This is the Bishop Statement at Bishop State Community College. We want you to hear what our students, educators, and business leaders have to say.

I would say Bishop State's like a home for people. It may not be like a four-year where you have a dorm, you have a roommate, you have a rec center, but it's still a place you can go meet new people, classmates, people in the hallway, make friends with advisors on all these teachers and everything like that. It's just a place you can feel like yourself and not try to be that you don't want to be. With this program, I learned networking a lot. We've had two dinners with heads of different companies dealing with shipping or even game design builds, dealing with AutoCAD or 3D modeling. So really being able to meet new people or meet heads of new people has been really helpful. I don't come from a wealthy family, so four years were kind of not out the picture, but less probable for me to go to. Bishop State with my scholarship, it cut my price in half and made it way easier for me to go to school for the same 12 credits I would go for a four-year.

It's Mojo in the morning. Shannon, you just have friends that just recently came back from a vacation. They went on a little getaway. And one of your friends found out on this vacation that they were allergic to something that I didn't know you could be allergic to.

Okay, so this is crazy. So my girlfriend, I don't know if she wants me to say her name so everybody's aware that this has been happening. But I would say for the better part of the past year, She's been getting these weird rashes all over her body, mostly on her hands and her fingers. And I'm talking red, bubbly, just yucky rashes that would not go away with the Benadryl cream, the cortisone, whatever. She's gone to various dermatologists and everybody kept telling her it's just eczema, it's psoriasis, it's whatever. She's done everything that you could possibly think of to get rid of this, but nobody could actually tell her what it was. So like she would just go in and out of having this rash all over her body. So she goes on vacation with her family and comes back and it is raging. And at this point, it's all over her body and she cannot figure out what it what it is. She finally goes to a doctor that said, you are allergic to the sun. And she had just been in the sun because she was at a warm weather destination. So she'd been in a bathing suit for the better part of a week. And now like moving forward, she's like, what am I supposed to do? that i'm allergic to the sun not go outside isn't that the craziest allergy i didn't know you could

be allergic to some but i guess you could have you know have issues uh from it right and i've

had some weird allergies but this one to me just like takes a cake can she wear sunscreen or something like that to keep from it she did that's what she did but i wonder if there's like a certain

spf that's that sounds uh like that would be a hard thing to be allergic to because what do you do like even just driving in your car with the windows for sure be crazy yeah that's why what's

what was the what's the craziest allergy that you have well so um i i went through a period of being very very allergic to latex and so if i um even if i wore a swimsuit that had been a lot of pretty much all swimsuits have latex in the like the lining um i would get a rash it would it looked like the outline of the bathing suit on my body and it would bubble up and then eventually after a couple of days it would be it would cover my entire body wow yeah by the way you do bubble

up one more time and i'm gonna say that moist panties is not as bad that moist panties doesn't

bother me bubble up makes me like

but that's what it is it's not a flat rash it's it's big it's gross blister yes yeah like a

bubbling up blister i don't have any allergies i would say i'm blessed and i'd like people who are allergic to grass that to me that's the same as the sun like how do you live literally like how do you live how do you not i'm actually allergic to grass if i lay in grass and roll

around i get a rash people say that yeah a lot of a lot of people too also have like hay fever and Things like that. Can't even be outside for a little bit without sneezing.

Everybody thinks it's weird that I'm allergic to avocado. That is weird. It's very, very specific avocado.

Is there anything else in that family?

I have no idea. But now everything's cooked in avocado oil. That's supposedly the healthier alternative. So I have to constantly be the annoying person that asks at restaurants, what kind of oil do you cook your food in?

But like your friend, I couldn't imagine not being able to go outside and enjoy my day without breaking out in a rash. Yeah.

And she will. It's not like she can't go outside. She has to go outside. But at what cost?

How about, like, you know, think about it. What's the most debilitating of them? I feel like the people with the peanut allergies have the most debilitating because there's peanuts in everything.

Everything. My cousin, Gerard, who you know, Gerard and Christina, he has a peanut allergy and he has to walk around with an EpiPen. He's at the bar one day and he's having fun with his cousins and his friends. Shout out to Chris and Jensen. And they're making friends with the bartender. Bartender's like, I love you guys. I'm going to give you guys a shot, like, drinks on me. It was a peanut butter, like, shot.

Oh, geez.

And he asked right before he drunk it and was like, hey, what's in this? And she's like, peanut butter. He threw it away. Like, are you trying to kill me?

Hey, Lisa, what's going on?

I was diagnosed in my 20s with a cold allergy. Cold? So if I go outside, I break out in hives, like, anywhere, even if my skin is not exposed to the cold.

Man, that's the allergy I want. Oh, why do you live in Michigan? I think I got that, too.

Do you live here?

I'm moving. Let's get out of here. Let's go. I'm out. You and I.

Yeah, it's called urticaria from the allergen. I have never heard of that before.

How cold does it have to be before it's the allergy?

Oh, good question. It doesn't even have to be. Like, I could hold a cold, like, soda bottle on my skin, and I'd break out in a hive.

That's wild.

Like, if you're just carrying a soda in.

Man, I would be always uncomfortable, you know?

Yep. It's itchy, and it gets worse as you get older.

That's nuts. Wow. All these calls here are people that are allergic to the sun?

Yeah.

What's going on? What's your name? Gabby. Hi, Gabby. Gabby, you got a sun allergy?

No, I'm actually allergic to the cold, too. I found out on my 24th birthday, right after COVID happened, when all the seating was only outdoors for restaurants, and my birthday was in January. My dad actually, my family thought it was a seafood allergy because it was the first time I had, like, that specific fish. Yeah. And my dad felt terrible because he recommended it to me, and my mom's like, you are breaking out into hives all over your face.

Wow. That's wild. So it's another one of those ones where the outdoor exposure to the cold gets you. What's up, Michael? How you doing, buddy, Mike?

Doing okay, man. and we're talking about the crazy allergies. I'm allergic to bad collars, so don't be a bad one. Give me a good story here. What's going on?

I'm allergic to almost anything that grows out of the ground. Really? So if I touch grass, pine trees, any sort of bush, I'll start breaking out in crazy hives.

What about, like, fruits and vegetables? How do you play recess?

That's nothing. It's just, like, trees and plants. I don't know what it is, but if I touch them, I break out in hives.

That is weird. So you just cannot, you cannot pick, are you telling me this?

So you get out of mowing the grass and doing any sort of landscaping at your house.

Are you sure you're not lying?

Yes. No, I'm not lying. Anytime I mow the grass, I start having an asthma attack because the smell of the fresh cut grass.

Wow. That's tough, man. That's a tough one. That's worse than a peanut allergy.

No, see, I like that because I don't like being outside and I would love to have a justification for it. How would you go on walks?

You couldn't do anything.

I think an excuse to stop working out would be nice.

Hi, I think I might have the craziest one. So when my cousin was a toddler, he was diagnosed with being allergic to himself.

Himself? What? Come on, explain that.

Yeah, so if he would sweat, if he would cry, he would break out in crazy hives all over his body. If he sweated, especially in the summer, it would get so much worse, he would actually have trouble breathing.

Wow. That is insanity. I have never heard that before.

He eventually outgrew it, but he had to have, like, an EpiPet on him at all times.

So I looked pretty crazy. Yeah, basically.

It's funny because it seems like that would be one of those ones where people would say, you know, does he just have anxiety or something like that? But, oh, this would be a horrible allergy. Kia, what do you think?

Oh, I am allergic to chocolate. Good morning, everyone. Good morning. I went to school with a girl who was allergic to chocolate. That sucks. That's the worst. White chocolate, dark chocolate, any type of chocolate. I can't even eat red velvet because that's part of chocolate.

What the heck? So what do you eat if you have one dessert?

Gummies.

That too. No. I eat like cheesecake or ice cream not bad when you say chocolate

is it also like anything with that cocoa in like if you have cocoa in anything

even like vanilla ice cream could have cocoa in it so you gotta be careful sometimes

yeah my husband usually gets like the vanilla bean and I told him he can't get that anymore trying to kill you I mean, yeah, I told him he's trying to get my life insurance money.

My name is Neterica Terry LaMille, and my major is general education. Some of the obstacles I have overcame at Bishop State is proving that I can show up consistently, even when my life was heavy. There are moments where I still feel overwhelmed by balancing work, leadership, parenting, and school, but Bishop reminded me that I'm capable of growth and not perfection, that I'm supported as long as I'm committed to being a better person than I was yesterday. My peers can depend on me. I'm there being poured into, but some of those students don't know that the faculty and staff are really there for them. So when they don't know that, I'm their resource that explain and show them that they're here to help us.
