we're searching i feel like we're getting closer and closer but i really need your support you guys in the studio and our listeners as well if they have a perspective because i don't have a dog in a fight either way my entire life i've been in public education proud member of detroit public schools all i know is public schools that's right that's right damn it same all i know is public schools yeah but some of the schools that we're touring and visiting and are thinking about sending josiah to are private schools and none of my i don't believe any of my family members have ever been enrolled in public or private education so i really don't know what the difference is what the pros are what the cons are now on these tours we've gone to one of the things that the private school has said is that public schools have to abide by whatever the state says should be taught so they can receive that state funding and private schools don't necessarily have to abide i don't know if that's good or bad but they kind of get to choose what's the reputation of the detroit public schools because people say they ain't teaching them the teachers are are there

negative why did i because there's a lot of charter schools too and yeah and i see this i was on the

school board for a charter school in detroit for a decade yeah yeah covenant house academy i always

thought that there was one of those things where there was like an image or a stigma to certain

schools i think there's a negative stigma for the entire city of detroit yeah you know what i mean it's been that way for years and years and years and education was just one of those but i see it

with public schools in the suburbs too because our kids started off in public schools they went to west bloomfield public schools and then eventually chelsea wanted them to have a little bit of religion in their life so then we transferred them to a catholic school which i will say this to you out of the both i think it's based on the kid not the actual school um yep and i think that joe and luke needed extra pushing jacob didn't jacob would have been great at anything like jacob would have been great homeschooling um where the others wouldn't and um so they so we kind of changed it but i will say this to you the one thing i did like about going to the catholic school thing was i liked the fact that it was a little bit smaller smaller classrooms class sizes and i honestly i hate to say this the teachers didn't bitch at all and no offense to teachers because teachers have a hard job but i always felt like when when they were in the public school that the kids the teachers were always complaining about what they weren't getting and you know all the bad stuff we're in the catholic school they were making even less than the public school teachers do. I didn't hear the teachers sitting there complaining about things.

More so speaking in terms of them being supported in their role. I felt like having a resource to get things done, all that.

I felt like the teachers that the kids had, and it wasn't all of them, but there were some of them that would always sit there and complain about, we can't do that. No, we can't do it. That's not, that's not, the state won't let us do it or whatever. The superintendent won't allow us to do this stuff. And then when they went to Catholic school, you never heard that. And I think a lot might've been that maybe the parents stepped up a little bit more and helped out a little bit more. um and there were some in the public school that just didn't have the means to to do that yeah but i didn't ever see the teachers complaining like this school doesn't pay me enough it never came i've ever not in any in luke went from kindergarten or pre-k all the way through high school joe and jacob went to just high school at the public or at the private school never did they ever have that so it's interesting um what are the uh the ideas are you is you are you gonna try to get him into a school like how you did more of an arts art school are you gonna get him into a school that's more technical based because he's got such a great mind when it comes my goal would be art

because that's something that not only does he enjoy doing now but he's already mentioned that this is what i want to do for the rest of my life so getting him familiar with you know certain artists his thing but get him familiar with different mediums that maybe he hasn't been exposed to before that maybe he could find interest in but he's like a 4.0 student so i don't want to only support the art and then not care about the mathematics and the sciences and all of that so if there's like a happy medium where they support both and give what is he what is he like because

you said he've toured all these schools and obviously he's been with you what is he kind

of leaning towards he liked the last school we went to he did which was a public or private it's a private school yeah what is his mom like she liked it too yeah we just want to your point we want to find the best thing for joe but i want us to be incredibly intentional and not just say okay here's a neighborhood school or this this school is five minutes up the road it's convenient let's

just go there like i don't want to operate like that can i just say this he's moved a bunch of schools since i've known you probably like two yeah two and he went virtual so i think i went to the same school from start to finish and i feel like that helped me a lot friendship wise consists indeed what's up heather what are your thoughts my thoughts are that private school is

definitely much better than public school public school it just seems that they pump them out and there's so many kids per class that like they don't get the attention or the care that they need to grow where do your kids go private school uh my kids are all grown up and gone and where did they go well when one went to a catholic school two went to charter schools and the fourth one just preferred to stay in public school which she didn't want to go into yeah a private school But, like, I find the ones that were in private schools were much better educated.

I was a public school kid through. Yeah, I was a public school kid through and through. And I feel like I got, and shout out to Croce Hill Public Schools, I feel like I got such a great education all the way through. And so it's interesting now, like, Wes's kids go to private school. Mine have been in public school. And then when it came time to decide where Lucy was going to go to middle school, like this became a discussion for us to have. And it's a world that I don't know anything about because I had such a positive experience in public school that that wasn't even on my radar.

You know, that's another thing I think about, too, though, is like to your point about I had such a positive experience. I'm just a kid. So, like, I really don't know anything beyond. I didn't know any different. You know what I mean? Yeah. So I'm like, I don't want to.

But some kids have horrible experiences, you know, bullying and things like that. I think schools are different than when we went to school, though. Like, I really do. I don't know. Maybe they're not. And I just looked at it differently through kid eyes. But I felt like I went to Catholic school for 12 years. And all my buddies went to the public school. They had a great time. Like, they had more, you know, fun. But they also got really highly, you know, good education and stuff. Like, they did good, you know, in college, and they actually had really good careers. But I just feel like nowadays, it just seems like it's a different world out there. The other thing, too, is getting into colleges is another thing. Like, I feel like all these kids get so much pressure going into colleges, and sometimes I think that there are, there's an advantage to what school you go to. Yeah. Yeah. Without a doubt.

And so I drive my son, my commute's an extra hour and a half for my son in the morning during school, the school year, just so I can take him to a different public school district because I do not like the one that I'm in. And I can't afford private school, which I would love to do. But when looking into it, it's so expensive.

Wow, that is a lot of time.

Is that a school of choice?

So, yeah, so I live in Centerline, and then I drive out to Utica School in Macomb, and then I come down to work right down the street from you guys in Corktown. Yes, you are incredible. So it's a bit of a hike. I mean, you're a great mom for doing that and recognizing that. I'm not going to take that education away from him and, like, rip him away from all his friends just for the convenience of, you know, a bus or a school around the corner. when I was not impressed with even Kid Starter Roundup.

Can I also say this, though? In defense of the parents that can't do that, their circumstances could be different. The idea that you do that is wonderful. You're a great mom, but so is the moms who are really focused on making sure that their kids get a good education and don't have the time to do that driving.

Yeah, absolutely. If they're bringing their kids to school, hey, get those kids in school no matter where they are. They need that education.

Hi. Good morning. What's going on? First of all, I want to say, first time, long time. It is on the phone. Yes. I've been waiting for that. Okay, I am a public school teacher. I am very passionate about public schools. maybe to a fault but i want to say first of all from the education experience that josiah would get personally i believe that public school teachers um are better supported because of their unions and they're paid better so they oftentimes want to stay in their job and have that consistency throughout the year and also private schools don't always have to have certified teachers okay they will like take someone and maybe pay for them to get like a year-long emergency thing before they actually are certified and have that degree when you say they're better

supported and better paid are they also better protected when it comes to like some of the

bad teachers get to stick around a lot yes but there's yes and no to that they are better protected because they can't just get fired for no reason. Like we see on TikTok there are some private school teachers that love their kids and then they just get fired because they said something wrong and a parent didn't like it. The union will stick up for the good ones

as well. No, I need a private school teacher on the phone. Oh, you know what? I need to hear the other side. You know who you sound like, by the way? And this is kind of wild to hear you talk. I don't know if anybody else got this. She sounds like Remember Miss Teen, South Carolina? Do you remember that one? No, don't say head and such.

But she can actually communicate her thoughts, whereas Miss Teen, South Carolina, could not.
