All right. It is Mojo in the morning. God, there were so, hold on a second, there's so many crazy stories from this weekend. I want to mention one in particular because I want people not to give DTE energy a bad rap for this because obviously there's nothing they can do about just bad people. But there was a story that came out of our listening area in the Detroit area that has made national news right now, where two guys went to a home in Rochester, Michigan, and they posed as DTE workers. So they posed as they were working for DTE and that there was a gas leak and they were there to fix the gas leak. So they looked like they worked for something.

They had a clipboard. They had a credential, a badge, a vest.

They came to the front door and they said, here's DTE. We're checking for gas leaks. So he said that through the ring cam. The family opened up the door only to have them take them hostage, take the 72-year-old man into the basement where they killed him, and they tied up his wife, and then they took off. Well, there was a search for them all across, not just our area, but across the country. They put out a nationwide search, and we have an update right now from Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard, good friend of the Mojo in the Morning Show. So, Mike, how are you?

Morning. You know, obviously a very, very sad case, something that we're very engaged in at every level. We've been working around the clock on it, and we wanted to make sure the public, as you said, doesn't hold us against DTE. These are bad people that were coming there to do bad things, and they were impersonating a legitimate and a good company.

So, Mike, the guys showed up, the family lets them in, which I probably would have done too, which obviously DTE is now coming out saying that if somebody does come to your door, they would have appropriate, I guess, paperwork or something like that that they would show you on that? How would you keep from something like this happening?

Yeah, I would not rely on paperwork because, you know.

we've seen people, you know, fake police credentials. You know, there's so many different access points. What I would do, and I would encourage people to do, if someone shows up at their door and it's not an expected visit, like you don't have an appointment with a company, be it a utility or somebody else, don't give them access to your house until you independently look up Google, whatever your case may be, the phone number of that company and call that company and say, do you have a worker trying to gain access to my house right now? Because, you know, you just don't know until you do. And so, you know, it's not just a utility worker. If you remember a number of years ago, we had a similar thing happen in the area where a person showed up on the porch during the holidays with a pretty looking gift basket and said, you got to sign for it. And they opened the door, pushed their way in, and a very tragic circumstance followed that. So I don't recommend people open the door to anybody they don't know 100 who they are and why they're there and if you tell them look just leave the delivery in the ports and they say you got to sign for it i'd rather you know tell friends and family and the public so you miss a delivery and they got to come back yeah you know um that's fine it's much better than the alternative if that person

is there with bad intentions so let's talk about this case so a 72 year old man that lived there He was the owner of a pawn shop that was in the Detroit area. Are we believing, because once I heard the pawn shop thing, I started thinking, okay, this was definitely a targeted thing. Am I wrong in thinking that, or do I watch too much Law & Order SVU or something?

No, we think it was targeted as well. We think very much so that, you know, because this was a small business, that they, like many times again that we've seen in the past, targeted this family and this home because they were under the belief that either cash or proceeds or potentially, in this case, jewelry, since they own a jewelry and a pawn business, may have been in the home. You know, we know they were looking for cash and jewelry and valuables. So I think it was targeted. We don't know that for a fact, but just my intuition based on how many I've seen across my career, that's what I believe.

Okay, you guys were able to apprehend one of the people, one of the suspects, and the guy got all the way down to Shreveport, Louisiana? That is crazy.

Yeah, he got in the wind pretty quick, and part of that was because Ring wasn't helpful to us, quite frankly. You know, we had the owner's permission, we had a search warrant, and Ring wouldn't give us access to the account. They reset the password, but the problem was is that it had two-factor authentication, and it was going to her phone, which was taken in the robbery. And so we couldn't get access to the account. They knew that and had our detectives – they told our detectives to send them an email that they would forward to the law enforcement coordinating group or whatever they call it within the company. Well, that's not very helpful when you've got exigent circumstances looking for a murderer. So thankfully, our detectives were smart and our computer crimes people were there working it with them. And what they did is they ended up having a new phone purchased and then had Verizon transfer the service from the stolen phone to the new phone so that when two-factor authentication kicked over, they could verify it on the new phone in her name. That's unbelievable.

That is genius. Wait, first off, yeah, props to your guys and gals for figuring that out. But that's unbelievable that you guys did not have the video that we saw for how long of a time? Because Ring wouldn't give it to you.

Hours. That's crazy. We got that out. As soon as we got it, I posted it myself because I knew it'd be very distinctive just based on what I saw. So I got a short clip, had my computer crimes guy cut it up so you could hear the voice and got the best image from the one video and put it out there immediately. And we started getting tips. But at that point, it had been hours since this had occurred. And obviously, you know, the guy was into the wind pretty quickly, you know, given how far he had got. He was all the way down in Louisiana. So, you know, maybe we could have caught him in the state.

Who knows? Is the guy that got caught, the first guy that was in that video? Because there was another guy standing behind him that looks like he's hiding in the video.

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it was the guy that was kind of front and center, the big guy.

Is he going to rat out the other guy, or what's going to happen here? What do we know?

Well, time will tell. But we're still asking the public to give us any information. If they knew the primary suspect, whose picture and name is on our Facebook page and Twitter, Or if they know that person, they know his accomplices or friends, maybe they know who that other person is. So we're looking for tips. They can either call us or call 1-800-SPEAK-UP because, you know, we haven't gotten nearly this.

same number of tips on suspect number two that we did on one, because one was, you know, very recognizable, his voice. We had all of that. We didn't have that so far on the second suspect.

That is pretty freaking amazing that, uh, that that's how this works, that you're able to catch these guys and catch them in the act. What a horrible thing for this family to have to deal with. I, I've had a number of people reach out to me that know the family knew this 72 year old man that was killed, which how senseless is that they're turning a robbery into a murder.

It's ridiculous on so many levels.

Yeah, and say nothing but amazing things about the family, which, God, this is really scary.

No, it's terribly scary, and I talked to the neighbors, you know, because I was there on scene and in the house and talking to neighbors, and the neighbors, you know, he was the nicest guy I always talk to everybody and you know they're such a sweet person and it just you know breaks your heart to see that this is how you know he is dealt with by today's world such little

value for human life yeah it's just very sad quick question to the guys in the room here for a second would if somebody comes to your door and knocks on your door are you an open to the door person

because I'm an open to the door person I am an open this I feel terrible saying this in front And if Sheriff Bouchard, I feel like you're going to yell at me and you should. But this happened the week before last where two guys came to the door and they looked like nice and put together. And thank goodness they were legit and they were from my neighborhood and they were trying to like, you know, stop a road from being paved or whatever. But I, the same way as you, Mojo, I feel like, I don't know. But now I also have had, remember workers coming into my backyard. Yeah. Remember last year? And I ended up calling DTE and asking them if my home, I gave them my address, if my home was on a list for any sort of work being done and stuff, and they will get back to you immediately without answer. So if you're unsure, I mean, all it takes is a quick phone call, and it's not like you're going to be put on hold or anything. They do answer you right away.

Yeah. Don't, don't, don't. I am going to yell at you. Don't open your door. Because, you know, you just don't know. And as I said, I've seen this in multiple cases where people impersonate either a utility worker or a delivery person. And everybody's getting packages these days and going into the holidays even more so. Oh, it might be a gift that I'm not aware is coming. And I don't want them to take it away. Well, let them take it away because, you know, there will be a second choice to either have it delivered again or you can go pick it up. Better safe than sorry. We've heard that a million times.
