Mojo on the morning show. So the other night, Thursday nights is our garbage day, or Thursday is our garbage day. So Wednesday night, I was putting the garbage out. And we had a lot of garbage this week because Chelsea and I have been kind of like cleaning things up in the house and getting rid of some stuff. So it's bringing out the cans, but then we have all the extra stuff that we have to give, you know, get rid of. And some of it was like broken furniture that I don't know why we saved. Like we put it in our storage room in the basement.

00:02:30 - 00:02:32 | Speaker 4:

Thinking one day you could maybe fix it or do something.

00:02:32 - 00:03:51 | Speaker 5:

It had a little piece of nostalgia to it, you know, that it was, you know, something that like the kids probably, you know, broke a tooth on or something. But so we were putting it all out in the front and I'm bringing more and more stuff out there. And as I'm bringing more and more stuff out to go bring to the front, I get completely the crap scared out of me. I am putting it down only to have a dude standing there by my garbage, hiding behind a tree almost, looking at an item that I had just put out just a little bit ago. He was garbage picking and taking some of the stuff that we had. And I go, holy crap. And I'm like, hey, and he goes, oh, no, and he lives on the block that's right behind us. There's, like, a sub right behind us, and he lives in that sub. And he's like, oh, I'm your neighbor. And he goes, I was walking down the street, and, you know, just kind of, like, going for a late-night walk. I saw some of your stuff in here. I just wanted to see if any of this stuff was good. And he was, like, grabbing things of mine that were broken, but he was like, oh, I can fix it. I'm kind of handy and stuff. And I'm, like, looking at this thing going, I don't know if you really want that, though. Like, you know, what's going on? But then I started thinking, okay, he's garbage picking through our stuff. Maybe I need to go to nicer neighborhoods than mine and do a little garbage picking.

00:03:51 - 00:03:51 | Speaker 4:

Yeah.

00:03:52 - 00:04:30 | Speaker 5:

And I remembered this. We talked one time on the air, way back when, about how at the end of the school year, it's the best garbage picking ever to go to Ann Arbor where U of M is. because all the rich New York kids, the rich East Coast kids, parents buy them, like, these great condos and apartments and stuff and then furnish them with, like, really nice furniture. And then at the end of the school year, they don't want to pay for storage, so they just, like, throw it out on the streets and they get rid of it all.

00:04:30 - 00:04:47 | Speaker 4:

Absolutely genius. Something I have never thought of was going to Ann Arbor to do this, But you best believe I'm about to steal my dad's pickup, drive up there, and just start coasting along until I can get some new stuff. Isn't it almost time? I got a big stain on my couch right now. I need a new one.

00:04:47 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 5:

That's actually the thing I was wondering, Shannon, is I wonder if this is the time when everybody should go out there. Can you call us up? When do they graduate? If you're a student or if you have a student at U of M, will you call us up and tell us when everybody starts moving out?

00:05:00 - 00:05:06 | Speaker 1:

moving back home because i think that this might be a great idea to go out and get some of this

00:05:06 - 00:05:33 | Speaker 5:

stuff i actually just garbage picked something i was obsessed did you i needed a um i was gonna buy one anyway a a dog crate remember i was talking about this yeah i was searching for cute dog crate on instagram and somebody in my neighborhood had i feel like it was perfectly fine it just needed to be repainted put one at the curb so i took it and it is now in my living room. Oh, wow. Spray painted it white. It's great. Did you look at

00:05:33 - 00:05:34 | Speaker 1:

it to make sure it doesn't have like

00:05:34 - 00:05:43 | Speaker 5:

any diseases on it? No, I think it- I don't know. I feel bad. I'm wondering if a pet died or something and that's why it was at the curb, but

00:05:43 - 00:06:24 | Speaker 1:

Yeah. No, I'm- so if I'm- my memory serves me correct. A friend of mine went to Ann Arbor after we talked about how Ann Arbor is like a perfect place for garbage picking and these kids will throw away like brand new television. No. They'll put them on their front They don't You know how U of M is It's kind of a little snobby Don't be mad at me But it's a little bit of snobby kids that go there And what ends up happening is These kids are like rich kids Whose parents live in Connecticut And have like A home in the What do they call it I have a home in the Hamptons

00:06:24 - 00:06:25 | Speaker 5:

The Hamptons

00:06:25 - 00:06:36 | Speaker 1:

And I live in Manhattan, and the parents don't want them bringing this crap home because they bought it at Ikea, you know, for

00:06:36 - 00:06:42 | Speaker 5:

cheap. I know, but some of that Ikea stuff's real cute. I know. Okay, so U of M commencement is this weekend, apparently. Oh, really?

00:06:42 - 00:06:44 | Speaker 1:

Somebody just texted. Megan.

00:06:45 - 00:06:47 | Speaker 3:

I'll be in Barbara this weekend.

00:06:48 - 00:06:50 | Speaker 1:

What's going on? It's Mojo in the Morning. Hey, Nikki.

00:06:51 - 00:06:56 | Speaker 4:

Hi. You will get the best stuff out in Bloomfield Township and Bloomfield Village.

00:06:56 - 00:06:56 | Speaker 1:

Really?

00:06:57 - 00:07:04 | Speaker 4:

I got a brand-new wicker patio set, the pots that they throw out, the vases, vases, whatever, the planters.

00:07:04 - 00:07:05 | Speaker 1:

They call them vases there.

00:07:06 - 00:07:21 | Speaker 4:

The vases, yes, darling. Yes. And they have the best stuff, and they just toss it. And I secretly hide from my boss, and I pick it up because she's one of the bougie Birmingham Bluefield people.

00:07:21 - 00:07:27 | Speaker 1:

Wow. Is it weird, though, that if you invite your boss over to your house, she's going to see her old furniture sitting out there?

00:07:27 - 00:07:35 | Speaker 4:

No, she doesn't throw anything away It's her neighbors It's her neighbors that I'm picking the stuff up from

00:07:35 - 00:07:37 | Speaker 1:

Mojo in the morning, what's up? Monica?

00:07:39 - 00:07:39 | Speaker 4:

Hey

00:07:39 - 00:07:45 | Speaker 1:

What's going on? We're talking about garbage picking on the Ann Arbor campus

00:07:45 - 00:08:02 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, so I didn't go to Ann Arbor But I went to another Michigan college And we had a lot of international students That couldn't take anything back with them So they would throw it all out And the, like, dining hall cooks used to go, like, garbage pick at the end of every year.

00:08:03 - 00:08:05 | Speaker 1:

What kind of stuff were we talking about? Can you give us a description?

00:08:07 - 00:08:13 | Speaker 2:

Furniture. I think even sometimes, like, people would find, like, Xbox controllers to that extent. Oh.

00:08:13 - 00:08:27 | Speaker 1:

Really? Like, really nice stuff that you would probably go to a store to go buy, and it would be, you know, I don't know, hundreds to maybe, what, thousands of dollars if you were going to go buy some of the stuff. Sarah?

00:08:29 - 00:08:39 | Speaker 3:

Yes, I live in Ann Arbor, and every year, it's amazing. And this weekend is the weekend to do it. It's graduation, so next week, all the students will be clearing out. Wow.

00:08:39 - 00:08:49 | Speaker 1:

And what are the perfect areas to do this? Because I know they've got those nice apartments right there on Main Street, but are there homes that are better to go to?

00:08:50 - 00:09:05 | Speaker 3:

Any of the high-rises. So there are dumpsters behind, like, Landmark, and I can't think of Paragon, I think, is one of them. Any of the high-rises, there are dumpsters behind them, and you can go right up to them and get them. I got a brand-new suitcase one year.

00:09:06 - 00:09:11 | Speaker 1:

Really? Like what? Like one of those nice, like, hard-shell suitcases that cost a lot of money?

00:09:12 - 00:09:19 | Speaker 3:

Yep, because it was too heavy for the student. She was, like, putting it out, and I was like, why are you putting this out? It's too heavy for her to travel with it.

00:09:19 - 00:09:26 | Speaker 1:

Ooh, that's a good find. Have you ever seen them throw away, like, a television? Because if I'm not mistaken, I've had a friend that has gotten a television.

00:09:27 - 00:09:34 | Speaker 3:

I haven't seen televisions, but you have to go out, like, as they're moving out to get stuff like that. There are people who do this for a living, pretty much.

00:09:34 - 00:09:37 | Speaker 1:

All right, Sarah, we're coming over to see you this weekend, okay?

00:09:37 - 00:09:39 | Speaker 3:

All right, yes.

00:09:39 - 00:09:43 | Speaker 1:

Appreciate the update on that. Asia, what's up?

00:09:45 - 00:09:46 | Speaker 4:

Hi, Asia.

00:09:46 - 00:09:48 | Speaker 1:

Hi, Asia. What's happening? How you doing?

00:09:48 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 4:

not so much i'm born and raised in ann arbor and around now in june are the best times i used to help my dad clean up the student buildings after uh they moved out we've got liquor

00:10:00 - 00:10:07 | Speaker 5:

dressers tvs radios all types of stuff it's like it's the best time to go would your dad ever get

00:10:07 - 00:10:11 | Speaker 3:

some of these items and then wrap them up and give them to you as a present for like christmas

00:10:11 - 00:10:15 | Speaker 5:

nope no need to wrap them up because i was right there taking them along with them

00:10:15 - 00:10:36 | Speaker 3:

you know what's amazing is that we're i mean we're talking like the stuff i was throwing away the other day it was like broken bad and kind of you know furniture like you'd buy like a target that's you know, probably last year, like maybe, I don't know, five, ten years. But the stuff that these kids get really nice things when their parents come here and visit at the beginning of the year from New York.

00:10:37 - 00:11:00 | Speaker 5:

Yeah, because they're only using them for a couple months, and all of them, when they're going back to out of state, they can't take them with them. So they're leaving so much brand new things. They're not being even used for a whole year. So I'm telling you, it is gold, gold, gold. Like, around now is the best time to go. I love it. I love it. I love it. And then everything's brand new. Like, these kids pull up to school on the first day in Porsches and all types of stuff. They do not care.

00:11:00 - 00:11:05 | Speaker 3:

Wait, do they drive their cars back with them, or do they ever leave their cars on the curb? I want to know.

00:11:06 - 00:11:09 | Speaker 5:

I wish. I wouldn't be driving this Equinox right now.

00:11:11 - 00:11:29 | Speaker 3:

All right. Well, if you see Shannon, Megan, myself, KP, Lydia, all out there this weekend, don't say anything. We love when people come up and say hi to us, but we just don't want somebody to call us out. so that we look like we're just coming in town just to kind of steal all the stuff.

00:11:30 - 00:11:32 | Speaker 5:

I most definitely won't, but I take hush gifts, so.

00:11:34 - 00:11:37 | Speaker 3:

We'll figure it out for you. Thank you for calling.

00:11:37 - 00:11:39 | Speaker 5:

Sounds good. Have a great morning, you guys.

00:11:40 - 00:11:41 | Speaker 3:

We love you for listening.
