have this morning Shannon back in studio with us after chaperoning for Lucy's field trip which it was a two day field trip. I like two day field trips. Yeah it was 5th grade

camp so it was big. I still remember going to 5th grade camp. 5th grade camp

where do you go in the Detroit area to camp? Where's the place?

So this was, I want to shout it out because we go there for Girl Scout camp tour. We did Camp Copenaconic in Fenton. Okay. Yeah. Shout out to our camp counselor, Dean, who was fantastic for two days dealing with all of us. How many kids

are there total? And then how many are you

chaperoning? So I think there were like 80 plus kids, if I remember correctly. We had 17. I had 17 in my group. Oh my

gosh. Is it you by yourself or was there

another mom with you? No, it's you, it was myself and three other moms. Oh, wow. So there were four of us to the 17. 17 fifth graders. Let me tell you i love my daughter i love her friends i'm fifth grader out and they weren't for the most part and i'm not just saying this to sugarcoat they were all pretty good i mean normal like you know things that happened they were they were pretty good are the girls uh boy crazy and the boys boy girl crazy what are they i mean not really no kind of just you know like the boys stuck with the boys and the girls stuck with the girls okay yeah all right because it's funny i

think back to when I was in the fifth grade and I think the fifth grade, one of those things, you always wanted to go on the field trips because the field trips is where you could actually be assigned to be with people that you wanted to be assigned with. I was always in the group that I didn't have one friend in the group. Yeah. They would always, they separated us. Separated the guys that were the troublemakers.

It is so interesting. First off, I'm so appreciative that you guys let me out of here for two days to be able to do this because it it it meant a ton to lucy and i will be forever grateful because i will never forget those two days sorry you're gonna

be picking up the slack for us yeah i got some extra work here for you um but there was a moment

where and it was so accidental how it happened i had to discipline loose in front of everybody so we're sitting in this little teeny teeny tiny very warm cabin that smelled like reptiles because that's what they were doing was learning about reptiles and like passing these snakes and lizards and turtles and things around in a circle and the the camp counselor dean who i just mentioned who was in charge of us kept telling the kids you have to talk with quiet voices because the animals get really scared. Obviously, they're used to being handled by kids, but they still get really scared. And the kids were excited, and this was like right before dinner, and so everybody was like bouncing off the wall, and they were being so loud. And they had been asked several times to be quiet, be quiet, be quiet, some of the other parents. And finally, I was like, you guys, we need to listen to Dean and be quiet. And Lucy looked at me, and she goes, geez, Mom, you don't have to be such a Karen. And my immediate Knee jerk response Was to say to her very tersely Lucy Grace And everybody got really quiet

And looked at me

And they did that Oh your middle name is Grace You got the middle name And her eyes got so wide She looked at me And I was like oh my gosh I'm so sorry Like I realized what I did was like You know big no no in front of friends

when you said you got to be quiet like that i said it's everybody it scared me that just saying

that that was a little like uh because they were being so loud and and and truly they have been asked multiple times and i was like you guys dean's asking you to be quiet we all need to be quiet and um you don't want anybody to get bit by these animals we don't we don't that would be bad

just you know be good listeners but the funny part was she handed it right back to me in front of everybody and she goes Shannon Nicole after I said Lucy Grace to her

I was like oh you little I have one thing to say and that's good luck cause she's what 11, 10 10 yeah good luck

did you ever want your parents to chaperone because I never wanted my parents to have a chaperone. Like, I never wanted that to happen. And I think that there are certain kids that want your parents to chaperone because it's kind of fun. And then there are certain kids that they're like, I do not. I'm embarrassed by my parents. I don't want them there.

There were, like, you try so hard to be, like, really, like, kind and loving, you know, to all these kids. But I said to one of my really good friends who was a chaperone with me, Christy, I was like, I know I'm not supposed to think this, but I want to trunchbull some of these kids, like, so bad.

hi actually so my dad it wasn't like a chaperone but um my dad was my teacher for freshman year in high school and we've always just like butted heads and one day he kicked me out of class oh boy and was like well you better not go anywhere because i know where you live so i was like where am i gonna go so i had to sit outside the classroom and i was just so embarrassed and then all the time we would get in like these little fights and i'd be like well i'm gonna go home and tell mom on you for what you just said in class and he's like oh i'm so scared of that or uh anytime well he would just always threaten to like kick me out or do something just really embarrass me in front of people and bring up

My son, all the kids in the class used to fight to come to be with me because on my van I had the small TV. So we would have movies and snacks on the way to the field trip or wherever we were going. If we went to the park, I was the only parent who knew how to put worms on hooks and take off fish.

the chaperone always i think through all of my elementary school kindergarten to sixth grade He chaperoned all but one field trip and got recognized at our banquet in 6th grade. Oh, that's so cute.

Hey, yeah, my senior trip, we went to Six Flags. My mom carried all of our cigarettes for us. They didn't use your back, Shannon, because they needed some chaperones while you were back. Oh, that's so funny.

Yeah, we did, didn't we? This place was out of control. The cigarettes. I love it. Misfit Victor, you chaperoned your kids' field trips. I can't believe they would allow you to chaperone one of those.

Let me tell you something. And I'm chaperoning something tonight, too. But the first time I ever did a chaperone, I went to the Kids' Hands-On Museum in Ann Arbor. Yeah. My son's class. They put me in charge of eight kids. I came home. My wife goes, how was it? I go, I would have rather carried bricks for 12 hours than do this with these kids. They don't pay teachers enough for what they have to go through. But tonight, we're leaving. I'm chaperoning a Washington, D.C. trip. Oh, my God.

Can I tell you something? My mom did that, and that was my favorite thing in the world to have her there. That's big.

I'm looking at the rules. When you get there at 6 in the morning, then we're going to Gettysburg and walking 83 miles. You get back to the hotel room, and these kids are under lockdown. They're not allowed to leave the room after 8 p.m.

They taped us in, I remember.

so i was a chaperoning fifth grade camp um for my son and it was a week-long camp actually and a married mom and a married dad wound up hooking up baby cookies and the sugar shack

what wait hold on stop for a second because your voices guys it's hard to hear you you were chaperoning a field trip and one of the other dads and mom chaperoning ended up hooking up with each other on the field trip yeah where was the field trip to we were um at overnight winter camp way up north oh my gosh and this has become a scandal like did it cause for a breakup

of a relationship or did nobody know about it at home oh yeah no it is uh this was quite some time ago now and the two are actually married oh and um it was huge scandal at the time so yes it was uh quite uh quite an ordeal wow that's cool chaperones were we knew what was kind of happening because they didn't do anything to help support the rest of the chaperones other than they need

chaperones for the chaperones uh one last call because of uh lydia says this is a good one too wendy you there yes i'm here hi wendy we're talking about shannon coming back from chaperoning

lucy's fifth grade camp field trip what's up all right so my parents were very involved they went to all the field trips and all that and then in high school they needed chaperones for like the homecoming dance that the student council would put on so the parents had a meeting before and they were told, okay, you're going to need to check the bathrooms for smokers and go outside and make sure no one's drinking. So my mom would knock on the bathroom door and announce that she was coming in so the girls could put everything away and tell them, but I don't want to get anyone in trouble to put stuff away. Then my dad got tired of standing around while everyone was dancing, so he went out there and started dancing with everybody. Oh, no. And the principal had to tell him that, you know, you're not welcome back. He got fired as a chaperone. Yeah, they were fired. And then they would totally warn the kids. Because my mom, then the punch bowl, we had to work the punch bowl and the dessert table. My mom would come and say, you girls go have a good time. I got this. Go out and party.

Oh, my God. The punch bowl had something in it, I'm sure.

Oh, I don't know. But, yeah. That's why Dad was on the dance floor.
