mojo in the morning show thanks for listening to us you can always listen to us anytime you want to by live listening in the morning on Detroit's channel 955 Grand Rapids Muskegon's 104.5 SNX or Toledo's 92.5 KISS FM and then of course on our podcasts that are throughout the day that you can check out uh search mojo in the morning wherever you get podcasts hopefully it's the iheart radio app so i uh um i want to talk about this because i i just don't uh know how he was able to get through it but i was so happy with how he came back my son just came back from a school retreat he goes to a catholic school so it's uh called kairos and other catholic school kids might know what it is because maybe they've gone on it before and had just an amazing time and i'm not going to get into you know the stuff that came you know came up with him because a lot of kids go to it and it just becomes a unbelievable life-changing moment but one of the things i did want to get into was he went four days phone-less oh phone free for four days which chelsea and i think were most excited about like we were most excited about him getting closer to his faith yeah but i have to be perfectly honest with you I don't think that you get closer to your faith unless you get rid of the phone for a little bit because that just takes up so much time but as a guy who is on his phone constantly I was sitting there thinking about how difficult that must have been he said that that it was wild did not have his phone and didn't even know what time it was at any time

00:03:35 - 00:03:40 | Speaker 5:

and that took it right that was part of the retreat yeah you had to leave you actually you

00:03:40 - 00:04:21 | Speaker 2:

had to leave it with them so you gave you gave it to them they locked up the phones and in the school and then they went off to the thing but the thing with the time that's another one too not knowing what time it is is one of those things where it's like oh boy what time like i would know what that is but i am on my phone constantly and i am blown away by anyone that can do like a phone free friday are there any listeners that have ever tried that or done like a phone free vacation or weekend or or spike you uh you were telling me the guy that engineered our saint patrick's day broadcast that we had he doesn't have a cell phone and i thought that was amazing not just

00:04:21 - 00:04:48 | Speaker 3:

on a personal level but also the fact that he's an audio engineer and it's his business like how does he how do you maintain a business without it because it seems like you need to be on call how do people contact him i have no idea does he have a home phone or email well our company contacts him through email back and forth and that's it and he cares he's got his laptop and then for that morning we were told her ipad he if we need anything in an emergency they gave they

00:04:48 - 00:04:54 | Speaker 5:

said to contact one of his workers i actually don't know how you know how you would function

00:04:54 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 3:

without owning a cell phone yeah i could do a day give it up for a day

00:05:00 - 00:05:01 | Speaker 1:

I don't know about a whole weekend.

00:05:01 - 00:05:08 | Speaker 6:

I couldn't navigate anywhere. That too, Megan. I would be lost. I'm so lost even with my phone.

00:05:08 - 00:05:17 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, I didn't want to say it. I know. I had my phone taken away by my family when we went on a vacation a couple of years back. I remember that.

00:05:17 - 00:05:19 | Speaker 1:

We were going to send a search party. We thought you died.

00:05:19 - 00:05:45 | Speaker 2:

It was unbelievable. It was really relaxing. And then after my surgery, I went 60 days, I think, without it. Chelsea gave it back to me with 30 days left. and I went 60 days and I will say this that it definitely was you know kind of tough at first but then you start realizing how relaxing it is because you don't have to sit there because I spend most of my day all going looking looking at it looking at it you know what I mean it's funny

00:05:45 - 00:06:04 | Speaker 1:

because even without looking at social media and stuff I've traveled to countries in far remote places with no service I still look at it because I want to see my steps and I want to and I want to take pictures and like it's become part of our lives for 7 000 reasons yeah if i if i was

00:06:04 - 00:06:15 | Speaker 6:

somewhere with my kids with lucy and smith i think i could do it because that that's where i get really panicky without my phone like if they were with me and i knew that they were safe i could

00:06:15 - 00:06:26 | Speaker 2:

probably go a weekend without my phone see i say that but my kids bore me so but but with that said your kids might be different i don't know my kids do do not

00:06:26 - 00:06:32 | Speaker 6:

for me very much keep me on my toes but wendy what's up it's mojo in the morning good morning

00:06:32 - 00:06:54 | Speaker 5:

i was calling to let you know i'm a middle school teacher and very often at the end of the hour i'll just say okay here's your homework for the weekend they all grunt and groan and i say how about you two to four hours to not use any technology no phone no video games no no nothing at all and some of them actually do it and and the ones that do really enjoy it it's wild because you know it's

00:06:54 - 00:06:58 | Speaker 1:

the toughest punishment you can hand down as a parent is to take away phone

00:06:58 - 00:07:04 | Speaker 6:

privileges. Yeah, that's a great prompt though. Like you hope that it plants a seed and like I said, a few students

00:07:04 - 00:07:10 | Speaker 5:

do it. They do and I sent an email home telling the parents I suggested it so that kind of helps a little bit too.

00:07:10 - 00:07:38 | Speaker 2:

Oh yeah. Parents gotta love that. I hate when my kids are on their phone because I don't get an opportunity to engage with them but this I thought was an interesting story too that I read. Dumb phones are on the rise for Gen Z getting tired of smartphones and wanting to limit their screen time, they're now calling the just regular phones that just have phone connection and text capabilities, they're calling them dumb phones.

00:07:39 - 00:08:02 | Speaker 6:

And people want those again. And my dad read this story the other day, and he sent it to me on Facebook Messenger, which is always really funny when I get a message from him there with a link. But he's like, look, see? And now that I have an iPhone, my old phone's trending again or back in style or whatever he said. I'm like, I know. My old boss's husband had a dumb phone. He was like, I can't call an Uber, but I can call a cab. And I was like, you know what?

00:08:03 - 00:08:04 | Speaker 3:

That's not what to have.

00:08:05 - 00:08:06 | Speaker 2:

Charity, what's up?

00:08:07 - 00:09:28 | Speaker 3:

Hey, I'm also a middle school teacher. And I have found that we have a lot of teachers that are also out of Canada. And so we have to use the WhatsApp to communicate in our learning community. Yeah. So for me, it's, you know, a double-edged sword because you're looking at your phone, but you're trying to be present with the kids. And Apple's new focus options has made it, I mean, a game changer because I can turn off everything but my WhatsApp or my, I have a high school student and I can keep his school on or, you know, just limit. and even to the point of like looking at my um email icon it won't show how many emails i have oh that's the best for me so for me it's like a big deal because i'll look at it and i'll be like i want to get rid of these you know i'm still type a and um so to have it completely removed have no number next to my text box nothing until i click on the text message icon i can see the text there but it just eliminates everything so I mean for me you know that's something that I've been encouraging my kids because you can you know label them differently but there's personal work you know lots of different ways you can utilize it but I think it's a great feature that's awesome

00:09:28 - 00:09:40 | Speaker 2:

yeah and you know what social media in general just not having that at all I mean even if you could go social media free for a couple of days what's up Linda hi I'm a first-time caller and I

00:09:40 - 00:09:43 | Speaker 4:

I'm excited to talk to you guys this morning. Yay. Good morning.

00:09:43 - 00:09:43 | Speaker 6:

Happy Friday.

00:09:45 - 00:10:21 | Speaker 4:

So my comment is where I live, something similar to Kairos. It's called the Great Banquet. And bless your son for going through that. I know how difficult it is. But for the phone. situation. I mean, it was the most freeing weekend I have ever had. And I haven't had one since. So to not know what time it is, no one can contact you. But I did cry before I went because I'm like, what if my kids need me? But you know, it was a great experience. And here's the thing that I

00:10:21 - 00:11:08 | Speaker 1:

realized is if there's an emergency, there's ways to get ahold of you, obviously, if you're doing it. But knowing that if you've got everybody there with you, like Shannon said, you know, you've got your kids and your family there with you, that you're spending more quality time and not, you know, sitting there on your phone the entire time. Because how many times have we, and this is for my family, gone out to eat and everybody is on their phone and nobody's even paying attention to each other. And so, but yeah, that's, I don't know necessarily when I can do this, but that's the one thing I want to do is I want to try to do, you know, try to do a month where every Friday it's a phone-free Friday. Because I always find Fridays are the days that are least important because we don't work the next morning. But, all right, it's Mojo on the Morning Show. Tyler Reddick here from 2311 Racing.
