It was on Saturday and i'm really grateful that uh there was so much going on downtown this weekend it was packed with people man there was a a red wings game and then uh steve martin and martin short were performing i believe they were at the fox there's another comedian i forget his name off the top of my head he's on that bff podcast um that was at the fillmore and like there were just a ton of people near Grand Circus Park and I was out walking my dog and we were on like a really long walk thank god I just needed to get out of my apartment for a little bit and there were people everywhere and kind of over by Grand Circus Park area there's a lot of people that just kind of stand around and hang out near that statue I don't know what that statue is but there's always people just like hanging out over there playing music whatever and nine or ten interactions out of ten because this is like the first time it's ever happened the people there are like they shout out and they talk to you nicest guys in the entire world like the funniest people ever and i i love walking over there which is why i specifically went to that area and there was going to be people and it was just a fun space to be in well i'm walking my dog and this guy uh starts walking next to me and i'm a little bit like no i have an italian greyhound so it's a greyhound shrunk down to a little space but she likes to move when we walk it is a fast-paced walk we are not strolling and taking our time we are moving so i know if somebody's matching my pace like you're putting an effort to keep up with me that's not like a normal walking pace and this guy starts coming next to me and he goes what kind of a dog is that i get kind of nervous because my dog is kind of rare and we've heard about dog nappings a lot lately with like frenchies Amen.

and stuff my dog breed gets stolen too so i don't love talking about her usually i'll lie and be like she's a miniature pincher or something um and then people always ask me like how much did that dog cost and that makes me uncomfortable because now you're trying to size up is this worth stealing and so he's following me around and then he goes do you live down here and i was like no and he goes what's your name and i go hillary i'm just lying my ass off to this guy well my dog starts pulling towards the park to go to the bathroom so i'm like cool i'm going to take her in she's got to go potty we'll go back to my apartment i'll try to ditch this guy and i'm thinking if i just like quickly turn into this park it's going to be either really obvious that he's following me or not obvious or like maybe he's just going on his way and this is a weird coincidence and i like go to the right go into the park and he follows me and then stands next to me while the dog is trying to go to the bathroom wow and i now go like red alert this is not great. He's following me around. He's staying next to me. He's trying to ask me personal questions and I'm uncomfortable, but thankfully I'm in a super populated area. So I'm not like alone with this guy. There's people everywhere. Now I'm trying to lock eyes with people and it's Saturday night downtown. Nobody's trying to get stopped by a stranger. Everybody's on their way to do something and nobody's looking at me. Nobody's making eye contact. Nobody's anything. and I went oh I think my dog needs to run and I just bolt off with my dog and I cut into a store and this store was like you can't have dogs in here and I was like there's a guy following me and the guy was like just stand by the door and he totally let me wait there for a few minutes until I couldn't see this guy anymore but it was it was crazy it was the first time I've been living downtown now for over a year this is a first time that I've ever been like I'm uncomfortable i've never once felt unsafe i have never once felt like i was being followed and this was the first time where i was like that made me really uncomfortable

did you think about calling uh calling like uh the the police and try to to to describe them or

to say what's going on no thankfully i think if i would have turned around there was a ton of police in front of the fox and the film war okay because they were like directing security and stuff so i

I wonder if he would have followed you if he saw those cops there.

Maybe, because there were so many people you can say, I wasn't following her, I was just walking this direction. It was kind of weird like that, but I have an app on my phone that I just canceled a week ago.

know this is a really scary thing um it's scary to think that you're being followed and i always feel like you know that sometimes it's like oh come on you can discount it and say well the person just driving where I'm driving or walking where I'm walking but for this guy to purposely walk up and start talking to you and do that and I know it's weird that nowadays you can't even just like have a conversation with somebody but if you're making somebody feel uncomfortable you almost need to be able to say to be able to say say listen I'm not really comfortable with you talking to me i wonder you know and because i think there are times where guys will even women do this sometimes to guys um or to other women they'll like come up and get like too much in your space

especially at night i don't want to anger a man who already has boundary issues i was just gonna

used to make fun of one of chelsea's friends who carried on her keychain a thing of mace i'm going to tell you something i don't make fun of that anymore nowadays because everybody's so you know crazy these days and i always feel like man i would have that freaking thing in my hand

was the last two events that i went to at lca it was confiscated at the door really yes the mace Yeah. So they'll take it pretty much any door person who's like going. They don't want it inside. They don't want it inside. They take it from you.

But going on those walks, it's almost like that needs to be there with your doggie duty bags.

I don't like that. Because getting to and from LCA can be kind of scary.

So I actually had the same thing happen to me last night as Megan. I was out walking my dog.

And this gentleman in the car claimed he was an Uber Eats delivery guy. But he was following like 10 feet behind me in the car, asked me what my name was, what kind of dog I had. Thankfully, I had a pepper spray on my key chain. And I just started screaming. Wow. What did he do? He ended up just driving away. I just started screaming. so hopefully like someone in my apartment complex would hear me uh obviously no one came out to help but um yeah he ended up just driving away but it was very very scary yeah i worry about the

bystander effect with that where everybody assumes somebody else is going to help so nobody helps

well it's what we hear when we get car alarms going off in parking lots right yeah everybody i mean i feel like the one thing that does not ever work is the car alarm beeping it just becomes the annoying thing that's beeping in the parking lot. C, what's up?

What's going on? This is C. I called a couple months back. This is a guy in love with the police officer. So I'm kind of irritated by this story.

I called a couple months back. I was the guy in love with Megan. And so this story kind of irritates me. So I'm a police officer. So we're going to have high alert. Yeah, we're going to have high alert around wherever Megan is. She's going to get personal security.

Where are you, a police officer?

Okay. All right. Well, then, what do you suggest people do? Like, what do you do in a case where somebody's following you?

Here is my suggestion, right, Mojo? What's up, guys? What's up, Kev? What up, though? What up, though? Here's my suggestion. So, it sounds crazy, but in a matter of life and death, every second counts, right? There are people who died because every second counts and you didn't have time to save them or you hesitated. So my suggestion, one of them would be when you're going out for a stroll, take your PIN number or your lock off of your phone. Because while you're walking, you may not have time to dial 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. As a PIN code, you can just dial 911. It's quicker, right? You can also use the buttons on the sides of your phone, though, to dial instantly.

With the alert push. I never know which one's to push. What do you push? You can do what?

You just push them a bunch of times. In the midst of pandemonium, your mind is all over the place. So you may not even be able to do it. You may be hitting volume up saying, oh, my God, I'm calling 911 because the brain doesn't work well under stress if you're not able to control it. And something like that, when you're being followed, take the pen off your phone, make sure you're not on your phone. And then they're actually coming up with the app. That was the reason I called. They're coming up with the app, how a lot of women can do two things at once. Like she's talking to you and texting her homegirl. She can say something like, hey, I'll be there at 8. And it'll also show up to the police and let them get your location. The only thing is, the danger in it is they're going to have your location. Does that make sense?

Well, I, oh, the person is? What do you mean?

Who's going to have the police officers?

Well, that's good for them to have it. Yeah, you want them to have it. Megan's already got an app. What's the app called, Megan?

Noonlight. N-O-O-N, like noon. Right, right. That's out. Yep.

I mean, that sounds like a good one. Listen, I will say this to you, that I think that what you did was right going into a business, because I think going into that business was more alerting. Even the guy saying, hey, you can't bring dogs in here. You saying that to him, and the fact that you walked in with a dog, thank God that he didn't get pissy at all.

No, he was great afterwards. Totally great. I'm very, very grateful to him.

So I just had a similar situation yesterday. I am a runner, and usually I run with my husband, but he's out of town, so I was running by myself. And whenever I run by myself, I always run lead roads, and I carry a blade with me, a siren. I'm, like, paranoid. I don't run with any earbuds or anything. And, of course, yesterday I get a weird feeling about this guy in a car. And, of course, as I pass him, he, like, starts yelling vulgarities out his window. So it's scary. It's scary being a female, like, alone anywhere. Even, like, I live in a very safe, small town. You can't trust anybody.

Wait, what do you, you have a blade. What do you mean by that?

Is it the ring? The ring that you wear? Yeah, yeah, it's the ring. That's so smart. If someone were to come up to me, like, it's protected on my finger, but if someone were to come up to me. you know start fighting back yeah yeah yeah wow it's scary i mean it's really scary and also guys become aware of when you're talking i mean honestly like public places where there's not a lot of people around that's the only person it's probably not a great place to go and meet somebody i don't know it's it's sad that our society has become that but it's honestly been that for a while and you hear these stories all the time um thank you for the uh the call i appreciate it do you remember uh ellen our old producer ellen oh her this weekend when she told she yeah i saw that she was in town when she told the story about, she called her mom and her mom was like, I'm busy or something like that. And she told the story, she was like walking in Royal Oak and this guy was

following her. Remember that? Oh, I do remember this story.

And her mom was like, yeah, I'm busy right now. But it's like, it's scary to call, you know, what's her mom going to do? Her mom was living in Buffalo. It's like, she's so far away. You almost, that app is such a good thing to have to be able to alert people.
