This is the Bishop Statement at Bishop State Community College. We want you to hear what our students, educators, and business leaders have to say.

My name is Neterica Terry LaMille, and my major is general education. Some of the obstacles I have overcame at Bishop State is proving that I can show up consistently, even when my life was heavy. There are moments where I still feel overwhelmed by balancing work, leadership, parenting, and school, but Bishop reminded me that I'm capable of growth and not perfection, that I'm supported as long as I'm committed to being a better person than I was yesterday. My peers can depend on me. I'm there being poured into, but some of those students don't know that the faculty and stuff are really there for them. So when they don't know that, I'm their resource that explain and show them that they're here to help us.

A couple of stories I want to get to. Shannon broke this story, the story about the Detroit woman, a rapper, who was calling for a lift and when she had the lift pull up in front of her house to give her a ride, the driver told her that she was too big to get into his car because he felt like she was too heavy to get into his car. By the way, the attorney for her, what was her name, by the way?

I hope I'm not saying it wrong. It's Dank DeMoss, I believe is how

Maybe this could be actually, you know, not only is she going to make a bajillion dollars from Lyft for a discriminatory case like this, which, by the way, Michigan has a law that we're one of the few states that has a law that talks about discriminatory behavior towards overweight people.

Well, it's illegal. I mean, the only way we can enforce these laws is through money-damaged lawsuits, whether you like it or not. I mean, it's illegal, and the goal is so you make an example and it doesn't happen to anybody else.

She calls for a Lyft to go to a family party, from what I'm understanding, right? And the Lyft is a Mercedes that comes and picks her up. It's a guy driving a Mercedes. So, obviously, you know, the guy's got himself a – it wasn't an SUV. It was one of their sedans. and he pulls up and when he sees her walk out of the home he sees that uh and i don't want to call her you know overweight because i'm an over i'm an overweight guy but people would describe me as being a bigger guy she's a bigger woman okay and he says this to her

wait a second you need to order a bigger car which by the way bigger cars ordered when you

have multiple passengers or lots of passengers you don't order bigger cars for a person's size

What makes you think I can't say?

in this car. My best friend has a disc that's nowhere than this that I can fit in. That's the same size. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. To be more specific with you, I got very tired.

What did he say? He said that his tires were tired.

What? I got to do with your tires. Yeah, and you have no space. How do you know I don't have no space? Yeah, I got no space in the back. How do you know I don't have no slaves. Because I try people. No, I don't never have to order an Uber XL.

So, John, obviously you guys have done the whole press conference thing. Have you heard from Lyft at all? Have their representatives contacted your client to apologize for this?

No, we haven't heard anything from Lyft. They haven't contacted us. they did send some type of instagram message to my client and asked her to contact them obviously we we told her not to do that we'll talk to them we're waiting to hear from them and would love to hear their uh explanation what about an apology from the driver did this yeah nothing we haven't heard any apology from the driver we have his first name because you know on these list apps it doesn't show the whole person's name but right we have the driver's first name, so we're going to be able to identify him once we get the records from Lyft.

That's good. I'd love to know what this driver's record is with Lyft. How long has this man been a Lyft driver to do something like he did? Obviously, Lyft has to be responsible for who represents them, no doubt, but this guy sounds like this guy's not a very smart man. Not a very

good representative of the company.

How much money are we suing for? I hope it's like $28 billion. What kind of money are we suing for? What are we suing for?

That's not up to me. It's up to a jury of Wayne County. You know, but we need that. Lyft is a multi-billion dollar company. It needs to be enough money that it'll deter them and maybe make some policy changes. You know, weight discrimination actually is legal in most states. Michigan and New York are, I think, the two states where it is illegal. But in a lot of states, it's perfectly legal to discriminate against people and fat shame them.

And hopefully that's something that comes out of this case. Every state, it should be illegal to body shame individuals. It shouldn't be legal anywhere.

Yeah. I don't know how it's legal. To me, it's amazing.

John, I don't know if there was any kind of relationship that you had with your client, but when you had a chance for the very first time to talk to her about this, how is she doing? How is she holding up with this whole thing? Because she handled herself great in that audio.

Yeah, I mean, she's upset. I mean, but, and she just feels sad about it, you know? And, I mean, we're lucky in this situation that she was just going to another friend's party. I mean, imagine if it was cold outside and she was stranded or a car broke down or, you know, she was outside of a bar at 3 in the morning or she was in a bad area. I mean, it could have endangered her life. And the real sad thing is this stuff happens more than you think. You know, we've had a lot of cases where we'll have people with disabilities who are blind and have seeing eye dogs, and the lift will not allow them in with the dog and will drive away and leaving a blind person on the side of the road. So, I mean, that's why we have these laws. And, you know, in a way, she's lucky that, you know, she didn't get hurt. uh but but something's got to change and it's illegal what they did that's right man um which

by the way we we talk about lifts and ubers all the time and you'll see like six people pile into an uber and nobody ever goes oh wow that's a weight limit but as soon as you see a big person you're like well i think it's fine that she didn't get allowed into the car like it's so crazy how we treat people who are overweight in such a discriminatory discriminatory way

on a regular basis that my heart breaks for her yeah and listen this also i'm sure happens for people's skin color and i'm sure this happens for people's uh you know we've always heard discrimination in many many different cases where people are discriminatory towards a person maybe even honestly how they smell i mean for god's sakes but this is this is something if you are the person that is offering up the services you've got to be willing to supply the services and what you just brought up is something i didn't even think about when this was going on what if this was middle of the night she's coming out of a club or where wherever and it's a safety issue you know thank god that she wasn't in one of those situations you know

know um john marco we're going to keep on top of this case and will you do us a favor i know that lydia's you know got some information from you will you let us know when as soon as you hear that lift is actually given any kind of a comment on this i would love an update absolutely absolutely

and i will keep you guys and your listeners informed and hopefully we'll make some good changes here and make sure that everybody has uh equal right to transportation here in michigan

That's the thing. It sucks, but it takes something as egregious as this man's actions to create change. And often that's what creates change. It's something horrific that has to take place. But somebody's sacrifice, hopefully, will provide everybody else the ability to live a happier life.

And she needs to get paid.

In high school, I did it since my sophomore year, and I kind of wanted to continue it. It was the only thing I was good at. I didn't want to move to a four-year yet. I don't think I was mentally prepared. I found Bishop State. They had the program. I met a few people there. I ended up enrolling. The instructor, first day I met him, I told him about my background. He said, okay, great, you know about this. He built me straight to work. He didn't let me have any leeway. He pushed me to my limits. So I think that made me choose drafting design at Bishop State and stuck with it. The sport's amazing. All my instructors just want to see me succeed. They want to push me to my limit. They want to see me be the best I can be. get a job, just be as successful as I can be. And I really appreciate all of them. With my degree, as of right now, my plan is to work for the city of Mobile with their urban planning department. And I've already got a job shadow before, and hopefully I will end the ship over the summer. If you choose Bishop, we're welcome to have you any day.
