00:02:13 - 00:02:19 | Speaker 7:

Although you will not hear her voice now because you'll hear her on the phone, you'll hear it on the radio because she's coming in to talk to us here today.

00:02:19 - 00:02:19 | Speaker 3:

Hello.

00:02:20 - 00:02:37 | Speaker 7:

So you had a topic. First off, I love this topic. but it was what we learned when we were doing our pre-show meeting that I think I even loved more than just your topics okay so where do you start so start with your topic so no givebacks

00:02:37 - 00:03:13 | Speaker 1:

all right so my mom and dad and I were having dinner yesterday and as we were having conversation my dad brought up how my grandmother on their wedding day my parents wedding day she said there's no givebacks so she's like once you have cyan you cannot give her back to us And I thought it was interesting because I had never told my parents this, but a guy that I was promised to in the past, so they knew I was promised to him, they just didn't know what his mom would say to me. So his mom told me, now that you guys are promised, you cannot give him back to me. And I thought it was the biggest red flag ever.

00:03:13 - 00:03:18 | Speaker 2:

So no give backs, meaning, so you were talking about your grandma?

00:03:18 - 00:03:22 | Speaker 7:

Yeah. So basically, you can't screw up this marriage. That's it.

00:03:22 - 00:03:24 | Speaker 2:

You're married, you're married, there's no out.

00:03:24 - 00:03:42 | Speaker 7:

And I love, because I think that your idea for this topic was, your idea was, hey, you know, did anybody, what did they say to you when you, you know, were mad or getting married? Like, what did the in-laws say? What is stuff like that? But you just said something very interesting that we all got just as intrigued with this time. You were promised to someone.

00:03:42 - 00:03:46 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, and I've never told any of you this. I don't think I've mentioned it ever.

00:03:46 - 00:03:49 | Speaker 7:

So tell everybody what your background is.

00:03:50 - 00:03:51 | Speaker 1:

So I'm Chaldean.

00:03:51 - 00:03:51 | Speaker 7:

Okay.

00:03:51 - 00:04:00 | Speaker 1:

Which means that when we get married traditionally, we do a promising, which is a tenetha, and then we do an engagement and then a wedding.

00:04:00 - 00:04:00 | Speaker 7:

Okay.

00:04:00 - 00:04:11 | Speaker 1:

So the promising is basically just the groom's side coming to the bride's side and saying, like the family, and saying, hey, can we have your daughter's hand to join in our family?

00:04:11 - 00:04:14 | Speaker 2:

Can that happen at any age or is that typically like when you're a little bit older?

00:04:15 - 00:04:18 | Speaker 1:

It's usually when you're like probably around 19, 20 and up.

00:04:18 - 00:04:21 | Speaker 2:

Okay. And so did that happen to you? Yes. You had a promising.

00:04:21 - 00:04:39 | Speaker 1:

I had a promising but it wasn't like a party or anything it was basically just our families combining with each other and getting to know each other and then he asked for my hand to my dad wow and your dad said he said yeah yes yeah to clarify is the promising an arranged marriage

00:04:39 - 00:04:45 | Speaker 4:

or is it just you it's the next step in courting when you you guys met naturally started dating

00:04:45 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 1:

so I can go either way okay we met organically but like my parents for example had both been promised right but in a pre-arranged way they were promised they were promised to each other or promised they were promised beforehand okay beforehand

00:05:00 - 00:05:03 | Speaker 4:

So in their situation, it was more prearranged.

00:05:03 - 00:05:11 | Speaker 2:

So they were actually more arranged. And so both your mom and your dad had a marriage that ended up in a divorce before.

00:05:11 - 00:05:15 | Speaker 6:

And the situation where you were promised, is that something you were interested in?

00:05:16 - 00:05:37 | Speaker 4:

I honestly, no. I'll be honest. At the time, no. But I thought it was the right thing to do because, I mean, I want kids one day. I want a marriage. I want a family. So do you have any contact? Who is this guy? I dated him for about two and a half years We have no contact whatsoever Even his family has blocked me on everything I don't know what they're up to

00:05:37 - 00:05:40 | Speaker 2:

What ended the promise? What made you guys decide not to?

00:05:41 - 00:05:44 | Speaker 4:

He was really toxic He just was not a good person

00:05:44 - 00:05:49 | Speaker 2:

And then This was when you were That was young, 19

00:05:49 - 00:05:53 | Speaker 4:

I started dating him at 19 and then we got promised I was 21

00:05:53 - 00:05:58 | Speaker 3:

Looks good in your heart you knew This wasn't the right way, this wasn't the right time

00:05:58 - 00:06:17 | Speaker 2:

So I'm so intrigued by arranged marriage because I have to be perfectly honest with you. If I were a single guy, I would want to do an arranged marriage. Dating sucks. Who wants to date? I mean, come on. Think of this, Megan. If we could just seriously, okay, here you go. Boop, boop, boop. Bop, bop. That's what it sounds like.

00:06:17 - 00:06:26 | Speaker 6:

Full on. I'm down more and more for arranged marriages. I have been watching the Married at First Sight and the Love in Climb.

00:06:26 - 00:06:32 | Speaker 5:

Indian matchmaking. It is a great, so two seasons, it's so interesting, and it's all about that.

00:06:32 - 00:06:44 | Speaker 6:

If you have two people on board and, like, are into this, I feel like it could be very successful. And you look at arranged marriages and their success rates, and they're typically happier couples. Way less divorce.

00:06:44 - 00:06:59 | Speaker 3:

It seems unorthodox to us in Western culture because we're not used to it, but there's a different mindset going into those relationships that it seems the couple is fighting harder to make it work because they don't see divorce as an option. They're supposed to keep their family alive.

00:06:59 - 00:07:09 | Speaker 6:

You hit the nail on the head, and it's the mindset. Like, it can't be done against your – like, if you're the one choosing to do it, I'm so interested in it. I feel bad for people who don't choose to do it.

00:07:10 - 00:07:50 | Speaker 2:

But no givebacks. No givebacks on this whole thing. I'm sorry, you guys. If we're doing an arranged marriage, you're doing this thing. It's funny. Chelsea's dad, going back to Lydia's thing, Chelsea's dad said something kind of like that. And I think Chelsea's dad's thing was, if I have to come and have to take Chelsea back, you are not going to be very happy. Like, that was kind of his talk, basically, to me, that that was the case. Because he knew that if that was the case, I was probably not a very good guy or there was going to be a bad situation. But Omar is on with us right now. Omar, what's going on?

00:07:51 - 00:08:18 | Speaker 1:

How's it going, guys? So I was just wanting to comment on the arranged marriage thing. I was arranged with my wife, but it's, like, more not in the sense that a lot of people think. You know, we were introduced by family. We were allowed to talk for, like, a year and stuff. And at the end of the year, we're like, yeah, you know, I can see this going somewhere. And we've been married for seven years now, have two kids. And so, you know, it's not as bad as people think.

00:08:18 - 00:08:22 | Speaker 5:

But you were allowed to say no thank you after you got to know your now wife.

00:08:23 - 00:09:09 | Speaker 1:

Yeah, because actually before my, so I was extremely busy with school and work. And to be honest, I never really had time to date. So when my mom approached me, she's like, hey, are you okay with me? You know, finding somebody for you, I said, you know, why not? And originally I was very against it because I was like, oh, that's weird. Because, you know, culturally I'm from Pakistan, born and raised here. Same thing with my wife. I just thought that was a very old way, fashion way of doing things. But obviously, as life takes over, you get busy. So actually, I met someone before my wife, and I didn't really like the person. We talked for like maybe two, three months, and I told my wife, I'm like, yeah, this ain't it. But then obviously, after I met my wife, and things went pretty great.

00:09:09 - 00:09:31 | Speaker 2:

You were good. I would wonder about that. If you did the arranged marriage, is this like gym class when they pair you up with somebody in gym class To do a game And you get paired up with the person That you don't want to get paired up with You know what I mean Or science projects or projects in school You ever had that where the teacher says Yeah, you guys got to work together And you're like, but he's the dummy Or she's the dummy

00:09:31 - 00:09:32 | Speaker 6:

I'm going to have to do everything

00:09:32 - 00:09:43 | Speaker 2:

Is that what a ranch marriage is like But then at the end of the whole deal When you do those project pairings Like the teachers do You end up being friends with the people That you end up doing the projects with

00:09:43 - 00:09:50 | Speaker 1:

Yes, absolutely I mean, my wife is definitely my best friend. So, you know, I think I'm pretty lucky in that sense.

00:09:50 - 00:09:52 | Speaker 2:

That's awesome. Yeah. Good to hear, man. That's awesome.

00:09:53 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 5:

I guess my question is, and not so much to him because he, you know, he got to know his wife for a year before they, they.

00:10:00 - 00:10:16 | Speaker 2:

we're married but like do you miss out on that like the falling in love is but you still fall in love sometimes yeah i guess you're right i i mean i on the show right the indian matchmaking shows a lot of them end up do they do fall in love but like and my question is love that

00:10:16 - 00:10:28 | Speaker 4:

important that sounds weird if that sounds weird but if you're in a marriage do you always love your partner or is what important your trust and your friendship your partnership yeah your

00:10:28 - 00:11:20 | Speaker 5:

partnership well i think it definitely takes away the physical first and now you know what i mean because because you really can't look at the physical because now you got to get right you're diving right into right the emotional aspect and the family aspect of the whole deal so yeah very interesting very interesting i did not know that about lydia isn't it you know what's weird you know it actually could be a really good topic like what did you find out about somebody after knowing them for a long period of time you know think about this we we've worked with lydia since lydia was you know part-time promotions person working here at the radio station you know she worked in the promotions team and then she kind of worked her way in to working on the uh on the radio show and all the time that we're together we don't really know anything about the people that we work with and when we hear a story like that and it makes me sit there and i i think we We should do background checks on all these people.

00:11:21 - 00:11:30 | Speaker 3:

No, I'm just kidding. I mean, you guys have all met Gina the Cleaning Lady. She's been working here for two decades. Love her. How many people know until I sat and talked with her one afternoon, she's a trained assassin.

00:11:32 - 00:12:19 | Speaker 5:

Are you joking? No, I'm not really. I can see it. I mean, can I tell you something? Have you ever seen Gina the cleaning lady carrying the boxes into the radio studio that were left outside by the UPS? She can bench 400. I'm not kidding you when I say this to you. This woman's job is to just be cleaning her, right? That's her job. She keeps everything so nice and clean and neat and stuff. I saw her doing that, and I'm like, we got to give her a raise or something. because it was just insane to see her lifting stuff and bringing it upstairs that truly was too heavy for me. And, of course, I said, Gina, we put that over here.

00:12:20 - 00:12:50 | Speaker 7:
