My name is Patrick Pettway, and I am getting my Associates of Science and General Education with an emphasis in business administration. To me, it was a no-brainer. When you go out here and you're looking for funding to go back to college as a 40-year-old man, I got six people in my household. The extra money just doesn't just grow out of trees. For me to be able to be accepted through FAFSA and to have Bishop State pay for all of my tuition, not only that, but the curriculums, you know, they make it so easy to understand on their website. Like I said, I'm a 40-year-old man, so I don't use technology too much, But it was very understandable where I needed to go. It was extremely fast. These past two years, things have just moved in a total different type of way. It's like its own moving entity to see things manifest the way that they do.

favorite stores and i went into the mall the other day went into this particular store you know those stores that you go into half the time you can't find anybody to help you but this was like the opposite where i think every salesperson in that store like just swarmed me and i wasn't even really looking for anything in particular and it was like anytime i locked eyes with somebody they came up to me and they were like oh what are you shopping for are you going on a trip what size are you let me show you what you got in and it was to the point where i was like i finally just left because i was so irritated that i couldn't even just shop in peace without somebody asking me let me show you what we just got in today what you know what what kind

of a store is it it's a female a women's clothing store and the people are do you think that they're just being ultra friendly or do you think that they're pushing trying to sell you something

really no i think they want commission and to be honest with you i don't even know if you get commission at this store but it sure felt that way because

it was non-stop yeah do you uh like when people walk up to you and at anything could be anywhere

car dealerships you know kind of reminds me of are this all way all the time but now i feel like mall stores turn into car dealerships and they walk up to you and say um can i help you with anything like do you like that i like that because if i need help with something i will

one million percent find you because i know that you will get the the commission or the whatever the bonus for selling me something and in this case there was one girl who was actually helping me i had asked for a different size and something and she was like oh i'll start to a fitting room and then it but it i at least 10 other people came up and asked to which is really helpful but there does come a point where you start to feel attacked yeah did you work in reach anybody working retail i did but i stayed behind a the checkout you're the person checking because i

You know what this reminded me of? And I can say this now because they're no longer in business. And I loved their stuff. But when you walked into an art van, you kind of felt this way.

from you know what the visual is for me the visual of the art fan was the person that came with a you know those books that they have like legal pads inside of them but it's like a leather bound book yeah and it's like they would have their leather bound book in their hand that wasn't necessarily a clipboard it was like a fancy clipboard and they would hey how you doing what's going on and then they had their business cards and they would always give you their business cards like i would walk through an art van which the furniture store you know was obviously you know trying to sell you as much furniture as they can i can do it i would walk out with 12 business cards i'd be like i got like 12 people that walked up to me during the whole thing but

that turns me off it turns me off and they always used to be sitting on the couches right when you

first walk into the store like you can't even walk past the ottoman do you like it when you check out at the store and they'll ask you who you worked with like they'll say well who helped you today because they'll do it and i'll be like the girl with the black hair like i don't i don't

know i always like to give credit where credit is due yeah i just don't want to have to remember

shopping at this particular store in the mall is like going to a the bar market in birmingham a singles bar everybody's walking up all the time talking to you yeah i used to work at menards and

it was actually a requirement for us to walk up to every customer make contact ask them how they're doing what what project we can help them with and uh i mean you'd be surprised a lot of people get real annoyed with that you know hey i know what i'm doing let me let me shop kind of thing so uh

can i tell you something though menards has so much crap in it like they literally you're the It's the only place I know that you can go to and buy home improvement stuff to buying candy.

And somebody's playing the piano very beautifully.

It's craziness. In the middle of the store.

Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, unfortunately, the location I worked at, I didn't have the piano. But yeah, no, it's one of those things, you know, where people come in and yeah, I mean, you go into Menards and you think you know right where to go look for something. And lo and behold, it's on the other side of the store.

My favorite thing at a store, though, is when somebody walks up to you and they do this at Menards. more so than they do it at Lowe's or Home Depot, and you say, hey, I'm looking for Christmas decorations, and they don't say aisle seven or point to it. They walk you to it. Yo. I love when they do that.

Is that a Target thing?

Why, do they do that at Target for you? Every time that I've been at Target and I ask for something, I've had a couple people look annoyed because they had to walk all the way across the other side of the store,

but they take you to it. Oh, really? I see. I experienced that at certain stores, but Menards is one of them. At Home Depot, honestly, it's like you get lost in that store.

Yeah, no. Actually, at Menards, we're supposed to. They teach you when we're going through training and orientation. It's a requirement. If somebody asks for something, you walk them to where they need to go.

I was going to say when I was in the Bahamas, there's a souvenir shop and like everybody would come up to you and like ask you if you wanted to buy their stuff. And it was so annoying.

Oh, so that that's interesting what you're saying. You're saying that when you're stopping into those stores, it's like going to one of those island type vacation places where they're all trying to haggle you for things. That's what it feels like going through some of these mall stores. It's true.

And I know you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't, because then you go to certain stores and you can't find a a damn person yeah to help you at all so but it's just somewhere

and then they tell you how much you could save on your purchase with that credit card like they get

super specific and and the purchase is only ten dollars you're like why would i do it for ten dollars you know it's funny that is the big thing and then i hate when they ask you to make a donation to whatever their thing is that they're doing a charity donation for uh zach what's up It's Mojo in the morning.

Bishop State's like a home for people. It may not be like a four-year where you have a dorm, you have a roommate, you have a rec center, but it's still a place you can go meet new people, classmates, people in the hallway, make friends with advisors on all these teachers and everything like that. It's just a place you can feel like yourself and not try to be there you don't want to be with this program i learned networking a lot we've had two dinners with heads of different companies dealing with shipping or even game design builds dealing with autocad or need 3d modeling so really being able to meet new people or meet heads of new people have been really helpful i don't come from a wealthy family so four years we're kind of not out the picture but less probable for me to go to bishop state with my scholarship it cut my price in half and made it way easier for me to go to school for the same 12 credits i would go for a four year ready to
