oh that stinks it was crazy i've been here before too or clothes they couldn't bring clothes and they had mom's clothes and dad's clothes and dad's clothes were not as nice as mom's clothes i've been petty like that mom was buying nice clothes and dad was not buying nice clothes because dad wasn't giving a crap or he wasn't picking it out but um it's uh it sucks i uh i will say that uh something i never realized until we had our pre-show meeting we were talking today was uh Lydia's conversation that she had with us in the pre-show and I I want you to bring us to the air because I think there's a lot of people that are are just like you Lydia that think about a lot of things during the holidays and for those who

00:04:23 - 00:04:42 | Speaker 1:

don't know this uh Lydia are you an only child I am so I do have a half brother and a half sister however I didn't really grow up with them because they were my dad's kids and they were also very old i mean how much older are they so my brother's 40 and my sister's 45

00:04:42 - 00:04:50 | Speaker 4:

very okay and you don't you don't really have a relationship with your half sister right no not at all but you do have a relationship kind of with your half brother i have a really

00:04:50 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 1:

good relationship with him we just have nothing in common growing up at least i mean now we do because they were out of the house by the time you were right yeah and i feel like growing up

00:05:00 - 00:05:30 | Speaker 2:

older brother who's like 13 years older than you it's like what is there to talk about but now there's a little bit more in common and his wife loves taylor swift so okay yeah that's who you went with to the taylor swift uh concert yes however um we spent this christmas just me and my parents so my brother hung out with his wife's family and we didn't know what we were going to do this christmas we were thinking on christmas day we're like we'll just make a nice dinner and stay home. And then I thought, why not just go to Frankenmuth? So my family and I drove to

00:05:30 - 00:05:35 | Speaker 4:

Frankenmuth. And you say family, your mom and your dad. My mom and my dad. Yeah. Yeah. We drove to

00:05:35 - 00:06:19 | Speaker 2:

Frankenmuth. And as I was sitting there and we were talking, we got pretty deep. And I mentioned that I felt like my kids are going to grow up alone because if it's just the three of us on Christmases, now what happens when I have kids? It's like, they're not going to have any cousins on my side of the family and i feel like that sucks oh yeah because when i grew up without having siblings in the house i mean i feel like i have only child syndrome and i was pretty spoiled but i think it would have been nice to grow up with having like a sister or a brother that was around my age and i mean i'm obviously willing to give that to my kids if god allows me to do so however i don't think that they're gonna have any cousins to grow up with on my side which to me is

00:06:19 - 00:06:25 | Speaker 4:

kind of wild because most chaldean people that i know have like 8 000 cousins matter of fact

00:06:25 - 00:06:35 | Speaker 2:

many of them end up marrying or dating them i mean that's true i have a lot of cousins i mean my dad had like what he has like seven brothers and like four sisters yeah although i guess you

00:06:35 - 00:06:48 | Speaker 1:

could marry somebody who has brothers and sisters that have kids and so your kids would have cousins those all come from one side of the family just be on one side right right i don't think so you You would just have to have your mom and dad come to their Christmas. Yeah.

00:06:49 - 00:06:54 | Speaker 4:

What if we can get George to get a little frisky with Diana?

00:06:55 - 00:07:02 | Speaker 2:

Do you know when I would make a wish, I'd blow out a candle for a sibling? That's something I wanted. Did you? If you mention the wish, then you're not going to get it.

00:07:02 - 00:07:05 | Speaker 4:

Lady, you just got to have like six keys or something like that.

00:07:05 - 00:07:06 | Speaker 2:

I want six kids, actually.

00:07:06 - 00:07:08 | Speaker 4:

On a dot? Six on a dot?

00:07:08 - 00:07:11 | Speaker 2:

Yep, you got it right. I always wanted to be the Kris Jenner of my family.

00:07:11 - 00:07:45 | Speaker 4:

I have to tell you that we, you know, having grown up with six kids, I thought it was actually kind of a bad thing because there were so many of us that it made like Christmas feel like some of you were kind of, I was the baby, so I always got spoiled. But like my middle brother, he felt like he got, you know, dicked by my parents because they didn't get, you know, everything they wanted. I would think that you would be great because everybody's doting on just you. But then I think about that would be a boring Christmas. you watch one kid opening presents that's like all right that's it yeah half the fun is showing

00:07:45 - 00:08:47 | Speaker 3:

everybody what you got i'm surprised you say that and this actually makes me feel really bad for my dad because he was one of six and they had a ton of foster kids in and out of the house as well so at any time there are eight to ten kids in the house and um he always wanted a huge family he wanted six kids as well um and just didn't work out for him and his planning but um it always made me really sad because i see him almost act like a grandfather with my cousin's kids because we're all a super close family like lydia we're we're irish catholic so like there's a ton of us too i think i have 58 cousins um yeah there's a bunch of us there is a bunch of us and i think about my dad when he's around the little ones and knowing that my brother and i won't be giving him that experience of his own makes me incredibly sad and it makes me feel so guilty i won't it's not changing my mind but it does make me really sad come over to my house he would love it and he's great with kids yeah and he like he enjoys it and he's like it's so upsetting lydia we need

00:08:47 - 00:09:14 | Speaker 4:

to find lydia some secret family members or something like that like she needs to adopt some family i'm so good maybe this is why maybe this is why you become so attached to our breaking entering christmas wish families because you want to be around more people it kind of this is kind of uh people don't realize this during the break lydia goes out and takes some of the families out or some of the letter writers out and spends time with them past the wishes that we grant what's up

00:09:14 - 00:10:13 | Speaker 5:

liz incredible hi um so i wanted to mention that last year was kind of hard for me um so i found out that my mom had um lymphoma she had cancer um it was kind of hard for me because you don't think like your mom especially when you're growing up with her all your life thinking that she had cancer that was kind of hard for me and then I had my um husband right after I found out my mom had cancer my husband had a seizure so it was like back to back so last year Christmas was hard um this year um my mom is fine now she beat cancer whatever yay yay yes so it's nice and rewarding I have my mom um my husband on the other hand he had to work on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and I I had Christmas Eve off, but I had to work. christmas day so it was kind of like i feel like this whole year and last year was just such a mess so it felt very lonely some i feel wow well we're sorry that that's the case i i i felt like

00:10:13 - 00:10:23 | Speaker 1:

it didn't feel like the holidays for some reason didn't like i didn't feel like i don't know what the it was the weather or what it was but i felt like i feel like that and like i try to make the

00:10:23 - 00:10:49 | Speaker 5:

best for the kids as well like having my kids like you know and i'm like i've been a stay-at-home mom since I had my kids and now I'm working now like after like 10 years but it's still like having those little moments I try to make the best for them like you know what I mean like it's just they they see that you know what I mean even though dad's working or like if mom's working or if something's going on we always try to make the best for them you know yeah I mean that's the

00:10:49 - 00:11:15 | Speaker 1:

thing and a lot of people will say well if you're not around little little kids it doesn't feel like it's as fun Christmas I mean especially like my kids were like I didn't really get a lot of presents and chelsea does a ton for them but it's like their presents now are so much more expensive than their presents when they were kids you know i miss i do miss the days of kids opening just the freaking box and they're excited about the box naz hey good morning happy new year y'all

00:11:15 - 00:12:44 | Speaker 4:

yes good morning what's going on everyone had a beautiful holiday i relate to the last caller and I also relate to Lydia so on my side of the family it's just my aunt my mom died when I was little and then my dad died a while ago but he's a little but anyways my son's family it's just one person in myself but on my baby daddy side he's got a huge family and it's amazing and I look at my kids and they're excited to hang out with their cousins and they're excited to hang out with everybody and I feel like I offer nothing it is the most it is the strangest feeling and like when I was younger I worked every holiday I always I worked I was a nurse and I just I picked up I worked for everybody so they could spend time with their kids and then I didn't work and I just like it's lonely like no matter what you always have that internal loneliness like you're all you have this longing so like i feel this but i love everybody who has this going on and like i've hated christmas forever and my goal this year is to be i want to try to raise money for you guys for breaking and entering christmas i'm 42 my kids have like lemonade stands and that's what they want to donate their money to breaking and entering christmas that's incredible

00:12:44 - 00:13:24 | Speaker 1:

by the by the way we love you for doing that and i think that that is so awesome that this year was one of the best years we ever had on breaking entering christmas by the way the last christmas wish that we did for the single dad it went viral in a huge way and a lot of a lot of it made me realize that sometimes it's like a uh it's one of those stories that grabs onto you because you don't hear a lot about the single dads that are raising their kids um but but thank you any help that you can give uh mojos wish.org and just get in contact with us and we do it throughout the year it's not just at christmas time that we do breaking and entering i want to make sure lydia

00:13:24 - 00:13:56 | Speaker 3:

saves your phone number so that we can talk to you in december yeah hold on one sec what's up Alex hey first time long time yeah so um both me and my husband are only children and we haven't had any kids yet but we would like to in the future and I think it'll be interesting to kind of see how that goes my husband has a pretty big extended family and I also think family is more than just who you're blood related to. Yeah, that's true.

00:13:57 - 00:14:05 | Speaker 1:

That's wild, though, that you guys are both only children together. How does that work? Do you guys fight over everything with each other?

00:14:06 - 00:14:27 | Speaker 3:

No, I feel like once you grow up and you've lived a little bit, I mean, I think you just learn how to live with, like, your partner. I mean, I still have my parents growing up. It's not like they just let me do whatever I wanted. So I think it's a little bit different. but I think it's really not that different as some people think. Lydia, could you

00:14:27 - 00:14:29 | Speaker 1:

would you want to get with an only child or no?

00:14:29 - 00:14:43 | Speaker 2:

No, I'm too selfish. You want to have a big family that you can call? Because they're going to be selfish too. Oh, really? You know, with my space I can't share like there's certain things I just can't share and that's what being an only child has done to me. I mean in my own personal space.

00:14:43 - 00:14:47 | Speaker 1:

That's so funny because I don't see her as that Not at all. But that's interesting

00:14:47 - 00:14:54 | Speaker 2:

because maybe. Like sharing a room, sharing clothes ugh, all that sounds. I mean, you know you have to do that when you get married, right? Yeah. Okay.

00:14:55 - 00:15:00 | Speaker 1:

Poor bastard. But the whole idea of Lydia talking about this, Alex, is that she...

00:15:00 - 00:15:08 | Speaker 6:

She wants to go to Christmases with many people and not just a few people. Although it does make for getting good reservations if you go out on Christmas Eve.

00:15:09 - 00:15:21 | Speaker 1:

Not just that. What you don't think about is that if your parents want to spend Christmas with you, it's that you are fighting over the same holiday because you're both only children. Your parents really want to see you.

00:15:21 - 00:15:22 | Speaker 6:

Oh, wow.

00:15:22 - 00:15:23 | Speaker 1:

You guys got to do it.

00:15:23 - 00:15:25 | Speaker 3:

Hopefully everybody gets along and you just do it together.

00:15:25 - 00:15:27 | Speaker 6:

Do you guys do that or no?

00:15:27 - 00:15:37 | Speaker 1:

um we haven't done that yet just because we don't live super close to either side but i think in the future especially when we have kids that's going to have to be a conversation they got to come to

00:15:37 - 00:16:00 | Speaker 6:

you that is tough yeah that for us in our family with uh the having boys it's tough because we realize that the girls families are going to probably win out you know where the boys like the boys are you know never just go yeah i want to spend i want to be with my mom you know you You don't see that as much as you see the girls' families kind of being the family that they go to.

00:16:00 - 00:16:04 | Speaker 1:

Is it default girls, or is it just whoever has a better family that's easier to get along with?

00:16:04 - 00:16:12 | Speaker 6:

Well, that could be. Chelsea and I used to always say that the best person for our kids to date were orphans. We would like to date just somebody that has—

00:16:12 - 00:16:14 | Speaker 8:

Then you get them for every single holiday.

00:16:15 - 00:16:16 | Speaker 6:

Yeah, there you go.
