All right, Mojo on the morning show. So Chelsea and I have friends of ours who have a daughter who goes to Michigan State. And this week, MSU, the Spartans, are on their spring break, and we were having a talk with them. And I don't know if you guys heard this. We talked about it on our trending news, but there was a story that happened. It started on Friday when four Americans were ambushed, beaten, and then we found out, as we all thought that they were kidnapped by this Mexican gang, that two of them were killed and two of them actually were beaten and thank God they survived. Well, MSU is on spring break this week. And do you know how many people I know, including this family, that have a son or a daughter or somebody in their life, a brother or sister that's on spring break in Mexico right now with the story coming out. So our friends called their daughter after the story happened and came out on Monday that I think it was Monday or Tuesday that, that, you know, they found the bodies of the two of them and they made their daughter get on the first plane that they could come back, which by the way, it was not until last yesterday, because if you, if you, have you ever been to Mexico, they only do like flights. It seems like Saturdays to Saturdays to a lot of these destinations.

Yeah.

Unless you can fly to like through Atlanta or through Houston or Dallas or one of those places. So Spike and Shannon, Megan, Mike, KP, Lydia, our friend's daughter was there with a bunch of her friends. And the parents all are now freaking out. And now my friend is not an overly protective dad by no means. He's just realistic. And he said, you know what? I don't want my daughter to be the next victim of this. And to show you how serious this is, and this, by the way, this warning has been out way before this story came out. The State Department warned with a travel advisory that Americans should not be traveling to several places in Mexico. And here's with their advice. Their warnings were issued for some of the most popular states, like Quintetana Row, where Cancun is, I think I pronounced it somewhat okay. Also, the Baja California Sur, which is where Cabo is, Los Cabos. Those are two areas that they say are the highest risk right now with these Mexican gangs that are out there, these drugs.

yeah there's a distinction in the warnings the ones in quintana rue around cancun and stuff they're a lower level they're a level two and it's because there's a big battle going on i don't care if it's a level no no minus one no but i just want to give you the distinction so we're all like we know where we're talking about along the northern border is insane and dangerous because of the the organized crime activity you have like you know battles murder carjacking kidnapping that's where like the story we've been hearing about this week but the one down around cancun is there's this is there's always been this level to a warning because you still got to keep your head on a swivel and be very careful about the situation you're in but right now there's a big battle between the taxi drivers and the uber ubers coming into the tourist area and there's this big battle where the drivers are messing with each other's cars there's oh my god see that

in itself i'd be like you're not going yeah here's the here's the problem though just so you understand this if you are in cancun you're not in an area that the u.s government can send people to go help you and get there in like less than three hours or four hours like it's not a situation where it's a It's right across the border, like even this situation with these four that that ended up getting kidnapped where they they had, you know, they they had sent in FBI right away. You are so far away from the border and being able to go. And I'm not. And so my friend, my friend works. He's he works in the automotive industry and actually is pretty decently, you know, high up at at General Motors. and his fear is if they find out that who their dad who her dad is that's a fear that because he travels down there from uh to mexico all the time for work purposes all the time and he travels with security so and and there are a lot of of our listeners that do this they go back and forth and listen i'm not bagging on mexico at all i love mexico my brother lives in puerto vallarta he owns a restaurant in Puerto Vallarta so I want travel to to happen there because it affects my brother's livelihood but I'm just going to say this right now something's got to be done and if if you are somebody if I'm going to go on a vacation right now and if my vacation is to somewhere in Mexico I might rethink it I might rethink and think about going somewhere else and I'm not saying

it's safe I'm saying there's a big difference between the two warnings that the U.S. consulate an embassy has put out because the big thing i always tell parents because parents come to me a lot asking because they know i i really read up a lot about travel and stuff and my big thing is you gotta stress with the kids or your family if you're going on a family vacation you do not leave those resorts you do not like go off and don't meet people that are locals and let them take you yeah like you can't you can't trust that people are going to take you to the aztec uh hey go on this one day destination and if you don't know that company and you didn't do the background research it could be a very you could be putting yourself in a very dangerous situation that i believe i believe i would let my daughter be safe on a resort but would you would you let

your daughter go would you let your daughter go to mexico and trust that she's just going to stay with her girlfriends getting from the airport to the resort well i without me being there i probably

I wouldn't want her to go to permit, period, because there's so many other safer places to go where I don't have to worry about you just getting from the airport to the resort. A lot of the resorts have transportation included, but they don't all do that.

Right. So I've gone to visit my brother numerous times at Puerto Vallarta. I've gone to Cabo a couple of times. We've gone on vacations and stuff. And I've also gone to Cancun. And the one thing that I will tell you is the walking out of the airport to the mass sea of people, you know, of screaming at you, telling you that they're going to take your bags, they're going to help you with stuff. OK, that was a little anxiety filled, but it's still safe. You're at least at the airport. It's the getting into a car that you don't know exactly who the person is. It's, you know, think about these people. These people drove across the border in a minivan while they were driving, just driving down the street. This gang that, you know, this cartel gang, you know, just takes them right away. And now they're saying there's all kinds of rumors that are coming out about these people. And I feel bad for their families. But there's rumors like were these four people involved in something bad? Maybe they stopped for something. It doesn't make a difference. If you go to a country, if I go somewhere and I'm going to travel, I expect that I'm going to go and I'm going to be safe. You know, I've been to places before where, you know, you feel like you aren't as necessarily safe, but at least.

I know that if something happens to me, the, that the U S government has the ability to be able to help me.

You know, I remember when I was in high school, there was a group that went to Mexico, um, and a couple of the kids got thrown in jail and I can't remember the reason why I'm sure it had something to do with drinking obviously, but, um, they, the rest of their group came home and those kids, parents had to fly down to Mexico to help get them out of jail. I mean, that's another risk that, you know, all violence aside that.

Well, and there's a lot of corruption within the government. And I mean, the last time I was in Mexico, there was a checkpoint by the police to pull over. And, you know, you see all the guys staying on the side of the room with the automatic weapons strapped to their chest. And and my driver didn't want to stop for the checkpoint. I'm like, well, it's police. I don't we want to stop. And he's like, no, no, no, you don't stop. Sometimes they're just trying to take money from the tourists. And I'm like, oh, boy, you know, that's what you have to be careful of.

Here's Lydia, get this. Get that 734 caller on the one that says they're changing the station. Their text messages are Cabo is safe. There's always a travel advisory. The people in Cabo are amazing. The locals are amazing. I'm not saying the locals aren't amazing. Like I just said to you, my brother's a freaking local in Puerto Vallarta. He's a Mexican citizen. And I'm not saying that the locals aren't great. I'm saying the drug cartels are not safe. My brother and I have had this conversation numerous times, And he hates when they do these travel advisories because what does it do? It empties their hotel rooms. And I say to him all the time, well, then why do you guys not have a president or a government that does something against these drug cartels? You know, go after these drug cartels and stop these guys from from causing the problems there. You know, if you're a Mexican citizen, you're fearful of the drug cartels.

um and if you were to reverse the situation there's other countries that put warnings out about america and the violence here and we know it's not everywhere in the country there's places you have to be smart about and the rest of the country is a great place so well and there are

probably some places that i i don't necessarily know if i want my teenage son on a spring break

i would just like to point out at this moment that y'all made fun of me for going to walt disney world for my spring break no it was very very safe but i would also like to point out that you

went on a mexican trip by yourself once that well no my sister was living in mexico city

and i went to see my yeah i know you guys wanted to put a tracker on me which honestly i appreciate

what happened to your aunt so my aunt's cousin they built a house in mexico brand new house on like this whole land and um the cartels came and took it so i was like why didn't they call the cops or whatever but they don't so the cartels they run like a certain part of mexico the cartels

run the cops the cops are scared of the cartels yeah and that along the northern border there's a lot of little towns where you're right it's just the the government is not in charge of those

police anymore no they're scared of the cartels so what ends what ends up happening in that case did they lose their their place oh yeah the cartels you can't do nothing about the cartels

The cartels are very, very, they'll kill you. They'll go after you. They'll go after your family. They'll go after your kids. They'll go after, yeah, everybody.

So the big thing now is they're saying that people who are traveling, you know, and going on vacation, to not try to look, you know, flaunting, you know, your Louis Vuittons and your, you know, jewelry and all the rest of that stuff. because if they think you got money there, they, a lot of cases, they use it as an opportunity to, you know, kidnap and just try to get family to pay a ransom. And I don't know if I want to deal with something like that. I remember going to Punta Cana and everybody was like, you got to go to this liquor store. It's off grounds and the liquor is so much cheaper there. And I'm like going, oh, great. And then how do I get there? And they're like, oh, we got a guy that will come pick you up and take you there. And I, I went with a friend and I thought, this is the dumbest thing ever because I'm, I'm like fear, fearing, God forbid, something happened to me and all I, you know, I'm doing, I'm saving what? $35 or whatever. Um, what's up, Nicole? How you doing?

So we hired, well, we went to Cancun in a nice resort, all professionals, and the guys that we met there were all attorneys, and they hired a bodyguard, and I thought it was insane. But we went out. We had a great time. Everyone drank. I just remember this.

silhouette of this big bodyguard on the side well we get back and we're talking to all the people from the resort and listen to their stories there was two australian um military guys there that they were held up at the bar by the waiters or waitresses the shot girl by the knife that they had to hand over their money right there um there was everyone had a story of a knife or a beating or this or that which they were all let go and fine they just had to give up all their money or whatever was on them and they were free to go ahead and leave and come back so we're sitting there like oh my god i guess we needed the bodyguard to go to coco i don't know if i can say the place coco bongo big club yeah coco bongo was one of them yeah then there was a couple other like night foam parties that we had no idea that this bodyguard was needed until we got back and

heard everyone else's story wow wow that's crazy by the way how do you find bodyguards is that kind of like do you go down to the concierge and they give you a bodyguard i don't know the lawyer

guys have this bodyguard you know and i think a couple of them wanted to like party party so they wanted to make sure they were okay yeah i have friends and family like mojo that work in automotive

and the companies assign a bodyguard to pick you up at the airport and watch you the whole time because a lot of times tourists want to venture off and be like well i'm here only here for two nights i want to see the nightlife and that's where the trouble starts if you don't know have There's somebody around to keep an eye on you.

And there's a family that sits outside of Coco Bongo's where it's this cute little old lady and all of her little kids, and they sell bracelets. No. Everyone knows those little kids are grown men in little people bodies, and they have knives. Wait, what? Really?

No. Come on. That sounds like a— No, they'll pick—what they do is they have a scam. There's a scam. And my brother told me about this when we were in Puerto Vallarta. He said, you just got to be careful of this. The little old ladies, like, get you nice, and then the kids come up, and they'll try to, like, grab your purse or something like that.

Okay, I believe that.

I mean, that happens in big cities in the U.S.

Yeah, that's a big thing in Rome and other places. You just got to really be careful.

Hey, so my two friends and I were in Cozumel. We were there on a cruise. It was a stop. We were there all day, and we went to go just, like, get in a cab. This was, like, 10 years ago to go back to the dock. and uh we actually basically discovered that we were getting kidnapped um and i happened to be the less drunk of all my friends and we and he actually stopped at the stop sign and we ran out of got out of the car and ran out he had like a gun on his hip um we thought he was a cab driver um and he was not so we i actually remembered like where we were and i kept telling him like no go right go right and he would go left and it got darker and darker and then finally I just was like we have to go and so we ended up running back to the dock

well all I say is this and this is what my friend brought up too we were talking about this and he's like listen he goes I want my daughter to have a great vacation but he goes I don't want her to be you know that one person and if I can prevent it from happening I know I can't prevent her from you know she goes to Michigan State God forbid she could have been at the union you know what I mean the night of the shooting but he's like I'm just not going to try to put her in a harmful situation and then we started talking about that Natalie Holloway and the conversation was all these people that go on these vacations and his daughter's down there with two other girls and it's just the three of them together but it's like I think I would be more protective of my kids if that was the case than if my kid was going on vacation or going on a spring break with like 45 people that are all together because at least they keep maybe a count of each other, but I don't know. One last call here, and this one is to Amy, because I feel bad, because here we are talking about all this stuff, Amy, and what do you have planned here in a couple weeks?

We're going to Cancun in two weeks. There's a bunch of families from our neighborhood going. There's about 30 of us going to Moon Palace, and I talked to the guy that's heading up our trip. He's been there several times. He's from Mexico. He's lived there. He said, Amy, I get why you're nervous. He said, but as long as you stay in the resort, he said, we're going to be fine. He said, you just got to know where to go, where not to go. I have to admit, I'm pretty nervous about it. But I also, I read up on it like Spike did. And I realized that you're at a lower risk if you're on the resort.

Yeah, stay on that property, you'll be fine. I've stayed in Moon Palace before.

It's like anything else. You don't go in the bad areas of Detroit. You don't go in the bad areas of Chicago. You've got to be smart about it. So I don't think we need to scare people into not going. You just have to be safe about it. If you're going with a bunch of people, just make sure you don't go anywhere alone.

And be smart about how you get, like Spike said earlier in the conversation, from the airport to the hotel. That's the big thing. I would prearrange that with a reputable company. Well, hotels provide transportation. Okay, so that's good. Take their transportation.

Yeah. So that doesn't worry me at all. So I think it'll be fine. But I just think it's interesting. And you're right. They need to do something about the drug cartels, but it's sort of out of our hands. It's a corrupt government.

Well, it's, you know, it's sad. It's sad because the, you know, Mexican economy is based off of our tourism, right? That's where they're making their money is the tourism and then the money that we bring by putting factories and things like that there. And if they can't promise that they're going to keep, you know, our citizens and other citizens from other countries safe, it's going to completely ruin their tourism. And it's done this in the past. It's happened before. If you look at history, it's like repeating itself. But all right. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for the call. I just want to know where can I go to get my hair braided, my hair braided. Whenever we went to any of these vacations, every mom had a daughter that wanted to get her hair braided.
