All right. Before we get to our topics for the second half of the show, can I give a quick thank you to somebody can i thank uh the fact that uh wdiv like promoted the show for like the last four days non-stop on one of their busiest nights of the year and they did the they ran the interview that i did with uh christy mcdonald the uh incredible friend of of mine and chelsea's and the mojo in the morning show uh last night on their newscast so for toledo and grand rapids WDIV is Local 4. It's the NBC affiliate. It's actually a pretty powerful television station nationwide. But they do the fireworks, and they broadcast the fireworks in downtown Detroit. And they get a pretty good amount of people that, for some reason, I still don't understand it, watch fireworks on television. I never can understand why somebody is watching fireworks on television. But I found myself watching fireworks on television yesterday. But they promoted this whole big thing of this big moment with Mojo and a very personal moment. We talked because Christy does this long-form interview that they run on, I think it's WDIV Plus or something like that, or Local 4 Plus or something that they have. They'll promote it in this. And they ran this really nice, it was a nice piece, but I'm really bummed. Because they didn't run the part where I cried I haven't watched it

00:02:54 - 00:02:56 | Speaker 6:

You sent us the link I cannot wait to watch it

00:02:56 - 00:03:05 | Speaker 1:

You were just like tearing up Hardcore and I was like I know that face The tears are about to come And then it just like cut to another part

00:03:05 - 00:03:11 | Speaker 2:

It's what we've come to know From the long running Mojo in the morning show And that audience

00:03:11 - 00:03:22 | Speaker 5:

Connection Sometimes it can come with a cost Chrissy McDonald talks with Mojo about how to balance being real without jeopardizing his family or his marriage.

00:03:25 - 00:04:23 | Speaker 1:

Music in the intro was like, honestly, it's amazing. My philosophy has always been from the get-go. Make them laugh, make them cry, or poke them in the eye. We have to make a listener feel something. And if we aren't entertaining in the first couple of minutes of bringing it up, we gotta move on to something else. this thing right here has changed the game for everybody absolutely and one of the things that i've realized by the way i gotta do this as a bit because in radio you can't see it you know this thing right here yeah what was i holding i mean that would have been kind of fun see which my that's my screen skater that's my wife on the screenscapes ever again. But this has made it that you don't need to sit in your car to listen to a radio show anymore. If we aren't entertaining in the first couple of minutes of bringing it up,

00:04:23 - 00:04:46 | Speaker 6:

we got to move on to something else. Yeah. Entertaining, but also real. And that's what I think is so interesting about you. And I've listened to you for the entire time that you've been on here in Detroit. You've filled in before on the show. Exactly. I've filled in on the show. And I always think it's amazing how much of your personal life that you bring in that ends up being entertainment. And I was wondering about how that has evolved.

00:04:47 - 00:04:51 | Speaker 1:

We're all relatable people. We all have our quirks. We all have our pains.

00:04:51 - 00:04:54 | Speaker 6:

We all have our messy. Let's be honest. Totally.

00:04:54 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 1:

And honestly, if my philosophy has been that.

00:05:00 - 00:06:21 | Speaker 3:

I will try to be as personal with the listeners as possible in hopes that they'll be personal back. And the one thing that I've learned over the years is there's always a time and place for when you talk about it. There sometimes is not the greatest idea to bring up, you know, the night before that you and your wife were in a screaming match. And there's not the time to sit there in the midst of the storm where, you know, my wife and I have gone through counseling so many times. I won't get into stuff on the air while I'm in the middle of it because I don't want this radio show to be the reason why I, you know, fail at my marriage or my wife and I decide that we're going to go our separate ways. And we've almost had a couple of moments where we have went our separate ways. And when I brought that up on the air and shared it, it's been the thing that I think grabs the listeners the most because they're struggling too. And if it at all helps them get through it or maybe helps them understand why they didn't get through it god that's raw it's it's tough i will say this she's extremely understanding about what i talk about and there are times where i've learned as i've gotten older how dumb i was when i was younger to risk you know confidentiality of my family by bringing it up on the radio it's a really really

00:06:21 - 00:06:27 | Speaker 1:

fine line because you have this audience and you come and i think people can smell when you are not

00:06:27 - 00:06:57 | Speaker 3:

being authentic. One of the things as, as the time has gone by being on the air, that is the greatest compliment that people can ever give is I listened to you guys because I knew it would make me feel better. I knew it would make me, you know, be comforted. I knew I would get the, you know, you guys talking about it. You know, the fact that people know that we'll talk about things like that. Um, that's honestly the greatest pride that, that I've had in all the years of

00:06:57 - 00:07:12 | Speaker 1:

doing this. When we look forward into how we're consuming media, how we're listening to radio, what do you think's in store for the next five years when you think about it? Because you were nominated to be in the Radio Hall of Fame. Yeah, I didn't win. I might win this year.

00:07:12 - 00:07:27 | Speaker 3:

Who knows? I want to do it for as long as I possibly can because I have zero hobbies. I'm a horrible golfer and I will end up divorced if I stay home because my wife will be just like out out of my space i take a week's vacation and she's like don't you have like people you can

00:07:27 - 00:07:53 | Speaker 1:

go hang out with you know so yeah that was it i appreciate mojo being real with us he also talks about his biggest regret his proudest moment and that's what brought him to tears during our interview so our full conversation is streaming right now on local four plus along with all of my conversations just download it on your tv local four plus you find netflix and hulu local four plus and you can watch all those conversations those shows really great yeah it's so interesting

00:07:53 - 00:08:01 | Speaker 4:

to hear and you all the time we as listeners well you'll hear people say can't believe they actually talked about that on the air so you know that's gotta take a toll that's a tough

00:08:01 - 00:08:07 | Speaker 1:

balance and he talked about his wife being very patient yeah very understanding yes especially

00:08:07 - 00:08:11 | Speaker 3:

when i hit on ronda walker i'm in the ring we appreciate him being so open like you said i mean

00:08:11 - 00:08:16 | Speaker 1:

he's just been a part of all of us for the last few decades 23 years so yeah the connection's

00:08:16 - 00:08:54 | Speaker 3:

pretty big here in detroit w div that was by the way i love no they were great it was that was cool by the way if you have a great interviewer too if you never have have you you if you first off uh she and her husband were media giants in town here her husband being one of the the very best in sports talk radio uh jamie samuelson and she when she was at Channel 7 and then she went to PBS and started doing a lot of stuff at PBS but they are she's one of the best moms in the world because she's doing it now by herself. That's the best compliment

00:08:54 - 00:08:57 | Speaker 2:

that you would give by the way. It's amazing.

00:08:57 - 00:09:16 | Speaker 3:

She's an amazing woman but thank you for them for doing that interview and if you go watch the longer form which is on YouTube or that Local 4 Plus or whatever they're talking about they'll see exactly what she was talking about I started talking about my kids and And it got pretty emotional.
