This is the Bishop Statement at Bishop State Community College. We want you to hear what our students, educators, and business leaders have to say.

00:01:06 - 00:01:51 | Speaker 2:

Alan Lee, my major is drafting and design. In high school, I did it since my sophomore year, and I kind of wanted to continue it. It was the only thing I was good at. I didn't want to move to a four-year yet. I don't think I was mentally prepared. I found Bishop State. They had the program. I met a few people there. I ended up enrolling. The instructor, first time I met him, I told him about my background. He said, okay, great, you know about this. He built me straight to work. He didn't let me have any leeway. He pushed me to my limits. So I think that made me choose drafting design at Bishop State and stuck with it. The sport's amazing. All my instructors just want to see me succeed. They want to push me to my limit. They want to see me be the best I can be, get a job, just be as successful as I can be. And I really appreciate all of them. With my degree, as of right now, my plan is to work for the city of Mobile with their urban planning department. And I've already got a job shadow before, and hopefully I will end the ship over the summer. If you choose Bishop, we're welcome to have you any day.

All right, so I was watching yesterday, the news, and they showed that yesterday was Groundhog's Day, which I didn't even think this thing was still around. For some reason, I thought they canceled that. Like, that was part of the whole woke moment when they were like...

00:02:14 - 00:02:26 | Speaker 3:

I think they tried to. Are there, like, rules for betting on that, like there are for, like, major sports leagues? Because what's keeping the guy from announcing if they saw the shadow or not from betting on that?

00:02:26 - 00:02:34 | Speaker 7:

And you know what? I don't know. Does DraftKings or any of those places have that? Do they really? Because I would think it's all a lie. Because the guy who

00:02:34 - 00:02:40 | Speaker 3:

picks out the what is it? Groundhog. He's a little groundhog thing.

00:02:40 - 00:03:29 | Speaker 7:

Can y'all explain that to me? So if the groundhog sees its shadow, that means it's six more weeks of winter or something like that? I think. Here, hold on. Let me pull up the story here. It's Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow yes and predicted six more weeks of wintry weather the woodchuck's weather forecasting abilities is the annual ritual that goes back more than a century in western pennsylvania when phil is deemed to have not seen his shadow that is said to usher in an early spring well guess what the little bastard saw his shadow and now we uh we got to deal with a little bit more uh i guess winter weather we've had a horrible folks thank you for coming and i your

00:03:29 - 00:03:46 | Speaker 4:

favorite president donald trump have an important groundhog day announcement the groundhog saw his shadow which of course means six more weeks of tariffs on all of the countries who have shown me

00:03:46 - 00:04:20 | Speaker 7:

disrespect all right there you go um all right so uh this is actually a question for you and here's Here's my question. My question is, what's the animal that you knew? Because when I lived in Tucson, Arizona, they didn't have a hedgehog or whatever. I think they had like a snake or something like that. And then somebody told me that in Royal Oak, that the city of Royal Oak, the zoo has one. Has a what? Has an animal or something. I don't know what it is.

00:04:20 - 00:04:21 | Speaker 6:

That predicts weather? Yeah.

00:04:21 - 00:04:25 | Speaker 7:

I don't know if it's a goat or something, but there's other cities that have these things.

00:04:25 - 00:04:25 | Speaker 6:

My dad has a knee.

00:04:26 - 00:04:27 | Speaker 7:

Yeah, your knee hurts you?

00:04:27 - 00:04:29 | Speaker 6:

My dad's knees are hurting.

00:04:29 - 00:04:30 | Speaker 3:

That is true, by the way.

00:04:31 - 00:04:33 | Speaker 7:

Yeah, you get pains in your body.

00:04:33 - 00:04:36 | Speaker 3:

I didn't know that there are other animals.

00:04:36 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 7:

In Connecticut, they have a duck. So there's a duck called Scramble that becomes. And then I guess in North Carolina, they got a, like a pig, uh, that does it Florida. They have an owl and they also have like a, a reptile, maybe an alligator or something. I'd be, that's what I would like if the alligator.

00:05:00 - 00:05:10 | Speaker 4:

comes out. By the way, if the alligator comes out, I want the guy with the goofy top hat to be having to deal with it. In New York, in Upper State New York, they have Henrietta the chicken

00:05:10 - 00:05:12 | Speaker 3:

that tells you. This is so stupid.

00:05:13 - 00:05:18 | Speaker 4:

What is it? Hold on. Let's look up. Detroit Zoo Animal. What is the Google app? I'm telling you,

00:05:18 - 00:05:31 | Speaker 6:

they must have done something about it in Smith's first grade class on Friday because he came home with this cute little decorated bag and he's like, my prediction is inside. All weekend, he was I'm so excited for Grandpa's Day.

00:05:32 - 00:05:33 | Speaker 3:

Woody the Woodchuck?

00:05:33 - 00:05:34 | Unknown:

Oh, no.

00:05:34 - 00:05:40 | Speaker 3:

Is that what it is? I don't know. When I Google it, it says the Detroit Zoo doesn't have an animal that predicts winter.

00:05:40 - 00:05:47 | Speaker 4:

Oh, here you go. Michigan, they do have Woody, its own groundhog, that predicts. You're right.

00:05:47 - 00:05:48 | Speaker 3:

Woody the Woodchuck?

00:05:48 - 00:06:11 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, or something. A gobbler's name, I guess it's Pennsylvania. I don't know. To me, when I see these things and I go, okay, what is it going to be? Because if we deal with another January ever in our lives, that was the longest month of our lives. Like, it felt like it was 365 days and not 31 days.

00:06:11 - 00:06:18 | Speaker 3:

February is off to a great start, though. Because, I mean, Beyonce won, the Luka trade. The hits are just keep coming and coming.

00:06:18 - 00:06:25 | Speaker 4:

There's a lot of good stuff going on. I just don't know. I don't know if I could put up with six more. Is it six more weeks?

00:06:25 - 00:06:31 | Speaker 5:

We haven't had a winter. So what's the problem with dealing with six more weeks of this? What is she talking about? What?

00:06:31 - 00:06:33 | Speaker 4:

What are you, crazy?

00:06:33 - 00:06:34 | Speaker 5:

We had like two days of snow.

00:06:34 - 00:06:36 | Speaker 4:

What? We've had, come on.

00:06:37 - 00:06:41 | Speaker 5:

It was literally 50 degrees like a week and a half ago.

00:06:41 - 00:06:52 | Speaker 4:

It was, Megan, it was minus 20 degrees. For like a day or two. Are you living in the same city as I'm living in? There's no way. You must go, do you go home and just hang out in the apartment with the blinds closed and we just don't know that?

00:06:52 - 00:06:59 | Speaker 5:

No, I just, I think that everybody's so funny when it comes to cold weather. They're like, winter has been so long. I'm like, it's been in the 40s most of the time.

00:07:00 - 00:07:15 | Speaker 4:

By the way, the only good news to this whole thing is that stupid groundhog has predicted the last couple of years that it didn't see its shadow. So that means that there was supposed to be a shorter one, and it was not a shorter. I felt like the spring did not come fast enough.

00:07:16 - 00:07:16 | Speaker 3:

So he's wrong.

00:07:16 - 00:07:18 | Speaker 4:

What's up, Sean? How you doing?

00:07:18 - 00:07:19 | Speaker 3:

What up, Mojo?

00:07:20 - 00:07:24 | Speaker 4:

Hi. Phil, you have the prediction on Punxsutawney Phil for us, Sean, huh?

00:07:25 - 00:07:34 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, on Fox 2 Morning News this morning, they said over the decades when he sees his shadow and saying it's six more weeks this winter, he's been 40% wrong.

00:07:34 - 00:07:38 | Speaker 4:

Thank God. Who said that? Jay Towers said that? Because Jay's never wrong.

00:07:38 - 00:07:40 | Speaker 1:

Jay Towers did this morning on Fox 2 Morning News.

00:07:40 - 00:07:45 | Speaker 4:

Okay. What do you think? Somebody needs to kidnap that thing.

00:07:46 - 00:07:50 | Speaker 6:

Well, it's not been the same one. I hope you know this. It's not?

00:07:51 - 00:07:52 | Speaker 4:

They don't have one groundhog?

00:07:52 - 00:07:55 | Speaker 6:

Do you think they have one grandchild that has lived that long?

00:07:56 - 00:08:08 | Speaker 4:

My kids had one elf on the shelf. What are you talking about? Don't you dare. Shannon's, by the way, going to give out some details here that she shouldn't be doing on the radio here, Sean. I don't believe it.

00:08:08 - 00:08:20 | Speaker 1:

Oh, Lord. Sean, Megan says that we haven't had any cold or snow in January.

00:08:20 - 00:08:22 | Speaker 5:

That's not what I said at all.

00:08:22 - 00:08:22 | Speaker 4:

What did you say?

00:08:22 - 00:08:24 | Speaker 5:

I said that this hasn't been a harsh winter.

00:08:25 - 00:08:25 | Speaker 4:

Oh, it's been horrible.

00:08:25 - 00:08:29 | Speaker 1:

My daughter's in Maryland, and she just got a foot of snow last weekend.

00:08:29 - 00:08:32 | Speaker 4:

Well, we had some snow on Friday. I thought I was going to drive off the road.

00:08:32 - 00:08:35 | Speaker 5:

Yeah, complete dusting. Wow. No, it was three plus.

00:08:36 - 00:08:44 | Speaker 4:

Literally, there was bad snow on Friday. How'd you make it, man? You need to move out to West Bloomfield and get out of the city. Or maybe I need to move to the city. I'll be happy. What's up, Drake? How you doing?

00:08:45 - 00:08:51 | Speaker 2:

00:10:59 - 00:11:12 | Speaker 7:

Like, it's been fine. You guys, you know what? He's going to love this. According to the NOAA, this winter has been one of the warmest on record in the United States in the past, like, 130 years.

00:11:12 - 00:11:24 | Speaker 6:

I don't trust any abbreviated people. Anybody that, anybody who's just as abbreviations are the people that you still use their middle name when they say their full name. All right. Bye, Katie.

00:11:24 - 00:11:52 | Speaker 5:

states like a home for people it may not be like a four-year where you have a dorm your roommate you have a rec center but it's still a place you can go meet new people classmates put in the hallway make friends with advisors on all these teachers and everything like that it's just a place you could feel like yourself and not try to be the thing you don't want to be. With this program, I learned networking a lot. We've had two dinners with heads of different companies dealing with shipping or even game design builds, dealing with AutoCAD or any 3D modeling. So really being able to meet new people or meet heads of new people has been really helpful. I don't come from a wealthy family, so four years were kind of not out the picture, but less probable for me to go to. Bishop State with my scholarship, it cut my price in half and made it way easier for me to go to school for the same 12 credits I would go for a four-year.
