Opening day is truly a holiday. It's a national holiday. It's a party. Kind of like how you see, I guess, what, I don't know, the Thanksgiving games for the Tigers, you know?

Where it's like the game that you really want to go to because it's just something to be at. And it seems to me like opening day fever this year seems as hype because everybody's excited for the potential of what these Tigers could be because they're young and they're pretty talented. So it's also the number one ditch day in Detroit. And this poll was just recently done by one of the sports apps. And I thought this was actually pretty cool. One in 10 Tigers fans who attend opening day lie to their boss, either claiming that they're working from home or they're sick on opening day. And with it being an opening day Friday, is that not a perfect time to do it? And we got tickets, by the way. We're going to be giving away tickets. We're going to be broadcasting from Comerica Parks Field, too, which is going to be fun. But I thought this would be a good topic to bring up and ask the question, has anybody ever been busted ditching work or calling in sick? Have you ever had where you told your boss that you weren't going to come in or you were going to take a day and then you got busted? And who has the craziest story of getting busted? and I'm looking for like total nuts stories because my favorites are always the and I'll never forget this phone call and it was years ago it might have been pre-shannon on the show but it was the person that ditched work because they wanted to have an extra long holiday weekend they said that they were really sick and then they were on I think it was channel four in Detroit doing an interview walking on the streets from arts beats and eats which is a festival that we had here and their boss saw them hanging out like with uh the news reporter paula tutman or something on the sidelines asking questions you know asking questions like on the streets like people you got to be careful yeah do you know yeah i've been to i don't know how many games countless games of uh the tigers i have been on television not because of any reason that they thought i was you know who i was from the radio station it was just the random fans screaming in the stands you know what i mean yeah and i've been you got to be careful or on somebody's social

media that's even worse because that's when the world becomes very small and you're in the

background of somebody's photo yeah this just happened at a pistons gang recently really at a dance cam and this guy was he wasn't even like up dancing i guess trying to be seen he was kind of still sitting in his seat but he was still kind of moving around yeah and the camera caught

him he gets on a jumbotron he doesn't realize it the person next to him like pats him tells him to

so i worked third shift and called in sick so i could go to a concert well my team lead also was at that concert two rows behind me and caught me that's great did

they do the whole tap on the shoulders thing or did they do a text message of a picture of your

back of your head she sent me a text message and asked me if i was at the concert and i looked around and we locked eyes and i knew it was over that is so did you get fired i did not but i did A warning.

So I don't ever lie about it. I'm just honest about it. My supervisor this year actually kept all the Fridays in April off just for me because we didn't know when it was after last year.

I do it every year.

You're that big of a fan. You go to all the opening days, huh?

Yeah, I've been going since I was 11. It's kind of like a birthday tradition with my parents because it's either just before, just after, or on my birthday.

So, yeah, I skipped work to go to Cedar Point. And I guess my boss, like, was looking on our news feed on Facebook and one of her friends posted, like, a selfie. and I was in the background and she busted me. That is a great story. What happened?

Did they fire you?

No, she was just like, if you want to take off, use a vacation date, not a sick day. And I was like, okay. She called me into my office. She was like, so how are you feeling? And I was like, I feel a lot better. She goes, yeah. And that's maybe to go to Cedar Point. I was like, wow.

Which is funny because

My face just turned, like, completely shocked. I was like, what are you talking about? And she, like, made a copy of it and printed the picture so she could show me.

Somebody told me that in human resources, you could get fired for calling in sick but using the sick day for a vacation day.

Can I ask that question? Why does it matter? You're gone. You are not in the office.

Because I think that their thing is preparation beforehand. I think that that's their point. If you're going to take a vacation day, you usually pre-do it ahead of time. You put them in a bind by doing that. But this is an interesting one because Elaine actually skipped school to go to the Tigers game. And your teacher saw you on TV?

Yeah. So it was in 1999, the last game at Tiger Stadium.

Oh, yeah. Before they moved over to Comerica. Yeah.

Yeah. My mom called me in absent. And my cousin and I went and enjoyed the game. We were just little teenagers. and we were on the big screen on Channel 4. My teacher was at home watching the follow-up on the game and he saw me on TV. Total Ferris Bueller's Bay Off experience.

Oh, that's beautiful. That is so great. Rachel, you got caught blowing off work and you were in a different state. Is that right?

That is right. My boss wanted me to come in. I've known this guy for 20 years. and it was always shorthanded with people answering calls for him. And I was like, no, I've got to take my son. You know, my best friends meet me in Tennessee halfway.

So you were in a different state, and what happened? Your boss saw you?

So my son and I flew into Orlando to go to my best friend's daughter's 16th birthday. And I told my boss that I was driving my son to Tennessee the meter halfway that I couldn't at work. Now, we were circling the airport. Oh, it's so bad.

I didn't get caught calling in sick, but one night, my husband was supposed to work at his second job, which was delivering pizzas, and he decided he wanted to call off so we could go to the casino up in Toledo, and as we're walking around, he accidentally bumps into somebody, and it ends up being his boss.

Oh, my God. Oh, no. He did get fired. Oh, he did? Really? Yeah. Oh, that sucks. Well, but it was a pizza job, right?

Yeah, it was a backup job just to make a little extra work. Yeah. We could do extra things with the kids, so it wasn't that big of a deal.

Yeah, so I called off on Valentine's Day. I just wanted to go get some stuff for my man. I went to an adult store, and all of a sudden I hear, hey, you, and I turn around, and it's my boss's brother. Oh, God. Wait, your boss's brother. Of all places. He never told, thank God, but I was mortified.

Yeah, because the boss's brother didn't want to call the boss up and say, hey, brother.

What did he have in his hand, by the way? What items? He just walked in, so he didn't have nothing yet. What did you have in your hand? I was just looking, thank God.

Oh, my gosh. By the way, I have to tell you, that's the reason why I can't go to those stores. If I'm doing something, I'm ordering it online because I go into those stores, it's going to be the one time I go, hey, Mojo. I'm like, oh, my God. Can we take a picture together? Yes. Oh, it's the worst. I think I did that one time. I think I was at a, what the hell was the store?

I was at Lover's Lane in Waterford there. and I'm inside this and there's a zap zone right next door. What? And one of our neighbor's kids was having a birthday party at zap zone and I walked into the lover's lane and they're like, Mr. C's over at the store next door.
