I don't know if you remember, but I believe it was so long ago that it was yesterday that I said, man, I heard Toledo was having a Christmas party. Turns out we did. I didn't read the emails. So did you totally miss it? You said we did. It already happened? Yeah, it was yesterday when I wasn't here.

Oh my gosh, yesterday morning you were bitching about not having a Christmas party.

And I was bitching to Tony yesterday going, I wish I would have known that this Christmas party had an ugly sweater contest. I would have brought something. He was like, you did know. I emailed you. I went, oh. But he should know better. He should text me because I'm not going to write the email. It's just, it's not going to happen. Anyways, moving forward from that. We had a new guy start for the first day yesterday, which was our Christmas party here in Toledo. And I think that's the stupidest first day. I feel so bad for the kid because not only did they have, like, all of these festive activities for people who already know each other, there was a potluck that he probably didn't bring anything to. And then if I was him, I'd feel awkward eating if I didn't bring anything. There was a gift exchange that he just wasn't a part of. So everybody was doing a gift exchange and then he didn't like who thought, you know, what day would be great the day that that person can't participate in anything to start their job here.

Although did they give you guys like a gift card or anything like that as a gift? Because what if for what a day you wouldn't know you haven't even worked.

Yeah, it's true. It was probably in the email.

You haven't even worked, you know, a day and you're already getting a Christmas gift from the company.

But wouldn't you feel awkward if your first day was the Christmas party?

Yes, well, I would. I have seen this happen a lot. You know, we restaff sometimes. And especially it seems like the sales department will restaff. And these people will come here and they'll get their feet wet over the holidays when nobody's really in the office. And I always think to myself, the Christmas party is like a weird place to go to. But because especially because you don't know who's who's somebody that you work with and who somebody is like a spouse, you know, if you're doing and then you're like walking around going, man, I feel crazy.

And then I try and remember 80 names that day from everybody.

But isn't it a good time to do it? Because you're forced to. I mean, not that you wouldn't go around and talk to people, but you're probably other people are probably busy when you're starting at other times.

Yeah, I can see it that way, too. Like, it makes it easy that everybody's in a good mood. They're probably drinking a little bit. Maybe. I don't know. When I was in college, I had a temp job that was at an advertising, like graphic design. They would actually do print ads. And the lady hired me. She goes, oh, by the way, when you start Monday, it's spirit day. And you're supposed to wear like the craziest outfit ever. I spent the whole weekend sweating, thinking she's playing a prank on me. I was sure she was saying that. So the weird first guy, first day would show up in this crazy outfit. So I just wore crazy, like these bright purple shoes and brought a change of shoes in my bag. Because I was like, I'm just going to say.

in the morning hi nikki hi hey what's up oh gosh i had my first day on tuesday and it was at the Christmas party it was so awkward because my boss was not there nor the other HR lady so I'm introducing myself hi I'm Nikki I'm with sales and uh no one even like said their names I barely knew I'm like I met with a girl named Lindy or Lindy and it was so awkward but you know I'm really outgoing so I just kind of made the best of it but I sat there and just ate my chicken and

you know we did a thing like 12 years ago do you guys remember sending me down the street there was a big office building that was built and you sent me to just show up at a random christmas party and see how long i could go yeah as a street scam just introducing myself to people and see who

would notice that i don't work there i will i drive by that building anytime we go to uh big tommy's i drive by that building all the time and think about you and remember it was like because there was a smoke break area too and like you're walking out and i kept thinking about the fact that if that happened in our building with some of these new sales people that are here i have no idea sometimes who they're like i would have no idea yeah like i i don't know sometimes who to let in and who not to let in at the front door you know because you're not an excuse to stop letting me in by the way stop doing that well you're always incognito you know what i mean you're always wearing that santa hat of yours and stuff um i i think that this time of the year is an interesting time of the year for starting new jobs but it's also an interesting time when kids transfer schools have you seen that that will happen from time to time like at school like a kid will transfer like I think you should transfer at the beginning of semesters for these kids like beginning of school year yeah beginning of like in maybe even January there have been some times where like I look Luke goes to a Catholic school that's a very like it's a really really nice school that a lot of a lot of kids like uh or a lot of parents want you know when things got crazy with uh COVID and stuff we're transferring their kids into it and Luke would tell me stories about like new kids that would start in class and i thought to myself man that's gotta be tough it's gotta be like brutal because you're coming in and you're trying to meet people and it's like the end of the year and can you imagine you're a kid that transferring in and you're like a junior in

high school or whatever that's gotta be really tough i did it in the middle of a year to a small school where my grade only had 90 kids and so everybody had been in school together for seven years and they all knew each other intimately and it was the most awkward thing in the entire world

Yeah. I remember the new boy that transferred into our school. It was in middle. It was in grade school. It was at St. Mike's. And I remember that the kid was like this good looking kid. Like he was one of those kids. He's one of those kids whose mom did his hair in the morning. And yet he was like eighth grade. And he was like, no, but no guy wakes up and does their hair that good. Like mom's definitely like a hairstylist. And he came to school and every girl all of a sudden is like flirting with him. And I want to show him around and all this stuff. And all of us guys were like, this guy's a dick.

Yeah, but were all those girls flirting with you before he came anyway?

Never. They didn't even recognize me. Yeah, I would come to school and I would have like, you know, spaghetti stains from the night before his dinner on my shirt.

Is that when you were wearing those big glasses?

Oh, Shannon, why do you bring that up? The rose colored ones.

Now, can I tell you the funniest thing? You know what I found the other day? Can I tell you the pictures that I found? And I showed it to Luke, and Luke was dying laughing. Hold on. Let me see if I got it. Oh, here you go. This is me on Santa's lap.

Yes, I've seen that picture before. I remember that photo. You can hardly see Santa. We need to post that. It's a tradition now. Come on. Santa's like poking around. You were the biggest little boy that probably sat on his lap that day.

If you look at the picture closely, Santa Claus, his face is squinting because his leg is about to lose all the blood in it.

How old were you in that picture?

Can I tell you? Honestly, I think I was in like the third or fourth grade. No, you were not.

You look like a football linebacker.

Have you seen the picture of that kid that's like the 12-year-old football player with the mustache? Okay, he's not 12 years old.

That kid is in his 20s. No, he's not. I went to school with a kid who had a full beard when he was 11. He looked like a 30-year-old man when he was 11.

a long day so i walked over to a bar and i walk in and there's like a table there i'm like whatever it's dead i sit down he serves me a beer then all these people come in like dress so nice so i'm like so the bartender what's going on and he's like oh this is like a work party for a company i had no association with i'm like oh my god like do i need to leave and they're like no no no so i ended up grabbing like a name tag i was talking to people they were taking professional pictures I was in, like, five pictures.

Ah, that's great. And did you have to pay for your drink, or did you just throw it on the company's tab?

No, I paid for the drink. Oh, okay. I wasn't getting involved in any of that.

But did it make you want to work for this company? Were they that nice of people?

Yeah, I think so. I got someone's number. It was funny.

Where is the party and will there be alcohol?

Yes, there will be alcohol and hors d'oeuvres. So, but there will be a lot of, like, representatives from the company and just a bunch of people. I have no idea who they are.

Can I be honest with you? Don't overdrink.

Yeah. Because especially if you're not even starting until after the holiday.

Yes. Yes. And she thought it was a good idea that I come in. So I'm going to have to, you know, keep that in the back of my mind. Don't overdo it because, you know, I could tend to get a little, you know, I'm nervous. Oh, boy. You know, drinks are flowing. So.
