Baby's due in June, and this is the first time, and I know you're just talking about the company. Big shout-out to the company who added paternity leave to our – something we were able to do within the last few years. It's never been a thing here, and I don't know if it's a thing everywhere else. Usually, you just take time off and – And that is paternity leave. Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

And, um, and obviously I think maternity leave should be mandatory everywhere, but that's a, that's a whole nother thing. But so I decided this year, you know what, I'm going to take some time off to, to spend time with the baby since we, we, I have that time now. I've never had it before in the past. So I've been talking to people about it and I brought it up here and everybody here was just like, you know, we've never seen anybody do any, like do it. So we got, I had to call HR and all this other stuff, but I started talking to other people about it too. And the side eyes that I got, they're like, you're really going to do that? Comments. Really? Yeah. From like, from coworkers? No, nobody here has been, everybody here has been kind of like, I don't know. I've never seen anybody actually do it. I think it's amazing. It is.

It's unbelievable that in 2023, people still have such a weird stigma attached to that. It's great.

So it's like I was supposed to feel bad. Who are you getting side eyes from? Well, I told some friends, but I also told like, we were talking ellie and i were talking to like this couple the other night and and we were talking about the baby and and they were like he's like you're really gonna take time off he's like i took a couple days you'll be fine get back to work and he started making like jokes about it and i was like laughing and i laughed it off or whatever but like he was like serious like it's it's not common still for dads to to take you know an extended amount of time off and i'm not taking weeks and weeks and weeks but i still feel the guilt of like maybe i should be going back to work maybe i shouldn't be taking time off like it's not normal still and it should be yeah yeah

absolutely i mean i can remember when when lou and smith were born and i was so lucky because andrew was a business owner so he was able to take off you know whatever time he wanted and i think he stayed home with a week or stayed home for about a week to help me but i was grateful for that week and and you know because he could help all night as well and not wake up exhausted in

the morning and go to work see chelsea didn't everybody was just so thankful chelsea wanted me she wanted you out of the house chelsea wanted her knee grandmaternity leave she wanted grandma there yeah so so luckily grandma was able because she's a grandma does uh hair for a living and so grandma was able to take uh take a week off she wanted me as far as because here's the thing mike if you take paternity leave off you gotta help her you can't be playing video games in the basement

well see here's the thing is i have the ability to if like she could go back to work because she doesn't have technically she doesn't have maternity leave so she's gonna take time off either way like a couple months i believe and then i could come in and take a like if i wanted to i'm not going to but i could take six weeks off that's how much we have as a primary wow i didn't realize that that paternity leave was that much uh it's not it's not if you're a secondary provider it's only two weeks which is probably what i'll do but if she goes back to work and i go home i'm technically the primary care provider so i could take six weeks but you know the amount of looks i would get you know the amount of like hey we have to you know we have to fill people in here because we don't i couldn't take six weeks off here there's no way well so sad people think it's a

vacation it's like you don't understand what it takes to raise a brand new newborn while having two other little kids running around at the

ages that they are. I want to know, though, from some of the moms, if your guy did take a paternity leave, did he always help, though? Because if he doesn't wake up in the middle of the night to, like, help do a feeding or, you know, if he's, like, just

not helping with changing diapers or

But part of the stigma is immediately assuming that guys are going to take a vacation and not do anything, you know, and that's the problem. And you don't think that that

Every situation, there will be people to abuse it, but it's not the norm. When Natalie was born, thank God you and my bosses at the time were very understanding and afforded me the chance to stay home a little longer than I needed to because their mother, Chris, had horrible traumatic childbirth, and she had to recover. So I was the one that had to take care of the newborn for the first couple weeks, and she was bedridden. So it was a great situation that my workplace was understanding. And a lot of people aren't that way.

I'm a medical assistant. I don't get maternity leave at all.

time important yeah i work full-time i work anywhere from 40 to 48 hours a week i mean i i definitely put in my hours you know what i mean but if i want any sort of pay i have to use my vacation time so right now i'm i'm doing whatever i can trying to save up at least three months worth of like car payments car insurance utilities groceries i gotta we're really planning ahead for this because my husband um he doesn't get paternity leave and i i wish he'd get at least you know like a week or two just to help out it would be so wonderful yeah but i i really think it's great that um companies offer that for the men it's it's really helpful for us women who you know what if you know you have a complication during your labor and you really do need that help it makes a difference to the women out there who truly need that help and it's sad that america

is so far behind lagging in maternity and paternity against so many other nations we're supposed to be a leading industrial nation. And yet there's third world countries that have better plans in place for new parents than we do. Thanks, Steph. What's going on, Quinn?

Hi, I worked in the private sector. I worked at a private local hospital here in Detroit and it was just 12 weeks of unpaid. And then I started working for the government. I work at the VA now and women get a year paid off. And then men get 12 weeks paid.

Quinn, it's amazing you just said that you're in the medical field. The last caller was in the medical field, and they both had some of the worst plans for parents that are coming back for childbirth.

But you're working for the government, and it changes it.

Oh, it changes everything. I also work contingent at a local clinic, and they don't offer any type of FMLA. So if you work at a private health clinic, FMLA is expensive to small businesses, and so a lot of them can't afford it.

Right. And even FMLA, like it's just 12 weeks of unpaid. So it just protects your job. Right. Right. Right. Or like I had to take short term disability, which blows my mind that they consider childbirth a quote unquote disability. Right. And you had to pay for that coverage to pay into it. good morning guys morning um i just want to say mike i'm so glad that you're doing that and more fathers should be doing that because especially with three kids um my boss is he's taking two weeks off to be with his wife and they have uh their second child coming i think every father

should because they should be there for their yeah you're cutting out there but yes yeah not

only to help but it helps the father to bond with the baby too mike will you be taking time off in

the beginning or because you said that ally doesn't have it so are you going to try to do it towards towards the time that ally has to go back um well that's the thing is with the paternity

leave if once you start it it starts so if i took a week and then tried to come back to work it's done like i have to take it all at once okay so i i don't know it's up in the air right now if i take it in the beginning it's a great time to bond and help Allie but then I don't she doesn't like when the kids go back to like daycare and school there's uh we have to send them to a day care rather than me being there for the next couple weeks and then school starting and Ceci can go back to school and it kind of works out that way so it's kind of up in the air right now
