I'm Mange Shatikular, and I'm back with a new season of my podcast, Skyline Drive. This time I talk to scientists, biopunks, curmudgeons, blues owners, super seniors, and Goa's top cryotherapy lab to try to understand this obsession with living forever and what it means for all of us. And I get into a bit of trouble along the way.

00:01:02 - 00:01:07 | Speaker 1:

I'd say probably start bone smashing. That doesn't work. Make it look more defined. They say it works. I don't know.

00:01:08 - 00:01:14 | Speaker 6:

Listen to Skyline Drive, How to Live Forever on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

00:01:46 - 00:02:15 | Speaker 2:

For years, The Unhoused has been presented as a monolith in mainstream media. We The In House is a podcast that's changing the narrative. I'm Theo Henderson, and I created the show while I was unhoused on the streets of Los Angeles. We've grown into a two-time Webby Award-winning podcast, the only podcast that shares unhoused stories and news from the unhoused perspective. Listen to We The In House on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

00:02:16 - 00:02:52 | Speaker 8:

I need some help. I need a lot of help. That was a funnier joke Oh, we're supposed to laugh? That's okay Thank you Megan for being the only one We were shaking our heads in agreement I need some suggestions You are just the right people I'm good, that's good That's great Thanks I need to level up on something So I'm going to Canada to see Wes's family for the second time.

00:02:52 - 00:02:53 | Speaker 7:

Ooh, is that when it's going to happen?

00:02:54 - 00:02:55 | Speaker 8:

No, stop.

00:02:55 - 00:03:04 | Speaker 7:

We talked on the More Mojo podcast of the fact that we all believe that Shannon's going to be wearing a ring after the new year.

00:03:04 - 00:03:23 | Speaker 8:

I think you're going to be sorely disappointed, okay? But his family does a white elephant gift exchange, okay? Instead of buying gifts for everybody, and it's so fun. But last year I was the newbie, okay? I had never met any of these people before in my life. I only knew Wes. And what does the newbie pick as her white elephant gift? A candy cane G-string.

00:03:24 - 00:03:26 | Speaker 1:

Oh, hell yeah.

00:03:26 - 00:03:36 | Speaker 8:

That was the gift that I walked away with. Nice. So I want to hand it right back to his family this year. What can I bring for my gift? Does anybody have anything in this room that I can bring?

00:03:36 - 00:03:37 | Speaker 7:

So you don't want to hand that back?

00:03:38 - 00:03:42 | Speaker 8:

No, hand it back in the sense of like, I can play. I can play along.

00:03:42 - 00:03:45 | Speaker 3:

But you've only met them a few times. So where's the line?

00:03:45 - 00:03:47 | Speaker 8:

I don't know. I don't think there's a line with his family.

00:03:47 - 00:03:49 | Speaker 3:

I guess not if they put in their underwear.

00:03:49 - 00:03:50 | Speaker 7:

You should actually get a...

00:03:50 - 00:03:52 | Speaker 8:

Candy cane G-string, not underwear.

00:03:52 - 00:03:55 | Speaker 7:

You should take a picture of yourself in that.

00:03:55 - 00:04:01 | Speaker 8:

And frame it. And frame it. Oh, my God. That's really good.

00:04:01 - 00:04:02 | Speaker 7:

Or better...

00:04:02 - 00:04:04 | Speaker 8:

Maybe not you. Maybe not me. Wes. Wes. Yeah, Wes.

00:04:04 - 00:04:05 | Speaker 7:

I did Wes.

00:04:05 - 00:04:08 | Speaker 8:

I don't think I could do myself, but Wes would be down.

00:04:08 - 00:04:23 | Speaker 7:

Do you remember the classic Seinfeld where, what was it, Cosmo Kramer did the whole, like, or no, it was George Costanza. George, yeah. Remember he did that whole layout thing. You should do a picture like that. One of those type of pictures. What's that app that everybody's doing right now with their pictures?

00:04:24 - 00:04:26 | Speaker 8:

Oh, that AI thing.

00:04:27 - 00:04:36 | Speaker 7:

You should get that kind of a picture taken of you. Like have the G-string, or Wes, have the G-string, but then put it through that and then have it framed.

00:04:36 - 00:04:40 | Speaker 8:

That is such a good idea. All right, well, done. That was easy.

00:04:41 - 00:04:45 | Speaker 7:

So wait, so the family does this. It's kind of like a little jokey thing, huh?

00:04:45 - 00:04:58 | Speaker 8:

which could be uncomfortable when you're like the new person. It's interesting because the first gift that I pulled and it got stolen from me was a very, very lovely gift. Or no, wait, actually, yeah, the first gift that I pulled was a nice gift. It was like a journal.

00:05:00 - 00:05:16 | Speaker 1:

a candle and like some cozy socks like i can't remember what was what else was in it it was like a nice thing so some some members of his family do it legitimate and other people i can't even i think it was his cousin who put in the the g-string so it just depends it depends on what

00:05:16 - 00:05:21 | Speaker 6:

who you get when you're the uh person that's not you you know like you're just meeting the family

00:05:21 - 00:05:26 | Speaker 1:

and stuff that's always yeah and i pull out the g-string then i was mortified yeah that's funny

00:05:26 - 00:05:37 | Speaker 6:

I'm telling you to take a picture of Wes I think it would be great Did you guys hear the story about Mike And his packing Like little Mishap that happened

00:05:37 - 00:05:43 | Speaker 1:

Well he keeps talking about this turtleneck that he's wearing And he's so pissed that he has to wear it And I don't understand why Legitimately you look so nice

00:05:43 - 00:06:47 | Speaker 5:

This is not what I wanted to wear at all today And I feel super uncomfortable I packed So all like the last month I've been packing bags back and forth To come into town And I wear Christmas sweaters I got all these ugly sweaters I collect a bunch of them That's what I wear the entire month So we're packing for something else Because we're going to be taking off for Christmas break And my wife's got all the suitcases out And she's packing for the kids and herself And mine was also sitting right there But we have one that looks very similar to each other Like a suitcase that looks very similar So I was running out the door last night And they're all full of stuff And I grabbed the suitcase And it had nothing but her stuff in it And then a turtleneck that I think I'm going to wear I'm supposed to wear this for something. I don't remember what it was, but it needs to be cleaned. It's been sitting in there forever because half of the suitcases aren't even unpacked from another trip we went on. So I had nothing. I had nothing last night to wear, and I'm wearing the pants that I wore last night, the shoes that I wore last night, and a turtleneck, and I feel stupid, and I hate it so much. I'd rather wear the candy cane thong than wear this turtleneck right now.

00:06:47 - 00:07:16 | Speaker 6:

Actually, do you know what's funny is that there are buddies of mine that travel for work, and they have similar situations where one buddy of mine grabbed a suitcase or what he thought was his suitcase full of his clothes only to show up and it was nothing inside of it. So he went on a business trip and got to the hotel and the next morning had to figure out where the hell he could go to. Can you imagine if you went away on a vacation and you forgot your clothes or forgot your luggage?

00:07:16 - 00:07:28 | Speaker 5:

That's the panic that I went through last night is because I had nothing. I didn't have a toothbrush. I didn't have anything. So I had to go to, like, the gas station and get, like, a toothbrush and toothpaste, but I got in last night.

00:07:28 - 00:07:33 | Speaker 6:

What time do you arrive when you come into town for this, when you travel from Grand Rapids to the Detroit area?

00:07:33 - 00:07:41 | Speaker 5:

I get here a little bit later so that I'm literally just getting into the hotel. I get my clothes out and set up for the morning, and then I go to bed. I don't do anything else.

00:07:41 - 00:07:45 | Speaker 6:

Because you like to kiss kids at night and say goodnight to the kids and then drive the two hours.

00:07:45 - 00:07:52 | Speaker 5:

Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's awesome. So there wasn't, like, once I get here, I don't want to get back up and go do things. and so I was which is

00:07:52 - 00:08:00 | Speaker 6:

which is funny because I mean there is the mall is probably still open maybe I don't know does the mall stay open until 9 now or no I don't know

00:08:00 - 00:08:04 | Speaker 1:

for sure 9 it used to stay open like back in the day until like 10 or 11 I don't know if they still do that

00:08:04 - 00:08:15 | Speaker 6:

I always used to ask this question of people who goes shopping at the men's store that's inside of the airport but now I know who it is it's guys like you that grabbed the wrong suitcase that are the people that do that thing

00:08:15 - 00:08:19 | Speaker 4:

or you lost your suitcase right if they never got your luggage there

00:08:19 - 00:08:19 | Speaker 6:

Helena

00:08:19 - 00:08:23 | Speaker 3:

Yes, hi How are you guys doing today?

00:08:23 - 00:08:31 | Speaker 6:

We're doing good, except for Mike He's like way underdressed for us Wearing a nice turtleneck and his jeans from yesterday What's up?

00:08:31 - 00:08:39 | Speaker 3:

I wanted to comment on the white elephant gift I recently had one at my work And I actually brought in a spin mop

00:08:39 - 00:08:41 | Speaker 6:

A spin mop?

00:08:41 - 00:08:42 | Speaker 3:

I love a spin mop

00:08:42 - 00:08:43 | Speaker 6:

Is it the thing that

00:08:43 - 00:08:48 | Speaker 3:

You put it in the bucket of water And then you put it in the thing And then it dries it out

00:08:48 - 00:08:48 | Speaker 6:

Oh, yeah.

00:08:49 - 00:08:52 | Speaker 3:

Oh, I see those. Those are a game changer.

00:08:52 - 00:08:56 | Speaker 6:

That and a salad. Was it the salad shaker thing where it dries your salad?

00:08:56 - 00:08:57 | Speaker 4:

Salad spinner.

00:08:57 - 00:09:05 | Speaker 6:

Salad spinner. Yeah. So there you go. That's a good white elephant gift. That's all she had to say. What's up, Olivia?

00:09:06 - 00:09:07 | Speaker 2:

Hey there. How are you guys?

00:09:07 - 00:09:12 | Speaker 6:

Good. You have an idea for Shannon for her gift that she should give?

00:09:12 - 00:09:23 | Speaker 2:

I do. So on Amazon, they have penis-shaped charcuterie boards. and you can either get it going left or right. Okay, that's so funny. Chelsea has one.

00:09:24 - 00:09:27 | Speaker 6:

Chelsea's, her girlfriends did a penis charcuterie board night.

00:09:27 - 00:09:30 | Speaker 4:

Why does everything with novelty gifts end up being about the penis?

00:09:30 - 00:09:33 | Speaker 1:

No, but I really love that you could choose if it goes left or right.

00:09:34 - 00:09:38 | Speaker 2:

For my one elephant gift, I got these slippers.

00:09:38 - 00:09:41 | Speaker 4:

But core grandma at the holiday party is going to see.

00:09:41 - 00:09:41 | Speaker 1:

There's no grandma.

00:09:43 - 00:09:46 | Speaker 6:

Wait, who's all there at West's thing? It's his sister-in-law, his brother, right?

00:09:46 - 00:09:51 | Speaker 1:

No, it's his two sisters and two brother-in-laws, his brother, and then his nieces and nephews.

00:09:52 - 00:09:53 | Speaker 6:

Oh, my God. The nieces and nephews, how old are they?

00:09:54 - 00:09:57 | Speaker 1:

They're all older. Oh, good. His daughter is the youngest.

00:09:57 - 00:09:58 | Speaker 6:

Oh, so there you go.

00:09:58 - 00:09:58 | Speaker 1:

Yeah.

00:09:59 - 00:10:00 | Speaker 6:

They'll be like, we...

00:10:00 - 00:10:03 | Speaker 8:

knew it, she's got that weird kinky

00:10:03 - 00:10:13 | Speaker 3:

radio thing. No, it would be more like she fits right in. I feel like they set the bar with the G-string. You could definitely bring a ding-a-ling shaped charcoochie bar. They're actually really nice.

00:10:14 - 00:10:30 | Speaker 8:

Charcoochie. It's a coochie bar. By the way, did you guys buy a gag gift for your secret Santa person or did you guys buy a legit gift? I bought a legit gift. I legit gifted it. Yeah, me too. I got a turtleneck for them. Wait, did you forget to bring yours in?

00:10:30 - 00:10:34 | Speaker 10:

No, I got that But I'm dressed like Tyrese in the 90s

00:10:34 - 00:10:39 | Speaker 3:

If you had the brown fanny pack The rock on the staircase

00:10:39 - 00:10:44 | Speaker 10:

You should totally do that pose today

00:10:44 - 00:10:46 | Speaker 8:

What's up, Anna?

00:10:47 - 00:10:48 | Speaker 9:

Hi, good morning, guys

00:10:48 - 00:10:49 | Speaker 8:

Good morning, what's going on?

00:10:50 - 00:10:53 | Speaker 9:

In the Starbucks dressing line currently Oh, really?

00:10:54 - 00:10:55 | Speaker 8:

What are you getting for us?

00:10:55 - 00:10:56 | Speaker 9:

I'll bring you guys something

00:10:56 - 00:11:01 | Speaker 8:

That's all right. We'll drink with you in spirit. What's going on? You got an idea?

00:11:02 - 00:11:18 | Speaker 9:

Yeah, my family, we do drunken white elephant gifts. What is that? So basically, it can range from the cheapest of booze to the most expensive or a bag of McDonald's leftovers that you ate when you're drunk.

00:11:18 - 00:11:20 | Speaker 8:

Oh, my God. This sounds like a fun time.

00:11:21 - 00:11:27 | Speaker 9:

We've had it to where someone got old White Castle wrappers as a guest.

00:11:28 - 00:11:28 | Speaker 8:

Oh, my God.

00:11:29 - 00:11:32 | Speaker 9:

And very, very expensive alcohol as well. I like the idea.

00:11:32 - 00:11:36 | Speaker 10:

Does that say to you, like, that's a fun holiday party, or my friends need professional help?

00:11:37 - 00:11:43 | Speaker 8:

Both. I like the idea of doing that. That's actually more fun. What's going on, Jen?

00:11:44 - 00:11:46 | Speaker 9:

Good morning, handsome. How are you?

00:11:46 - 00:11:48 | Speaker 8:

Doing great. What's going on? Make us all feel good.

00:11:49 - 00:12:11 | Speaker 9:

I love you guys. um so yeah i went to a white elephant for one of my uh the company i worked for at the time and i got a goldfish oh that's the word yeah now you gotta take care of this thing it's the worst gift ever ever ever ever i i mean i mean mugged that chick for the rest of the night

00:12:11 - 00:12:18 | Speaker 10:

well let's not do any live uh live animals for gifts this christmas although

00:12:18 - 00:12:28 | Speaker 9:

Well, I have to say, it is the very best, worst gift to give. So, I mean, that is really a thunder maker. I mean, that's like, boom, nobody's going to beat that. You brought a goldfish.

00:12:28 - 00:12:33 | Speaker 8:

Yeah. Although, I will tell you this, that, Shannon, if you ended up opening up one of those mini ponies.

00:12:34 - 00:12:35 | Speaker 3:

Oh, I'd be so excited.

00:12:35 - 00:12:43 | Speaker 8:

You'd get all excited about that. Did I tell you last week that I met a lady when I was in Lexington, Kentucky, that raises mini ponies?

00:12:43 - 00:12:43 | Speaker 3:

Really?

00:12:43 - 00:12:46 | Speaker 8:

Yeah, and she's a listener of the show. She actually saw me at that airport.

00:12:46 - 00:12:50 | Speaker 3:

I love mini ponies, highland cows, alpacas.

00:12:50 - 00:12:53 | Speaker 10:

Can you get that across customs when you come back from Canada?

00:12:53 - 00:13:16 | Speaker 5:
