This is the Bishop Statement at Bishop State Community College. We want you to hear what our students, educators, and business leaders have to say.

I would say Bishop State's like a home for people. It may not be like a four-year where you have a dorm, you have a roommate, you have a rec center, but it's still a place you can go meet new people, classmates, people in the hallway, make friends with advisors on all these teachers and everything like that. It's just a place you can feel like yourself and not try to be that you don't want to be. With this program, I learned networking a lot. We've had two dinners with heads of different companies dealing with shipping or even game design builds, dealing with AutoCAD or 3D modeling. So really being able to meet new people or meet heads of new people has been really helpful. I don't come from a wealthy family, so four years were kind of not out the picture, but less probable for me to go to. Bishop State with my scholarship, it cut my price in half and made it way easier for me to go to school for the same 12 credits I would go for a four-year.

Shannon's had a little lack of sleep. I've had a little lack of sleep, both for kind of similar but different reasons.

I slept good.

Shannon came in this morning and was discussing, we had tornadoes that were in our area, and the tornado warning sirens were going off. And to show you the opposite of how we live, Shannon, explain what you did last night.

So Wes and I went out to dinner. We stayed up and watched, we were watching the Dateline about that Brian Koberger case, whatever. So we were already up late. I finally fall asleep and just after midnight Wes shakes me and he's screaming get the dogs run downstairs and I'm like what what are you talking about what's happening and then I could hear the tornado sirens in my town going off they were so loud so I my heart starts racing so fast I I grabbed Charlie under one arm I've got fat Bo my puppy under the other arm Wes gets his dog willow and we run in the basement i you guys i've never heard the tornado sirens go off other than

the testing on a saturday or whatever really yeah really so wait a second so you so you guys went down to the basement we have no kids right now by the way so it's just okay okay now this is interesting because if you had kids maybe i understand that last night the alarms go off also in my neighborhood and i get up and i'm quickly actually not quickly because it's hard for me now to just get out of a bed quickly i have to kind of like maneuver myself and kind of do the one two three all right up i'm like all right chelsea we got to go to the basement all right we got to hold on a second and luke's home with us because luke's home from school luke we got to go to the basement chelsea and luke were both no we're staying right here

the reason i ran though is wes had pulled the shades up so i could see what was happening outside and it was i mean it was wild that storm so i got really scared and if it were him I'd still probably go in the basement I get worried about the dogs and then I have wanted to cry I feel like I should call Andrew my ex-husband I want to make sure that the kids are okay I want to make sure that they're going in the basement and then here's the crazy part so finally it subsides and he said okay first off my basement is my stepson's room it is disgusting so after about five minutes down there I'm like Wes can we please go back upstairs It smells so bad down here It's gross We go back upstairs and about 40 minutes later The alarm goes off The alert goes off on my phone And that is jarring And at that point I'm like I'm not going back downstairs

I'm trying to tell my family about the actual last... Remember the tornadoes that ripped through East Lansing? You can still see the remnants of it with the trees.

Is that what I see when I'm going to Lansing?

Yeah, it looks like a... A movie? What it looks like is it looks like a nuclear war happened out there.

And you have to remember all of those people that were interviewed on the news said it happened so fast. See, if your dumb ass was still in your bed because you were too lazy to go in your basement.

I wanted to go down. My dogs wanted to go outside. I'm like, they wanted to go anywhere. They wanted to get flown away from you. They were freaking out. Like, they didn't know what was going on.

And they were hollering, hee, hee, hee, hee the whole time.

I'm like, oh, my God.

Sirens killing their ears.

It reminded me of living in Chaldean, Chaldean, Chaldeaville, or what do we call it? Dearborn? No, I live in West Bloomfield, where every night in the summertime, everybody's shooting off fireworks. My dogs go crazy.

I'm surprised, though, because Wes loves listening like me to rain sounds and thunderstorms all night. I thought he'd be heaven.

He stayed upstairs and put me and the dogs in the basement, and he was going back and forth to check on it. Okay. What's up?

You were screaming at your phone. I'm here, Mojo. I'm here. I'm not in a tornado. What's going on?

I got you now. Yeah, you sound loud and clear. That was my fault. Use your air.

Okay. Well, happy Friday. I was laughing because last night my daughter, who doesn't even live with us anymore, called us to ask if she should go down in the basement.

Oh, because she was worried? Was there a first time away from you guys?

Yeah. Yeah. And so I said, well, of course you should. You know, my mom always made me go down in the basement. So it wasn't happening in my neighborhood yet. So, you know, we, I told her to go down there. And so sure enough, like five minutes later, you know, or so it started happening in my neighborhood. So I get up, I take the dog, but my husband was the same way. Yeah, I'm not going. Hey, better safe than sorry.

I think, yeah, I think it's funny. The people that actually chase after them. What's up, Heather? How are you doing?

So, like, I have a bad habit of when I hear tornado sirens or a bad storm coming, that type of thing. I get all excited, and I go to the garage and watch them.

You like to watch them? You're that person. I am that person. You're the reason why we got all those videos of everybody doing this last night.

Yes. I even stood out in the middle of a Category 5 hurricane disc to see what it was like.

You're nuts. You're a storm chaser. They call them storm chasers when you do that.

It's amazing.

That movie Twister, I don't know. After seeing that movie, I don't know if I would want to do it. Tia, you're also one of those, huh? You like to watch the storms?

Yeah, actually, my whole family is the type of family to do it to. And we basically just watch for funnels. And if we see anything like that, we'll go to the basement.

So it's waiting until you see a funnel. I'm sorry. At that point right there, I don't want my ass seeing a funnel. I don't want to do that. I remember when I was a kid, we had one go through our neighborhood, and you could see the funnel coming our way, but it was no warning beforehand. It was one of those ones where you didn't know. Veronica, how did Toledo get affected by this? I didn't see the weather forecast for Toledo last night.

Well, it wasn't last night. This was a couple years ago. I live in Point Place when we had that really bad tornado that came from Point Place in Toledo a couple years ago. Yeah. Okay. I had just bought a brand new Grand Cherokee L Overland, and it was trees falling, it was hailing, and I asked my grandkids to go lay on top of my car so I wouldn't get dinner by the bell. What? You sacrificed the babies? Oh, my. Sacrificed the babies for that Grand Cherokee L.

She asked them to lay on top of the cars. Okay. F them babies for real. That's absolutely funny, Veronica. God, what a grandma you are.

Are they like grandma? No.

Well, it came on the TV for us to take cover, and we went to bed.

Isn't that funny? That was your alarm to go to bed? Oh, God, guys, it's late. We got to go to bed. That was actually late, too, that you went to bed. You went to bed, what, in, like, midnight or something like that?

Well, no, I was already asleep, and then the thunder and stuff woke me up, and the next thing you know, the TV is going to go off, so you take cover, and we have nowhere to go.

Yeah, whenever that thing goes off, and it's the actual EAS test that goes off, oh, my God, that scares the crap out of me.

The phone one is really loud. It's jarring.

And they seem like they're doing those alerts like crazy these days.

My name is Neterica, Terry LaMille, and my major is general education. Some of the obstacles I have overcame at Bishop State is proving that I can show up consistently, even when my life was heavy. There are moments where I still feel overwhelmed by balancing work, leadership, parenting, and school, but Bishop reminded me that I'm capable of growth and not perfection, that I'm supported as long as I'm committed to being a better person than I was yesterday. My peers can depend on me. I'm there being poured into, but some of those students don't know that the faculty and staff are really there for them. So when they don't know that, I'm their resource that explain and show them that they're here to help us.
