Shannon, this next topic is kind of an emotional topic. I am not

00:02:36 - 00:02:42 | Speaker 3:

going to cry. Don't cry. So I just want to put this out there now so you're not disappointed. That's all right. So, Shannon,

00:02:42 - 00:02:44 | Speaker 4:

what was it like to go and pick

00:02:44 - 00:02:51 | Speaker 3:

out a christmas tree what was it like to go out no it was i was a tough moment but i mean i'm not

00:02:51 - 00:02:57 | Speaker 4:

gonna explain so this this weekend this weekend was holiday picking out trees and all that stuff

00:02:57 - 00:04:07 | Speaker 3:

like every divorced parent goes through this during the holiday and um we started a new tradition in our house last year with our family of six so myself my husband wes and then our four combined kids. And that new tradition was going to Blake's, which is like a farm and orchard here in the Metro Detroit area. And we cut down our Christmas tree. I say we, it's totally Wes. It's the boys. It's Wes and Kieran and Smith. But it was such a fun tradition to start last year. And we had said, okay, this is something that we're going to do like as a new family, you know, moving forward and this year it just did not work out with timing and I have my kids week on week off his schedule with his kids is very different and then you throw in the holidays and everybody's got different things that they need to go to not to mention Wes's sister and brother-in-law were in town this weekend from Canada so Saturday was the day that we had chosen to do it and And I didn't have Lucent Smith with me. And it was really super tough.

00:04:08 - 00:04:12 | Speaker 5:

I saw the pictures. You had Wes's daughter there, I saw, right? And son, Kieran.

00:04:12 - 00:04:29 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, my stepkids were with us. And then Wes's sister and brother-in-law were with us. And it's just one of those things where you look at the calendar and go, okay, how can we make it so that everybody can be there? Well, they close at five during the week. And I don't get the kids home from school until about 4.15, so that's not going to work.

00:04:30 - 00:04:30 | Speaker 5:

It had to be on the weekend.

00:04:30 - 00:04:52 | Speaker 3:

It had to be on a weekend. and this was their dad's weekend to have them and they had activities all weekend. Next weekend, all of us are out of town. And then the following weekend, we all had stuff and I don't have the kids again. So it's just like there was never a day when we had all four kids to do it. And so, yeah, we just went and did it.

00:04:52 - 00:05:15 | Speaker 5:

Do they get upset that they weren't there? When they come back to your house from being at their dad's house, do they see the Christmas tree? and go wait what happened like honestly no it's more me because we're okay we were waiting to decorate it all together um and we we actually ended up getting two because wes is crazy like that but um really yes two west got two for separate rooms or for where are you putting

00:05:15 - 00:05:25 | Speaker 4:

them what's crazy like that or did you have a specific look for a tree and he wanted nope this was all west he found a second tree that was just too good to pass up no so he cut down

00:05:25 - 00:05:30 | Speaker 2:

until so where are you where are you guys gonna put a second tree that's a great question

00:05:30 - 00:06:10 | Speaker 5:

is it like a back is it like a backup tree the other one's like but so i got the kids back last night and i said we're waiting you know we're waiting for you we're all gonna wait to decorate together but now like we don't have his kids for the next couple days and then everybody's it's just a mess but it's hard it's hard to do the juggle of you want to do you want to do it when you have everybody together and sometimes it's not going to work out that way and then like the whole time I'm like this is really fun and I love having everybody here that is here and I'm trying to enjoy everybody that's a part of it but I'm also like it stinks you know like uh Lucy FaceTimed me as we were doing it I'm like this is our this is the tree you know is it tough

00:06:10 - 00:06:19 | Speaker 2:

on holidays because I know don't you have it set up where it's like you get certain holidays and then the next year that it changes or is that so don't ask me about this year because I will cry

00:06:19 - 00:06:23 | Speaker 5:

this year's a tough one because I won't see my kids at all on Christmas day oh my gosh do you

00:06:23 - 00:06:24 | Speaker 2:

You get them Christmas Eve?

00:06:24 - 00:06:39 | Speaker 5:

So we are going to do our Christmas day, and I'm using air quotes, on Christmas Eve. So they'll wake up at my house on Christmas Eve morning, and it'll be Christmas morning. That's how it is this year for Josiah. But it's going to be a rough Christmas day for me.

00:06:39 - 00:07:16 | Speaker 2:

I never experienced divorce, but my mom passed. And I remember the first Christmas of her not being there was kind of a really tough situation. But I've never I've never was in a situation where I had to, like, split time with my kids or split time with my dad and stuff like that. Do the kids take it hard? Like, is it like do the kids sit there and go, you know, I want to be here on Christmas or I want to be there on Christmas? Or do they look at it like they get the best of both worlds or I feel like my kids are pretty resilient so far because they were so young when we got divorced.

00:07:16 - 00:07:39 | Speaker 5:

So this is kind of all they know. yeah um but i'm sure i'm sure it it i'm 41 years old and it is still hard for me i bet with your to divide up the holiday like i still feel like someone is always getting slighted on a holiday yeah but as a kid the one benefit is multiple holidays i don't know look if i loved it

00:07:39 - 00:08:36 | Speaker 3:

if i can interject for a second it is difficult obviously on appearance but i've seen the look in josiah's eyes where for example this year will be the same as for you i'll have josiah for christmas eve yeah and then he gets his mom for christmas day until new year's day and then i get him new year's eve and then you know it's exactly the same for us i've seen the look in josiah's eyes where we try to make christmas as christmasy as we can even though it's not the day you try to like force we're gonna have our christmas eve and then they're in the emotion of it they're in the matching pajamas they're opening up presents and then they're settled but at 6 p.m you have to go to your mom and it's like you remove the child from this Christmas environment that you've cultivated and then all of a sudden they got to put their coats on put their boots on and then go somewhere else and have to do it all again and there is this moment of like yes two Christmases sounds great and two households with two presents sounds great but like removing the child at that

00:08:36 - 00:09:25 | Speaker 1:

Mom, it really hurts. So I experienced it. I was a child of divorce. And I will say, yes, there are hard times, but I got the joy of my holidays didn't really stop. So like, yeah, I'm sure for the parents, I'm coming at it from a kid's perspective. Scheduling around that, somebody having Thanksgiving during the day, somebody having Thanksgiving at night, somebody doing Christmas Eve parties at this house so that we can do presents. It must have been an absolute nightmare to organize. but as a kid my holidays did not stop because there was always a family member to go to or a new celebration or a dinner or a lunch or this or that where other kids would have like christmas and then they just like hung out for the rest of the day watching movies i was like christmas to christmas to christmas it didn't stop it was it was fun see i would i we don't we don't even our

00:09:25 - 00:09:35 | Speaker 2:

kids won't even like let us go out of town to go visit chelsea's family at christmas because they don't want to not be in their house so i so i look at that and they're you know kind of grown

00:09:35 - 00:09:51 | Speaker 3:

kids but but like say you got a fire toy at mom's crib like then you got to take it with you to dad's crib or say you some parents are like don't take my stuff out the house wow and then you got to leave it there and then you want to play with the thing and you got to wait a week to come back and

00:09:51 - 00:10:00 | Speaker 1:

play with it see i wasn't super little when they got divorced i was not that age so i was closer to like 10-ish and then...

00:10:00 - 00:10:08 | Speaker 5:

older and for me yeah you do leave stuff behind you know that but you got good stuff in both houses then you got everything on your list mika what's up it's mojo in the morning

00:10:08 - 00:10:40 | Speaker 9:

i just wanted to say that as a child that grew up from a divorced family i absolutely hated it because not only did i get up and have christmas at home and then have to go to my grandma my maternal grandma's then i had to get picked up from my maternal grandmothers by my father and then go to his parents and you never got to enjoy your presence in the people you were with because you were just you you know just constant movement and you're trying to be you're i bet you you're

00:10:40 - 00:10:44 | Speaker 7:

trying to like put on the best face because you don't want your parent to be upset too right

00:10:44 - 00:11:23 | Speaker 9:

right true and you know or you know you got to see a cousin over here that you haven't seen for six months and now you have to leave after 15 minutes you think it's not you know what i mean But you don't want anybody to know that that hurt you because you don't want to hurt anybody else. So, like, I'm lucky because when I turned 18, I, you know, kind of I was out on my own and I started bringing my siblings to my house because my mom got another divorce. And so I was like, that's it. Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, ever since I was 18, it's been at my house for all my siblings and for my children. And I love it. I don't go anywhere. And everybody comes there and just enjoys it.

00:11:23 - 00:11:28 | Speaker 7:

i just don't like the cleanup yeah yeah thanks mika what's up taylor hi

00:11:28 - 00:12:14 | Speaker 8:

hi first time caller long time listener happy holiday um my parents split up at a very very young age um so i've always had a super super busy christmas um christmas eve was always with my mom and then so that's when like santa came you know christmas day was with my father and his parents um on that side but i did go back to my mom's that night um i definitely say it was really busy but i've never had a problem with it you know my parents did get along so that was on a plus yeah but you know seeing everybody and of course as a kid having two christmases is always wonderful but um i definitely see the effect it could have on a parent but as a kid i i never affected you know that it's still like that

00:12:14 - 00:12:21 | Speaker 7:

to this day i still have it split up so here's the biggest uh part of this whole thing will you go decorate shannon's tree

00:12:21 - 00:12:27 | Speaker 8:

we don't even put a tree up in my house because the house is too small

00:12:27 - 00:12:45 | Speaker 7:

maybe that's the biggest thing we went into this whole thing shannon went and had to pick out she's got two trees now two trees and not one decoration on it so that's alright you know what let the man have his trees for god's sake no wesley we have a limited amount of space

00:12:45 - 00:12:48 | Speaker 5:

there's a lot of dogs there's a lot of kids there's a lot going on

00:12:48 - 00:12:50 | Speaker 2:

Put it in the gym. It's the gym tree.

00:12:50 - 00:12:51 | Speaker 8:

It's the first time.

00:12:52 - 00:13:18 | Speaker 2:
