Welcome to Open Audition Friday. It's time. Would you like to have your taste of being on the radio? This is what we have for you. We have an opening on our radio show. And the beauty of this opening is we aren't just filling this opening with some radio retread. Actually, who knows? We haven't hired anybody yet. It could be one. Maybe we'll be, let's see here. I'm trying to think. Who would be a radio retread that we could hire here? Or it could be you. Could be, you know, Bob from Bakersfield. I don't know. Bob from where would you be from? They had somebody sitting in the corner. And I'm like, oh, what company is this guy from? He was from Blockbuster Video. I'm not kidding you. Wow. And they were looking for people to work there. Call back. Well, today here on the show, we got so many people that are wanting to be part of the show just to see if they could maybe get themselves a full-time job. The beauty of this job is that you would get to work for iHeartRadio, so you'd be an employee of iHeartRadio. Just like the rest of us, you would get paid a salary, so it would not be an hourly position. And there are benefits that come with this. This is a pretty big job. I'll be honest, giving away a car, a house. Babies. boobs teeth boobs teeth um babies like you said these are all cool things trips this is a job though yeah i mean i'll take a trip to the i heard radio music festival that only lasts two days this thing could last who knows how long right i mean i've been doing this thing here for 25 plus years and to that point it's not just a job it's potentially a career yeah and it's honestly it's a life-changing situation like i could not imagine my life not doing radio or as the the career that

And we've done the topics before on the show of what would we do if we weren't doing this job. And all of those are reputable jobs. But this job, I don't have to wear a suit every single morning. Or if I don't want to, I don't have to shower, which...

I did today. I used Zach's deodorant today. I did shower. I forgot to put on deodorant. I'm like, who has deodorant? Is Shannon with degree? I would have never thought. Actually, it's so much better than that Whole Foods brand that you use that doesn't give you full protection the entire day. I tried to be crunchy and it didn't work. I would much rather get some kind of chemical in my body than smell. All right. Are we ready to go? Well, first of all, I freaking love you guys. Why? you guys are awesome so far so good we love you back um i love entertainment i did theater growing up and dance growing up um just making people smile and laugh is really just something i thrive to do um and i never really thought it would be an opportunity for me to make that into a career and then i heard about this open audition and i thought well i might as well give it a shot

so here i am i find this to be very interesting you put together a nice resume which by the way the last time i did a resume i think honestly i was 19 years old i don't think i've had a resume i wouldn't even know what to do and there was not one truth on that resume i just want you to know that um and then you also put some photos in here which are really nice did you have all this stuff prior to even coming in here like are you somebody that that uh already has us prepared for things

yeah so i'm part of a boudoir i don't know if you know what that is um hold on i just did it

I just did one.

I'm part of like an empowerment women's group. I was a brand ambassador for a photographer. And so I kind of got some headshots for free and some other stuff for being a brand ambassador. And I thought, well, I might as well. Perfect time to use them. Wait, you put the boudoir photos in here? Oh, my gosh. No, just the headshots. I was like, that's why Mojo's staring at this folder. That was just handed to him.

Can I be honest? I'm staring at a photo here that looks like it was a surgery. What is that photo?

From a flesh eating bacteria. That was from the flesh.

why did you put this in here explain that to me why that was there because you look at that and

you just think what the heck what's going on exactly it's a good icebreaker what do you i

often wonder this and i don't even know what the answer is how do you get over a flesh-eating bacteria like is it medication that what do you what do you i don't even know how you would do

that yeah so i i actually was misdiagnosed from the first hospital because it's so rare that they didn't even know what was going on so i was sent home and my mom was like this is not right so we went to a different hospital and i was admitted within five minutes wow um and they thought it was just hematoma which is i don't i'm not sure if you know what that is but it's kind of like a bruise under the skin um so they thought it was just that i had that on my back okay i fell down

the stairs at the bar in east lansing different thing yes so they thought it was a hematoma so

the surgeon um i had just eaten so they couldn't put me under anesthesia so they did a little bedside surgery i was awake they put some lidocaine in my stomach and cut me open and as soon as he cut me open this foul odor just came up and he was like this is not this is not right oh my god and so um within 24 hours i was admitted to a trauma um floor where i went underwent four um emergency surgeries um and then i had a wound vac placed on after that and then tons of

antibiotics and i i fell downstairs so that's how i got my uh injury how do you get an injury where

or when this happens yeah so i went in to have an ovarian cyst removed um the cyst was the size of a softball so it was very large which is very common uh for women might not that yeah yeah so it needed to come out and so we went in for the routine cystectomy and i have a pass with MRSA which is like a staph infection um it's it's in my chart but they didn't give me any antibiotics after the surgery and so the MRSA then turned into the flesh-eating bacteria okay yeah so i want to

ask you so this is a radio show you hear us do the you know show every single day and you hear us talk about our you know our personal lives you're pretty open to talking i mean this is unbelievable like she brought she brought photos she's and she's sharing this stuff with us so obviously that's that's something kind of cool you know to be able to know that that you have the ability to be able to just open up without even us asking a question yeah absolutely you never

know who you're gonna you know have relate to you or who you can you know touch and so it's great to

just share your story what time did you show up today to be able to get in here as early as you

are you're one of 3 a.m oh my god you were here i was the first one here at 3 a.m i sat in my car

and i waited you know how hard it is for me to wake up every morning at 3 30 but that's been like consistently the time that i wake up at 3 30 so i don't know are you an early to bed type

person or uh yeah i usually go to bed like eight o'clock nine o'clock lady i know but i'm a first

shifter so i love mornings i enjoy it oh really cool uh it's what other jobs have you done yeah

so right now i'm a medical model builder um so i build models for surgeons to learn how to do hip replacements shoulder replacements um that kind of thing okay yeah you got a shoulder for

me because i had said a shoulder surgery i'm i'm dying over here yeah i can basically perform a surgery so you know oh my gosh like legos no like bones like that kind of stuff just like no i'm intrigued i think you seem comfortable in front of the microphone which is very nice

that's nice to know and you have such a positive energy in your phone yeah i appreciate to meet you well there you go there's brent so so nice to meet you on our very first audition all right there you go nice to meet you guys

I'm looking at all your professional experience. Boy, you've got a lot of professional experience, including it looks like you've done some radio stuff, huh?

Yeah, absolutely. I had an internship while I was still in school in Grand Haven, 103.5 WAWL.

Oh, I'm so sorry about that.

What are they? Are they Grand Haven's number one hit music station?

No, just a local station. Oh, okay. That's fine. They do a lot with the community and stuff like that. that. What did you do there? So I was just a DJ. I would come in. Just a DJ. That's what we do. I say that in a way where I was only on a couple hours a day. Okay. And I would just come in and I would do traffic updates, weather updates, talk about what's going on in the community. And then I'd let it roll. How is the traffic coming here today? Do it as like a traffic report. The traffic, it's nice and easy. It's going up on the freeway. You can get here super nice. Little muggy. Be careful. Maybe wear something a little

lighter but i didn't obviously it's funny when when you dress up for an audition you know you come for it i remember the first thing that i i auditioned for a radio station wlrw champaign illinois and i showed up wearing a tie and i got to the door and the guy goes sales jobs aren't right away the guy i'm like oh god i screwed up yeah i felt a little overdressed but um i figured

better to be a little overdressed than underdressed no i think that's good you know what's funny i'm

looking at the format of uh of resumes the format of resume resumes still have not have not changed at all like have you ever yeah i literally haven't done a resume i think since college but

yeah did you ai or chat gpt that thing no absolutely not you did no i didn't okay you're giving me the look like no no no no

I did it all myself. I think I used Google Docs as like format, but then I tweaked it and messed with it and made it mine. Okay.

So you've, I mean, you've already done a little bit of radio stuff. Why should we hire you specifically versus everybody else out there?

Yeah. So I just graduated from Grand Valley State University. I really fell in love with radio early and made it my own thing. I wanted to do TV at first and then I found out there was so much more creative freedom in a medium like radio. And it was just the thing for me. I fell in love doing it through my intro class, my advancement class, and my professors just were like, you know what? If this is what you want to do, put your head down and do it. And it became a dream of mine to be on a show where I could really, really be myself and express my creative freedom. And I think Mojo in the Morning was just the show when I saw it.

Who introduced you to Mojo in the Morning?

My dad. Really? Oh, yeah.

Would he drive you to school listening to this Asian?

Absolutely.

Was it ever a point where you knew it was so inappropriate you shouldn't have been listening to it?

Yeah, there were a couple times my dad would have to like, oh, turn it down real quick.

Explain to me like what stuff he would turn it down on because I always wonder what people turn the radio down on when they're listening to the show.

I think I was still in, not to date it, I was still in middle school when I first started listening. So anytime you guys would start talking about like relationship stuff or anything controversial like that,

he'd be like, let me turn it down a little bit. I don't feel like having to talk with you today.

you know what i encourage by the way of kids and i know it's summertime so kids aren't really listening kids if you're ever listening to the show with your parent who's a big fan of the show and we talk about you know stories that like you're talking about dad turning it down like like going down stories you know what i mean if we ever do that ask your dad if he's ever gone down and then just say to dad say dad mojo told me to do it that's my my advice to you you know Was that a little bad? Are you a little uncomfortable?

I should take that advice today. You don't think so?

Did she say it like that, Ted? brian brian is your last name on the resume your real name because that's like a radio name it is that's me that's i mean that's like a really kind of a cool name i like that yeah it's funny because of i had my fake name i had mojo on my resume as my real as the name on the deal and the best was everybody thought that that was my real name for like the longest time so they yeah in my i had a when i first started radio i called myself mojo morales because i'm cuban and i wanted to use the cuban to get me a job i figured you know what so random my dad i was you know what's wrong with mojo morales not even morales i know it's not morales but i i my real last name my real last name was it was not uh didn't flow it started with a c he used to be called peeping tom anything

better than peeping tom brian if you had to come up with a radio name that said a lot about your personality, what would it be?

That's a really good question. Flying Brian. Flying Brian, I love it. I love it.

I actually worked with a guy, I think, that was Flying Brian. There was an old radio night guy that used to be called Flying Brian. Brian Haynes, anything else you want to say hi to anybody that you are? Is anybody listening to you? Is your family listening to you? Hi, Mom.

for my internship and my sister pat called the request line of the radio station and said i just wanted to put a plug in for my brother who is there i swear to you and the the dj that was on the air was a guy by the name of pat reynolds he's now bow reynolds he does mornings in florida uh on one of the big country stations down there keeps their names but yeah pat pat bow reynolds pat reynolds put her on the radio and and basically goes well he has he down here for does he talk like this and he started doing like the whole joke and thing like that and then I started working as an intern at the radio station and then I got on the air part time and stuff like that

that is such an ant pat story is that not an ant pat story

yeah like that was like the cool she was like I just want to make sure he got there safely is he okay and you got the internship uh I ended up getting it let's go yeah and actually that was my that was I would I will say this to you and this is something that I think we all kind of have an idea of because we all did internships that were uh you know important they need to bring internships back i agree but i will say if i didn't get that internship i'm not where i am today because that internship then led to me being able to make you know demo tapes and learn how to make mistakes and stuff like i wonder how

many amazing people are out there that the industry is missing out on because they don't have interns

well and i think that now with the ability to be able to go and podcast yourself like if i was somebody that was trying to get into this business, I'd buy podcast equipment at Guitar Center, and I would sit at home and I would just make myself a podcast and just put it out there.

But as an intern, like former intern, it's nothing like being in it. It's nothing like working on a show, being in the quote-unquote industry, seeing how the professionals do it, see how things operate. You can't get that at home with a microphone.

Well, here's the deal. You have to have an opportunity to make mistakes. And we make mistakes every single morning. And luckily, we're able to get away with them because people forgive us.

And you have to have an opportunity to get your foot in the door. And for a lot of people, it was internship. For all these people here today, this is the foot in the door.
