The World Cup is underway, and it's been incredible. On our podcast, The Away End, with Daniel Alarcon and John Green, we're talking about the games that have delighted us, the teams that have inspired us, what we're loving and what surprised us, all through the lens of being massive fans of the world's most beautiful game.

00:01:48 - 00:02:02 | Speaker 7:

Daniel, this tournament has been magical so far. There's so much to love, and I can hardly believe the drama that the group stage brought us. And now it's time for us to talk about the teams that are left as the field is whittled down to one World Cup champion on July 19th.

All right, it is mojo in the morning. the holidays getting together with family sometimes not as easy as it looks when you watch one of those holiday movies although what shannon is about to encounter with her christmas seems like it could be one of those movies where in the beginning it seems like it's going to be all aft up maybe it will be one of those happy endings at the end i'd say just maybe what's

00:02:39 - 00:04:53 | Speaker 1:

going on shannon how are you i'm okay should we or shouldn't we is the question um since i started dating my husband he who is canadian we always go to canada to celebrate boxing day which is right after christmas so we leave uh the day after they don't celebrate christmas in canada no they do but we're celebrating christmas here with our you know our our kids and our what's boxing yeah is that like actual day it's hard no it's kind of like black friday i guess i could equate like but it's like a bit it's like a thing um all of our canadian listeners are are aware of this but um we get to see his two sisters and his brother and spend time with the cousins and some of his friends that he grew up with however and you guys know this something has always gone wrong since i started going from me projectile vomiting all over his sister's house because i had some like norovirus thing um to a murder at the hotel that we were staying at one year to last year when all of the kids Christmas gifts got stolen out of our car I mean it has just it has not been the most pleasant of experiences every year we take this trip to Canada um and this year there is some family drama with certain siblings not talking to other siblings which is forcing Wes to be he's in a really tough spot because well myself as well but we're trying to figure out a schedule of like driving to and from the various suburbs of Toronto which are like hours apart because one sibling doesn't want to be around another sibling and it's like man oh man it's a puzzle of trying to figure this out and Wes said yeah but Wes was like maybe we should just skip this year and just spend quality time with each other at home. You know, we both have a break from work. We never get a chance to just have nothing on our calendar. And he's like, I don't want to be miserable. I don't want to be in the middle of everybody else's drama. Is he close with his siblings? He is very close with his siblings.

00:04:53 - 00:04:55 | Speaker 3:

He gets along with both of them, but they don't get along with each other.

00:04:55 - 00:05:00 | Speaker 1:

So there's four siblings. So he gets along with all three. but they're

00:05:00 - 00:05:15 | Speaker 2:

There's two that are not getting along. And he was like, this is theirs to fix. But now we're all being drawn into it, and it's going to make for a crazy couple of days for us trying to manage making sure that they are apart.

00:05:15 - 00:05:16 | Speaker 3:

Yeah.

00:05:16 - 00:05:20 | Speaker 2:

And I said to him, if your mom was alive.

00:05:20 - 00:05:21 | Speaker 3:

Oh, you did not.

00:05:21 - 00:05:38 | Speaker 2:

She would. But it's true. She would hate the idea that you guys aren't all going to spend Christmas together. And I also said, I feel like you have to be really careful because once you skip and everybody is not together, then I feel like it never goes back.

00:05:39 - 00:05:39 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, I feel you.

00:05:39 - 00:05:48 | Speaker 2:

The glue is gone and it never goes back. And he's like, but we wouldn't all be together anyway. We're all going to have separate celebrations because of what's going on.

00:05:48 - 00:05:55 | Speaker 3:

No, there's a deal. In those Hallmark movies, you're separate to start and then something happens. And then they were brought together.

00:05:55 - 00:06:01 | Speaker 2:

Well, I would hope so. I hope that happens before we go, but I don't think it's going to, unfortunately.

00:06:01 - 00:06:14 | Speaker 3:

What if you are the peacemaker in the family? What if you, as the new sister-in-law, you can do this. You can bring them together and try to make bygones be bygones or something like that. I've heard that before.

00:06:16 - 00:06:20 | Speaker 2:

I wish I could do that. I don't think I can. Could you imagine? I don't think I can.

00:06:20 - 00:06:23 | Speaker 3:

He would fall so much more in love with you if you could do that.

00:06:23 - 00:06:33 | Speaker 2:

But I even said that to Wes, and he has tried already. And he is also like, it's not, like, why, that is a lot of pressure to put on me. He's already been trying.

00:06:33 - 00:06:41 | Speaker 4:

And to your point about how his mother would feel, wouldn't his mother not want him to be disgusted and miserable on Christmas? He brought that up, too.

00:06:41 - 00:06:48 | Speaker 2:

He's like, you could say that mom would want us all to be together, but you could also say that mom wouldn't want it to be like this.

00:06:49 - 00:06:50 | Speaker 3:

This is the part of the movie.

00:06:50 - 00:06:52 | Speaker 2:

So do we go or do we not go? I don't know.

00:06:52 - 00:07:09 | Speaker 3:

This is the part of the Wes family movie where he looks out the window, and it starts snowing, and he's thinking of his mom, and this song is playing, and he goes, oh, my God, Shannon, my brother that hates my sister are pulling up in the driveway right now, and we're all going to be together.

00:07:10 - 00:07:11 | Speaker 2:

We thought about tricking them.

00:07:12 - 00:07:13 | Speaker 3:

Celebrate Canadian Boxing Day.

00:07:13 - 00:07:19 | Speaker 2:

And to get everybody in the same place at the same time, but that could blow up in our faces. Don't go, Shannon. We just want everybody to be together.

00:07:20 - 00:07:34 | Speaker 3:

How do we get everybody together, guys? Canada, if you're listening. Are you listening in Canada? Yeah, hey there. Canada. Are you there? Can you hear us? Why do you guys all got to hate each other? I think it's Justin Trudeau. That guy needs to resign.

00:07:34 - 00:07:35 | Speaker 4:

Isn't he supposed to?

00:07:35 - 00:07:37 | Speaker 3:

I heard he's going to, yeah.

00:07:37 - 00:07:42 | Speaker 4:

Oh, yeah? Yes. But the issue is not getting everybody together, right? It's getting everybody to get along.

00:07:43 - 00:07:43 | Speaker 3:

Yeah.

00:07:43 - 00:07:50 | Speaker 2:

Well, they're not all getting together. So we have one day of just a sister, and then we have another day of a sister and a brother.

00:07:51 - 00:07:52 | Speaker 4:

Because they don't get along.

00:07:52 - 00:07:52 | Speaker 2:

Right.

00:07:53 - 00:07:55 | Speaker 3:

Who does Wes side with on this?

00:07:55 - 00:07:57 | Speaker 2:

I can't say that.

00:07:57 - 00:08:00 | Speaker 3:

No? Because somebody's got to be in the wrong. Just in case.

00:08:00 - 00:08:03 | Speaker 4:

Don't go. I wouldn't go. I think Wes is going to have.

00:08:03 - 00:08:32 | Speaker 2:

But he's stuck. He's truly stuck in between a rock and a hard place. And he was like, when he said, oh, you and I should just go away. We haven't gotten to do that. It's been a crazy couple of months. We've been focused on everything else but each other. And we could use that time. but he's like how oh we always find time for that I'm talking about quality time but but he's like how bad would it look if on social media you and I are somewhere wonderful right you know and then we're not there for the holiday

00:08:32 - 00:08:44 | Speaker 3:

I will say this life is too short it really is and I think that these people need to figure it out they're probably fighting over something so incredibly stupid do we know what it is I do know what it is

00:08:44 - 00:08:59 | Speaker 2:

very deeply personal huh it's legitimate though do you understand it It is legitimate, but no, no, it's fine. I feel like one person is very clearly in the wrong.

00:08:59 - 00:09:01 | Speaker 3:

Monica, what are your thoughts? What do you think?

00:09:02 - 00:09:10 | Speaker 1:

Do not trick anyone into showing up because that could just make it worse. I've been there. I tried that. It did not work.

00:09:11 - 00:09:12 | Speaker 4:

What was your situation?

00:09:14 - 00:09:33 | Speaker 1:

It's a long story, but siblings were not getting along. and I tried to make it to try to get them to talk and I did the surprise meeting type deal it just blew up, it wasn't bad but it wasn't good and it can make it worse so I would not see the surprise at all

00:09:33 - 00:09:38 | Speaker 4:

did it immediately blow up or did they try to play nice and then eventually it blew up

00:09:38 - 00:09:58 | Speaker 1:

there was a semi nice part of it and there's the different parties, there was a walkout which was okay, it wasn't like a big blow up but it just was not a good idea and in retrospect I felt like a heel and if I would put myself in their position I would not want them to have done that on me question are you whispering because

00:09:58 - 00:09:59 | Speaker 3:

some of them are in the other room right

00:10:00 - 00:10:05 | Speaker 1:

now or what i'm at work i'm at work okay i was like i was like kind of getting turned on by that

00:10:05 - 00:10:11 | Speaker 2:

but all right what's up amber hi hey how are you guys this morning good we're trying to keep the

00:10:11 - 00:10:18 | Speaker 1:

peace in canada we're coming up with a canadian christmas hallmark channel i think that if shannon

00:10:18 - 00:10:27 | Speaker 2:

and wes are in a good place and you know they're they're happy with each other i think they need to protect their peace and if everybody's not going to be able to do that then i would stay home

00:10:28 - 00:10:30 | Speaker 1:

That's an interesting one.

00:10:30 - 00:10:31 | Speaker 2:

I agree.

00:10:32 - 00:10:45 | Speaker 1:

I mean, who goes to Canada for Christmas? You know what I mean? Like, go south. Go down to Bahamas or something like that. Actually, you know what you do? Not everybody is in Canada. Everybody. Janie. Or Janie.

00:10:45 - 00:10:46 | Speaker 3:

Yes. Janie.

00:10:47 - 00:10:47 | Speaker 1:

Yes.

00:10:47 - 00:10:49 | Speaker 3:

Good morning, you guys. I love you guys.

00:10:49 - 00:10:50 | Speaker 1:

Good morning.

00:10:51 - 00:10:58 | Speaker 3:

We love you, too. We love you, too. Thank you. Thank you. Is that it?

00:11:00 - 00:11:06 | Speaker 1:

Can't you call Wes's family? I love that. Just scream, I love you guys. What did you have to say, Janie?

00:11:07 - 00:11:22 | Speaker 3:

Well, I was just listening to you guys talking about, you know, the disagreement with the family. I had a disagreement with my daughter a couple months ago, and we're not spending the holiday together. No. It's completely breaking my heart. Oh, Janie. Why? Why?

00:11:23 - 00:11:24 | Speaker 1:

Who's the stubborn one?

00:11:26 - 00:11:35 | Speaker 3:

Well, it's kind of me. It's my son-in-law, and we got in an argument, and he told me he never wanted me at his house again.

00:11:36 - 00:11:37 | Speaker 1:

What did you do?

00:11:38 - 00:11:49 | Speaker 3:

I didn't do anything against my opinion, you know what I'm saying? They didn't like it, and so it's very hard during the holidays. I'm trying to fix it, but it can't be fair.

00:11:49 - 00:11:51 | Speaker 1:

Do you need Mojo in the morning's help?

00:11:52 - 00:11:54 | Speaker 3:

Maybe, yes.

00:11:54 - 00:11:55 | Speaker 1:

What's your daughter's name?

00:11:56 - 00:11:56 | Speaker 3:

Ashley.

00:11:57 - 00:12:00 | Speaker 1:

Ashley, it's Mojo. Shannon, Megan, Kev.

00:12:00 - 00:12:01 | Speaker 3:

Don't include me on this.

00:12:02 - 00:12:10 | Speaker 1:

We have your mom here. This woman gave you the gift of life. She loves you more than anything in this world, don't you, Janie?

00:12:11 - 00:12:12 | Speaker 3:

Yes, I do.

00:12:13 - 00:12:22 | Speaker 1:

And even though she says some things some time to time that she probably shouldn't say, you only got this Christmas once. This might be...

00:12:22 - 00:12:24 | Speaker 3:

You're not even guaranteed about this Christmas.

00:12:24 - 00:12:41 | Speaker 1:

This could be your last Christmas with your mom. You don't want that to happen. You want your mom there with you. And all we're asking is, you know what? She'll apologize, even if she doesn't mean it. But she'll apologize.

00:12:41 - 00:12:42 | Speaker 3:

Yes, I will.

00:12:42 - 00:12:51 | Speaker 1:

And she will love you forever because she respects you and knows you're a smart, beautiful woman. But just spend Christmas with your mom.

00:12:53 - 00:12:53 | Speaker 3:

Yes.

00:12:53 - 00:12:58 | Speaker 1:

you think she'll listen to this can you play this podcast for her

00:12:58 - 00:13:08 | Speaker 3:

oh well she listens to you guys all the time and I will play this for her and I will send it to my other daughter because I got her coming home from California what did you call

00:13:08 - 00:13:10 | Speaker 1:

what did you call your son-in-law

00:13:10 - 00:13:12 | Speaker 3:

his name is Jeremy

00:13:12 - 00:13:14 | Speaker 1:

I know what did you call him though that upset him

00:13:16 - 00:13:29 | Speaker 3:

we got a disagreement about something else in the family and I just spoke my opinion to my daughter and then he stepped in and try to overpower everything when he should never stepped in between me and my daughter.

00:13:30 - 00:13:40 | Speaker 1:

Be careful. That's where you should say where he stepped in because he was trying to be protective and he probably, you know, was doing it for good reasons. But I apologize and let's all be nice with each other.

00:13:41 - 00:13:53 | Speaker 3:

Yes, I'm going to try to do that. And I am going to be the biggest person and apologize for the holiday because that means I don't get to spend the time with my grandkids. I don't, you know. You got to fix this. here's the deal

00:13:53 - 00:14:05 | Speaker 1:

we're going to make sure that she hears this and if she does not accept this would you guys want to go to Canada with Wes and Shannon

00:14:05 - 00:14:24 | Speaker 3:

I got a passport no we want this to happen we want to fix this at home I would love to have you if we go I'm going to try my best I have my other daughters coming home on Friday and maybe, you know, we all can get together and try to talk it.

00:14:24 - 00:14:32 | Speaker 1:

Shannon, who is this? That's Janie. Who is this crazy lady? Mojo invited her to Spankersmith. He's down for anything. He's fine.

00:14:33 - 00:14:38 | Speaker 3:

I love you guys. I listen to you every morning. We love you, too. I really, really do hope that this happens for you.

00:14:38 - 00:14:41 | Speaker 1:

What's your daughter's first name and what's her town that she lives in?

00:14:42 - 00:14:46 | Speaker 3:

She lives in Monroe, Michigan. Her name is Ashley. Come on, Ashley.

00:14:46 - 00:14:48 | Speaker 1:

Ashley from Monroe, Michigan. Your mother, Janie.

00:14:49 - 00:14:50 | Speaker 3:

She loves you.

00:14:50 - 00:15:00 | Speaker 1:

She may be a little crazy, I get it But you know what, she's your crazy And she's only You only have this mom once Okay, and it sounds to me

00:15:00 - 00:15:36 | Speaker 6:

like everything was good until this one moment and both you and your husband need to understand that Christmas is the time of year where we all come together. Do you remember the little baby Jesus was born in Bethlehem? He was born in a barn. His first Christmas was in an effing barn. I mean, he didn't have it in Monroe, Michigan in a nice cozy home. He had it in a barn with sheep and wise men. How wise were these men that they only got them a barn? They couldn't even get them into a hotel like a...

00:15:36 - 00:15:38 | Speaker 5:

There was no room at the inn.

00:15:38 - 00:15:45 | Speaker 6:

There was no room at the Hampton Inn. They've got free breakfast for you when you stay there. Yes.

00:15:47 - 00:15:52 | Speaker 3:

Thanks, guys. I will call you guys after the new year and tell you what happened.

00:15:52 - 00:16:20 | Speaker 6:

Away in a manger, no crib for his head. The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. You got it wrong, but it's okay. There, Janie from Monroe, she upset her son-in-law. And Mojo in the morning did something, something, something.

00:16:24 - 00:16:26 | Speaker 3:

Thanks, guys. I really appreciate this.

00:16:26 - 00:17:02 | Speaker 6:

Oh, little town of Bethlehem. We are close to the end. Evening to see delight. I'm still in the same position that I was in when we started this break. I have been enlightened with some beautiful music. Sing to Shannon. What's the Shannon doing song? On the first day of Canadian Christmas, Wes's sister gave to Shannon. Oh, my goodness. Am I supposed to finish that? No, it's you. Okay.

00:17:02 - 00:17:04 | Speaker 4:

What do you give her? Bye, Janie.

00:17:05 - 00:17:06 | Speaker 3:

Bye, you guys. I love you.

00:17:07 - 00:17:34 | Speaker 4:
