I don't think it's unusual to say this, But the greatest thing that could ever happen to a parent is when your child gets their driver's license and can drive you as your designated driver. It's one of the greatest moments ever as a parent because you now have somebody that can drive when you've had a couple pops. I always wanted to say that. Whenever I go out, you know, and a friend of mine is like a tough guy and he has drinks, he goes, calls him pops. I always go, God, I just don't know if I can pull that off. So Chelsea and I go to this restaurant that's right by our house called Lakes Grill. and we love going up there and they do heavy pours and drinks they're amazing and we'll go up there but we have to make sure luke comes with us to dinner so that he's our designated driver and it was funny because we were trying to figure out where he was yesterday he has he has a golf he's uh on the uh the golf team and so he was trying to like tell us where he was and we were like we want to go out but our driver is not here to take us and we want to drink and it got me having a conversation with Chelsea about the fact that we're going to lose that designated driver when he goes off to college. Like, it's going to suck.

What are we going to do? Yeah, he's your free Uber.

Our Uber costs are going to go through the roof at that particular moment. Did I ever tell you guys this about a friend of mine? And I'm going to throw this out there as a topic here. But a friend of mine, when we were younger, he was 14 years old, and his mom and dad and the whole family went out, and he had to drive home because his parents – this was before Uber was around.

Okay, because he had to be 14 in nine months or something. Something like that, yeah. Whatever.

And do you know the rules about this? And if you don't, I'm going to give them to you right now. Now, anybody ever let their child who has a learner's permit drive because you were drinking, do you know that in almost every single state it is actually against the law to do that, that you are still considered the driver of that vehicle?

Okay.

And so if you get pulled over or they get pulled over or they do something that causes any issues, they're going to breathalyze test you.

Oh, I kind of assume that, right? Because they're not licensed yet. You're supposed to be in charge.

But you know how many people I know have done that? When I say I know, I'm pointing to myself.

See, I got to be honest, I don't like to drive if I had one drink. I feel so worried about that.

Well, I don't have a liquor. I'm just having one beer with a meal. So you're sitting there for two hours that you can easily have a beer and it doesn't even register.

You know, I heard a story this morning on the news about these people that have a medical condition, especially if you're diabetic, you have this. You have a medical condition where you have not had alcohol, yet you test over the limit alcohol-wise. From what? Because of your... Like medication or something? The way that your blood sugar is. So you have a natural alcohol that is produced in your body, and there are these people. I'll have to find the story for you because when I saw it, I was like, this is crazy. But the story is that—

You know what they call it? Auto-brewery syndrome. Yeah. For real? Yeah. It's a very rare, very rare condition, and most people can get diagnosed with it, so you can't just use that as an excuse if you get pulled over.

But there are people, though, that have blown over the limit, and yet they've not had any alcohol, and they've had to, like, go to a doctor to ask the doctor, you know, to testify for them because they were going to, you know, get a DUI for that. That's crazy. Isn't that nuts? Yeah. I'll get that for you coming up here in a second. First off, Mojo in the Morning Show. What's going on, Andrea?

Hi. Hi. So I was just calling, referring to driving, you know, parents around when you don't have a license. And I grew up in the country, and this was a pretty normal thing for my parents to, you know, make me drive home from a friend's house and stuff. You know, after we had hung out there and they had drank a little bit too much, it wasn't, you know, out of the ordinary for them to have me drive home.

I think when we were younger, and I also lived in like a rural area, I think that that happened all the time.

Hi. Hey. Hi. When I was, like, 17, my papa, my grandpa, he would call me from the strip club and have me come pick him up because he was too drunk to drive.

Your papa had you pick him up at the strip club?

Yeah, he used to go to Atlanta in Lincoln Park. Oh, wow.

Is that not the greatest ever? What did your mama think of that?

Oh, he would always tell me that he gave all these strippers so much money and he had to go home and get in his drawer and get some more to give me gas money.

And how old were you at the time that this happened? 17. Oh, my God. Isn't that crazy?

I had just got my license because I didn't get my license until I was 17. So as soon as I got my license, he would call me and ask me to come and get him, like, at least a couple times a month.

Morning. So when I was 15, my stepmom got a call from the casino. My dad had gone to the casino, MGM, and he got so drunk that they were like, you need to come get him. You've got to pick him up. We're going to kick him out. So I went with her, and I had to drive him and his car home. And I was 15. I didn't have a license

it was though i mean that's where i grew up unfortunately you know i live in the city now and you can't i i agree with the last mom you know i would never let my kids do that i'm not a big drinker myself so you know that taught me to you know not drink yeah what was the situation um my dad and my grandfather always loved to go out and drink with you know all the family members and stuff and it was just a big thing you know um and the guys it was also like you know the strip club unfortunately oh my god was within region though you know that was i guess their best thing back then was that you know everything was close together and it was always oh we just live around the block or it's just two blocks it'll be okay this is good practice for you when you

administrators kept getting complaints that he smelled of alcohol during the

The school day, I had a meeting and I was forced to take a blood test and a breath test and I had alcohol in my system. I had no idea.

The father of two lost his job and his teaching license.

My mother started researching. She actually just Googled, can your body create alcohol? And autobrewery syndrome popped up.

Auto-brewery syndrome, or ABS, is a rare condition in which the body makes alcohol. Patients with the syndrome have high levels of yeast and fungus in their guts. When they eat carbohydrates, their body makes alcohol. Dr. Prasanna Wickremasingha on Staten Island is one of the few doctors who's been studying the syndrome and treats patients all over the world.

I personally have nearly 30 cases now.

Including Manjardo, who now lives in Florida. He also treated Donato Giannato of Old Bridge Township. Giannato died in 2020, but his wife says he suffered with ABS for years. After dinner, he would start slurring his speech, and I kept saying to his doctors, I don't know, he kind of looks like he's drunk. Dr. Wick Remes-Singha tested Giannato as he does with all his patients in a controlled hospital environment. The patient drinks a sugary liquid, and then their blood is tested for alcohol.

I've seen them go three times the DWI level in two hours.

Ray Lewis of Oregon didn't know he had ABS until he was slapped with drunk driving charges after crashing a tanker he was driving at work. The judge said under the law, Lewis still had to be charged.

Being charged with a crime for having a rare medical disease is just bizarre.

Dr. Wick Remes-Singha says he believes antibiotics are a trigger of autobrewery syndrome. He says he uses antifungals to treat ABS, and people who have ABS have to pay very close attention to their diets. The doctor is now working on releasing a large study about ABS because he wants to raise awareness within the medical community of the syndrome.

By the way, interesting story for anybody that does the weight loss of Ozempic and Magorno and all that stuff. They say that people who have that have to be careful because if you have alcohol, you could one drink be over the legal limit because of your blood and what it does for you because it's a diabetic medication.
