I have no idea why this bed came up as my out of this is actually kind of appropriate, though. This is good because in studio with us right now is a very funny man, but also a personal friend of personal friends. You know, you get those calls from time to time. And then you realize I'm making good for those Lions tickets that I gave you. I'm like, all right, well, you know what? I did have some good Lions tickets, so those are actually good. He is a very funny guy, national superstar. comedian mike young is in the studio with us mike has toured with every the likes of chappelle and rogan and uh sebastian and uh bob saget back in the day god rest his soul um but uh you now have put everything together in movie form and now have a movie called stealing jokes which is premiering at the imagine theater you're going to be doing a premiere at the birmingham eight theater yes i'm excited that's how and nervous first off i have to ask you this question as a local guy growing up in this area and obviously making it in comedy and you've done played every comedy uh place here in town yes but to know that you're putting a movie together and then probably the movie theater that you used to go and see movies with your friends growing up it is a full circle crazy moment yeah i mean i grew up in southfield so we did a lot more in southfield Star Southfield had the best nachos ever at a movie theater

I used to eat nachos at that place it's still standing it was the last time they ever used real cheese on a nacho that was the last place

Exactly.

Yeah, before they got us that string cheese or whatever that cheese was. But, yeah, man, it feels great. You know, I'm super grateful to be back here. We shot Stealing Jokes in Detroit. Where? I mean, we shot it all over, downtown, Riverfront. We shot some scenes in the OCM building at Campus Martius. Yeah, so we kept it all Detroit-centric. And it's just a fun movie. It's my fourth film, but it's my most fun movie. And as a comedian, you know, we travel the country and every comedian from Chris Rock to Bill Burr has a story about getting stiffed at a comedy club. And so in my mind, and I opened for Chappelle and I used to kind of like count the room and go, man, Dave's probably getting $100,000. I'm getting $500. And in my little hood mind, I was like, I got to make a movie about robbing a comedy club because every comic has been stiffed on his money. Everyone's been told, I got your money, we'll pay you Monday. For some reason, comedians, even though we feel like we're doing God's work here, making people laugh, they are looked upon as like, we'll pay you later.

We've been like the lowest rung. If you called the cops and told them Mark Ridley, who, by the way, is not the guy that will not pay you. Mark Ridley, right? Mark Pace. He's paid.

We had one discrepancy once.

We're good now. But if you called the Royal Oak police and said, Mark Ridley owes me money, the guy, they would look at you, you'd have your hat on backwards going, what the hell's going on? I'd look bad.

Yeah. But no, this is the comics, you know, themselves, they take it upon themselves. They don't go to the police. They get stiffed at a club. They get bumped by like a superstar. The guy decides not to pay him on a big night and things go awry and they end up sort of accidentally robbing the club and Michael Rappaport, he's the club owner. So he's a gangster club owner. What a perfect guy to have to do that. Yeah, and he's hilarious. And so he's like, you need to get me my money back. And so they go on this crazy journey and, you know, eventually got to get him his money back.

Here's the funny thing. This is wild about Mike. Mike was able to convince Dan Gilbert, who I know has got some deep pockets, but to give money up to him to produce this movie. How do you do that? So Dan's actually one of your...

Dan is my producing partner on this. Yeah.

Stop.

Well, because Dan is... Well, first of all, he's a hilarious... i don't know if people know but dan's actually super funny and he's he loves comedy and so i was making this movie i was getting ready to make this movie in la no joke and i was going down the line with one of these shady la producers and i wasn't having a good time and this guy was just cutting every corner and i called dan who had hired me to write a movie called adam 10 years back and i said hey man if you still want to make movies in detroit i have this script i'm having a bad time in LA I'll bring the whole thing to Detroit he goes send me the script I send the script and a week later I'm not kidding I get a text message basically which was like basically my deal memo on a text 50% in I'm up I'm all in on the money if I'm first money out so I think so I'm thinking that he thinks that I'm somebody else I'm thinking maybe he thinks I'm a shoe company maybe I'm a real estate investor I'm like there's no way that I'm getting to make this movie and he's all in and it turned out that he was he was totally that's great and we made the deal and we got to come back to detroit and you know i casted it with some real comedians that can act yeah jeff dieh haha davis who's a detroit guy shout out haha he kills it he's literally he

lights it up in this movie does everybody want to be in a movie like this because they've had that experience of getting stiffed by a comedy club it's so funny i've been in radio for a long time and back way back when on this show but also on the shows that I did in other markets I loved having comedians and like to me it was the greatest thing every time I would have a comedian and the comedy club guy would show up here and you'd be there doing your thing and I'd talk to the comedian afterwards and I could sense something was going on and one time I actually asked uh it might have been Kathleen Madigan or something like that and I asked the question I go man everybody seems so like weird and they go yeah that guy's an you know tell me the stories I'm like, I never realized this. Comedy club owners are a little shady. They can be. There's a couple good owners, but there's like a whole shady vibe going on. Craig Gass told me a story one time about the guy. It was a guy, and it wasn't local, but it was like Cleveland or something like that. But the guy owed him money, and Craig had to go to his driveway every single day. Like it was a mafia kind of thing.

This has happened. To your point, every comic I asked to do a little testimonial. So it's obviously a real movie, but I thought it'd be cool to have a bunch of comedians within the movie give little mini testimonials kind of throughout the movie. And so Sebastian's in it and Paul Verzi. So everybody I asked had a little mini story about getting stiffed at a comedy club. And I was going to say Sebastian's, you know, he kicks off the movie with this ridiculous story that really happened.

where he's like, they tried to pay me with a check that was made out of cardboard.

He goes, I felt it.

It didn't even feel real. He goes, and the edges, he goes, they didn't even try to use a scissors. He goes, I took it to the bank, and the bank goes, this is fraud. He goes, yeah, I know. I was just trying to make sure. He goes, I got scammed. And so everybody, I mean, Paul Verzi had a story where they tried to pay him in vintage coins because they had no cash. Every comic has had a story about getting stiff. And so this is like my ode to any artist who's ever been stiff. To any artist that felt like they were like putting everything into something, getting stiffed. And I was like, I got to make this movie. And that's, we got it made. The movie's tomorrow, right? The screening's tomorrow? Screening's tomorrow at the Imagine. And it's not just a screening, right? No, it's like an event. we're doing comedy there myself so luke null who plays this kid donnie hefner he's like a youtube star that stole a joke and got famous he's gonna do some comedy before the movie and this kid's like i had matt rife auditioned and again and this kid luke null who was on snl for one year i had never heard of him i'd never seen him before i'm like dude i don't know who you are you got the part period he was next level funny and so he's performing dustin ibarra who's in a bunch of movies. He's doing a show. That's great. And then I'll do a little comedy. And so we're going to just do some comedy, show the movie, have an event. And we're also giving money to NF, which is one of Dan's charities. And so it's a charity event, which is, listen, it's funny, because I can't charge my crew and my cast who are coming, but public, anyone can come and give and donate if they want, and we're just going to fill the house and have a fun night.

We all know Dan and Jen lost Nick to NF. And Nick, man, he'll be there with you in spirit. He loved comedy.

Bro, Nick was one of the funniest dudes ever. I hooked Nick up. I almost got banned from the comedy store because of Nick. Nick's 20 years old. He's not of age to go to a comedy club. But I'm just, like, doing a favor. And he's like, you got to get me into the comedy store. Me and my boys are coming. So I make a call to the manager of the comedy store. I don't tell him who it is. I just say my buddy's son. I lie. I say they're all 21. Meanwhile, Nick was famous already from picking the lottery pick on television. The club manager at the comedy store is from Cleveland. And he hits me up. He goes, Mike, if you ever try to get underage kids in here again, you'll never perform at the comedy store. And they also sat in the front row and they all looked about 11 years old. And the first comedian that came out is Joe Rogan. And Joe Rogan looks down and he goes, what are you guys, nine years old? And he buried them. And Nick probably loved every second of it It was like a highlight of his year for sure
