Mojo in the morning. Mojo. Spike, Shannon, Megan, Mike. Our producer, KPR director, Lydia. Good to have you guys here with us today. So, got to tell you that I got really lucky yesterday. I got pulled over for speeding and I didn't get a ticket. And And it was something that was on my passenger seat of my car that got me out of the ticket. Tell me what it is because I've never gotten out of a ticket. It was a police officer friend. No, I was going to say, I just drive around with another police officer and I just do. No, honestly, when I tell you this story, I want you to share with me what got you out of a ticket because I know that there are those that will get pulled over and you'll get written up. The majority of the time that probably happens, but then there are certain times where you can catch a police officer at the absolute right time of their life, and they will let you go. Or maybe police officers will call us up and tell us, like, what is it that has let you let somebody go? We don't have to say what police force that you work for or, you know, county, you know, local town. This was actually in a local town, and I won't say what it was because I don't want the guy to get, you know, in trouble or called out for what he did. But I thought what he did was actually kind of cool because I didn't get the ticket. So that's why I thought it was cool. I got pulled over and he told me that I was going 50 in a 35. And when he pulled me over, he saw something on my passenger seat. And he said, are you a Spartan? And I said, well, no, I'm not really a Spartan, but my son's going to go to Michigan State next year. But I guess I'm a Spartan. You know, and I kind of like was stumbling along because I'm I'm like so fearful, like trying to find my title and my registration and my, you know, all that stuff. Yeah. Insurance. And he and he goes, oh, your son's going to go. And he goes, yeah, he goes, just an awful situation that happened there. And I'm like, OK. Oh, OK. Yeah. Yeah. Talking about the shooting that happened. And he said, yeah, I said, I feel for those kids. He goes, it was just horrible. you know and he started talking kind of engaging me in conversation for a moment or two and he had my stuff in his hand and he wasn't looking at it wasn't doing anything with it he was just kind of talking and then he said you know I'm rooting for them to to win uh in the uh the March Madness because I think that it would be a great way to honor those three that that you know that died and all those that got hurt and I said to him I go you know what I never honestly never thought about that but that is actually pretty you know pretty awesome to know that you know here's a team that nobody expected to be even make it the sweet 16 and they made it to the sweet 16 but um so we kind of got into a conversation about that and he looks at my license for a second and then goes hey

let's drive safe and gave me my stuff back and then let me go what yes no so all you have to do is be a spartan fan that's a reason right there come on you can do it fake it just be a fake spartan fan be it be a walmart spartan or whatever i don't know that doesn't rhyme with walmart wolverine be a speedway spartan there you go maybe they sell stuff at speedway um but But I sat there and I thought for a second before I put the car. By the way, do you ever do this? Do you ever get pulled over, whether you get the ticket or don't get the ticket, and you're afraid to pull out because you don't want to do something really bad? To get another ticket every time.

So I do the opposite. I try and pull out really fast and get going while he's still getting organized and his paperwork and his computer and seatbelt on. And I try and get away from him before he gets on the road next to me for the next six miles.

Did you ever peel out, though?

No, no, no.

I'm knocking on wood because it's been such a long time since I've been pulled over. And now that I say that's going to happen, but the anxiety of getting pulled over, like I can feel it in my chest right now.

Have you ever gotten out of a ticket though? Like have they, have they always given, they've always given you one?

I've always gotten a ticket. I'm also very honest. Like the last time I got a ticket was over here on like Maple and Orchard Lake Road. And remember for a while they had those neighborhoods there closed or they had the road there closed because they were putting in those roundabouts. It was a couple of years ago. And I cut through a neighborhood, even though there was a sign that said, do not cut through the neighborhood. And so the guy pulled me over. I could have lied and said, I live here. I'm looking at a paint color on a house or whatever. And I'm like, I'm so sorry. I saw the sign and I still cut through. I get way too nervous. Honesty did not get you out. No, honesty did not get me out. The only time I've ever actually gotten out of a ticket is when I had a friend go to court for me. Oh, yeah. So I wouldn't have invited for you. But I've never gotten out like on the spot.

Yeah. What's going on, Shan? We're talking about, you know, getting out of a ticket, and I got pulled over yesterday and got out of one. It happened to you, too?

Yeah. Now, this was back when I was in high school, but I played football for Davidson football, and a local cop let me go. I was speeding down the road because I had to go over to the high school and go to practice. Oddly enough, but, yeah, he let me off. And he was a fan of the school?

Yeah. Wow, you know what, that's kind of cool. Were you in uniform, or did you have a jersey on, or what?

Yeah, I had the jersey on and everything, too, yep.

Yeah, you know what, that's cool. I wonder if he had a kid that was on the team or something like that. Chelsea, what got you out of it, I guess?

I was coming home from work. Like, I'm a former EMT, and I was in uniform, and I actually wasn't speeding. My plates were expired because I hadn't been to the Secretary of State, and when the cop pulled me over, he saw me in uniform and just told me to fix it and don't let it happen again.

Yeah. You know what? I would think that they wouldn't write up, you know, somebody that they probably will work with at a scene of an accident. And I've heard that police officers won't write up doctors, too, because their fear is that, God forbid, they ever have to go to the hospital. They face that doctor or, you know. So that's interesting. Or nurses, too, I would think. Pauline, hi.

So I went to the gas station yesterday where I live with my kids, and I pulled out, and I pulled right out in front of a cop yesterday. And so I pulled over, and he looked at my license. He goes, oh, you live here? And I said, yeah. He goes back to his car. he comes back he's like well just be careful next time he's like but i'm just letting you go

because you live here wow like living was what was it a local the local township police guy or

yeah yep he's seen that i had my kids in the car and that's awesome and i as soon as he came to the window i said i'm so sorry he goes for what and he kind of laughed and i said i pulled right out

in front of you i'm so sorry oh you know what that was probably like shannon said you just own up to

it sometimes you're just polite and it's enough to get out i heard a cop friend of mine told me that he will not write a ticket if he sees a nice family in a car and they you know they they don't have like the really expensive vehicle and all that stuff and you're that megan you need to

kidnap a few kids yeah but but well yeah usually when i have my kids i feel like that's when i get

but he said he said he said that if he sees that you're it would be a struggle for you to have to pay the ticket he doesn't want to get right your ticket that's really cool um so kind of kind of robin hooding it i guess what's going on uh kim yes when i got pulled over i put the windows down

and i used it as a teaching moment i had both my daughters ask questions and the police officer

was so polite to them but never wrote me the ticket that is smart smart and smart smart you know to get out of the ticket and smart as a mom i got

pulled over on the ohio turnpike and so same thing i put all the windows down and figured well i'll let him see that's the whole family going on a vacation and as soon as he walks up to the window natalie in the back seat goes dad was speeding he said he knew he was speeding totally turned me out i was gonna leave her on the side of the road after that we have a cop on with us right now

doreen uh officer doreen are you there or no you're not an officer i'm sorry hold on hold no hold on I'm going to come to you in a second. Actually, I'll go to you first, and then I'll get the officer. What's going on, Doreen?

So I got pulled over, and the cop asked me for my number. If I give him my number, he could not give me a ticket. Oh, my God. That's creepy.

That, by the way, could get him in huge trouble. I gave him my old number. Oh, you gave him a fake number?

Yeah. But the last time I got pulled over was right in front of my kids' school and the high school, and all of their classmates were sending, you know, snaps of me being pulled over. Oh, no. And they're like, Mom, leave, Mom, leave. And I'm like, I can't. I'm just getting pulled over.

Sounds like you got a heavy foot on the gas pedal. Maybe you better get a few more fake numbers.

No, definitely not. You might get yourself in trouble So I try and avoid that

What is it that will get Somebody out of a ticket if they get pulled over by you, officer?

You know, so I have Kind of a list I mean, obviously, you don't want to mess with the people that make your food If you frequent there There's a guy pulled over, and he's like, oh, hey I see you all the time over here And I was I'm going to give this guy a ticket Oh, yeah, they'll be spitting on your burger if you do that Oh, yeah, and then I recognized him, I'm like, I like this sandwich shop And I seen him back, so I gave him a warning. And last week, I actually pulled the guy over, and he was like, I am late for work. And I asked him where he works, where he's at the coffee shop. I let him go. I followed him to the coffee shop, and I got myself coffee.

Oh, good for you. He was probably so scared you were behind him the whole way. Oh, yeah.

Yeah, so when I pulled up, I was like, hey, this guy's late. It's my fault, you know. But, I mean, we have a lot of discretion when we can write tickets, you know. And some people obviously deserve them.

What's the one thing people do if you're on the fence about giving them a ticker now? What's the one thing they do that you're definitely going to give them a ticket if they do?

If they start trying to argue about something simple and like, hey, this is what I saw. And they want to argue it and they start getting rude. It's like, okay, well, if you want to argue this, then we can argue this in court. I'm not going to play the game. I try and be understanding. I don't like writing people tickets for something simple like a light. You know, I'll tell you, lights out, get it fixed. If I see it in a week or so, you're going to get a ticket then. But people have lives to live. They've got jobs to get to. As long as they're not, you know, putting other people at risk, I don't have an issue. It's just pulling them over, giving them warning. You know, I don't want to ruin somebody's day. Awesome.

People that have a little more leniency because of what they do. And, you know, I mean, I'm a fact at heart, and I like to eat.

By the way, today's the day I'm nervous about. Two of the last three times I've been pulled over, it was racing to a school to read to kids for March's Reading Month. So today I'm going to Dearborn, and I want to make sure I leave early enough here because I don't want to make it a three-timer.

Hi, good morning. I'm from Michigan, but I was in Indiana this weekend, and I was lost looking for my daughter's college house. And I ran a stop, and apparently I went around the block twice, according to the cop, and did not use my signal. And I did not even know he was behind me. Anyway, he pulled up, and I said, oh, my God, I'm so glad you pulled me over. He tilted his head like a dog that heard a high sound and went, what? Like, who says that? And I said, I'm lost. I said, look at my phone. I'm .2 miles away from this house, and I can't find it. Anyway, he did not give me a ticket, and he led me to the house. Oh, that's awesome.

That's incredible. What a good guy. And then this is one way to get out of a ticket. What happened to you, Chris?

Well, I wasn't feeling well. I was, I don't know, about two miles from home, I was doing maybe 70 and a 55, and a cop pulls me over. I pull into a church parking lot, and I am trying not to be sick. I roll my window down. He comes up to me. I don't even believe he asked me for my license and registration, and I threw up. Oh, jeez. I threw up on.

The passenger side of my car, which would have been really stupid, or I would have done it on the left side. So I threw up. Some got on him. I mean, of course. Oh, no. Oh, my gosh. I have no idea. I wish I could see this police officer, this sheriff, to apologize.
