Yesterday I had something happen to me. So you guys tell me if I was potentially getting scammed. It's been so crazy out with this smoke and stuff from the Canadian wildfires that I'm checking out all of the, you know, air, like often the distance as I'm driving down Northwestern Highway. and i pull off to go get myself something to drink and when i pull off to the side uh i see a woman that is standing right on the front of this uh bunch of stores that are there and she's holding the sign basically saying that she's homeless and she's looking for food and i started thinking to myself i'm like this is awful that you know there are people that are obviously homeless but also people that are have to be outside all day in this stuff and i know there's a lot of people that are out working and this stuff but there's also then you got to think about the people that are living on the streets so i stop and i'm like you know what i'm gonna give her something because a lot of times these restaurants that are all there won't let you come in unless you buy something yeah so i figured you know what i'll give her some money so i gave her 10 bucks and um you know said to her i said hey you should go inside you should go you know get yourself something to drink she then pulls out of her pocket look like maybe half a dozen or so Starbucks cards and says would you like to buy some of these Starbucks cards for me at a discounted rate and she had Starbucks cards there so I said to her I go no you know I just had the $10 and then I went ended up going there's a Starbucks that's right there and I ended up going to Starbucks and got my drink and then drove through and waved her on my way out and she was very

00:03:01 - 00:03:10 | Speaker 3:

friendly but I started thinking to myself I just paid full price should I have gotten a discounted

00:03:10 - 00:03:59 | Speaker 4:

card what do you mean well she got she had said the discounted rate i don't know what she was gonna sell them to me for i should have asked her you know what i mean like i'm not even smart enough to do it and then i started thinking to myself well maybe it's not a good idea for me to do it because i'm thinking if i buy it it may not have anything on it well that's right i'm saying you just you made a donation to her right but i'm not even worried about the donation now i'm just thinking about the starbucks card the entire time like at first i was thinking about her getting out of the smog and the fog and the smoke and all that stuff. Then I started thinking to myself, I'm going, crap, I wonder if those Starbucks cards are really legit. Does anybody, any of our listeners know, is this like a scam or something that I was going to be falling victim of? Because you can take the cards. Or legitimately, yeah, I know I could take the cards, but how do I know there's something on the cards?

00:03:59 - 00:04:13 | Speaker 1:

No, no, that's what I'm saying. You could just go into a Starbucks, like Smith's done it before, where he's just taken a card. Right. And we didn't load anything on it, you know, So it wasn't whatever, but I'm like, oh, you can't, you can't do that. But you know, that's $0 on there.

00:04:13 - 00:04:19 | Speaker 2:

That's what I think happened to you. You think maybe she just grabbed, cause you can get them from anywhere. You can get them from the grocery store now. Yeah.

00:04:19 - 00:04:22 | Speaker 6:

Is it illegal to sell cards that don't have anything on them?

00:04:22 - 00:04:50 | Speaker 4:

I don't know. I was, I was, I don't know if this is a new scam. Has anybody ever fallen for something like this? Like a scam like this? Like, I feel like those kids that are on the sides of the road selling those candy bars that are for their basketball team to go to New Jersey for some tournament or something like that. They're all selling like M&Ms and Snickers bars and all the rest of that stuff. But is that a scam? I don't know if these kids are really kids that are playing basketball. I also want to know, how are they making money then?

00:04:50 - 00:04:53 | Speaker 2:

Well, if you don't have your uniform on, I question it.

00:04:53 - 00:04:53 | Speaker 4:

Yeah?

00:04:54 - 00:05:10 | Speaker 2:

I've seen kids out there like in full uniform. And I'm like, okay, you're absolutely doing it. I mean, that's... like dedication yeah you got the uniform but in that situation you're getting something tangible for your donation yes you just don't know if the donation is going to where they say it's going

00:05:10 - 00:05:43 | Speaker 4:

but maybe it's a fake candy bar or something i don't know like i honestly i look at these i look at this stuff sometimes and i go okay where's the where's the hook here didn't you where's the the magazine people oh yeah i had these kev you weren't here me telling the story back in the day But Mike and Megan and Shannon, you guys got to remember this. When the guy came and he was going to sell me all these magazines. First off, nobody reads magazines anymore. What year is this? That's my first question. All right. It was at the time when we still were kind of reading magazines. But even now, I like to have it if I'm on the toilet. You know what I mean? Like, I like to have it in my hand.

00:05:43 - 00:05:47 | Speaker 2:

I got tricked into those coupons, the tropical smoothie coupons. Right.

00:05:48 - 00:06:15 | Speaker 4:

So, well, I ended up ordering, Mike, I ordered Sports Illustrated, Us Weekly, People, and And I think I even got Chelsea of one of the rag mags. You turned into the old dentist office I used to do. But I ended up ordering from this guy a ton of these magazines and did this whole thing where you pay up front. And when you pay up front, you get a discount. The Tropical Smoothie one, did you go to Tropical Smoothie and did they give you anything?

00:06:15 - 00:06:42 | Speaker 2:

You get deals on smoothies or whatever, but it's hard to say no to those kids. Like it's hard to say no when a kid comes to your door. Oh, yeah. and it gives you the whole spiel about how it's for his team, and he's really into baseball, and yada, yada, yada. And you've got your kids standing right behind you who are going to do this someday, and you're like, okay, I'll buy the $50 magazine. The two cords of firewood. Oh, yeah, that's right, you got it. I got it, I got it.

00:06:44 - 00:06:58 | Speaker 4:

Augustus Gloop, two months later, but I got it. The kid who looked like the kid from The Wizard of Oz. Not The Wizard of Oz, Billy Bahanga. You're ruining my childhood. Harry Potter, the kid from Harry Potter. Well, you already ruined mine, so back at you. What's up, Ryan? How you doing?

00:06:59 - 00:07:00 | Speaker 3:

Good. How are you?

00:07:00 - 00:07:01 | Speaker 4:

Good. What's going on?

00:07:01 - 00:07:13 | Speaker 3:

I was just making a comment. She was probably getting donated those gift cards from people that want to help her out but don't get cash. Oh, that's a good point. She ends up selling them because she wants the cash.

00:07:14 - 00:07:21 | Speaker 4:

Honestly, that might be the smartest thing ever. I probably should have then bought it, right? I would have gotten a better deal on the thing.

00:07:21 - 00:07:27 | Speaker 3:

I mean, either way, you're going to give her the $10. So if it had money on it, it shouldn't have been it.

00:07:27 - 00:07:40 | Speaker 4:

Well, notice I gave her the $10 first, and then she asked me if I wanted to buy them afterwards. So I should have. Would that have been bad of me to say, well, hold on. Let me buy it with the money I just gave you and see what kind of a conversation that we get into.

00:07:41 - 00:07:44 | Speaker 3:

I mean, you have all the bargaining power right there, so you could have.

00:07:45 - 00:07:53 | Speaker 4:

No, I don't because I gave her the money already. I already put it in her hand. Yeah, that's true. Yeah. Yeah. Mojo in the morning, what's going on, Amber?

00:07:55 - 00:07:57 | Speaker 1:

Oh, nothing. Just on my way into work.

00:07:57 - 00:07:59 | Speaker 4:

Yeah? What's happening? What can we do for you?

00:08:00 - 00:08:08 | Speaker 1:

Oh, I just made a comment. Don't buy them unless you can, you know, if they have a receipt there with a balance on it or they let you check it, then you can go ahead and buy them.

00:08:08 - 00:08:17 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, I should have said, all right, you come with me into the drive-thru. We'll go through the drive-thru together, and if it's got exactly the money you say on there, then I'll give you the money. Otherwise, we're not doing this thing.

00:08:18 - 00:08:26 | Speaker 1:

And you only buy them if they sell them half off. that's what she was trying to do that's what she was trying to do is it bad wait is it bad to

00:08:26 - 00:09:41 | Speaker 4:

negotiate though with a homeless person like i i feel like karma is gonna bite me in the ass if i do that no you'll be okay so joe my son joe says that out in front of their walmart's uh i'm sorry home depots and lowe's down in tampa they have people that are just looking to earn some money for the day and he said that they'll hold a sign saying I'll work for the day and they'll come work for you because there's a lot of construction people that will work so Jed had to do work around his dad's house and so you remember Jed and Joe and Ashley and those guys so Jed had to do some yard work so Jed went to the Home Depot drove a guy from there to work with him for a day to do some work around his house and then took him back to the Home Depot and and did it afterwards no he did not he did and he said it was the most unbelievable thing ever and and i think i remember this vaguely back in the day when i lived in arizona and it was kind of like that where you would see people that would just be hanging out at those stores waiting for somebody to grab you know a little labor that day that's the beginning of a dacu series where

00:09:41 - 00:09:43 | Speaker 2:

A murder has taken place

00:09:43 - 00:09:51 | Speaker 4:

But the funniest is Could you imagine the guy in the car With Jed the entire time Having to listen to Nickelback

00:09:51 - 00:09:54 | Speaker 3:

That poor guy Can I go back

00:09:54 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 2:

And him talking about Papa and Nancy Papa

00:10:00 - 00:10:20 | Speaker 4:

Yeah, you're going to get in the funny thing was Jed's dad actually went back to the ring cam and was like, who's the guy? But is that the most genius thing ever? Think about this. If you're a kid that has to do chores for your parents, if you can actually have somebody help you do those chores, you do it in a second. The smartest thing ever.

00:10:22 - 00:10:43 | Speaker 2:
