that he bought for his girlfriend so so this guy is a younger guy he's a friend he's a friend through my son um he bought his girlfriend a brand new shinola watch for christmas and he was very very proud of the the uh expense that he paid on this gift because he kept doing the whole thing of yeah here here show up show your watch show your watch and then he would do that and then he'd whisper in my ear i paid six hundred and thirty dollars for that thing you know one of those type of things and i'm like oh that's great oh that's wonderful oh great right so he kept doing the whole thing like sure no no show show the watch how great it is so i of course asked the question i said hey what time is it because i wanted to see if you know she can just like kind of show off her watch by showing the time she grabs her phone and looks at her phone and goes oh it's 12 34 and i go no no no you got the watch and she goes well and kind of like looking at her at her watch and i'm like what she doesn't know how to tell the time by looking at the hands unless it has the numbers on it and this thing has the roman numeral numbers on it so she doesn't know how to tell time now let me just say this to you she's entered i think She's in her 20s. I don't think that she's yet 30. Shouldn't everybody over the age of five know how to tell time? Don't you learn that in school?

No, and we also didn't learn how to use ham radios. Like, things become outdated. Oh, come on. Let's not talk about a ham radio.

You do still learn time. I know this because Smith learned it last year.

Okay, cool. But I'm with her. Fam, I know what Roman numerals are. I rush Greek. Like, I know most of the alphabet and the Greek alphabet, but it takes me a second, right? Like, I got to think about, I got to add up the X's, the I's, the V's, subtract. No, Roman numerals are screwy. I agree with you there. It's literally going to take me longer to read a clock that I know how to read than it would be to just look at my phone.

That's my question. Are we sure she really didn't know how to tell time and she was just not using her phone at convenience? Because that's what we normally do.

Habit. So here's the thing. Habit. I'm not going to jump to conclusions, but I'm going to tell you the full story. Okay. So the, no, the full story is, and by the way, I don't think it had Roman numerals. I think it actually had numbers on there, but the problem is it was the, the little hand. I'm going to teach you how to tell time right now, Megan, the little hand and the big hand were kind of close to each other because the little hand was right around the 12 and the big hand was just a little after 12. So it was kind of like, okay, hold on. What is the time? Oh, I'll just look at my watch or my phone. It's 12.04 or whatever it is, you know, on the phone.

Is this just like word problems on proficiency tests? Like, fam, you lost me in the first half. I got bored. What?

I did. Here's the thing, though. In that case, he bought the wrong watch. He should have just bought her like an Apple watch. Right. And she could have had the digital on there.

No, because it's an accessory. You want to look fancy and nice, but I don't need to actually use it. That is very true, Megan.

A lot of people do that for watches. Okay, so I have a watch that I usually wear every day. I say that and I'm not wearing it today. I'm pretty sure it hasn't worked since like July. Like I haven't, I haven't changed the battery and it needs to, to have a battery change, but I just like it because it's cute.

So it's interesting because I have a fear or not a fear, but I guess it's kind of like I'm OCD about if I put a watch on and I haven't worn it in a while and it stops, I have to reset it. Even if it has the date on there, because I feel awkward, weird if I don't have that.

I think mine still says, like, July 1st.

Don't look close. I'm with you, though. We got our daughter a JoJo Siwa watch, which if you want to get her that, you can get her that, too. Jo, if you want to get her JoJo Siwa. It's very easy to read the time on it. But it was driving me nuts. It was driving me nuts because she didn't want to set any of it. She just wanted it lit up, and it's got JoJo Siwa on it. She didn't want to set the time. She didn't want to set the date. and it drove me absolutely nuts. Hey, Marlene, what's going on?

It's funny because I always forget who you are and when you call, and then when I hear your voice, I know who you are. But there has been times where, like, my sister Pat has said, why is that listener talking to you like you guys should actually be dating? And then my wife has actually made comments about you before with the whole boo thing. But I've not.

I like that. So they don't teach the kids. I have to teach a nurse who passes pills, and she's educated. She's a very smart nurse how to write a check. They don't teach them how to write checks. They don't teach them how to read the class, and if they do, they just touch it minimal, and it's with the numbers. It's not with the Roman numbers or the little dots.

You're saying they've been in schools. They're not doing this anymore? They're not learning this?

I had to teach my 15, he's 15 now, but I had to teach him cursive because they don't teach that in school anymore.

I still have one bill that they only take check or money order, and I'm like, oh, how archaic. I have to, like, every month I have to think, where's my checkbook for this one stupid check, and then I've got to find a stamp and an envelope. And it's such a pain in the butt in the digital world. There's a difference between it.

Well, here's the interesting thing. Like, people learn how, like, tying shoes, telling time, you know, the alphabet, you know, adding, subtracting, stuff like that. I'm shocked that there are people that don't know how to do it.

These kids nowadays got so much easier

So I'm 24, and I don't know how to read the clock, like how you were saying, if it's Roman numerals or if it's the numbers. It takes me probably like five minutes to figure out what time it is, and I also don't know how to read cursive. I learned it once in fifth grade, never used it since. Wow, yeah.

Okay, so if somebody writes in cursive, it's difficult for you to read?

Yep, don't know what they're saying. I know what the E's look like and the M's look like because they're, you know, it's in my name. But if it's like full sentences, I have no idea.

What do you do? Because I wonder if this will hamper you from your job.

Your job uses cursive.

People write notes all the time.

KP I did I learned it in sixth grade I vividly remember it because I'm dyslexic and it was hard for me anyway.

And then I never used it once after.

But that might be more of the case, the dyslexia, because I have trouble reading things because I have, I believe, I don't know if I've ever, I've never been diagnosed with it, but I always have believed that I'm dyslexic because words move when I'm reading them. But I think that it's interesting that you say that you can't read cursive at all.

the one and the 12 are on the clock so even if you don't know roman numerals you can still kind of tell time educated guess yeah yeah i only know roman numerals every super bowl i have to figure But I usually have to look it up first to know.

Barb, I want you to know this. Being in radio taught me how to tell time, and I can tell it three different ways. Like right now, it's 8.18 or 18 minutes after 8, or it's if you've got to be somewhere before 8.30, 12 minutes, you've got to get there.

So I have a Cadillac, and in the middle has the old school, you know, regular hands clock. Fancy. And my daughter is 14 and thought that was an extra speedometer so the passenger could see.

I will tell you this. On certain cars like that, like the Cadillacs, the higher-end cars, they do that. They put the fancy little clock in there.

It looks so silly to me.

Well, I got the 10 years ago. I got the 300C, and they put it in there to make it refined, luxurious. And for six months out of the year, it was the wrong time because they had no instructions on how to change it for Daylight Savings.

And she was filling out a job application in where it said employee signature. She said, Dad, I don't have a signature. I had no idea how to write in cursive. And being a freshman.

Yeah, my daughters had the same problems when they were getting their driver's license. Like, I don't know how to sign this.

I just recently had a document come back to me and tell me that they couldn't do it because my signature didn't match up with my signature the first time I signed.

Yeah, but even signatures nowadays, like I had to sign an official document and it was a digital, like you click a button online. You're not signing anything anymore. And it makes the signature for you. Right.

Or you use your finger sometimes on iPads and things. I never put the right signature. I just squiggle.
