I'm Mange Shatikular and I'm back with a new season of my podcast Skyline Drive This time I talk to scientists, biopunks, curmudgeons, blues owners, super seniors and Goa's top cryotherapy lab to try to understand this obsession with living forever and what it means for all of us And I get into a bit of trouble along the way

00:01:45 - 00:01:50 | Speaker 1:

I'd say probably start bone smashing That doesn't work Make it look more defined They say it works, I don't know

00:01:50 - 00:01:54 | Speaker 4:

Listen to Skyline Drive, How to Live Forever on the iHeartRadio app

00:01:54 - 00:02:25 | Speaker 6:

apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts uh mojo on the morning show i noticed that shannon and her boyfriend wes had a little getaway this weekend with the kids all the kids so first her kid for those who don't know shannon's dating this guy she's been dating him for what over a year right and he uh and you each have two kids a boy and a girl boy and a girl their age difference though right your kids are younger his kids are a little bit yeah what's the age difference so he

00:02:25 - 00:03:10 | Speaker 7:

has a son who is 15 uh a daughter who is 13 and then my lucy is eight and smith my little guy uh was five and a half yesterday we have to celebrate his half birthday it's a very very very big thing how do the kids all get along um they get along wonderfully they really do um but it is i'm not gonna i'm not gonna sugarcoat that it's definitely a challenge to make sure with, with all of the different ages in our families, when you throw them all together, like we did this weekend, making sure that everybody is cool and has something to do and isn't bored because from a 15 year old down to a five year old, Smith isn't going to want to do the same things that his 15 year old is interested in, you know? And sometimes they

00:03:10 - 00:03:24 | Speaker 6:

want to do them, but they can't do them. Right. Cause there's right. Like he's a teenager. He needs time to himself he wants like yeah teenager doesn't want to be hanging out right with a five and a half year old yeah so it was he is a five and a half five and a half do not forget the half

00:03:24 - 00:04:13 | Speaker 7:

so yeah we we um loaded all of the kids into my car and we we drove up north for the weekend we got an airbnb and so i think wes and i were both really excited about it but also slightly nervous as well just because we didn't you know know what to expect or how it would go and we we want this We call it warming up of families to be really good and really successful. And, you know, the one thing like we anticipated that it wasn't going to be perfect. We knew that. But the one thing that I did not anticipate was Lucy, my eight year old, being a little jealous when I showed attention to Wes's daughter, who's 13. And it was just something that we like I and I know that moving forward, we will have to work through.

00:04:13 - 00:04:17 | Speaker 6:

Give us an example of that. So what were you doing?

00:04:17 - 00:04:54 | Speaker 7:

It really, I can't even think of anything specific, but like any time that I would compliment, her name is Samantha, she's so sweet. Any time that I would compliment Samantha or, you know, want to spend time with her or play a game with her, I didn't know it. But inside, Luce was feeling a certain way. And it wasn't until she kind of bubbled over one night and got super upset and was crying. and I pulled her aside and said, you're like, what is going on, girlfriend? You are not acting like yourself. And she said, I just feel like you love her more than you love me. And I thought, gosh, this is just one of those things that I'm sure parents-

00:04:54 - 00:04:59 | Speaker 6:

To tell her that Uncle Mojo still loves her more. I love her more. I don't know if she's going to answer that much.

00:05:00 - 00:05:09 | Speaker 3:

This is just one of those things that parents who are blending families, you know, I'm sure deals with. And it's a first for me. Should we open up lines? Oh, my God. Yeah, I would love that.

00:05:09 - 00:05:35 | Speaker 2:

So let's open up phone lines and tell us your story of how the jealousy came into play. And what did you guys do to stop the jealousy? Like, do you know, like, what does Shannon do in this case? So it's so funny because I've met Wes's kids once when we did the firefighter thing downtown. Yeah. We're on 313 day. And what I remember about the kids is they're just like so sweet. They were very quiet. They were very sweet. They are the best kids. Great looking kids.

00:05:35 - 00:05:37 | Speaker 3:

I always tell Wes, what did you sprinkle in their food to make them this way?

00:05:37 - 00:05:50 | Speaker 2:

Give me some. And I can kind of see where that would happen because Samantha doesn't seem or didn't seem that when I saw her there is like very, she's not like, she's not like somebody that wants a lot of attention, right? She didn't seem like that.

00:05:50 - 00:05:50 | Speaker 3:

Yeah.

00:05:50 - 00:05:57 | Speaker 2:

And I could see if you're a child that does do get a lot of attention, like Lucy does get a lot of attention and she's got a great personality.

00:05:57 - 00:06:11 | Speaker 3:

Where if somebody else comes into play, especially somebody that is the same sex, you know, you've never seen you've never seen your mom Give affection to any other kids besides you or your brother or like my two nieces

00:06:11 - 00:06:16 | Speaker 2:

She like this with your ex-husband in his new relationship and stuff. Is that causing any issues at all?

00:06:16 - 00:06:29 | Speaker 3:

Um, I don't know Andrew and I haven't really talked about that yet because Andrew's in a relationship and his girlfriend has a daughter who is is exactly Lucy's age, and they are like BFFs. They're very, very, very close. And then she has a son who's a little bit older as well.

00:06:29 - 00:06:33 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, because I would think that would have been a more jealous situation, right?

00:06:33 - 00:06:42 | Speaker 3:

Yeah, it's just very interesting because she, you know, I have to be super sensitive with her because she's feeling on both sides, right? She's got a situation on both sides that she's trying to adjust to.

00:06:42 - 00:06:44 | Speaker 2:

That's a great point. Yeah, what's up, Steven?

00:06:45 - 00:06:48 | Speaker 4:

Hey, what's up again? Good morning.

00:06:48 - 00:06:51 | Speaker 2:

Good morning. What's going on, buddy? Good to have you back on the show. What's going on?

00:06:52 - 00:07:13 | Speaker 4:

Nothing much. I got a blended family here. I got an older daughter that's like 10, and then I got two younger kids. And, like, the older daughter, she don't like to play with the 6-year-old as much as she do with the 5-year-old. And he's a boy and she's a girl. You would think the two girls would like to play together, but no, she'd like to play with the boy more than the girl.

00:07:14 - 00:07:17 | Speaker 2:

So give us a – what do you do, Dad? What do you got going on?

00:07:18 - 00:07:36 | Speaker 4:

So, like, if they wanted to go in the room and play a game, The little girl, the 6-year-old, she would get mad because she wouldn't get played with by the 10-year-old, but the 10-year-old would play with the 5-year-old. It's like, why would you not want to play with both your siblings?

00:07:37 - 00:08:09 | Speaker 2:

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I think that what happens with these kids is it's kind of like when somebody gets a new friend, too, but this is tenfold because it's a parent. You know what I mean? Like, do you remember when a new kid moved into the school and started, like, hanging in school and you'd be like, your friends would see, you'd see them like, like, I remember I had a new kid that moved into our school and the teacher said to one of my best buddies, Tom Barrett, hey, will you show him around? It crushed me. You know, this is tenfold. It'd be like them saying to my dad, dad, you know, take this kid or whatever.

00:08:09 - 00:08:10 | Speaker 3:

Yep, yep.

00:08:10 - 00:08:18 | Speaker 2:

I wanted to put that kid in the freaking, in the shoot, the garbage shoot that we had at school. You think Lucy wants to put Samantha in the garbage shoot?

00:08:18 - 00:08:35 | Speaker 3:

Because that's the thing, too, is they get along crazy. Do they? They play. And it was funny, too, because at several different points in the weekend, they wanted to go off and have girl time. And then you've got Smith. You know Smith. Maybe that's good. Who's like, no, and we did. But then Smith felt like he wasn't included because he wanted to play with them.

00:08:35 - 00:08:46 | Speaker 2:

Oh, it's such a delicate balance. You need to find somebody with no kids. Sorry, Wes. I'm sorry. We've got to find single. Reese, you're single. You and Shannon are going to. You guys are getting.

00:08:47 - 00:08:47 | Unknown:

What's up?

00:08:47 - 00:09:34 | Speaker 1:

yeah what's up christine no hi how are you good what's going on good it's kind of funny that you brought this up because i went through this on saturday with my five-year-old um so our really good friend needed to have her daughter stay the night with us and she's a lot older than my daughter and when we dropped her off i'm like you know i asked my daughter i'm like what does it matter you're really quiet and she's like you wanted to talk to her all by myself you guys left me out the whole time and i don't have she's my only child so i don't oh yeah yeah another kid so and i'm currently pregnant so now i'm all like oh my gosh what do i do that's the toughest

00:09:34 - 00:09:39 | Speaker 2:

only children and then somebody else comes into play that's not great right yeah and it was like

00:09:39 - 00:09:51 | Speaker 1:

her very first sleepover too. Yeah. But my friend's daughter, she, you know, she's a single mom and that's all she knows. She only knows like adults. So she's more comfortable, you know, with me

00:09:51 - 00:10:00 | Speaker 2:

versus, you know, hanging out with a five-year-old. Sure. Um, Erica, you are the child in this case. This might be good advice for you.

00:10:00 - 00:10:44 | Speaker 3:

you shannon on how to deal with this what happened uh well so my dad remarried when i was like 11 and my stepsister and i are only three months apart um and most of the time it it was great we were best friends but there were some times where there were attention but i would say i i think in this situation i think the age difference is playing a big part in this you know little girls especially all they want to do is be grown up basically and she probably sees shannon connecting with the older girl in a different way than she can with with lucy and so i think maybe just trying to find a way like bring her into the fold and make it seems like the older girls crew would probably be helpful yeah yeah that's all i remember being a kid all i wanted to do was

00:10:44 - 00:10:54 | Speaker 8:

be a big girl basically you know so how are wes's kids dealing with younger because you when you're like in their age like in high school area like them so it's you don't want a younger person

00:10:54 - 00:11:19 | Speaker 2:

around but how are they right honestly and and i you know i'm not just saying this his kids are the best kids but like we had to give his son some time alone because i'm like you know you've got my five-year-old like running around like a crazy person and he just like wanted to watch football and like you know text his friends and so at one point we all left the house and we were like you just sit by yourself and take some time and watch football like you get your time too

00:11:19 - 00:11:23 | Speaker 8:

do uh is this the longest that they've all stayed consecutively with each other because Did you get her away this weekend?

00:11:23 - 00:11:42 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, and you know what's so funny is Wes and I were driving home yesterday and the kids were all in the back sleeping and I looked at him and he looked at me. I'm like, you know, we worked so hard to make the weekend so great for our kids. We did not spend one minute together. Like, we did not get any time by ourselves and I looked at him and I was like, I'm really tired. I'm just so exhausted. Well, it's almost like you have to have

00:11:42 - 00:11:46 | Speaker 7:

two separate trips. You do one for you guys as a couple and then one for the family.

00:11:46 - 00:11:50 | Speaker 2:

Yeah, because I was so worried about it going well, you know. I think that the stress just exhausted me.

00:11:50 - 00:11:57 | Speaker 8:

And now, was this a planned trip for a reason? Or what was the, like, is there something big coming up?

00:11:57 - 00:12:16 | Speaker 2:

No, we just haven't done it yet. And so we both had a free weekend this weekend and thought, you know, this is a good time to do something Christmassy. And if you were, I saw so many listeners this weekend, by the way, in Petoskey and Harbor Springs. That's up where we were. They were doing, like, their Christmas celebrations. And so we just thought it would be fun, a fun Christmassy thing to do with the family.

00:12:16 - 00:12:18 | Speaker 8:

You know who you guys are like, by the way? What? Who?

00:12:18 - 00:12:22 | Speaker 7:

Here's a story I knew it

00:12:22 - 00:12:43 | Speaker 8:

That's right You're the lovely lady Two kids All of them had hair brunettes Like their mother But the mother's is fake About a man named Wes With two kids of his own

00:12:43 - 00:12:45 | Speaker 2:

By the way, do you have Alice?

00:12:45 - 00:12:46 | Speaker 8:

Is there an Alice somewhere?

00:12:48 - 00:12:57 | Speaker 7:
