My name is Patrick Pettway, and I am getting my Associates of Science and General Education with an emphasis in business administration. To me, it was a no-brainer. When you go out here and you're looking for funding to go back to college as a 40-year-old man, I got six people in my household. The extra money just doesn't just grow out of trees. And then afterwards, I can't day drink. It's not a good thing. Because if I day drink, it really knocks me out. and I told Chelsea that we were going to do a date night and the last thing I needed was me going home and falling asleep on the couch which would have happened after having a drink when we were at lunch together so I decided that I was going to go to Starbucks and I was going to get myself some caffeine so I decided that since I already drank my coffee in the morning that I was going to go through and I was going to do my tea and I'm in the drive-thru and it's rather long And I'm like, okay, this is all right. You know, I can deal with it. I won't fall asleep in the drive-thru. And I was excited when I opened up my Starbucks app that I actually had 275 stars or whatever they call it.

Oh, that's a reward. Is that a lot?

Oh, you get it. I think at 50, 100, and 200, you get some kind of discounts. Gotcha. Right? Usually the 200 means you get a freebie out of the deal. So I order my black tea. I said, yeah, I like my mind, you know, whatever. You drink tea, by the way. I normally don't, but I'm trying not to do double coffee during the day because then I can't sleep at night. Then I'm screwed. So I ordered it and the person that I was on the thing says, the car in front of you is paying for your bill. And I'm thinking to myself, oh, that sounds very nice.

No.

You know, that was kind of a cool thing to have happen to me. Maybe they, you know, are just kind people or maybe who knows. Maybe they were somebody that listens to this radio program. Mike's like, no.

No, because you know when it comes after that. You know what you have to do after that.

Yeah, you know where this went.

I mean, I don't know exactly where it went, but I know that you have to pay it forward now, right?

Well, that's what was going on. They were 20 cars deep in a pay it forward at the time. Oh, they told you that? They say you're a car 20-year-old. They said, yeah, somebody started a pay it forward. your 20 cars now into the thing. It's been going on for a while. It was a pretty busy, you know, midday Starbucks run. And so I'm like, okay, I'll pay for the person behind me. And

So I said, can I use my stars? And they said, absolutely, you can use your stars. So I use my stars. And after I use my stars, I go and I look, and it shows me how much money got depleted out of my app. $16 and what did I, $16.56. No.

Dang.

So that means that $5 was free. $16.56 was.

That was a big order.

So my, you know, going to get a free Starbucks, I just basically screwed my stars on that whole deal. And Mike's right on the whole deal that you have to do it. You have to. Or you look like Larry David, I guess, right?

You can't be the guy to break the chain. Right. You don't want to be there. At that point, I would almost just say, I don't want the coffee. Now, I would do what you did and I would buy it and pay it forward, but I don't want to.

You need Fleetwood Macs, never break the chain.

You know, it's funny. I probably recognize it when I heard it because every song, every one of their songs, I'm going, I don't really, I'm not a Fleetwood Mac fan. And then all of a sudden I'm like, oh, I like that song. That, that is one of those things where I know that it's my, it's just my luck. You know, it's like just my luck that that happens to me, you know, where just my luck is I'm going to get my free drink and I only get, get screwed out of the whole deal.

If they didn't tell you that it was part of a pay it forward and they were 20 cars deep, I would have just been like, oh, that's really nice. Thank you. Yep. And been done.

You would have, yeah.

I absolutely would have. But the fact that they told you that this was happening, it's like, no, you have to do it.

I really wonder if any, like, Starbucks employees or former employees are listening, because I feel like if I was working the window and I had to keep going back and forth between orders and cards. That's annoying. It would make it harder, or are you judging the person for stopping? I want to know what your thought process is.

You know what it's like, honestly? And I was thinking of like how I get screwed all the time. It's like when your birthday is coming up and you get a snow day at school and you can't celebrate at school. Right. Like it's like, oh, so now I can't have a birthday. Even though you get the day off for a snow day, why could the snow day not have fallen on a day that wasn't your birthday?

There has to be some piece of you that felt great, though, continuing the change.

Are you kidding me? That's whack. Dude, first off. You've got to feel good, man. This is what the world is supposed to be like. Every day we complain about how terrible the world is, how bad people are, and you get the one opportunity to show up and right the wrong, and you want to be screwed.

Allen Lee, my major is drafting and design. In high school, I did it since my sophomore year, and I kind of wanted to continue it. It was the only thing I was good at. I didn't want to move to a four-year yet. I don't think I was mentally prepared. I found Bishop State. They had the program. I met a few people there. I ended up enrolling. The instructor, first day I met him, I told him about my background. He said, okay, great, you know about this. He built me straight to work. He didn't let me have any leeway. He pushed me to my limits. So I think that made me choose drafting and design at Bishop State and stuck with it. But the sport's amazing. All my instructors just want to see me succeed. They want to push me to my limit. They want to see me to be the best I can be. Get a job. Just be as successful as I can be. And I really appreciate all of them. With my degree...
